Signed: ____________________________ Date: _________________ 2 Abstract The “Woman question” in Islam, under its various titles – “women in Islam”, “women’s rights in Islam”, “the status of women in Islam”, “gender in Islam” – is one that has been a topic of heated debate for the last century, and continues to be a field of intense debate and thriving scholarship. Likewise, pioneers of modern Islamic reform are often referred to in relation to modern discourses on gender, and the issue of gender is often touched on in discussions of these pioneers’ reform projects, but often in a generic and superficial manner. While the Egyptian reformist scholar Muhammad µAbduh is a figure often referred to in this context, this aspect of his thought has never been studied in detail. This study aims to deepen the study of these two questions – gender and reform – and the intersection between them. Various general books on “the father of Islamic reform” exist, often devoting a few pages to “women’s reform” (or more commonly referring to the question of women’s reform under the few pages devoted to µAbduh’s “social reform”), creating a rather vague view of this critical figure’s views on this topical question, often with unsubstantiated generalisations. This study aims at addressing this through a detailed study and analysis of µAbduh’s own discourse on women in order to discover its themes, distinctive characteristics, the questions it poses and the answers it attempts to give, as well as the tensions and contradictions within it. The study locates the gender question within the bigger context of the reform discourse that emerged in a specific historical context in response to the Muslim world’s encounter with modernity. The study further addresses the extent of µAbduh’s influence on subsequent discourses on women and his legacy which continues to be contested and competed over. Abstract: Islam is a religion of renewal. The renewed aspects of Islam can be grouped into five. First is the belief system of the polytheist system that is renewed into monotheistic. Second, the familial system of the patriarchal system that becomes bilateral & egalitarian. Third, the social system of hierarchical-structured that becomes egalitarian. Fourth, the economic system of the bourgeois-capitalistthat is reformed to a justice economy. Fifth, the collective (tribal) responsibility system that is renewed by Islam to become individual. The role of wife is one of many that is renewed by Islam in regards of the familial system. In line with it, in Indonesia where Muslim is the majority, it has tried various efforts to ensure the social justice that Islam provides to the wife. One of these efforts is enacted in marriage regulation in which wife quite hard in rights like it should be. This paper seeks to show the social justice that Islam provides for women with thematic studies of the Quran. Then shows why social security provided by Islam has not been obtained in society or even judiciary, especially the Islamic Courts in Indonesia. The fact that I come from an ordinary family, financially, this dream seemed even more impossible to me then. However, thanks to the help of many noble people around me this dream has finally come true and I left for Germany in October 2018. Matters about hijab, women's position as second class as well as the role of women in the family is among arguments that is thrown by critics to show that Islam degrades the women's position. Similar allegations, however, said to Sayyid Qutb, who has been recognized as the greatest innovator in Islamic thought in the twentieth century as well as a commonly misunderstood Islamic scholar. This article will look at this accusation against Sayyid Qutb objectively through investigating his original works to reveal his real views on the topics. The result shows that Sayyid Qutb views on women are constant throughout his entire literature writings and he can sustain and defend his sympathy to women in this era, and try to better their condition by the way back to the fundamentals of Islam. What is more important is that in some cases, the lack of women's intellectuality has been introduced as the reason for not consulting with them. Today, the presence of women in the scientific community and their expertise in different areas has increased dramatically when compared to the past. Is it possible to believe that consultation with women is absolutely prohibited in Islamic tradition? This study tried to answer this question using a descriptive-analytical design and library data collection. The results showed that firstly, the lack of women's intellectuality doesn't mean the lack of their values and only refers to some genetic differences which cause the power of men in thinking and the power of women in feeling. This also means the relative weakness of women in empirical reasoning that is created by the socio-cultural situations throughout history. Secondly, the Quranic verses and the tradition state that women can also reach the salvation and that they directly or indirectly ordain consulting with women and accepting their advisory vote. The Islamic traditions stating the prohibition of consulting with woman are just mentioned to be applied to some certain cases.
