JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT is a music review of the great Big Bands during the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. A fun filled event for all ages that captures the exciting sounds of great melodies and lyrics performed by an energetic group of instrumentalists and vocalists who will keep you moving in your seats, tapping your toes and clapping your hands. JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT celebrates America’s Swing Era performing the greatest hits as recorded by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford, Harry James, Artie Shaw, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berigan, Count Basie and more! Vocal selections will include songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Bob Eberly, Helen O’Connell, Rosemary Clooney, and other vocal idols. JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT will perform various styles of music including swing, ballads, cha-cha’s, waltz’s, and tangos, all to keep a dancer dancing. Join JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT as we pay tribute each evening to all veterans, recreating memories for anyone who has ever experienced the fine arrangements of big band music, and creating new exciting memories for anyone who is now enjoying it for the first time. Introduction Welcome to “The Greatest Hits Explained”. My name is Michael Winter and I’m the host and editor of the show. I’m a German American passionate music lover and if you’re one, too, ready to dive deep into the world of music history with me, awesome. No matter where you are on this beautiful planet, no matter what time zone you’re in or what you’re doing right now (maybe you’re in your car, maybe on a train, a plane, in your home or in the gym) – I’m glad you’re here and I’m really looking forward to this journey together. Today, we’re gonna talk about one of the most recognizable popular songs and big band titles ever recorded: “In The Mood” by Glen Miller. And while the center of this episode is the song itself, you’ll hear me explore Glen Miller’s life and a number of interesting details about some of his contemporaries as well. That’s how I usually approach things – by picking a memorable song that made history and then I not only analyze the song but everything around it, too, with a noticeable German accent.

The Collectors Series of 1951 As 1950 Was Closing, RCA Victor
The Collectors Series of 1951 As 1950 was closing, RCA Victor was preparing something special for its reissues. That the preparation began in 1950 is evidenced by the matrix numbers of the first six LP’s in the series, which are consecutive and begin with E0 – the date code for 1950. So it was that in March, 1951, RCA Victor released a set of six boxed sets of previously-released (“oldies”) material. Each of these sets was also available as a long-playing album. During the next six months, the label planned a more comprehensive reissue campaign. RCA was still not fond of releasing long-play records, so the release of the collectors’ series in LP form was somewhat shocking. The singles themselves carried a 27- prefix for 45 RPM records and (where they exist) a 42- prefix for 78’s. He has led a Benny Goodman tribute band on several cruises, and most recently recorded some Fletcher Henderson arrangements made for the Goodman Orchestra, but never recorded by Goodman. He talks about that in the interview. By the time Wilber was 19, he was good enough to share the spotlight with Sidney Bechet on a network radio broadcast with top jazz artists such as James P. It was named after Camden New Jersey which was the manufacturing and distribution center of RCA Victor records. Much of the material released by Camden were reissues of albums released by RCA Victor, usually with a few less songs. Initially the label was used for classical releases but soon started releasing popular, country and comedy albums. Albums released by Camden included ones released by RCA of Canada using the same numbering system. These RCA of Canada albums were only distributed in Canada and were not listed in the Schwann catalogs. It was a bare-bones interview reflecting Harry James’ highly private persona, but this interview goes into more detail. It was conducted by radio personality Fred Hall, re nownedfor his first-hand knowledge o f the Big Band Era and his association with many o f the talents involved. James plays From the time Harry James left Benny Goodman to James being difficult to know. Despite that, Fred’s form his own orchestra he was excoriated by swing interview with Harry James is revealing and we ’re fans for going over to the “other side ” with syrupy fortunate to have James ’ views, liberally expressed romantic recordings. GLENN MILLER 1940 “JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT” AMERICA’S NUMBER ONE BAND Dedicated to the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society June 2020- June 2021 Prepared by: Dennis M. Spragg Glenn Miller Archives Riding the Wave of Popularity Following their breakthough year of 1939, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra were atop the world of popular music and poised to become America’s number one band. Their success at the Glen Isand Casino and Meadowbrook Ballroom catapulted them into the national spotlight. Dozens of coast-to- coast NBC broadcasts, enthusiastic audiences and a tidal wave of positive press resulted in record- breaking RCA Bluebird record sales. A series of top ten and number one tunes positioned Glenn Miller for continued and unprecedented success. The Cigarette That Satisfies Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company prepared to move their weekly Chesterfield radio series over CBS on from the veteran Paul Whiteman to a younger and livelier format. “Pops” himself helped them by recommending Glenn Miller as his replacement. During this era, advertisers controlled radio programming and the tobacco companies were major sponsors of programs featuring popular music, including Camel with Benny Goodman and Xavier Cugat; Raleigh and Kool with Tommy Dorsey, Old Gold with Artie Shaw and Lucky Strike with Kay Kyser. Advertising agency Newell-Emmett recommended that the new Chesterfield series include the Andrews Sisters vocal group to bolster the promotional impact of the switch to Glenn Miller. And so, on December 27, 1939, Whiteman’s announcer Paul Douglas introduced Miller and the Andrews Sisters to the CBS audience with the “Chesterfield Moonlight Serenade.” As part of their plan, CBS agreed to break the half-hour weekly Wednesday nigh series at 8:30 p.m.

Nelson Riddle’s accomplishments are many, perhaps the best-known being his long-time involvement with Frank Sinatra, but he also arranged for a long list of stellar singers, including Nat Cole, Kay Starr, Dean Martin and Linda Ronstadt, as well as writing music for movies and television. According to those who knew him, he was a man who displayed very little outward emotion, tending to keep his feelings to himself, but able to express them abundantly through his music. His home life, both as a youngster and as a married adult, was less than idyllic. He buried himself in work, obviously for a couple of reasons: to stay away from home and as an outlet for his emotions.
