Rated “Good” and “Outstanding” Pupils love this school. They work and play exceptionally well together. Ofsted 4th October 2016

Parents describe the school as ‘phenomenal’ in its pastoral care for children, embracing the whole family.

The Curriculum

All areas of the National Curriculum are taught across the key stages and we aim to give our children the best possible start by developing the key skills in maths, literacy and ICT. We have good facilities for ICT and believe it should be at the heart of 21st century education. Much of our curriculum is practical – we believe that children learn by being active and doing. Trips and visits play a vital role in our school and classes are encouraged to get out and about as often as possible! Music, sport and the arts play an important part in our curriculum too.

Children in Reception follow the “Early Years Foundation Stage” guidance which encourages learning through play activities with more structured learning developing when the child is ready to learn.

There are two classes: a reception an infant class (Class 1) and a junior class (Class 2). Curriculum planning takes into account the differentiation of age and ability within each teaching group and a variety of teaching and learning styles is used accordingly. Reception children have their own teaching assistant who works closely with the teachers in Class 1 in the planning, delivery and assessment of their education.

Pastoral Care and Discipline

In class and at play, our pupils are supervised to the highest level. Our staff are interested in the emotional well-being and development of all children as individuals. They are able to offer guidance, support and understanding to foster self-discipline and independence. A friendly atmosphere in which politeness, respect and Christian values are highly valued provides the context for this.

All the children are encouraged to be aspirational and take pride in their school work and this is reinforced consistently with praise and encouragement.

We have behaviour and discipline policies which set out in some detail the types of behaviours that are acceptable and unacceptable. Our main concern is for the safety and well being of all children during the school day.

The school is part of a Congleton schools KiVA anti-bullying initiative.

Bosley Bobkins

Our pre-school group, Bosley Bobkins operates from their own classroom every day of the week. Children are accepted from the age of two years up until they start Reception. They can stay for flexible sessions – from full-time to just one or two. A session is a morning, 8.50 – 12pm, or an afternoon 1 – 3.15pm and children can have a school lunch or bring their own packed lunch if they stay all day. Most of the children then transfer to Bosley St Mary’s School. Bosley Bobkins follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Guidance for appropriately aged children. Contact details can be found on the website.

Secondary Education

Many children from Bosley St. Mary's transfer to Eaton Bank School in Congleton at 11+ years of age. We have an excellent relationship with this school and the other local secondary schools that parents may choose. We actively participate in their induction and liaison procedures ensuring that the transition from Primary to Secondary education is as smooth as possible for our pupils.

Admissions Policy

The school follow the admissions policy of Cheshire East Local Authority, which is to provide one admission date in September for all children who are five years of age during that academic year.

If parents are considering sending their child/children to Bosley St. Mary's, they are invited to contact the Head Teacher to arrange a visit to the school and discuss all aspects of school life.

Bosley School enjoys a close relationship with Bosley Bobkins Pre-school which meets in their recently completed customised building five days a week. The children learn, through structured play activities, to socialise together and develop pre-school skills.

New Reception pupils are invited to attend introductory sessions at the school in the last term before they are due to start school in the September. This helps them to become familiar with school life. Our aim is to help all children to feel welcome at Bosley and to support them in settling into the daily routines of the school. The school has also recently introduced home visits for new reception children.

Education Needs

The school has a Special Education Needs and Disability Co-ordinator SENDCO. The Coordinator follows the Department of Education's Code of Practice on the identification and assessment of children with special educational needs to provide a structured analysis of the specific requirements of these pupils. This can include liaising with the child, teachers, parents, the Learning Support Service, the Psychological Service, Mental Health Services, the Health Service and Social Services. An individual education programme may be devised for a child with Special Education Needs as well as visits from the Learning Support Service or Educational Psychologist and other support services.

In catering for children with Special Education Needs, we aim to:

 Promote the early identification and intervention for children with Special Education Needs,

 Identify gifted / talented / able children,

 Help a child with Special Education Needs to fulfil their potential,

 Promote an awareness of children with Special Education Needs,

 Foster good relations between staff, parents, support services and other outside agencies,

 Promote inclusive education.

Every effort is made to provide all children, including those with Special Education Needs, with a broad and balanced curriculum. Individual Education Plans and differentiation of activities and tasks within the classroom are some of the options available. The child's parents will be invited to regularly review and contribute to their child's plans and encouraged to work with their child at home to reinforce the work done in school.

Whatever difficulties any child at Bosley may have, the school aims to encourage and recognise achievement for all.

Higher Attaining Children

Higher attaining children are offered enrichment opportunities within and occasionally beyond the class. The school teaches children according to their attainment and organises mathematics and literacy groups accordingly.

Parental Involvement

The level of parental involvement in school enhances the children's education in various ways and is greatly appreciated by staff.

Parents are invited into school several times throughout the year to both formal parents’ evenings and informal drop-in sessions. We have close links with our parents and they feel able to come into school at any time to discuss matters openly with staff. If you have any concerns about your child please do not hesitate to discuss them with the teacher or Head Teacher if they arise.

Holidays

A list of holidays for the current school year is available on the school website.

School is open for 190 days in an academic year. Legislation requires schools to set aside another five days for staff training, when the school will be closed to pupils. These dates are arranged by the school and parents advised by letter as soon as they are confirmed.

The school follows government guidelines holidays during term time and these guidelines can be found on the school website. Parents should not take their children out of school except in exceptional circumstances as holidays in term-time and long absences can seriously disrupt a child's progress.

If your child has to be away during term you are required to request authorisation from the school.

Charging Policy

Visits taking place during school hours cannot be charged for. We do hope, however, that parents see the tremendous educational value of school visits and continue to make voluntary contributions towards the costs when requested to do so. This enables us to provide a much wider range of opportunities.

No pupil will be penalised if parents are unable to contribute to the costs of a school visit. Please contact the Head Teacher in confidence to discuss, should any difficulties arise.

The following activities may be charged for:

 Activities that take place mainly or solely outside school hours.

 Board and lodgings on residential trips. However, pupils in receipt of some benefits may be exempt from these costs. Please contact the school office for details. Safety and Security

The safeguarding of children is of paramount importance and we aim to make our school a safe environment in which our children can flourish. All staff and regular volunteer helpers have to undergo DBS checks and we have systems in place which help identify vulnerable children and offer them support.

All external doors have a security system fitted which restricts access into the building. The pupil entrance has a timer which allows entry at the beginning and end of the day. At all other times, parents and visitors must use the main entrance so that staff can monitor who is entering and leaving the building. Visitors log their details in our visitors’ book.

The area directly outside the school is marked with zigzag lines and should be kept clear of vehicles at all times. Parking is available in the lay-by, in the Queens Arms car park and outside the church.

Our daily menu offers two choices which include healthy, home-cooked options. Dinner money for the coming week is collected on a Monday morning. All cheques coming into the school are usually payable to 'Bosley St. Mary's School Fund' except cheques for school lunch money which must be made payable to 'Cheshire East Borough Council'. The cost of a school lunch is £2.30 per child per day. Children may also request a school lunch on a daily basis and we often have “special” themed lunches. These may be paid for on the day.

Alternatively, a packed lunch can be brought into the school by your child and eaten under supervision. As part of our commitment to achieving the national healthy school standard we ask parents and carers to include healthy choices. We do not allow sweets to be brought into school, even as part of a packed lunch. Food and Drink During the Day

Pupils have access to a water cooler throughout the day as water is known to improve concentration. Pupils are encouraged to bring sports-style water bottles into the classroom and maintain their hydration throughout the day.

The school is part of the National Fruit for Schools Scheme. All children are offered unlimited fruit during morning break as we encourage the importance of eating fresh fruit and vegetables each day. Medicines in School

Occasionally a child may need to complete courses of tablets or medicines at school, or take asthma treatments. We are only able to administer prescribed medicines. These medicines must be handed to a teacher by an adult to be kept in a safe place. We need written permission from the parent/guardian to enable us to administer the medicines, as well as clear instructions about the correct dosage. A standard form issued by Cheshire East Local Authority for this purpose must be used and is available from the school staff room.

For the safety of all pupils, no other medicine or remedies should be brought into the school, with the exception of asthma-related medicine for which alternative arrangements can be made. Please contact the school office for further information.

Complaints Procedure

Most complaints are settled quickly and informally at school level. In the event of any parental dissatisfaction with any aspect of a child's education, or any matter relating to the school, it should in the first instance be discussed with the teacher concerned. If this is not satisfactory then the matter should be discussed with the Head Teacher.

If the matter cannot be resolved satisfactorily at this point then the Governing Body should be informed. The final stage of the procedure is referral to the Local Authority. A copy of the school's Complaints Policy is available from the school office.
