Amel Tafsout

Born in , Amel Tafsout (‘Hopes of Spring’ in Arabic) is one of the finest champions of North African traditional and contemporary Maghreb Dance and has mesmerized audiences worldwide. Raised among the finest traditional dancers and musicians in Algeria, Amel has dedicated her life not only to raising awareness about her dance culture but also to facilitating dialogue and building cultural bridges with regard to Arab-North African women. Fluent in five languages, Amel lectures, teaches, performs and conducts anthropological research. She is the founder of Banat As Sahra (Germany) and The Tafsoutettes (England) and has performed with a wide range of music orchestras from Latin Jazz to North African.

Amel’s articles relating to dance, cultural traditions and women of the Maghreb have been published in academic and popular magazines. Inanna Iraqi Dance Festival in June 2018 in Estonia gave Amel an Award of acknowledgment and appreciation for her longstanding contributions in Arabic dance and its heritage. Riwaya Travel

NOTE ON SECURITY

As soon as you arrive, we will report you to the American Embassy of Algiers so that they are aware of your arrival. Moreover the ambassador has already made several tweets encouraging the Americans to visit Algeria.

In addition, we will take the most popular routes on our minibus trips. Especially in Kabylie where we will use the east-west motorway.

We will have throughout the stay, a Riwaya Travel employee who will have the mission to ensure the safety of tourists in Algeria as well as to make regular contacts with the authorities on site.

Climate:

- Mediterranean on all the north fringe which includes the coast and Tell Atlas (been hot and dry, wet and fresh winters); - Semi-arid on highlands in the center of the country; - And desert as soon as we cross the chain of the Saharan Atlas.

In winter, the temperatures remain mild, but it rains regularly.

In mountainous regions (Tlemcen mountains, Haute-Kabylie, Atlas), winters can be cold. Beyond 1,500 m, it snows from December to March.

DAY 1 — ALGIERS THE IMPRENABLE

Land in Algiers and enjoy the rest of the day to explore on your own. Arrival transfer from the airport to the hotel is included. Our partner hotel (4****) is located in a popular district and has a stunning 180° view on all the bay of Algiers. Dinner in a local restaurant 1 diner included

DAY 2 — ALGIERS THE WHITE CITY – CULTURAL & HISTORICAL

Guided tour of Algiers with a native. Visit of Kasbah (UNESCO World Heritage), Maqqam Shaheed, le Jardin d’essai. Afternoon in Tipaza (UNESCO World Heritage) Diner in a local restaurant 1 breakfast + 1 diner included

DAY 3 — JOURNEY TO BERBER LAND: KABILYA, THE MOUNTAINOUS REGION

DAY 4 — CONSTANTINE: “CITY OF BRIDGES”

Departure after the breakfast for Constantine (3 hours of road). Crossing Jijel’s region and the wonderful Mediterranean coast. Arrival at our partner hotel (4****), Visiting the Emir Abdelkader mosque. Diner in a local restaurant. Diner in a local restaurant. 1 breakfast + 1 diner included DAY 5 — ON THE ROAD TO SAHARA: STEP INTO THE ANCIENT ROMAN CITY OF TIMGAD

Departure to the ancient Roman city of Timgad. During the route, you will follow the Aurès Valley, the emblematic Algerian canyon. Visits of the ruins of Timgad (UNESCO World Heritage site). Departure at the end of the afternoon to the Sahara’s door: (2 hours 30 minutes of road). Arrival at our partner hotel (4****). DAY 6 — OASIS 1: ONE STEP IN BISKRA

Riwaya Travel exclusivity: you will visit a date palm groves of the famous Tolga village (15 minutes by bus from Biskra). The variety of Algerian dates is one of the best in the world. It is often compared to a candy. In the afternoon, there will also be a visit of the famous Oasis. The dinner will be served in a local restaurant.

DAY 7 — ARRIVAL TO EL OUED – “CITY OF A THOUSAND DOMES”

After the breakfast, you will visit Biskra. Then, you will visit the Sidi Okba mosque, the oldest place of worship in activity in Algeria (7th century after J-C). Departure of the famous oasis of El Oued (3 hours of road). The dinner is not included inside the Gazelle d’Or Hotel. 1 breakfast included

DAY 8 — EL OUED – ITS MAJESTY “LA GAZELLE D’OR” #1

DAY 10 — GHARDAÏA

After the breakfast, visit of the city. Have some rest into the hotel. Meeting with locals. The dinner will be served in a local restaurant. 1 breakfast + 1 diner included

DAY 11 — DEPARTURE TO BOU SAADA

Departure to Algiers and scale into Bou Saada region. Arrival at our hotel partner. Visiting the city and some old architectural mosques built by the Saharan culture. The dinner will be served in a local restaurant. 1 breakfast + 1 diner included

DAY 12 — BOU SAADA TO ALGIERS

After breakfast, departure to Algiers crossing regions like Djelfa and Bouira. We will have a picnic in the unbelievable and unknown place of Bordj Zemmoura. Arrival at our hotel partner The dinner will be served in a local restaurant. 1 breakfast + 1 diner included DAY 13 — LAST DAY IN ALGIERS

Last day of the journey in Algiers. This day will be organized according to the expected returns to the countries of origin. Visits into shopping markets and the 3rd world biggest mosque are possible. Transfers are included from the hotel to the airport.1 breakfast included

The program is subject to modification to incorporate dance lessons (Teacher Amel Tafsout) and meetings with local Algerian dancers.
