The next one is on January 4, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and we’ll continue on February 15. The Book of the Law is the central sacred text of Thelema, received by Aleister Crowley in Cairo, Egypt in the year 1904. It contains three chapters, each of which was written down in one hour, beginning at noon, on April 8, April 9, and April 10. The teachings within this book are expressed as the Law of Thelema, usually encapsulated by these two phrases: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” (AL I:40) and “Love is the law, love under will” (AL I:57) Its full title is Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX, The Book of the Law, as delivered by XCIII=418 to DCLXVI. The Gnostic Mass is the central public ritual of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica (E.G.C.) under the auspices of the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) as set forth in Liber XV, composed by Crowley in 1913. Maine celebrated its first Gnostic Mass at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Westbrook Maine on October 19, 2003, hosted by The Knights Templar Oasis of Massachusetts. The Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans, Inc. (CUUPS) was responsible for facilitating this effort. CUUPS is an Independent Affiliate of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA). At that time an official body of the OTO did not exist in Maine but was the mere brainchild of Frater Eparisteros. Abrahadabra Encampment was recognized and chartered as an official body of the Ordo Templi Orientis in October 2005, and we started celebrating the Gnostic Mass as a regular activity of our Camp. I was appointed Gnostic Mass Coordinator, and we put together a Mass Team and set the goal to perform one Gnostic Mass every other month. Abrahadabra was recognized and chartered as an Oasis of the Ordo Templi Orientis in October 2006. We now perform two Gnostic Masses a month. If a Child learned well, they became a Maiden and left the cottage, with a light of their own to build and light a cottage of their own. At intervals, a Great Wild Beast would be born and roar for a time. Each Great Wild Beast, nearing the time of His passing, would teach a Maiden how to roar like them and instruct them to pass the roar on until they heard another Great Wild Beast. One day, the Great Wild Beast died and his roar was not heard in the Kingdom for many a year.

The methodological framework of the article, on the one hand, is the theory of the occulture (C. Partridge), and on the other, the narrative theory proposed in U. Eco’s semiotic model. C. Partridge successfully described modern religious popular culture as a coexistence of abstract Eastern good (the idea of the transcendent Absolute, self-spirituality) and Western personified evil. The ideal confirmation of this thesis is Supernatural, since it was the bricolage game with images of Christian evil that became the cornerstone of its popularity. In the 15 seasons of its existence, Supernatural, conceived as a story of two evil-hunting brothers wrapped in a collection of urban legends, has turned into a global panorama of world demonology while touching on the nature of evil, the world order, theodicy, the image of God, etc. In fact, this show creates a new demonology, angelology, and eschatology. The article states that the narrative topics of Supernatural are based on two themes, i.e., the theology of the spiritual war of the third wave of charismatic Protestantism and the occult outlooks derived from Emmanuel Swedenborg’s system. The main topic of this article is the role of monotheistic mythology in Supernatural.

    Babalon Rising: JaCk parsons’ WitChCraFt propheCy Erik Davis In the forty yearS or so following the death of John Whiteside Parsons in 1952, his name—Jack Parsons from here on out—circulated principally among magic folk, critics of Scientology, and historians of modern rock- etry. In the new century, however, the tale of the SoCal rocket scientist- cum-sex magician has proven a hot commodity, told and retold in a series of articles, biographies, graphic novels, movie scripts, and reality tv shows that have transformed Parsons into one of the most storied figures in the history of American occulture. The superficial reasons are easy to see: with its charismatic blend of sex, sorcery, technology and death, Parsons’ story haunts a dark crossroads of the Southern California mindscape, scrawling a prophetic glyph in the wet pavement of postwar America. Indeed, his tale is so outrageous that if it did not exist, it would need—as they say—to be invented. But if it were invented—that is, if his life were presented as the fiction it in so many ways resembles—it would be hard to believe, even as a fiction. The narrative would seem overly contrived, at once too pulp and too poetic, too rich with allegorical synchronicity to stage the necessary suspension of disbelief. In this essay, I want to explore an unremarked aspect of Jack Parsons’ life and thought, what I will call his magickal feminism. In his 1946 text Free- 165 166 Erik Davis dom is a Two-Edged Sword, Parsons issued a call for women to take up the spiritual, sexual, and political sword—a cry for female autonomy that also eerily anticipated the militant witchcraft that would find historical expres- sion in California over twenty years later.

Before I come before Thelemites with so apparently inflammatory a doctrine as that of Thelemic trinitarianism, I will first briefly examine the trinitarian aspects of the founding Document of Thelema, Liber L vel Legis, The Book of the Law; and then, armed with an arsenal of explanation, I should be better equipped to fend off the precocious and presumptuous haters who would attack what they fail to understand. Crowley advised us that, before engaging in any discussion at all, we should first clarify our terms. So I shall make every effort to be very thorough in this regard. First, we may observe that The Book of the Law consists of three chapters. Why is this? The three chapters purport to be from three separate entities; but are they really entities, and are they really separate? This is an extremely complicated matter, one worthy (in fact) of its own book. But we will have to be a little more economical with our words here. We must strive to be competent expositors of this most difficult doctrine which is, when properly understood, neither archaic nor even theistic. Thelema, as expounded through Liber L, is not a religious step backwards. It is therein presented as a set of doctrines and an ideology solidly anchored in the concept of spiritual evolution and the processes of initiation which serve the mystical and magical advancement of the consciousness of man. It teaches of the change of Aeons, which reflects the spiritual advancement of humanity through mental growth over time, with changing spiritual formulae to suit the evolving mind.

More D often than not, despite all protestations to the contrary, there certainly is. So it is with me. In having been asked to write an introduction to this new edition of The Tree of Life, I feel a warm inner glow which combines a number of quite separate emotions. This book has special meaning for me that none of my other writing ever had. Primarily, there is the basic fact that it was the first book that emerged from my burgeoning spirit. A Garden of Pomegranates, a prior publication, simply expanded itself from a set of Qabalistic notes I had kept for several years-and that is all it ever was.
