p2 New Earswick Garden Village

When New Earswick was built more than one hundred years ago, Joseph Rowntree wanted to make it possible for people to live a good life in a healthy community. Fresh air and home-grown food were important and each house had a garden with two fruit trees, and was the right size “such that a man could cultivate it after finishing a day’s work”.

Let’s celebrate our garden village this spring….there are so many ways to get out and about as the days get longer…

p3 Gardening and Growing in New Earswick

With its special history as a garden village, today New Earswick is still full of fruit trees and greenery and there are lots of ways for everyone to get involved in growing, gardening and nature New Earswick Sharing Together (NEST) NEST is a hidden gem nestled along sleeper path and the river. It’s a place to relax, share your love of gardening or learn more about growing from the volunteers working there. There’s fresh produce available during the growing season, just donate as you feel on the gate. Spring at Sleeper Path Garden - come along and visit one Wednesday morning 10am-12pm – at the end of Station Avenue – cross the river and we’re on your left – you’ll be very welcome! Facebook: New Earswick Community Garden - NEST

CAN (Community Action for Nature) It’s approaching our busiest time with seeding, planting, mowing and clearing of invasive plants coming to the forefront. The bluebells will be out in April so walk around our woodland areas to enjoy them at their best. We recently built this planter at the South entrance to the village and filled it with spring and summer bulbs. It was made from pallets we recycled from the New Lodge site. We’ll be adding flowers during the spring and summer to make the welcome to the garden village colourful and bright. Along with more wildflower seeds there should be a lot of happy insects around! Please pop along to Lock Cottage, Road just over Link Road roundabout on any Tuesday or Saturday 10am-12pm and say hello or even volunteer if you’d like. Twitter: @CANforNature Facebook: Community Action for Nature

‘No Dig’ garden at the Folk Hall The ‘no dig’ approach to gardening is easier on your back and much quicker - and many believe it produces a larger crop. This small garden to the rear of the Folk Hall is set aside for growing all things edible. It’s early days for this new garden and the perfect time to share your ideas about what you’d like to see growing or for you to try gardening for the first time. Come along any Thursday from 1-2pm – everyone is welcome

p4 We have so many fruit trees in the village that the spring blossom is a wonderful sight! Come and enjoy our Spring! Fruit tree pruning demo This free demonstration from Abundance York will give you the know-how on keeping your fruit trees in tip top condition so you can enjoy and share a bumper harvest. Thursday 7 March at 2pm at Folk Hall

New Earswick in Blossom Walk the garden village and enjoy the trees in blossom. With plums, apples and sweet cherries in the main, you can spend a happy hour identifying the trees and discover where you can harvest fruit during the year. There may be a chance to find other foraging spots too. Thursday 4 April at 2pm Saturday 4 May at 10.30am a leisurely walk starting from the Folk Hall Abundance (York’s urban harvesting group) wants people across York to share in our City’s fantastic free fruit harvest. www.edibleyork.org.uk/abundance

Hartrigg Oaks grounds and allotments Hartrigg Oaks residents have been recording wildlife in their grounds. Piles of wood have been left to encourage hedgehogs and sightings have been seen of a fox, voles, ducks, deer, hedgehogs and a growing number of birds. The allotments provide residents with a space for growing and a place to enjoy the outdoors too. “Gardening adds years to your life and life to your years” – Unknown

New Earswick Nature Reserve is on the site of the clay pit and former brick works which was established in 1902 to supply bricks and roof tiles for the growing village of New Earswick. Brick production continued until 1933 and subsequently the clay pit gradually filled with water and the area became “wild”. In 1973 a formal agreement with the Local Authority led to the area being established as a Designated Educational Nature Reserve whose object is “to provide a place for the outdoor study of natural history”. The reserve is managed by a voluntary committee. Winter is a hard time of the year for wildlife and at the nature reserve we hope that all the work our volunteers do will help local wildlife will get through to the warmer weather without too much stress. This Winter we have been very pleased to have a pair of Swans on the lake. During the recent very cold period the lake froze over and the Swans had to keep a hole in the ice so they could continue to feed.

Open Day: Birds and Bird Ringing Saturday 2 March 10am to 3pm Bird ringing fulfils a very important function. All the information gathered about the birds, sex, weight, age etc. is logged onto an international database. The birds are ringed with a number and can therefore be traced if caught again. This is valuable information for our understanding of bird species, the numbers in their populations and their movements. Come and witness this important work at the Open Day. Dates of future Open Days will be publicised in the Newsletter Please note, for all open days, children younger than 15 must be accompanied by an adult. New Earswick Nature Reserve is enclosed, and entry is via a gate on Alder Way. To obtain a key and become a ‘Key Holder’ is easy and open to all - simply request a ‘Key Holder’ application form from the Committee Secretary, at [email protected] Chris Adams (Committee Secretary) February 2019

p10 Join Dee on her journey of frugality

Becoming Devilishly Frugal! We all live in this fast-paced society where everything is rising except our budgets. Currently the annual food cost for one person with no luxuries is £1,370. So imagine you have a family of four that is a whooping £5,480 a year or £105 a week. The national living wage for over 25 year olds is £7.83 and universal credit reduces your payment by 63p from every £1 you earn. It isn’t surprising that food banks are stretched and people struggling to find the time to cook with busy working lifestyles to try and make ends meet. It’s easy to see how people are struggling to get by in this tough financial time. We all find ourselves scouring the internet for money saving ideas and trailing the supermarkets searching for a bargain. I have been in this situation and have known the constant battle we face to survive in this complex financial world. Allow me to explain how I got here and why I created my blog. In 2017, after having lost my leg to a rare form of cancer my husband had to leave his job to care for our two children whilst I spent several weeks in the hospital in Birmingham. The daily commute took 6 hours meaning fuel cost up to £30-£40 a time. With little to no money coming in and three mouths to feed my husband had to rely on the local food banks. He struggled with what the food banks gave him as unlike myself he is not very experienced in the kitchen. Without the generosity of family and friends, cooking meals and bringing them around it would have been very difficult for my family to eat a balanced diet. Once I got out of hospital I took over the cooking again using the donations from the food banks. I got very creative! The food you get can prove tricky to produce balanced meals but with a bit of know-how it is possible. This experience inspired me to write this blog to help other families similar to mine. I’m going to be bringing to you lots of exciting recipes that you can make at a really low cost, helpful tips and advice on managing on a budget, to help you get the best of the food you can afford. My blog launches on 1st March at www.devilishlyfrugal.com I really hope you will follow me on this journey of frugality and you yourself becoming devilishly frugal!

p13 p14 Local History Group

A Local History Group for New Earswick and other Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust communities

We meet monthly at the Folk Hall and everyone is welcome. We have a programme of outside speakers to talk about the village, and there will be an opportunity to explore the subjects closest to people’s hearts - whether it’s old photographs of the schools or swimming pool, or discovering how people lived in previous times. Friday 15 March 12.30-2.30pm Friday 12 April 12.30-2.30pm The year got off to a great start at January’s meeting, with a slide show of previously unseen images of the gardens of the Garden Village by Brian Jardine. At the February meeting Dick Hunter from the Clements Hall Local History Group came to tell us about some of the things they’ve been doing since they set up in 2013 in the Scarcroft side of York. On 15th March Louise Cantley from Abundance York is talking about her work on listing all the trees in the village - and her interest in cherry trees in particular. On 12th April we’ll be planning for our summer outing to Scarborough to visit the places with a Rowntree connection and uncover new stories about Rowntree’s rich history in . Just remember, all you need is curiosity about the place where you live and a keenness to share your memories and meet up with others with similar passions! p15 New Earswick Parish Council

Meetings of the Parish Council take place on the third Monday of each month. The next meetings are scheduled for 18 March and 15 April commencing at 7.00 pm at the Folk Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Points of general interest from recent meetings: • The Chairman continues to attend meetings of the New Lodge liaison group and attendees have raised matters that are of wider scope including traffic and highway problems. These have been passed on to the relevant authorities for attention. • Friends of New Earswick Swimming Pool - Members have welcomed the decision to allow the pool to remain open through a newly established Board of Trustees. Cllr Sue Glenton will represent the Parish Council and the wider community on the Board. • Each month there is a Community Walkabout in the Parish taking in different areas of New Earswick. Any problems that are highlighted are passed onto the relevant organisation for attention. At the January walkabout the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Keith Orrell joined the group. • Complaints have been raised by residents in connection with overgrown hedges that are causing problems for pedestrians (especially wheelchairs users and those with prams). The residents concerned will be contacted to ask them to cut back hedges promptly. • Notification has been received that the next stage of the Local Plan will commence in the Spring. This means that the Inspectors will look at all the representations that have been made during the consultation period. Members of the Parish Council objected to the proposal to develop the area known as the Old School Field for housing. They consider this should be left open for recreational use. • The annual precept for the Parish was agreed at the January meeting and this will be £25,500.00 for the year 2019-20. • There are green grit bins situated outside both schools, the shops and at Chestnut Grove. These are checked regularly, but if you think they need re-filling please let us know. • There is a vacancy for one Parish Councillor. This will be for the period until 2 May when the local elections will take place. If you are interested, please contact the Clerk for further information. New section Film @ Folk Hall

“I won’t be a rock star, I’ll be a legend!” (Freddie Mercury)

And a legend he was. We are proud to be bringing you Bohemian Rhapsody as our March movie! It’s still out in cinemas across the country but as it’s been such a hit we wanted to bring it to our community to enjoy it with you, our wonderful audience! It charts 15 years in the life of lead singer, Freddie Mercury between joining the band and their legendary 1985 Live Aid performance. Starring Remi Malek the film is still receiving worldwide acclaim and won Best Picture at the Golden Globes along with a raft of other award nominations. It’s our first musical biopic and if it goes down well, it won’t be our last. Join us on Friday 29 March from 7pm for drinks and music with the film starting at 7.30pm.

Then in April we bring you Lion. A biographical drama based on the non-fiction book, ‘A Long Way Home’ starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman. It follows the quest of a boy who lost his family 25 years earlier, now determined to find his way back home. It narrowly missed out on an Oscar with 6 nominations but deservedly picked up two BAFTAS. We think it will be an inspiring and moving evening and we hope you can make it along, bar from 7pm and film at 7.30pm on Friday 26 April.

We’d just like to say a quick thank you to everyone who has supported us by coming to an event, telling a friend or getting involved with our social media lately. We welcomed over 1000 visitors in 2018 which is a great milestone for us. With the help of funding from local groups our new set up now gives our audience a full cinema experience but without the price tag, right in the heart of our neighbourhood! If you haven’t tried us out yet then we’d love to see you soon.

Keep up to date with us by visiting www.filmfolkhall.com or add us on www.facebook.com/filmfolkhall. See you next time!

p18 p19 New Earswick Residents Forum

At our December meeting we allocated money to four areas, we helped the Sports Club with their improvements for the disabled toilets, helped Friends of the School towards the Christmas Fair, granted the Open Shop gardening project which has transferred to the Folk Hall and we contributed to the We are Theatre group at the Folk Hall. When we met in January we re-visited our support to We are Theatre and gave them a further grant for them to continue what is a hugely successful project for New Earswick youngsters and not so young in the light of their increased costs. We looked at ways of communicating with residents and considered a Facebook page which we can set up and more use of the notice boards in New Earswick, we were disappointed at the Jan/Feb distribution of the newsletter as some residents did not receive a copy, they are in the Folk Hall. We are still looking for a secretary to help with taking notes, providing minutes and agendas with help from the Chairman. and if anyone thinks this is for them then please contact me through the Folk Hall reception or turn up at one of our meetings,7pm on the first Tuesday in the month. We considered what residents would like to see happen in the community and how they felt our community improvement budget could be spent, at present we agree to involve residents with a summer trip and a visit to the panto, we provide skips at strategic points over the year, we support the Primary School to help children get that little bit more and we pay for the maintenance contract for the CCTV within the area, alongside helping clubs and societies with grants to help their improvements and we cover any public liability insurance for the groups that require it. If you think that we should not be doing any of these or have suggestions on any other way we could help in the community then please let us know via the Folk Hall reception in letter or e-mail [email protected] At the February meeting we discussed the replacement of an alternative funding for the community as a whole instead of the Mobility Scheme and further thought needs to go into it with residents views on what items should be included, we would love to hear your views. We also learned that no vehicular access was to be pursued at the front of the Folk Hall which was good news for our efforts to establish talks regarding a pedestrian crossing when building works cease. It was learned that a meeting had been set up to look at the future of Trust News and its distribution in regard to advanced technology with the Chairman in attendance and he was enthusiastic about the outcome. It would mean that in the future any resident would be able to access through e-mail, be able to pick up a copy at strategic places or given a choice for home delivery, hopefully the home delivery would be a small fraction of the current delivery and to make it more manageable by local personnel. If this proved successful we could then perhaps look at duplicating the system for the New Earswick Newsletter. 11 March – 22 March the Folk Hall is proudly hosting a beautiful photography exhibition celebrating the people and place “assets” in 3 of York’s communities in a collaboration between CYC and the University of York.

Individuals and groups working alongside the Local Area Coordinators in Tang Hall, Westfield and Huntington & New Earswick were photographed in and out of community venues in these areas. The photos are to complement research conducted by the University of York into the inception and development of this asset based approach to social care.

The exhibition is upstairs in the Folk Hall so pop up to have a look.

York Coronary Support Group Trust, a registered charity, was formed in 1988 to provide what is considered to be vital help and support needed by cardiac patients and their families following the patient’s illness and release from hospital. We hope to enable people to return to as normal a life as possible. The Group forms an essential part of the rehabilitation programme which starts in the Coronary Care Unit of York District Hospital. We run exercise classes and more. If you want to meet other people with ‘heart concerns’ and their families, please come and join York Coronary Support Group, share experiences, glean advice, participate in social events, make new friends and have fun. The group meets at the Folk Hall on the first Monday of the month at 7.30pm and all are very welcome. To find out more please see our website: www.ycsgt.org.uk
