The hot vegetarian, gluten free lunch for less than £5.00 must be the my best bargain in York. Great choice for others who may not have my difficult diet. Eat in or take away. Try it for yourself soon." Audrey p2 New Earswick Garden Village When New Earswick was built more than one hundred years ago, Joseph Rowntree wanted to make it possible for people to live a good life in a healthy community. Fresh air and home-grown food were important and each house had a garden with two fruit trees, and was the right size “such that a man could cultivate it after finishing a day’s work”. Let’s celebrate our garden village this spring….there are so many ways to get out and about as the days get longer… p3 Gardening and Growing in New Earswick With its special history as a garden village, today New Earswick is still full of fruit trees and greenery and there are lots of ways for everyone to get involved in growing, gardening and nature New Earswick Sharing Together (NEST) NEST is a hidden gem nestled along sleeper path and the river. It’s a place to relax, share your love of gardening or learn more about growing from the volunteers working there. There’s fresh produce available during the growing season, just donate as you feel on the gate. Spring at Sleeper Path Garden - come along and visit one Wednesday morning 10am-12pm – at the end of Station Avenue – cross the river and we’re on your left – you’ll be very welcome! Facebook: New Earswick Community Garden - NEST CAN (Community Action for Nature) It’s approaching our busiest time with seeding, planting, mowing and clearing of invasive plants coming to the forefront. The bluebells will be out in April so walk around our woodland areas to enjoy them at their best. We recently built this planter at the South entrance to the village and filled it with spring and summer bulbs. It was made from pallets we recycled from the New Lodge site. We’ll be adding flowers during the spring and summer to make the welcome to the garden village colourful and bright. Along with more wildflower seeds there should be a lot of happy insects around! Please pop along to Lock Cottage, Haxby Road just over Link Road roundabout on any Tuesday or Saturday 10am-12pm and say hello or even volunteer if you’d like. Twitter: @CANforNature Facebook: Community Action for Nature ‘No Dig’ garden at the Folk Hall The ‘no dig’ approach to gardening is easier on your back and much quicker - and many believe it produces a larger crop. This small garden to the rear of the Folk Hall is set aside for growing all things edible. It’s early days for this new garden and the perfect time to share your ideas about what you’d like to see growing or for you to try gardening for the first time. Come along any Thursday from 1-2pm – everyone is welcome p4 We have so many fruit trees in the village that the spring blossom is a wonderful sight! Come and enjoy our Spring! Fruit tree pruning demo This free demonstration from Abundance York will give you the know-how on keeping your fruit trees in tip top condition so you can enjoy and share a bumper harvest. Thursday 7 March at 2pm at Folk Hall New Earswick in Blossom Walk the garden village and enjoy the trees in blossom. With plums, apples and sweet cherries in the main, you can spend a happy hour identifying the trees and discover where you can harvest fruit during the year. There may be a chance to find other foraging spots too. Thursday 4 April at 2pm Saturday 4 May at 10.30am a leisurely walk starting from the Folk Hall Abundance (York’s urban harvesting group) wants people across York to share in our City’s fantastic free fruit harvest. www.edibleyork.org.uk/abundance Hartrigg Oaks grounds and allotments Hartrigg Oaks residents have been recording wildlife in their grounds. Piles of wood have been left to encourage hedgehogs and sightings have been seen of a fox, voles, ducks, deer, hedgehogs and a growing number of birds. The allotments provide residents with a space for growing and a place to enjoy the outdoors too. “Gardening adds years to your life and life to your years” – Unknown p5 New Earswick Flower Club Is a small and friendly club affiliated to NAFAS and currently has 25 members. Brick production continued until 1933 and subsequently the clay pit gradually filled with water and the area became “wild”. In 1973 a formal agreement with the Local Authority led to the area being established as a Designated Educational Nature Reserve whose object is “to provide a place for the outdoor study of natural history”. The reserve is managed by a voluntary committee. Winter is a hard time of the year for wildlife and at the nature reserve we hope that all the work our volunteers do will help local wildlife will get through to the warmer weather without too much stress. This Winter we have been very pleased to have a pair of Swans on the lake. During the recent very cold period the lake froze over and the Swans had to keep a hole in the ice so they could continue to feed. Open Day: Birds and Bird Ringing Saturday 2 March 10am to 3pm Bird ringing fulfils a very important function. All the information gathered about the birds, sex, weight, age etc. is logged onto an international database. The birds are ringed with a number and can therefore be traced if caught again. This is valuable information for our understanding of bird species, the numbers in their populations and their movements. Come and witness this important work at the Open Day. Dates of future Open Days will be publicised in the Newsletter Please note, for all open days, children younger than 15 must be accompanied by an adult. New Earswick Nature Reserve is enclosed, and entry is via a gate on Alder Way. To obtain a key and become a ‘Key Holder’ is easy and open to all - simply request a ‘Key Holder’ application form from the Committee Secretary, at [email protected] Chris Adams (Committee Secretary) February 2019 p7 Free at the Folk Hall We are now settled in the Folk Hall after leaving the Open Shop last November.
