From sudden cold to sudden heat and back to sudden P9 cold again, some plants have been lost, but certainly we enjoyed a 'host of Golden daffodils', to Easter egg quote the poet, William Wordsworth. Then we enjoyed a truly hot Bank Holiday weekend at the hunt beginning of May; I hope that sets the trend for a long hot summer. On that horticultural theme, a lovely lady called Jackie de Gruchy has entered a poem called 'Gardening' and no doubt there will be many entries for the Gardens competition in the Parish in Bloom event. Nance Hicklin has written an introductory piece about the Parish in Bloom competition. A most interesting and educational article has been written by local St Saviour dairy farmer, Paul P14 Houze. He explains how agricultural practices have changed over the years and decades to become more environmentally practical and hospitable. The welfare and health of animals is paramount, and Longueville field husbandry and maintenance of hedges, hedgerows and trees takes equal importance. Road safety Our Parish Personality is Eric Bastiman, who has enjoyed a very interesting career. While working in Weights & Measures in the 1970s, he told me how he used to drive out to visit farms to check the weights on the tractors! Roy Le Herissier has written a fascinating article inside this issue. A full report on the Road Safety measures in Longueville and Chasse Brunet, written by Dave Malpas of the Infrastructure Department, is published to help parishioners understand the measures taken. Photographs illustrate the particular areas concerned where changes have been made. Also, a report P15 from the Roads Committee for the Parish, written by Geoff Esnouf, a Committee member, which clarifies Parish the manner and methods by which the Committee make our roads safe and keeps them properly maintained. personality Meanwhile, De La Salle has continued its celebratory events for its centenary year. They really have Eric had quite an eventful year, and it seems all events went according to plan and were thoroughly enjoyed Bastiman by those who took part. The Plat Douet School Girls Football team have been playing well as a winning team. Full reports and pictures inside. Continuing the sporting theme, I met and interviewed a delightful lady called Sheila Price, who has enjoyed a busy and successful career in Netball. St Paul's Football Teams have been playing very successfully against local parishes' teams and away games. Brendan Boyle has P20 written a report with pictures inside this issue. In Georgetown, a busy programme of concerts has been arranged by local concert organiser, The Rowland Heaven, who has been working with musicians to create the 'Thursday Night is Music Night' Centenary series, which has become very popular over the years, and raised excellent funds for the Methodist celebrations church. Roy Le Herissier met and interviewed the most recent Minister of Eden Chapel, the Rev Nico continue Hilmy-Jones. Although she has been resident in Jersey for a while, she does have an interesting life story. Now that St Saviour's Church has had a long awaited makeover, the interior does look quite magnificent! There are tablets on the walls which I, for one, had never read because I could not see them well enough to read in the darkness! But with the new lighting arrangements and glorious P22 lanterns hanging from the dizzy heights of the ceiling, there is so much to see, including the varnished A potted floors and aisles. The new 'servery' has been created from the original pews and with smart kitchen history of cupboards, too, it really is fabulous. You really must visit your Parish Church. St Saviour’s Anyone who is keen to write or take photographs of Parish events, can certainly do so, and send in their contributions to the Parish office, or direct to me by email at [email protected]. If you know of church any event that should be covered and promoted in La Cloche, please let me know. Cara Billot Miller - P25 A Netball legend Apology from the publisher Readers may have noticed a printing error on page 23 of the last edition of La Cloche at the beginning of the article on the Beresford Street Kitchen. We would like to apologise to everyone connected to the Aspire Charitable Trust and to the author of a previously published item who found their words unintelligibly intermingled! The error was in no way down to the Editor, or the editorial team at La Cloche who work tirelessly and with good humour to compile the magazine.
