Melanie Wroe To Headline 2012 Winter Regional Meeting, Jan 20-21

By Ronda Perez, Education Coordinator, Region 10

I hope you are as excited as I am about our Winter Regional Weekend coming up January 20-21, 2012. We are delighted to welcome Melanie Wroe to Region 10 as our guest faculty for the weekend. Melanie is a Certified Showmanship Judge and an International Faculty member. She is currently a member of Pacific Northwest Region #13 and Can-Am Region #16 – City of Lakes Chorus and has been in three internationally acclaimed Choruses and three Regional Champion- ship Quartets.

While the January meeting is geared for quartets, there will be something for everyone. If you love to perform for audiences, wouldn’t you like some ideas for improving your performances? Friday night we will have a ―Mock‖ contest where all attending quartets may chose to perform for a panel of Judges and receive score sheets with comments and a level for their performance. While it is preferred that you sing contest music, it is not required. We will ask that you indicate if you are singing ―contest‖ or ―non-contest‖ music so that you can be evaluated accordingly. Comments received can be used by you and your coaches to provide the proper assistance and (Continued on page 8)

(Continued from page 1) tools necessary to improve your future performances. Additionally, any quartets that want to perform Saturday evening, subject to time constraints, just need to let me know so we have an idea of how many songs you can perform.

Saturday evening we will have Region 10’s Annual Young Women In Harmony (YWIH) competition. We hope that you have young singers in your area who would like to participate in this annual event. We look forward to an inspiring evening. See the Great Gulf Coast Region #10 website for more information.

AND NOW SOMETHING NEW---We will be having a DOUBLE Quartet contest Saturday evening! We know that we are a Region full of great singers and sometimes singing in a quartet just doesn’t work out, so here’s your chance to sing with your friends in an ensemble. Get together with 7 other members of your chorus or friends in your area and prepare a couple of songs for evaluation! We ask you to sing 2 songs, preferably barbershop. The winner of the Double Quartet Contest will be selected by Audience Appre- ciation. The prize is 8 reserved seats close to the front for the Show of Champions at Regional Competition in March 2012.

See, now you know that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN A QUARTET TO ATTEND and enjoy this wonderful weekend. All sing- ers will learn from the weekend. You’ll have a chance to sing in a double quartet, sing tags with many different people and learn a great deal about our wonderful art form. We will have classes on how to be a better singer and performer – You don’t want to miss it! Learn how to be a coach or better one – Aren’t we all armchair coaches? Here’s your chance to see if you really can be the 5th set of eyes and ears for your chapter quartets. We all need someone to sing for who will give us good sound POSITIVE feedback.

The detailed schedule will come out before the end of the year, but the schedule basically is Friday night starting at 7 pm and going until 10 pm for the Mock contest. Saturday starts with physical and vocal warm-ups at 9 am. Classes and coaching will go through- out the day, culminating with our YWIH contest starting at 7:30pm, followed by the Double Quartet Contest and performances by our fabulous Region 10 quartets.

So for all you quartets and double quartets out there that want to participate please send an email to Ronda Perez at ron- [email protected] with your quartet name, member names and parts. If you have a preference as to the type of coaching please include this and know that we will try to meet the request. Depending on the numbers we may not be able to give all quartets your first choice. For quartets to be scheduled for coaching, please send me your email BEFORE JANUARY 5! Additionally please let Ronda know if you will be participating in the Mock contest or Double quartet contest by January 5. We will then set up a schedule and hope to have it out to you prior to the regional weekend. Please note that if I don’t receive your email by Jan. 5 indicating your intention to participate, I may not be able to fit you into the coaching schedule. Coaching will be limited to quartets only this year but who knows what the future holds?

Please take the time to register for the January meeting right now. Remember, workshop costs for chorus members are covered by your pre-paid Regional Education Fees. CAL Members who may not have paid your Regional CAL Assessment or CAL Education Fee can take care of that on-line in just one stop. Go to the Region #10 website (www.region10sai.org) and register on line. Then send me an email at [email protected] (no later than January 5th) if you want to sign up for the Mock Quartet Contest, quar- tet coaching and/or the Double Quartet Contest. If you have verbally given me this information I would appreciate you sending me an email also. I don’t want to leave anyone out.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon and seeing you in January. Take care and have a safe Holiday Season.

Directly Speaking

By Sheri Strawther, Region 10 Directors’ Coordinator

Hello all Region Ten Directors,

Hope all of you are enjoying our cooler weather and having many great rehearsals with your choruses. As we gear up for competition in the next few months, I thought you might enjoy a great handout from 2009 Side by Side seminar regarding Elements of an In-Tune performance. This handout was written by Sharon Babb and Dixie Dahlke and part of the sound category discussion. These elements definitely have an effect on all 4 of our judging categories as well as affecting all aspects of your performances. Best wishes to you all as you prepare your choruses to be the very best singers they can be. Also, remember to mark your calendars for the director seminar with Sharon Babb June 1-2, 2012, in Houston. Registration will begin soon.

This article is reprinted from the Side by Side Director's Seminar and Judge Training Handbook from Detroit 2009

Elements Of An In-Tune Performance

 Correct notes and words are sung  Pitch maintains relationship to ―do‖  Part line intervals are accurate  Intervals and resulting chords are ―tuned‖ correctly to encourage ring  Sufficient resonance is used to create good ―vocal alignment‖ encouraging blend and balance, and enhancing accuracy  Vowels are produced within good quality sound and in the same manner by all singers to encourage compatible vowel sounds without distorting individual resonance or pitch  Synchronized delivery enhances unit accuracy, encouraging chord lock  Sufficient listening skills are applied to create a well-resonated, blended ensemble  Sufficient breath energy is applied to maintain a consistent, accurate and energized tone flow  Appropriate register mix is applied by each singer to avoid distinctive quality changes from register to register  The same mental mood/mental energy is applied across each phrase line by all singers  Sufficient air pressure is applied to support ―movement‖ within the phrase line, creating a sense of forward motion and vitality
