  • A Street Named Bi Pendo,How to Write About
A Street Named Bi Pendo By Carey Baraka “Memory is short-lived/And more important instead/That streets are well-laid/Flowing and uncongested.” — Jonathan Kariara, Naming Streets in Nairobi The main road that runs through Kisumu is called Jomo Kenyatta Highway. Named after the country’s first president, the road divides the town in a North-South axis that runs from Patel Flats (where it stops being Kakamega Road) to the State Lodge in Milimani. In fact, one might argue that it is the spine of the city, in the sense of it being the central nervous system and the other roads feeding off it. In other words, cut off this road from either end (at Kondele or at the intersection with Busia Road) and you have killed Kisumu. During the 2017 electoral period, Jomo Kenyatta Highway was the epicentre of several violent clashes between opposition supporters and police officers. A general election had been held on 8 August and the main candidates in the presidential election were the incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party, and Raila Odinga of the NASA coalition. On 9 August, as tallying was ongoing, Odinga announced that the elections database had been hacked and the results were being manipulated in favour of his opponent, and that the hacker had used the credentials of Chris Msando, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ICT manager who had been murdered less than two weeks to the election. Odinga said, “What the IEBC has posted is a complete fraud . to give Uhuru Kenyatta votes that were not cast .

To Doping”, an awareness campaign for organizations to unite behind in their support for doping-free sport, dominated the work of the Commission Against Doping in Sport in 2012. The campaign included all forms of education and awareness building and met with interest of some Polish sport federations, whose support helped us to to reach out to very many young athletes. The last year was very important for yet another reason – the greatest number of doping control tests conducted by the Commission, resulting in the detection of 63 anti-doping rule violations. Some might say that this is not much, but taking into account the statistics of other European countries and the world, the number of detected anti-doping rule violations is great and alarming. The scale of violations is a proof for us that educational campaigns and doping tests must be intensified so that sport can be truly free from doping. The past year was also important for the anti-doping system for another reason. The doping scandal involving Lance Armstrong, the icon of cycling, disclosed all gaps and inefficiencies of the system, which should be repaired as quickly as possible. Doping at “US Postal” team showed how easy it is to cheat the anti-doping system.

  • (Protests in Niger Left 10 People Dead As Rioters Torched Churches
(Protests in Niger left 10 people dead as rioters torched churches, wrecked bars and blocked several major roads during two days of demonstrations against a French magazine cover depicting the Prophet Muhammad. ) BURUNDI : RWANDA : Rwanda: Analysing Rwanda's Presidential Term Limits The New Times (Kigali)/19 January 2015 analysis By Fred Mufulukye The decision on who should lead Rwanda even after 2017 should fall within the parameters of democracy. Democracy is the government of people, for the people and by the people. The choice should, therefore, be left in the hands and wishes of the Rwandan people. It should also be recalled that the Rwandan constitution as revised to date was established and enacted based on the ideas of Rwandans. Based on the principles of democracy, Rwandans have constitutional rights to modify or review their constitution to match it with their current aspirations and wishes. It is in this understanding that article 101 of the Rwanda Constitution can't be seen as stumbling block to the wishes of Rwandans. It states that; "The President of the Republic is elected for a term of seven years renewable only once". It further reads: "Under no circumstances shall a person hold the office of President of Republic for more than two terms". Paragraph 1 of article 193, provides that power to initiate amendment of the Constitution shall be vested concurrently in the President of the Republic upon the proposal of the Cabinet and each Chamber of Parliament upon a resolution passed by a two thirds (2/3) majority vote of its members. However, paragraph 3 of article 193 provides that, the constitutional amendment concerning the term of the President of the Republic, must be passed by referendum, after adoption by each Chamber of Parliament.
