Sains Malaysiana 46(1)(2017): 123–128 http://dx.doi.org/10.17576/jsm-2017-4601-16 Production of Biomass by Schizophyllum commune and Its Antifungal Activity towards Rubberwood-Degrading Fungi (Penghasilan Biojisim oleh Schizophyllum commune dan Aktiviti Antikulat ke atas Kulat Pereput Kayu Getah) YI PENG, TEOH*, MASHITAH MAT DON & SALMIAH UJANG ABSTRACT Rubberwood is the most popular timber for furniture manufacturing industry in Malaysia. Major drawback concerned that rubberwood is very prone to attack by fungi and wood borers, and the preservation method using boron compounds exhibited hazardous effect to the workers. Fungal-based biological control agents have gained wide acceptance and Schizophyllum commune secondary metabolite played an important role in term of antifungal agent productivity. The effects of initial pH, incubation temperature and agitation on biomass production by S. commune were investigated under submerged shake culture. In this work, it was found that the synthetic medium with initial solution pH of 6.5 and incubated at 30ºC with shaking at 150 rpm provided the highest biomass production. The biomass extract from S. commune was then applied onto the rubberwood block panel to investigate its effectiveness. The results showed that biomass extract at a concentration of 5 µg/µL could inhibit the growth of selected rubberwood-degrading fungi, such as Lentinus sp., L. strigosus and Pycnoporus sanguineus. A systematic analysis of the Melastomataceae, a pantropical family of about 4200- 4500 species in c. 166 genera, and their traditional allies, the Memecylaceae, with c. 430 species in six genera, suggests a phylogeny in which there are two major lineages in the Melastomataceae and a clearly distinct Memecylaceae. Melastomataceae have close affinities with Crypteroniaceae and Lythraceae, while Memecylaceae seem closer to Myrtaceae, all of which were considered as possible outgroups, but sister group relationships in this plexus could not be resolved. Based on an analysis of all morph- ological and anatomical characters useful for higher level grouping in the Melastoma- taceae and Memecylaceae a cladistic analysis of the evolutionary relationships of the tribes of the Melastomataceae was performed, employing part of the ingroup as outgroup. Using 7 of the 21 characters scored for all genera, the maximum parsimony program PAUP in an exhaustive search found four 8-step trees with a consistency index of 0.86. Because of the limited number of characters used and the uncertain monophyly of some of the tribes, however, all presented phylogenetic hypotheses are weak. A synapomorphy of the Memecylaceae is the presence of a dorsal terpenoid-producing connective gland, a synapomorphy of the Melastomataceae is the perfectly acrodro- mous leaf venation. Within the Melastomataceae, a basal monophyletic group consists of the Kibessioideae (Prernandra) characterized by fiber tracheids, radially and axially included phloem, and median-parietal placentation (placentas along the mid-veins of the locule walls). -

The effects of forest management practices on a plantation of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus) over Agaricomycetes basidiomes biodiversity were studied for one year in an island located in Paraná Delta, Argentina. Dry weight and number of basidiomes were measured. We found 28 species belonging to Agaricomycetes: 26 species of Agaricales, one species of Polyporales and one species of Russulales. -

Presented here is an update to the listing which includes literature published since 2009 and also includes older references that we previously had not uncovered. The authors’ primary research interests center around gilled mushrooms and boletes so perhaps the list that follows is most complete for the fungi of these groups. We have, however, attempted to locate references for all fleshy basidio- mycetous fungi. -

Foster, [email protected] Abstract: Fungi are often inconspicuous in nature and this means it is all too easy to overlook their importance. Often referred to as the “Forgotten Kingdom”, fungi are key components of life on this planet. The phylum Basidiomycota, considered to contain the most complex and evolutionarily advanced members of this Kingdom, includes some of the most iconic fungal species such as the gilled mushrooms, puffballs and bracket fungi. Basidiomycetes inhabit a wide range of ecological niches, carrying out vital ecosystem roles, particularly in carbon cycling and as symbiotic partners with a range of other organisms. Specifically in the context of human use, the basidiomycetes are a highly valuable food source and are increasingly medicinally important. In this review, seven main categories, or ‘roles’, for basidiomycetes have been suggested by the authors: as model species, edible species, toxic species, medicinal basidiomycetes, symbionts, decomposers and pathogens, and two species have been chosen as representatives of each category.
