Book: Shining a Light on the Autism Spectrum: Experiences and Aspirations of Adults By Debra Costley, Susanna Baldwin, Susan Bruck, Kaaren Haas, Kerry Ritzrow; publisher Routledge 22 Sep 2016. This book is a unique collaboration between Aspect researchers and adults on the autism spectrum, and explores their experiences, aspirations and needs, in their own words. It also reveals the key role of families in supporting individuals well into their adult life. The book dispels many of the myths, stereotypes and misinformation, and conveys a realistic portrait of their colourful lives. Completed a survey about the roll out of Australia’s biggest reform, the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The results will be used to put together a score card on the NDIS and let decision makers know what is working and what’s not. It would be great if you could do the survey too. The more people who do it - the more accurate reflection it will be on how things currently stand. It only takes a few minutes and you can do it here: http://www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au/survey

Feedback on Draft Model for Integrated Carer Support Service System The Australian Government is committed to supporting and sustaining the vital work of unpaid carers, and now the Department of Social Services invites carers to share their thoughts and feedback on this model for proposed future service by making a submission or by participating in the carer survey. The draft Service Delivery Model outlines the service types and how those services may be delivered in a future model. The focus of the draft Service Delivery Model is to provide more services to more carers; reach carers earlier in their caring journey by providing supports that build their capacity; reduce strain; enable increased participation in education and the workforce; and improve carer wellbeing. Carers are invited to comment at www.dss.gov.au/disability-and-carers/programmes-services/for-carers/integrated-plan- for-carer-support-services by 5pm 16 December 2016.

Have your Say - New Disability Employment Services (DES) People with disability, employment service providers and employers of people with disability are encouraged to provide feedback on a discussion paper aimed at introducing an improved model of Disability Employment Services (DES) from 2018. Potential options for reforms outlined in the discussion paper aim to increase the number of people with disability finding and keeping a job. Currently only 53% of people with disability are participating in work, compared with 83% of people without disability. The DES helps Australians with disability break down the barriers to participating in the economy and there is an opportunity to improve DES to help more people stay in employment over the long-term. The discussion paper is part of the Australian Government’s broader consultations with the disability community on the strengths and weaknesses of the current approach to disability employment. It aims to better engage with employers and helping more DES participants make the transition to work. Have your say on the DES discussion paper at www.engage.dss.gov.au before 5pm on 16 December 2016.

Sadly this year's report shows little change in the employment participation or discrimination of people with disability in the workplace since the last report in 2012. Results showed that: • It is twice as hard to get a job if you have a disability. • People without disability usually earn more than twice as much as people with disability (average $465/week). • One person in 12 who has a disability say they have been treated badly because of their disability. • If you have a profound or severe disability, it is harder to get a job in 2015 (25% working), compared to in 2012 (29.7%). • If a person with disability does have a job, they are more likely to work part-time, compared to someone without a disability. • Nearly half (46.6%) of the people with disability are not working, and not even looking for a job.

Report: “Carers: Doing it Tough, Doing it Well’” Anglicare Sydney recently released this report which shows the importance of respite and support coordination services in supporting carers' wellbeing. It concluded that, In the new world of the NDIS, carer support is intrinsic to maintaining their capacity to care. Funding for social supports and emergency planning needs to be provided to ensure sustainability of the caring role. Just as importantly, carer involvement in planning and ongoing access to respite are critical if carers are to be adequately supported into the future. Policy recommendations regarding the Integrated Carer Support Service (ICSS) included: 1. That carers have access to and an option to appoint an Independent Carer Support Coordinator 2. That carers have access to and options to take up flexible respite services 3. That the ICSS provide funding for qualified and experienced organisations to run Social Support Programs 4. That the ICSS provide supports for emergency planning, registration of a plan and services requied to implement it. 5. That the ICSS and NDIS Local Area Coordinators be informed and aware of accessible information for carers regarding their involvement in the participant’s planning and their opportunity to provide a Carer’s Statement.
