RSV CIVIL ENGINEERING MATERIALS LABORATORY (Soil tests, Aggregate Tests, Asphalt Tests, Concrete Tests, Water Tests, Construction Quality Control Geophysical Investigation, and Geotechnical Investigations)

RSV02102019-7 GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING SERVICES Geotechnical Engineering services offered by our company are divided into Five Divisions; mainly Geotechnical Designs, Geotechnical investigations, Geophysical Surveys, Geotechnical Construction and Laboratory Testing.

1. Geotechnical Designs We are experts in Design of shallow and deep foundations, Design of large box Culverts, Slope stability Analysis, Design of conventional retaining walls, Flexible Pavement design, Pipeline Design, Rigid Pavement Design, Geotechnical Modeling using softwares such as GEO5, PLAXIS, GEOSLOPE and centrifuge modeling.

Shallow Foundations: These foundations include; Square, rectangular, strip and circular footings, Mat/Slab-on-grade foundations. Spread footings are structural members used to support columns and walls in order to transmit and distribute their loads to the soil. Normally load bearing walls spread the applied structural loads on a strip footing and transmit the loads on a large soil Area.

(d) Strip Footing Mat/slab on grade Foundations: These foundations are classified under shallow foundations. They are used to distribute heavy column and wall loads across the entire building area, to lower the contact pressure compared to the conventional spread footings. They can be constructed near the ground surface or at the bottom of basements. In high raised buildings, these foundations can be several meters thick with extensive reinforcing to ensure relatively uniform load transfer.

Deep Foundations; These foundations include Driven piles, Cast in- place piles, Micro piles and Screw piles

Driven piles fall within one of the fastest methods to produce high capacity bearing elements when the depth of rock is reasonable.

RSV02102019-7 Cast in-place piles: This is a very common technique in foundation construction industry. As well as stand-alone piles and they are often used extensively in secant walls and as part of other foundation techniques.

Micro piles: These are piles designed and used in very limited space or headroom is available for execution with conventional pilling rig. They are also called mini piles which are often used for underpinning and constructed using high-strength, small-diameter steel casing and/or threaded bar.

Screw piles: These are designed and used to support on grade slabs in low consistency fine soils or in situations where loose granular formations are detected. This system helps to improve on the soil bearing capacity as well as limiting any settlement situation likely to occur. This system can be used for new or existing structures depending on the need at hand.

Pavements: Design of rigid and flexible pavements

2. Geotechnical Investigations Our company offers geotechnical investigation services to our clients for the proposed construction sites such as, Supervision of drilling works including logging of strata, Geotechnical Report writing (factual and interpretative), Borehole drilling and sampling, Standard penetration Tests, Dynamic cone penetrometer tests (DCP), Dynamic Probing Light tests (DPL), Shear vane tests, Test pitting, Augering, Permeability test for Rock and Geological field mapping.

RSV CIVIL ENGINEERING MATERIALS LABORATORY (Soil tests, Aggregate Tests, Asphalt Tests, Concrete Tests, Water Tests, Construction Quality Control Geophysical Investigation, and Geotechnical Investigations)

RSV02102019-7 Geotechnical investigations We provide consultancy services in supervision of drilling works including logging of soil strata and giving technical advice on the sampling strata depending on the project scope and the prevailing site conditions. Borehole drilling and sampling; We conduct borehole drilling for bridge piers and bridge abutments, Large box Culverts, Basements, High raised building foundations, irrigation scheme projects, landfill and man-made grounds, recreational centers, Hydropower dam sites, Transmission lines, Electrical substations, Road intersections and fly-overs, Quarry sites and Tunnel sites. We perform Standard Penetrations tests (SPTs) which are conducted at specified intervals of the soil strata to determine soil bearing capacities and values obtained are used in design of foundations. We monitor Ground water tables during drilling process and we install piezometers after borehole completion in scenarios of ground water to determine whether it’s a patched water table or permanent water table which helps us to determine the foundation type, founding depth and construction techniques to use.

Test pit Excavation: This is a method of soil investigation used to obtain clear observation in change of layer of the strata and therefore come up with a comprehensive judgment of the soil profile. Test pits can be excavated using both mechanical excavator and hand tool methods depending on the site conditions. Test pitting is fasted method used when assessing the performance, the subgrade material for Road alignment and also used in assessing the founding depth for shallow foundations.

RSV02102019-7 Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Tests (DCP): This equipment is used in evaluation of pavement performance and evaluation of compacted fill layers. It is also used to determine the rough estimate of soils bearing capacity for shallow foundations.

Light Dynamic Probe Test (DPL). This is a continuous dynamic penetration test for determining the relative density of the soil with depth using a 10kg hammer. The values obtained are used to estimate of soils bearing capacity for both shallow foundations and intermediate foundation (1.5m

Shear vane Test. This is used to measure the in- situ undrained shear strength of cohesive soils such as clays, silts and silty clays.

Geological field Mapping: This is the process of selecting an area of interest and identifying all geological aspects of that area with the purpose of preparing a detailed geological report which must include a map. Geological field mapping is carried out to include the exploration of natural resources and for academic purposes. It involves planning, data collection and reporting. You do not need to worry; we are the experts in this area.

RSV02102019-7 Hand Augering: Augers are used in cohesive and other soft soils. They may either be operated manually or mechanically. Hand augers are used up to a depth of up to 6 m. Mechanically operated augers are used for greater depths and they can also be used in gravelly soils. We have expertise in obtaining 1.0m long undisturbed samples from auger holes.

The double ring infiltration test is carried out to measure the infiltration rate of insitu soils. The test is carried out in accordance with ASTM D 3385-03. It is usually carried out within the root zone near the ground surface level. Prior to carrying out the test, the ground has to first be levelled to remove any possible loose material and obstacles.

RSV02102019-7 PILE TESTING SERVICES As a quality control measure, we conduct pile testing (Static pile load test and Low strain integrity test) for piles under installation to ensure that they constructed in accordance to design code and project specifications.

Low strain integrity testing We execute low strain integrity test by pulse echo or transient response method using Pile integrity Tester (PIT) manufactured by PDI.

The Pile integrity Tester (PIT) gives a peace of mind that the pile or shaft is free from major cracks and voids prior to construction of superstructures. It may be use on most concrete foundations. The PIT may also be used to test piles in integral structure, such as those supporting the existing bridges or Tower and may assess their length.

RSV02102019-7

The PIT performs wave equation-based non-destructive foundation investigations known as Low Strain Impact Integrity Tests or Low Strain Dynamic Tests. These tests may be performed by the Pulse (or Sonic) Echo or Transient Response Methods. With the PIT, any form of the test is performed fast, potentially making it possible to test every pile on a job site.

The PIT test consists of attaching one or two accelerometers to the foundation and using a hand-held hammer to impact it. The PIT collects the acceleration data and displays curves that reveal any significant changes in cross section that may exist along the shaft. The PIT- W software post-processes the data and generates reports, while the PIT-S software simulates a PIT test and performs simplified signal matching to assess the shape of the foundation.
