The featured films represent classics by internationally known Italian directors as well as more recent productions. Admission is free and open to the public. Dr. Rosetta D’Angelo, professor of Italian studies, will coordinate the series. All of the films will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in the H-Wing Auditorium located in the H-Wing academic building. A discussion follows each screening. The schedule is as follows: January 23: The Bicycle Thief, 1948, directed by Vittorio De Sica Perhaps the single most important and moving film of Italian neo-realism, The Bicycle Thief tells the deceptively simple story of an unemployed man finding work to paste up signs, work requiring a bicycle, which is then stolen. February 6: La Strada, 1954, directed by Federico Fellini One of Fellini’s most poetic and powerful films, it features extraordinary performances by Giulietta Masina and Anthony Quinn. A naïve waif is sold to a traveling-show strong man. February 20: Seduced and Abandoned, 1963, directed by Pietro Germi One of the funniest Italian films, this comedy is about the oblique machinations of the Sicilian “code of honor.” A madcap chain of events, seductions and revelations mock the hypocrisy of social conventions. Email: [email protected] 1 THE RISE OF THE SOUND DESIGNER: Northern California Film Sound In The 1960s And 1970s Northern California based filmmakers in the late 1960s and 1970s pushed the traditional boundaries of filmmaking practices in ways that have been adopted and reworked into contemporary Hollywood filmmaking practices. The article examines labour issues and conditions and politics of film sound work during this era, some of which continue to be applicable today. The development of new production practices pushed filmmakers including George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Walter Murch to produce films outside the traditional Hollywood studio production paradigm. This new generation of filmmakers held sound with a higher status and popularized non- traditional ways of working with sound. They created the new job title of sound designer to signify a person who supervises and collaborates with the director, department heads, and screenwriter on the use and function of sound through all of the filmmaking phases from the writing stage through the final mix.

    COMUNICATO STAMPA Il Museo Nazionale del Cinema presenta al Cinema Massimo Paesaggi dell’anima Retrospettiva Valerio Zurlini Da venerdì 15 a venerdì 22 giugno 2012 Cinema Massimo - via Verdi, 18, Torino In occasione del trentennale della morte di Valerio Zurlini, il Museo Nazionale del Cinema rende omaggio, da venerdì 15 a venerdì 22 giugno , al regista bolognese – sensibile e attento indagatore dei moti dell’anima – con un’ampia retrospettiva dal titolo Paesaggi dell’anima. Retrospettiva Valerio Zurlini. La retrospettiva è un progetto del Museo Nazionale del Cinema organizzato con la collaborazione di Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale , Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna e Cinecittà Luce . Autore controverso e difficilmente inquadrabile, Valerio Zurlini non ha mai goduto – né in vita né dopo la morte prematura – della considerazione critica che avrebbe meritato. Eppure ha saputo analizzare come pochi altri registi italiani i sentimenti umani, le passioni violente che ci condizionano e ci distruggono, il rapporto tra l’individuo e la Storia, le corrispondenze tra la psicologia dei personaggi e il paesaggio in cui vivono. Jean Gili – uno dei critici che si è maggiormente occupato di analizzare la poetica del regista emiliano – ha dichiarato che “ con Antonioni, Zurlini è il grande cineasta dei paesaggi degli stati d’animo” e che “appartiene a una sorta di generazione perduta, solitaria e distante di fronte a un mondo senza qualità, lacerato dalle contraddizioni che lo spingono in un unico movimento verso l’esaltazione romantica e verso la volontà d’autodistruzione”. La retrospettiva sarà inaugurata venerdì 15 giugno , alle ore 16.15 , nella Sala Tre del Cinema Massimo, con la proiezione del film Le ragazze di San Frediano , film del 1954 e debutto di Zurlini nel lungometraggio ispirato all’omonimo romanzo di Vasco Pratolini.
