Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 1 Galley Hall Hailey Lane Hailey SG13 7NY Grade ll Listed Dating back to 1374 it was originally a farmhouse. By 1765 it was known as Galley Hall. It became a beer house in 1830.It was extended in the 19 th century. Source – The Galley Hall 2 The Sun Amwell Street Hoddesdon EN11 8TX McMullen The original building was built in around 1886. The current building was built after a stable fire in 1977. 3 The Star 105 High Street Hoddesdon EN11 8RN Wetherspoons Grade ll Listed It was know as The Salisbury Arms when Wetherspoons purchased the public house in 2013. It was known as The Star in the early 16 th century. Later it was called the Black Lion or Lyon and in early 19 th century it became The Salisbury Arms. It contained a courthouse, believed to have been built by Lord Salisbury in 1610, adjoining the inn on the north side. The Salisbury Arms sign that used to span the road was the last of the three in Hoddesdon to be pulled down. In the 1920’s there was a whippet dog race track behind the inn. The rear extension built in the 19 th century was formerly a brewery. The maltmen of Hertford would come to Hoddesdon market every week and would meet at the Black Lion then crossing the heath on their way home looking out for highwayman. Travellers who stayed at The Salisbury Arms could also watch cock fights set up in the inn’s own pit or play bowls on its green. During the restoration a lot of the pubs historic features were revealed and these are now on display for visitors. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 4 The Bell 1 Burford Street Hoddesdon Grade ll Listed This first appeared in the records in 1546 as a private residence owned by the Rector of Amwell in 1546. In 1615 it became an Inn known as the The Hollibush. The name was changed to The Blue Bell in 1625. It is believed that the name bell originated from its nearness to the town’s curfew and alarm bell. This was housed in the nearby old chapel of St Katherine. By 1633 it was just known as The Bell. In 1756 the inn was noted to have stabling for twenty horses and six men. Source – The Bell 5 The White Swan 95 High Street Hoddesdon EN11 8TN Grade ll Listed. A former coaching Inn The White Swan (Swanne) dates back to the 16 th century and is one of the few which retains its original name. The building has exposed timbers and the stump of its long sign can still be seen. Described by ‘Pevsner as “visually the most striking timber framed inn in the district”. The pub once had a slaughterhouse and cattle pound in the yard with a smithy next door. In 1756, it had stabling for 60 horses, more than any other inn in the county. 6 King William IV 197 Lord Street Hoddesdon EN11 8NQ Grade ll Listed. A 17 th century timber framed building with modern brick and rough cast walls, the east bays were formerly cottages. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 7 The Golden Lion 23 High Street Hoddesdon EN11 8SX Grade ll Listed. This public house is one of the oldest inns in Hoddesdon being built in 1535. It was originally known as the White Hinde. The door was originally between the present public bar entrance and the bay window at the north end of the inn. It is believed to have been a former coaching inn. 8 The George lll (The Venue) 8 High Street Hoddesdon EN11 8BL The George lll was originally a cottage, built in 1806, and received its first licence in 1866. It is now the home of ‘The Venue’ and features regular live music. 9 The Bull 74 High Road Broxbourne EN10 7DZ McMullens The earliest mention of an inn of this name is 1521 and the earliest known licence was granted in 1618. The original building was demolished and replaced with a modern inn on the site of the old stables and garden in 1972. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 10 White Bear 95 High Road Broxbourne EN10 7BN The White Bear was built in 1720 on the site of an earlier inn, previously called ‘The Anne of Cleves’ it has been refurbished and reverted back to its former name. 11 The Old Star High Road Wormley EN10 6LE McMullens The earliest reference of the pub is 1707. It previously ran in competition with the pub the ‘New Star’ located on its North side until this was converted into flats in 1937, and then demolished in the 1950’s. The Old Star was rebuilt in 1935. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 12 Queens Head 66 High Road Wormley EN10 6JN Grade ll Listed. A timber framed building dating from the 17 th century or possibly earlier. One of the oldest buildings in Wormley, It is said that courts were held here in the 18 th century. It has been refurbished recently and now prides its self on its food. 13 The Bulls Head High Road Turnford EN10 6BZ McMullens Grade ll Listed The Bulls Head is a 15 th century timber framed building. Taken over by McMullens in 1912. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 14 The Plough 57 Flamstead End Road Cheshunt Herts EN8 0JB McMullens A sixteenth century public house that originally had an actual plough used as an inn sign. In 1936 the pub was demolished to make way for the present building. 15 The Old Anchor 188 High Street Cheshunt Herts EN8 0AY McMullens The original Anchor has been a pub since 1892 but was knocked down and replaced by the present Anchor which was entirely rebuilt. 16 The Freemasons 2 Flamstead End Road Cheshunt Herts EN8 0HH Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne The Freemasons was a converted nineteenth century cottage that was extended in c1928. Prior to the recent refurbishment it was known as The Jolly Bricklayers. 17 The Old English Gentleman 253 Turners Hill Cheshunt Herts EN8 9DG Originally owned in 1782 by George English, when it was a beer-house. It used to have attached stables and a smithy with a brewery on the premises. The pub was rebuilt around 1892. 18 The Green Dragon 62 Churchgate Cheshunt Grade ll Listed. Dating from 16 th / 17 th century and common to this period, trials were conducted in public houses and many trials took place in The Green Dragon. The building forms part of the historic Churchgate. It was one of the Theobalds Palace buildings that used to house foreign ambassadors when they were in residence. 19 O’Sheas 99 Turners Hill Cheshunt In 1660 highway man John Whitney was landlord of the pub. The pub has changed names over the years from ‘The George’ , Force & Firkin’ ‘St George’ and currently ‘O’Sheas’. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 20 The Maltsters 177 Windmill Lane Cheshunt Herts EN8 9AW McMullens The original pub ‘Railway Tavern’ was opened in 1842 and rebuilt in 1975. It was converted in to a pub from two cottages that stood to the west of the current building. 21 The Windmill 210 Windmill Lane Cheshunt Herts EN8 9AF The Windmill built in 1891 replacing an earlier pub with the same name. 22 The Red Cow 198 Windmill Lane Cheshunt Herts EN8 9AF Licensed from 1854. 23 The Crocodile College Road Cheshunt Herts EN8 9NQ McMullens Previously two terrace cottages; the pub was converted in approximately 1806, possibly for the workers in the brick fields. The pub was demolished in 1978, with a new pub built on a site to the rear. It is believed the pub was previously named ‘The Pheasant’ Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 24 The King James Lynton Parade Turners Hill Cheshunt Herts EN8 8LF Wetherspoons Previously retail used converted in to a pub in 2001, Takes its name from King James 1, whose royal palace ‘Theobalds’ stood about 1.2km from the pub in the grounds now known as Cedars Park. 25 The Roman Urn 137 Crossbrook Street Cheshunt Herts EN8 8LY The former public house was the shop next door to the current Roman Urn, dating possibly from the 17 th century. The present public house was built in 1840. The urn is said to be a Grecian wine vessel found about 200 years ago in a nearby field together with a brick on which is inscribed “Cor unum via una” which means ‘One Heart, One Way’. The brick is mounted above the urn. 26 The Coach and Horses 36 Crossbrook Street Waltham Cross Circa 1901 Originally built in 1756 when it had beds for four and stabling for ten horses. The inn had a ‘Gibbet’ which stood by the roadside here in the 17th century. The current building was built in 1850 to replace the much older building which lay further to the east and had pleasure grounds which attracted people from north London and pond to the front of it. It is now the home of El Curiso grill and tapas. Public Houses in the Borough of Broxbourne 27 The Wheatsheaf 271 High Street Waltham Cross McMullens Built pre 1892 28 The Vine Inn 207 High Street Waltham Cross EN8 7AY McMullens The Vine public house on right hand side in 1953, the nucleus of which is an early 18 th century cottage which probably obtained its first licence in 1869.
