UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Against the Flow: Impassive Modernism in Arabic and Hebrew Literatures A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Shir Alon 2017 © Copyright by Shir Alon 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Against the Flow: Impassive Modernism in Arabic and Hebrew Literatures by Shir Alon Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Gil Hochberg, Co-Chair Professor Nouri Gana, Co-Chair Against the Flow: Impassive Modernism in Arabic and Hebrew Literatures elaborates two interventions in contemporary studies of Middle Eastern Literatures, Global Modernisms, and Comparative Literature: First, the dissertation elaborates a comparative framework to read twentieth century Arabic and Hebrew literatures side by side and in conversation, as two literary cultures sharing, beyond a contemporary reality of enmity and separation, a narrative of transition to modernity. The works analyzed in the dissertation, hailing from Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, and Tunisia, emerge against the Hebrew and Arabic cultural and national renaissance movements, and the establishment of modern independent states in the Middle East. The dissertation stages encounters between Arabic and Hebrew literary works, exploring the ii parallel literary forms they develop in response to shared temporal narratives of a modernity outlined elsewhere and already, and in negotiation with Orientalist legacies. Secondly, the dissertation develops a generic-formal framework to address the proliferation of static and decadent texts emerging in a cultural landscape of national revival and its aftermaths, which I name impassive modernism. Viewed against modernism’s emphatic features, impassive modernism is characterized by affective and formal investment in stasis, immobility, or immutability: suspension in space or time and a desire for nonproductivity. -

Leering for the Plot: Visual Curiosity in Apuleius and Others KIRK FREUDENBURG Yale University Winkler’s Auctor and Actor taught us to pay close attention to how listeners listen in Apuleius’s Metamorphoses, and how readers (featured as charac- ters) go about the act of interpreting, often badly, inside the novel’s many inset tales. Scenes of hermeneutical activity, he shows, have implications for readers on the outside looking in. My approach in this paper is largely in the same vein, but with a different emphasis. I want to watch the book’s inset watchers, not ‘rather than’ but ‘in addition to’ reading its readers. Expanding upon two recent articles by Niall Slater, I will focus on how their watching is figured, and what it does to them, by transfixing and transforming them in various regular (as we shall see) and suggestively ‘readable’ ways.1 My main point will concern the pleasures of the text that are produced and set out for critical inspection by the novel’s scenes of scopophilia, scenes that invite us to feast our eyes on characters happily abandoned to their desires. They draw us in to watch, and secretly enjoy the show. And in doing that they have the potential to tell us something not just about the bewitching powers of the book as a lush meadow of enticements, but about ourselves as stubborn mules who are easily enticed by its many pleasurable divertissements. Curi- osity is a problem in the book, something we load on Lucius’ back as his famous problem. That is clear enough. -

Jihad term often used for things that are destructive by western scholars and society. For them, jihad is synonymous with terrorism. The similarization of the word Jihad with the word terrorism in the Western perception is strongly reinforced by a series of terror committed by Muslims in the name of jihad. These acts have been increasingly affecting the interpretation of the word jihad in a negative way although in reality that is not the case in a contemporary context. Jihad in contemporary understanding is not just a war against visible enemies but also a war against the devil and carnality. Even a war against visible enemies that are written in classical fiqh books has now replaced by a contemporary interpretation of jihad against the enemies, as was done by Dr. ZakirNaik. KEYWORDS:Concept, Jihad and Islam I. INTRODUCTION When the 9/11 attack hit the United States more than a decade ago, the term jihad became a trending topic worldwide. The US and other Western countries in general claim that the perpetrators of the 9/11 attack were following the doctrine of Jihad in Islam in order to fight against America and its allies around the world. -

Abstract: Islam is a religion of renewal. The renewed aspects of Islam can be grouped into five. First is the belief system of the polytheist system that is renewed into monotheistic. Second, the familial system of the patriarchal system that becomes bilateral & egalitarian. Third, the social system of hierarchical-structured that becomes egalitarian. Fourth, the economic system of the bourgeois-capitalistthat is reformed to a justice economy. Fifth, the collective (tribal) responsibility system that is renewed by Islam to become individual. The role of wife is one of many that is renewed by Islam in regards of the familial system. In line with it, in Indonesia where Muslim is the majority, it has tried various efforts to ensure the social justice that Islam provides to the wife. One of these efforts is enacted in marriage regulation in which wife quite hard in rights like it should be. This paper seeks to show the social justice that Islam provides for women with thematic studies of the Quran. Then shows why social security provided by Islam has not been obtained in society or even judiciary, especially the Islamic Courts in Indonesia. In fact, from 106 cases coming to the Islamic Court, only two of them providing the guarantee of the right of wife. 1 INTRODUCTION majority of thinkers still understand the Qur’an partially. I was clueless. It is true that since I was a child I often shared my dream of studying in Germany, even though if I was asked at that time how would I get to Germany, I would not give any answers. The fact that I come from an ordinary family, financially, this dream seemed even more impossible to me then. However, thanks to the help of many noble people around me this dream has finally come true and I left for Germany in October 2018. I confidently can claim it was one of the happiest moments I have ever had. This happiness was beyond description. I was so amazed that I had difficulty accepting this dream really come true. Even until a few months living in Germany, I was still often pensive and had difficulty believing that I was actually sitting in a class at Goettingen University, Germany with 22 other students from 16 countries. So fabulous. For this precious opportunity, I would like to humbly dedicate this thesis to all those who have played their part in helping me achieving many things to date. This problem raises a different stigma among Islamic legal experts. This study finds that there is a relationship between the tradition of bahilah and the role of the Banjar Muslim scholars in terms of the kaffarat of prayers which is being abandoned. This study seeks to uncover the background of the Banjar community's habit of death rituals based on Islamic methodology studies. The aim of this research is to find the relationship between Islamic cultures and fiqh in the practice of the Bahilah. Furthermore, the study aims at finding a customary ritual of the Banjar people who did not pray in their youth, as well as the people's views on this activity.The method conducted in this study is Mix Method, which uses a combination of library research and field research. To examine this study the author rests on the primary source of the work of Alfani Daud in Islam and Banjar Culture, while the secondary source is the study of Fiqh al-Islam wa Adillatuh by Wahbah al-Zuhaili. Pangeran Geusan Ulun No.116, Sumedang Sel., Sumedang, West Java 45311 Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Fiqh is a compulsory subject even becomes the core in education pesantren, madrasah and school, because fiqh will affect the real life of individual or society in worship (mahdhah) as well as in being muamalah. Teaching learning methods of fiqh in schools consists of: bandongan (wetonan) or lecture; sorogan/private; mudzakarah/musyawarah/munadzarah (discussion), tahfidz (memorizing), tathbiq (demonstration/socio drama) and so on. Teaching learning methods in madrasah or school basically are the same as in pesantren with different terms. Teaching learning methods in pesantren are certainly the forerunner of learning methods in madrasah and school, because historically pesantren is the oldest Islamic institution in Indonesia which presence along with the arrival of Islam into the archipelago which is in Perlak, the west coast of Sumatra in the 1st century of Hijriah. The differences of teaching learning system of fiqh on three educational institutions that are characteristics of each institution. In pesantren, fiqh is taught by non-classical systems. Teaching learning is based on the holly book of fiqh (kutub turats) are not regulated in the programmed syllabus, but adhering to the chapters contained in the holly book is examined. In madrasah, fiqh is a separate subject from a clump of Islamic Religious Education (PAI), while at school, fiqh as an integral part of the subject of PAI.
