The City I Chose as My Home: Calgary’s Economic History Through the Eyes of an Optimistic Newcomer In 2017 ECCA’s own Dained Vera researched, created and led a new Jane’s Walk* through the Eau Claire community. This fascinating and eclectic Walk kept all 26 participants actively engaged despite the rain. The following is part of an on-going report on some of the fascinating places on the tour. During the first half of the last century Eau Claire was the site of humble workers’ homes, the factories, the mill and the laundries. At noon “from one side, you’d hear the dairy whistle, from the other, the sawmill”. You’d also hear hoof-beats as horse-drawn wagons and carts delivered bread, produce, milk, laundry and ice.

In 1911, construction was completed on a new brick commercial building that would be home to a number of businesses over the years but became so associated with publishing the Farm and Ranch Review (1911 – 1966) that it was named the Graphic Arts Building in 1917.
