OC Junior Gala Day Draw A very successful Junior Gala Day was held last Saturday with many of our OC members taking the opportunity to have their photo taken with Melbourne Rebels captain and Wallaby player, Dane Haylett-Petty. Photographs courtesy of Corné Arnold Match Report - Under 16’s Gala Day Old Collegians 36 def Onkaparinga 10 The U16s faced a strong Onkaparinga team for their first game in 2019, and it was evident that both teams have been working hard during the pre-season. After a delayed start, the game was very physical with Onkas continuing to attack our line but with the boys maintaining a very strong defence and putting on solid tackles resulted in Onkas only getting over the line twice. The boys displayed a lot passion and energy throughout the game which was great for the coaching team to see, even though the win unfortu- nately came with our first injury for the season (get well soon Callum!!). Special shout out goes to Willem who flew down for our game to ensure we had at least one reserve, Zac who made his return to rugby after last playing in under 10s, and Joeli from Uni who joined our team for the Gala Day. Try scorers were Jayden Hazzard (x2), Willem Pienaar, Ben Wagner, and Zac Boyd with Carl Arnold converting all but one and kicking a penalty goal in the second half - from just on HALF WAY! The result was Old Collegians beating Onka- paringa 36-10. A big thanks to all who came out to support all the teams on Saturday, especially the senior men who stopped by after their practice match in the morning. Match Report - Under 10’s Gala Day Old Collegians V Elizabeth This was our first run out as a young U10 team. The coaching team had a few questions which needed answer as regards to the skill, understanding of the game, and strength of our team. The team came up with the right answer Elizabeth were short 4 players, so our team loaned them the extra players. This was very pleasing that our young players willingly went over to help Elizabeth, making it a full on game for both teams. The game itself was played in good spirit, some good tackling, great ball play, going down in tackles and presenting the ball to an oncoming ruck formation, all of which gave our backs first use of the ball. The backs also moved the ball down the line, running straight to the try line, but sometimes running too wide into touch (still getting used to a 5 metre narrower field). This was all very rewarding for the coaches to see that our young U10’s understood what is required of them, and they came up with the goods. As coaches we still see some areas where the team can and will improve - hey, it’s the first outing of the season - and we’re all looking forward to a great season. Match Report - Under 12’s Gala Day U12’s Brighton 21 v Old Collegians 10 (Game unfortunately stopped due to an injury to a Brighton player, just after the second half start) The Old Collegians U12’s played against Brighton on Saturday 13th April in the pre-season Junior Gala Day at Parkinson Reserve. We would like to welcome the following new families and players in our team, who represented Old Collegians for the first time on Saturday: Andrew Hattingh, Jasper LeMessurier, Kealen Bailey & Nathan Kotzé. It was a lovely day, with a great atmosphere as we kicked off season 2019. Players also had the opportunity to meet Dane Haylett-Petty (Wallaby player and Rebels Captain). We took to the field against a focused Brighton team. They had a sense of urgency about their game and controlled their possession well. They passed the ball around quickly and managed to beat us out wide for their first try, which they successfully converted. We took more control and started to setup some phases of play but unfortunately allowed Brighton to turn over our possession, which resulted in their second try. It was setup through their forwards as they managed to break through our defence line with some straight and direct running. Following another successful conversion they were leading 14 - 0. Our tackling was identified as an area to work on at training. We lifted our game and played some really good rugby as we passed the ball out wide for Jack Bell in the centres to cross the line for our first try. Brighton ran in one more converted try taking the score to 21 - 5. We started to play some more attacking rugby, which setup a beautiful try by Charlie Kinniburgh, unfortunately we weren’t successful with our conversions. The half time and final score was 21 to Brighton v 10 Old Collegians as the game was stopped shortly after the restart, when one of the Brighton forwards was injured. We wish him a speedy recovery. When we played like a team we had some strong forward momentum. There were lots of positives to take out of the game and several areas identified to work on but overall a good effort with our new players having their first game experience and lots of players playing in new positions for the first time. We look forward to see our team grow and develop throughout the season and look forward to see you all at training as we prepare for our game against Onkaparinga on the 27th April. Photograph courtesy of Corné Arnold Match Report - Under 8’s Gala Day Match Report - Under 7’s Gala Day The U7 team had a great start to the season. The mixture of new and more experienced players worked well. It was great to see all players getting the opportunity to enjoy the game and run with the ball. The players had a good understanding of defensive play quickly getting back into flat line and running up quickly to tag the opposition. They were as strong in attack, working hard to get on-side and run forward to gain ground. It was great see players such as Will, Struan and Henry run in support of their team mates as they headed to the try line.
