4 President’s Message
Warm Greetings to all Niagara Region Members!
Dear friends,
Signs of pending spring are beginning to show!
The planning meeting on Sunday February 17 was well attended and the weather did not get in the way this year.
As you know, the board did a member survey in late fall. We had a very good response rate, thank you!
We’re analyzing the data and beginning to use the feedback to improve the club experience.
Our first step was to change the format of the planning meeting to have members respond to 3 areas of opportunity highlighted in the survey.
Members brain stormed ideas for 1) New unique event ideas 2) Increasing new member & existing member engagement 3) New ideas for engaging monthly meetings.
Many great ideas were generated and will be considered. Stay tuned for updates soon.
A huge thank you to Tom Richardson and his company for their professional development and analysis of the survey!
Hopefully the cars stored for the winter season will be coming out soon. There are many great events already on the website calendar.
I hope to see at an event soon.

To Region Officers:
Recently, there have been incidents reported to us regarding scammers reaching out to PCA members and region officers. We have seen two types lately:
1. The scammers have posed as a region officer who sends an email to a fellow region of- ficer requesting the person to buy gift cards on their behalf, send a photo of all the card details, and say they’ll repay it later. 2. In other situations, the scammers have contacted a member who has a classified ad posted on the region website. The scammers pose as a potential buyer or say they have a potential business offer. When the member responds, the scammer says they’d like to send money to the member’s PayPal account for something (like importing a car) and they’ll give the member a percentage.
To avoid being a victim of these scams, there are actions you can take:
Please be sure to verify the authenticity of all requests for money. Call or text your fel- low officer, or send a separate email to verify the request. Do not list region or national email addresses in your website. Instead, provide a “Contact Us” type of interface on your website that allows members/guests to contact you via a web form that does not reveal your direct email address. If you use a custom domain for your website and email addresses, work with your do- main registrar to implement spam filtering on inbound emails. Consider limiting your Classifieds to members-only for contacting a seller. Communicate tips and cautions to your region members or those who post classified ads.
10
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Scammers are always changing tactics, but we will include two examples below so you can see what the messages look like.
First example:
This email was sent to a volunteer’s email alias address (which forwards to his per- sonal address) listed on region website from someone posing as Region President.
I need a favor from you right now.I am tied up at the moment, need you to purchase iTunes gift cards 3 pieces $100 each? I would repay you when i am through.
Once you get it,I need you to scratch the back of the card to reveal the pin, then take a snap shot of the back showing the pin and have them sent to me to make it less de- manding,I would have loved to call you however can't get to call right now with my line.
Second example:
This was in response to a classified ad on a region website.
Message:
Hello
Sorry i am not buying anything , but i have a good business offer for you that will fetch you some money, let me know if you are interested
Regards
Member responded: OK, I’ll bite - what’s your business opportunity?
Thanks for the message, i am into import and export of motor engine and parts etc, one of my customer want to send some Money to my PayPal account for engine i just delivered to him but my PayPal cannot receive big money due to limit attached to it.
Please can you receive the payment with your PayPal account? i will give you 20 percent of the total money, let me know if we can work together thanks
Regards Gavin
11 From The Prior Editor
Hello All,
For the past three years I had the great pleasure of being the editor of Flatout for the Niagara Region PCA. From the first newsletter to my last newsletter in December 2018 it has been an ever-growing experience. I have taken great pride in trying to make it more interesting and joyful to read. Over the years more members have taken time out of their busy schedules to give back to our club by contributing pictures and articles to make Flatout more interesting for everyone. Many have submitted arti- cles on restorations, engine rebuilds, building race cars, etc. they have shared their experiences with others by writing about clubs’ events. So, I would like to thank all of you for helping me make Flatout what it is to- day. I especially want to thank Rich, Tom, Johan, Hank, Judith, Sue, Dave and lovely wife Renee for all their insight in helping make Flatout bigger and better. One of the greatest joys of all is submitting our newsletter to the National Newsletter Chair, Barbara Coplen for the annual Newsletter contest. Each year I have submitted two editions for this event. It is here where you learn the most on what it takes to continually improve and pro- duce the best product you can. Now Fuat Yucel is the new editor stepping in, taking the reins and getting ready to take Flatout further. Give Fuat your support, reach out to him with your ideas, new articles, etc. Help him take Flatout where it has never been before. Thanks Dan

Hello All,
o glad to take over the edition of the Flatout. S That’s a lot of responsibility but also lots of visibility. I believe that’s a good continuation of the Social Media chair role I am helping with in the club. The club members are awesome: they put people first and then comes cars. I’m very proud to be part of the club for this reason. 2019 started very efficiently with the pre-planning meeting and we are expecting to hit lots of scores. This will be a great year, I’m convinced. That would be only possible thanks to all of us. The events forms so far filled are promising and we expect to have plenty of activities. From simple format to complex format they are all valuable. They will call for many attendees hopefully. Every- body is searching for something and they’ll found a Waooo moment. Come in and bring in more friends: we love Porsche and other cars like you!!!

NRPCA Member Badges: If you are one of our newer members, or if you never attended an event during which we gave out badges, you can now order one for yourself or your family member. They are double-sided with the current NRPCA logo and your name, plus a lan- yard. We collect names of folks who would like a badge. Once we hit at least 8 badges, an order will be placed. The club covers the cost. Badg- es are available for pick up at our monthly meetings. Additional badges and/or replacement badges can be ordered at cost. Cost per badge is $8.50. Please contact Secretary if you are interested.

16 17 Niagara Region Planning Meeting The official start of the 2019 Season
hat a great organization! The participation was good for this year Niagara Region season kick. Wew already know how much we have as events, thanks to the forms so far received. Nice job for all the persons who posted these promising ideas.
The meeting started with a nice table so the attendees could make their own sandwiches, all along with many choices and completed with two types of potages, Drinks and cookie desserts were also proposed. Then we had per table, a working session in order to propose ideas, The three questions were coming from the survey some of the PCA Niagara Region replied.
18 tudious members proposing ideas about the three following topics: S 1. Fresh event ideas that we have not done before that would bring excitement to both current and new members and that you would be willing to assist with. 2. Discuss ideas on how to more actively engage newer members and keep established members active. 3. Envision engaging formats for our monthly member meetings with a focus on membership involvement and enjoyment. How do we make our monthly meetings make more members want to come out?

21 Watkins Glen Drivers Walk of Fame By Tom Lyons
am pleased to be able to share the following information with NRPCA members. I One of our own, Fran McAllister, is being honored with a plaque on the Watkins Glen Drivers Walk of Fame. As you’ll see from the drivers list below (updated 9/19/16) he is in some pretty lofty company with the best drivers in the world, across many disciplines having been awarded this honor. In addition to winning races at the Glen he is also the holder of a few short track records. He earned his wins and short track records while driving his Porsche Speedster. Look for Fran’s plaque in front of Baskins Robins ice cream shop…. Fun fact: Fran is a founding member of our region.
Dick Wylman and Fran McAllister
Some of Fran’s accomplishments over the years include: Racing on 12 different tracks Driven 14 different race cars Built 0ver 35 race engines Set two short course records at WGI Won several NYS Championships Driven over 250,000 preparing and racing cars Over 33,00 hours spent working on and racing cars
Victory lap at Nelsons Ledges
22 The following was provided by the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) The Watkins Glen Drivers Walk of Fame was established in 1993 by the Watkins Glen Historic Racing Com- mittee with support from the Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce and Watkins Glen International to honor retired drivers who have competed on the Glen’s world-famous circuit since 1948. The Historic Racing Committee is now a committee of the International Motor Racing Research Center. Center staff help develop the inscription for the Walk of Fame markers. The majori- ty of markers are located in the east and west sidewalks along Franklin Street. All the markers in the Walk of Fame are sponsored by private dona- tions. To be considered for induction into the Walk of Fame, the driver must have driven a race car in competition at one of the four race courses used at the Glen since 1948 and be retired from racing. The first person inducted into the Walk of Fame was the gentle- man whose vision it was to bring rac- ing to Watkins Glen, Cameron Ar- getsinger. His block was placed in the Drivers Walk of Fame at the original racing start-finish line in front of the Schuyler County Court House in 1993. Each September the Watkins Glen His- toric Racing Committee adds from three to six new drivers to the Walk of WGI Lap Record 1977 Fame, inducting them at the annual Grand Prix Festival the first Friday after Labor Day. A tour of the Drivers Walk of Fame is a walk through rac- ing history. It is at the Glen that road racing had its re- birth in 1948, and since that time it has been known as the Home of Road Racing in America. The Walk of Fame in front of the Court House is reserved for those drivers who competed from those early street races, from 1948 to 1952. Begin your tour at Smalley’s Gar- age at 204 S. Franklin St., where race cars had to pass inspection before being allowed to compete. Proceed north to the Court House and follow the path almost to Seneca Lake before crossing Franklin Street and enjoy- ing the names on the west side. A few drivers are hon- ored with markers at the Racing Research Center at 610 S. Decatur St.

25 1958 Porsche Restoration By Jim Hohensee
It has been a while since my last progress report on my 356. I have been making progress since the last article in the March 2018 newsletter. The last time I had the car ready for its maid- en voyage and then the snow and salt hit the roads. On Feb 2018 we had a warm week with some heavy rain to wash away the salt and dry roads. Perfect test drive weather! I started making larger cir- cles away from the shop and felt confident enough to go for a NYS inspection. After putting about 20 miles on the car I cele- brated with a beer (actually more than one). The little car felt great and even with careful break in driv- ing the engine seemed very strong. This was the first time in over 50 years this car has moved under its own power! During the Sum- mer of 2018 I put about 200 miles on the car and had some worrying noises, but after a couple valve adjustments and oil change things seem to be fine.
The Winter project has been to concentrate on the interi- or starting with new door panels and headliner. I tried to install a headliner in a VW square back about 40 years ago and swore I would never do one again. Time has al- tered my bravery or determi- nation, so I decided to give it a try.
26
First step was to remove all the glass because this style headliner gets glued to the metal lip that holds the glass in. The factory work shop manual shows the gluing of fabric onto all the surfaces that the headliner gets attached to.
None of the professional upholsterers that I talked to ever do this and did not know what purpose it serves. Every 356 and early 911 that I have worked on has had this material, so I decided to "follow the book". I had a large roll of muslin cloth that was left in the building by the previous owner so that made the deci- sion even easier.
Next, I decided to start with the part of the headliner that gets attached to the movable sunroof panel. I figured that if I could not do this flat rectangular panel I had better stop right there.
27
Well that went well, so on I go. Next the test fit which needs to be done is holding the headliner in with metal binder clips. The sunroof coupe is dif- ferent from other coupes in that it does not have any metal support bows to hold it up. You have to get brave and start to cut a bigger and bigger hole where the sunroof open- ing is so that you can clip it in place.
Usually you would start to glue and stretch starting at the front and rear, but I decided to start at the sunroof opening and work out. This seemed to work well, and I think the results turned out very good. Next step will be the dash pad, carpets, and upholstery. I have decided to leave these opera- tions to the professionals and that will be for the next newsletter.
Happy Trails! Jim

Remembering Lou Betstadt
Lou Betstadt passed suddenly last November. Within a month of being informed he had stage 4-pancreatic cancer he was gone. He was 70 years old. We celebrated his birthday in June! Except for some back pain experienced in October he felt just fine. In fact, Lou raced in a PCA Club Race at Summit Point in early October and won the hour and a half Enduro in the rain! Physically he felt great after what had to have been a very demanding race.
I miss Lou, every day. He was a great friend in the truest sense. His friendship was lasting and sincere. Many folks have experienced Lou’s friendship. He was always interested in how you were and what you were up to. He would routinely call just to find out how you and your family were doing. If he knew you had an issue he would call every day for an update. Need help, he was right there.
Family was the center of Lou’s world and it revolved around his wife Linda and daughters Sarah and Molly. Later it would include grandchildren Charlotte, Simon and Margot. How he adored his grandchildren, a fact he never let you forget! But, it was always Linda who was the absolute love of his life. From the first date at Brockport when he picked her up in his Alfa Romeo, with a door handle that kept falling off, he was smitten. The girl from Buffalo and the boy from New York City formed quite a relationship, raised a beautiful family, had very successful careers and established and maintained lasting friendships.
Lou had an insatiable love of cars. He thought he got the disease from his father. He devoured car magazines and was an encyclopedia (remember them?) of information about almost any make of car. I don’t think Lou ever met a car he did not like but his first love was Porsches, his first one being a late model white Carrera he bought new. It did not take him long to find the Niagara Porsche Club and sign up for the Driver Education program at Watkins Glen. He was hooked..big time! Within a couple of years his beautiful white Carrera was stripped of it’s interior and became Lou’s racecar. His first race was in 1998 at the 50/50 at the Glen. A big time event and he finished 4th in the GT3 category! An auspicious start and harbinger of things to come.
After his first race Lou’s world revolved around family, clients, friends and RACING. Lou started competing in Porsche Club Racing and actively campaigned up through 2018. He was quite successful and in 2013 won the F Class National Championship. That was quite an accomplishment driving a 25-year-old car (designed in 1962!) competing against newer Porsche cars with far more sophisticated suspensions and newer power plants. For 2018 he finished third in championship points in class F.

At the races everyone knew Lou. He would make his rounds talking to competitors and finding out how they were. If a competitor needed a part or assistance Lou was always ready to help. I think he had another complete car in piec- es in his trailer and remarkably he knew where everything was! However, on-track it was a different story. Lou wanted to win, I mean really, really wanted to win. On track, he gave no quarter. Look out, I’m coming through!
While Lou had a passion for racing he also loved to share that passion with other drivers. Early on he became an on- track Driving Instructor for Niagara and other clubs. His students recognized and appreciated the quality of his in- struction and commitment to their success. He was a great communicator. Because of the quality of Lou’s instruc- tion he was tapped to participate as a founding member of the Niagara Region Instructor Development Program. In that role he was instrumental in the training and mentoring new instructor candidates.
Niagara’s spring 2019 Driving Event scheduled for May 27-28 has been named the Lou Betstadt Memorial High Per- formance Driving Event. He was actively involved in our Driver Education program since 1988…student, instructor, instructor mentor and good will ambassador for the club. It is a fitting tribute. Friends of Lou’s are invited to come down on the 27th to be part of the first day of the event. The day will conclude with a tour of the track with stop- ping points along the way to visit and reminisce at some of Lou’s favorite corners.
