Twice before, from 1963 to 1970 and from 1986 to 1992, México City has been the scene of exciting World Championship races. We enjoy a proud heritage in the sport: from the early brilliance of the Rodríguez brothers, the sterling efforts of Moisés Solana and Héctor Rebaque to the modern achievements of Esteban Gutíerrez and Sergio Pérez, Mexican drivers have carved their own names in the history of the sport. A few of you may have been here before. You will find many things the same – yet different. The race will still take place in the parkland of Magdalena Mixhuca where great names of the past wrote their own page in Mexican history, but the lay-out of the 21st-century track is brand-new.

The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June / July 2014, Issue #2 Farewell Sir Jack 1926 - 2014 Along with the motorsport fraternity worldwide I was extremely saddened to th hear of Sir Jack’s recent passing on the 19 May. The McLaren family and Jack have shared a wonderful life-long friendship, starting with watching his early racing days in New Zealand, then Pop McLaren purchasing the Bobtail Cooper from Jack after the NZ summer racing season of 1957. For the following season of 1958, Jack made the McLaren Service Station in Remuera his base and brought the second Cooper with him from the UK for Bruce to drive in the NZIGP which culminated in Bruce being awarded the Celebrating 50 Years of “Driver to Europe”. Jack became his mentor and close friend and by 1959 McLaren Racing Bruce joined him as teammate for the Cooper Racing Team. The rest, as we say, is history but the friendship lived on and the BM Trust Following on from their Tasman Series was delighted to host Jack in New Zealand for a week of motorsport memories success, the fledgling BMMR Team set about in 2003 with Jack requesting that the priority of the trip was to be a visit to their very first sports car race with the Zerex see his “NZ Mum” Ruth McLaren, who, by then, was a sprightly 97 years old. th Special – on April 11 1964 at Oulton Park and I shared a very special hour with the two of them together and the love and this was a DNF/oil pressure.

  • 1962 Lotus 24 BRM Chassis No. 946
! 1962 Lotus 24 BRM Chassis No. 946 • Immaculately presented following an exquisite restoration by marque expert Peter Denty Racing. Limited mileage has been accumulated since, with notable outings in the Glover Trophy at the last three editions of the Goodwood Revival. • Following a convincing Pole position at Brands Hatch this year with the HGPCA, this 1,500cc BRM V8 powered Lotus 24 led away from the start in the recent Glover Trophy race and featured strongly before finishing 3rd against stiff competition. • With 2015 FIA HTPs, this Lotus 24 will make an excellent entry to one of the most emotive grids in historic motorsport, racing on some of the best circuits across Europe. By 1962, Lotus had made a strong name for themselves in the world of Formula 1, and were becoming a force to be reckoned with. This came about with Colin Chapman’s Lotus 18 of 1960, which marked a change in formula car design. The low and sleek 18 was the first Lotus to feature a mid mounted engine instead of the traditional front mounted layout as in the Lotus 16 which went before, and subsequently gains were found in chassis design, weight and stiffness. Initially the new Lotus 18 ran with a 2,497cc Coventry Climax FPF four cylinder engine and the so called ‘Lotus Queerbox’ magnesium cased sequential transaxle which further contributed to the weight advantage that the Lotus 18 held. Success was yielded in its debut season with two World Championship victories for Rob Walker Racing and Stirling Moss. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E.

  • WGI NASCAR-F1 History FINAL
THE HISTORY OF FORMULA 1 AND NASCAR AT WATKINS GLEN INTERNATIONAL Cameron Argetsinger’s dream of bringing European style competition to the village of Watkins Glen, NY became a reality on October 2, 1948 in the form of a racecourse running around, and through, the town of Watkins Glen. In 1956, a permanent 2.3-mile circuit designed by Bill Milliken and his associates was completed and, two years later, Watkins Glen would host its first international competition with the running of a Formula Libra race. On August 28, 1961, Watkins Glen was awarded its first Formula 1 event with the green flag scheduled to fall on the United States Grand Prix just 39 days later. After intense preparations, Innes Ireland of Team Lotus took the checkered flag ahead of a field that featured legendary names like Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Dan Gurney, Bruce McLaren and Roger Penske. With the stop in upstate New York now a fixture, champions Hill and Clark dominate the annual event, each winning three races during a six year stretch ending with Clarks third win in 1967. The 1970s brought much change for The Glen with the undertaking of a $3.4 million major capital improvement project that included addition of “The Boot” which extended the full course to 3.37 miles, adding the famed blue rail, and relocating the start/finish line and pit area to their present locations. James Hunt emerged the victor of both the 1976 and 1977 U.S. Grand Prix, races that were tightly contested as opposed to the three previous U.S.

Races to Remember – South Africa 1962 Hello and welcome, you’re listening to Races to Remember, a mini series brought to you by Sidepodcast. During this second series of memorable races, we’re looking specifically at those which have broken rec- ords or stood out because they are the longest, the shortest, the highest or the lowest. So far, we’ve looked at a number of different feats, but today’s is slightly different. It’s the South African Grand Prix of 1962. In 1962, the South African race was held at the Prince George Circuit in East London – a destination For- mula One only visited a handful of times before the action moved to Kyalami. What’s special about this race is that it was the latest an event had been held in the year, taking place on the 29th December. Not only was it a late one, but there had been a whopping three months wait following the last championship race, and the title was still up for grabs. Graham Hill was leading the standings, with 39 points, and Jim Clark was chasing him in second place, with 30. The top six positions would get points, the winner receiving nine. Jim Clark needed to win the race to secure the championship, and although that would only put them on equal points, the system back then only selected the best five results. That would give Clark the title. Clark was driving the new Lotus 25, designed by Colin Chapman for the 1962 season. It was a unique de- sign, with a far stronger cockpit than others on the grid, a chassis that weighed a lot less, and a car that was generally a lot lower to the ground.

  • THE NATAL GRAND PRIX (22Nd December, 1962)
THE SPRINGBOK SERIES OF 1962 Formula One motor racing was very strong in South Africa in the early I960's. There was a colossal entry for the two races prior to the South African Grand Prix of 1962. The races were the Rand Grand Prix at the Kyalami Circuit on December 15th and the Natal Grand Prix at Westmead on December 22nd. So popular were they that there was not enough room for everyone who entered and so the organisers ruled that there would be a qualifying time. At Kyalami it was 1 min 45 sees. THE RAND GRAND PRIX: (15th December, 1962) The entrants for the Rand Grand Prix included the usual Lotus and BRM teams as well as others from England. There were also Coopers, other older Lotuses, a Lola and specials of South African build like the LDS, the Assegai and the Netuar. However, by far the most unusual Clark led all the way and won the race itself, followed closely by entrant was the much modified 1958 Lotus Seven Series One of Cape Taylor, Surtees and Hocking with the Seven finishing in a respectable Towner. • Note 66 the 'Standard' Grand Prix Suspension
Note 66 The 'Standard' Grand Prix suspension (The contributions of Hubert Charles, Charles and John Cooper, and Colin Chapman) Insofar as a modem Grand Prix car, with vast aero downforce, has any suspension – "grovelling around a few millimetres above the road”*, as Keith Duckworth once remarked acidly, and then being rammed over kerbs with dampers solid in shock to prevent the all important floor from being torn off the car - its basic layout goes back to the R-type MG of1935. The R-type MG At that date Hubert Charles designed a racing chassis suspension which differed completely, not only from the rigid-axled layouts of all successful pre-1934 racing cars and previous MGs, but also from the 'new order' introduced to GPs in 1934 by Mercedes-Benz and Auto-Union. These latter cars had independent front and rear suspension (IFS and IRS) with an inclined roll axis, low front/high rear, giving an oversteer characteristic very embarrassing with high power/weight ratio. Charles' solution was double transverse links at each corner. With links initially parallel to the road, the roll axis was at ground level. Front and rear suspensions were connected by a very stiff box-backbone chassis. A somewhat high centre-of-gravity (CG) height/track ratio meant that the R-type rolled considerably on corners (a photo shows an outer front wheel at 100 positive camber on a Brooklands 'road' circuit hairpin (810)), to the unease of drivers used to near-flat cornering and, admittedly, to the reduction of cornering force from the positively-cambered wheels.
