Kerry lngredients (Ireland) Ltd. is the Dairy and Food ingredients division of the plc, headquartered in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Within the division, Kerry lngredients (Ireland) Ltd. currently operate six processing plants, of which Kerry Ingredients- is the flagship plant and one of the original casein processing plants in Ireland.

The other plants are located in Charleville, UK and Continental Europe.

The Kerry lngredients Listowel activity comprises the main food ingredients plant located at Islandmacloughry, Listowel, Co. Kerry, along with a Waste Ash Disposal Site at Banemore and a Sludge Storage Facility at Causeway, both in North Kerry (Figure A.l .I-A).

The Listowel plant is located on the outskirts of Listowel on level ground between the N69, Tralee-Listowel national primary route and the River Feale (NGR 0989E, 1328N).

The Listowel installation comprises a manufacturing plant together with associated services, wastewater treatment plant, storage and car parking and covers an area of approximately 13.1 Ha. A further 10.06 Ha of land surrounding the site is also in Kerry lngredients ownership. This additional land is situated on adjoining land to the southwest and east of the site, and also to the northeast, on the opposite side of the River Feale (Drawing No. Al.2.A).

The Listowel plant has developed from a green field site since 1972 and is now the flagship dairy ingredients facility in the Kerry Group and one of the

largest in the country. For inspection purposes only. Consent of copyright owner required for any other use. The plant is situated within an area of North Kerry that is highly dependant on agriculture and milk processing and employs approximately 550 people.

Kerry lngredients manufactures milk products. The plant processes over 546,000m3 of milk per annum to produce a large range of dairy products, while a range of non-milk based specialist food and food ingredients are also produced.

In line with the seasonality of milk supply, the plant operates to peak production (24 hours a day, 7 days) generally between March and October. Production between November and February continues at a lower level of intensity.

The major products produced include butter, spreads, cheese, casein and whey derivatives. The plant is one of the largest processors of casein in Europe and is one of the largest single dairy processing sites in Ireland.

KII places significant emphasis on environmental aspects of the business and has committed significant expenditure to environmental protection measures. In addition, the company places considerable emphasis on identification of ways to reduce the potential for environmental impact and this is achieved

through the structured framework of an Environmental Management System. The plants quality management system implements the company policy on hygiene and quality control.

Kerry lngredients has achieved IS09002 Quality Management System certification in 1989 and IS09001/2000 for various processes at the Listowel site. The plant Environmental Management System (EMS) achieved certification to IS014001 in 1996.

The role of training as a central function in delivering product quality, process safety and environmental protection has been recognised by Kerry lngredients through the implementation of a training management system within the spreads department in accordance with the requirements of the Excellence Through People Standard, which is certified by FAS.

Process Description

The major products manufactured at Listowel include powders, butter, spreads, cheese, and whey derivatives. The dairy liquid process (whey) is largely based on separation technology. The main production departments are Casein, Powder and Yellow Fats (ButterEpreads). Processed cheese is made at a new cheese plant, which was constructed in 2000, replacing an older facility on the site.

Whole milk arrives at the plant in bulk road tankers. The milk is tested for acceptability before being filtered and pumped to one of eight bulk milk storage silos (273 m3 each). The milk is then separated to cream and skim milk by centrifugal separation. Both cream and skim milk are pasteurised, cooled and pumped to storage.

Cream is further processed to butter and butter oil. The majority of skim milk is processed in the Casein Plant, where the casein is separated from whey proteins. For inspection purposes only. Consent of copyright owner required for any other use.

The separated casein is washed prior to being dried and milled to a powder product. Both acid and rennet casein are processed at the Listowel plant.

The separated whey is further processed via membrane separation, demineralisation, evaporation and spray drying to produce a range of powdered products, including whey powders, milk and whey protein powders, and lactose powders.

Cheese powders are also spray dried at the plant.

The Kerry lngredients plant produced approximately 140,000 tonnes of dried product, butter, spreads and cheese in 2004.

Economic Contribution

Kerry lngredients is a significant employer in North Kerry, directly employing approximately 550 people. Using an accepted multiplier of 1:2, the plant would contribute to downstream employment of over 1,000 people in the transport and services supply sectors.

Management Structures

Kerry lngredients (Ireland) Ltd has a structured management approach to the operation of the business in terms of product quality, process control, environment, safety, training and analytical capability. Training of personnel is a key function in the successful operation of the plant.

Central to this structured approach is the quality management system, which provides the structured framework for operational and quality control at the plant. An environmental management system provides a similar structured framework for the maintenance and improvement in the plants environmental performance.

Both environmental and quality management systems are audited on an ongoing basis by a combination of internal audits and external certification surveillance audits.
