[email protected] RESUMEN La ictiofauna nativa de los sistemas límnicos de Chile se compone de 11 familias, 17 géneros y alrededor de 44 especies, incluyendo dos lampreas. De éstas, 81% son endémicas de la provincia biogeográfica chilena y 40% se encuentran clasificadas en peligro de extinción. Los grupos más representados corresponden a los órdenes Siluriformes (11 especies), Osmeriformes (9 especies) y Atheriniformes (7 especies). También están representados en Chile los ciclóstomos Petromyzontiformes (2 especies), y los teleósteos Characiformes (4 especies), Cyprinodontiformes (6 especies), Perciformes (4 especies) y Mugilifromes (1). Latitudinalmente, la mayor riqueza de especies ocurre en la zona centro-sur de la provincia Chilena, en tanto que los extremos norte y sur son de baja riqueza específica. Dado su origen, porcentaje de endemismo y retención de caracteres primitivos, este conjunto ictiofaunístico es de alto valor biogeográfico y de conservación. Existen sin embargo importantes vacíos de conocimiento sobre su sistemática, distribución y biología. PALABRAS CLAVES: Peces, sistemas dulceacuícolas, Chile. E-mail: [email protected] RESUMEN Basado en muestreos de tres años consecutivos y revisión de literatura, describimos la composición, singularidad y estado de conservación de la ictiofauna del río San Pedro, en la cuenca del río Valdivia. Además, analizamos los posibles orígenes de esta ictiofauna, postulando que parte de la cuenca del río Valdivia ha funcionado como un sumidero, principalmente su parte alta, con aportes de fuentes tanto costero-Pacífi cas como del Este de Los Andes. Concluimos que el río San Pedro es de particular valor ictiofaunístico por su alta riqueza específi ca, endemismos y características biogeográfi cas. ABSTRACT Based on three consecutive years of sampling and bibliographic revision, the composition, singularity and conservation status of the San Pedro River ichthyofauna is described. In addition, the potential origin of this Valdivia River ichthyofauna was analyzed and this basin is proposed to have worked like a sink, mainly the higher zone, having been colonized both from Coastal-Pacifi c as from Eastern Andes sources. It is concluded that this river has a particular conservation value due to its high species richness, endemism and biogeographic characteristics. -

This study comprises a critical review of relevant literature on the fish fauna, genocentres, means of dispersal, barriers, ecological groups, coactions, and ecological causality of distribution, including an analysis of allotopic species in the lame lake or pond, the application of indexes of diversity of severa¡ biotopes and comments on historical factors. Its wide scope allows to clarify several aspects of South American Ichthyogeography. The location of Argentina ichthyological fauna according to the above mentioned distributional scheme as well as its relation with the most important hydrography systems are also provided, followed by additional information on its distribution in the Argentine Republic, including an analysis through the application of Simpson's similitude test in several localities. In order to better understand the response of 21 continental ecosystems to paleoclimate changes in southern South America, we investigated 22 the sedimentary record of Puyehue Lake, located in the western piedmont of the Andes in 23 south-central Chile (40°S). We analyzed the elemental (C, N) and stable isotopic (δ13C, δ15N) 24 composition of the sedimentary organic matter preserved in the lake and its watershed to 25 estimate the relative changes in the sources of sedimentary organic carbon through space and 26 time. -

In this study, we present a GIS analysis of two years of field data on animal and plant diversity distributions in evergreen, coastal rain forests of southern Chile (39°30¢–41°25¢ S). Despite their high endemism, these forests have remained largely unprotected. Field records were complemented with data from museum collections and scientific literature. We used selected environmental vari- ables (evapotranspiration, altitude) and, in some cases, forest types as predictors of species distributions. Our study focused on the distribution of forest bryophytes, vascular plants, soil invertebrates, amphibians and birds. In this context, Chilean fishes provide an ideal case to evaluate this relationship due to their short size (fishes between 5 cm and 40 cm) and conservation status, providing evidence for species at the lower end of the worldwide fish size distribution and representing a relevant management tool for species conservation. We assessed the effect of body size on the performance of SDM in nine Chilean river fishes, considering the number of records, performance metrics, and predictor importance. The study was developed in the Bueno and Valdivia basins of southern Chile. -

Jerep1 and Luiz R. Malabarba2 The cheirodontine genus Macropsobrycon is redefined and considered monotypic. The type species, M. uruguayanae, is redescribed based on samples from the entire known geographical distribution of the species. Sexually dimorphic characters of M. uruguayanae are further described and the relationships of the species with the remaining Compsurini are discussed. O gênero Macropsobrycon de Cheirodontinae é redefinido e considerado monotípico. A espécie-tipo, M. uruguayanae, é redescrita com base em amostras de toda a distribuição geográfica conhecida da espécie. Caracteres de dimorfismo sexual secundário de M. uruguayanae são descritos e as relações da espécie com outros Compsurini são discutidas. Palacios Institute de Zoologia "Dr. Ernst Kilian", Universidad Austral de Chile, Casilla 567, Valdivia, Chile Abstract. —Two new species of the genus Aegla Leach from southern Chile are described. Aegla cholchol, new species, a medium to large sized spinulated aeglid, has the River Chol-Chol (Cautin Province) as its type locality. It is probably more related to A. rostrata, from subandean lakes at the Tolten and Valdivia River basins than to A. bahamondei, from the Tucapel River Basin on the western slope of the Nahuelbuta Coastal Cordillera. The other, A. hueicol- lensis, new species, a small to medium sized non- spinulated aeglid, has the River Pichihueicolla (Valdivia Province), on the western slope of the Pelada Coastal Cordillera, as its type-locaUty. A. hueicollensis is similar to A. abtao with which it shares more morphological attributes than with other non-spi- nulated aeglids of the same geographic region (i.e., A. alacalufi, A. manni, and A. concepcionensis).
