Dear friends, Signs of pending spring are beginning to show! The planning meeting on Sunday February 17 was well attended and the weather did not get in the way this year. As you know, the board did a member survey in late fall. We had a very good response rate, thank you! We’re analyzing the data and beginning to use the feedback to improve the club experience. Our first step was to change the format of the planning meeting to have members respond to 3 areas of opportunity highlighted in the survey. Members brain stormed ideas for 1) New unique event ideas 2) Increasing new member & existing member engagement 3) New ideas for engaging monthly meetings. Many great ideas were generated and will be considered. Stay tuned for updates soon. A huge thank you to Tom Richardson and his company for their professional development and analysis of the survey! Hopefully the cars stored for the winter season will be coming out soon. There are many great events already on the website calendar. I hope to see at an event soon. We have seen two types lately: 1. The scammers have posed as a region officer who sends an email to a fellow region of- ficer requesting the person to buy gift cards on their behalf, send a photo of all the card details, and say they’ll repay it later. 2. In other situations, the scammers have contacted a member who has a classified ad posted on the region website. The scammers pose as a potential buyer or say they have a potential business offer. When the member responds, the scammer says they’d like to send money to the member’s PayPal account for something (like importing a car) and they’ll give the member a percentage. To avoid being a victim of these scams, there are actions you can take: Please be sure to verify the authenticity of all requests for money. Call or text your fel- low officer, or send a separate email to verify the request. Do not list region or national email addresses in your website. Instead, provide a “Contact Us” type of interface on your website that allows members/guests to contact you via a web form that does not reveal your direct email address. If you use a custom domain for your website and email addresses, work with your do- main registrar to implement spam filtering on inbound emails. Consider limiting your Classifieds to members-only for contacting a seller. Communicate tips and cautions to your region members or those who post classified ads. 10 Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Scammers are always changing tactics, but we will include two examples below so you can see what the messages look like. First example: This email was sent to a volunteer’s email alias address (which forwards to his per- sonal address) listed on region website from someone posing as Region President. I need a favor from you right now.I am tied up at the moment, need you to purchase iTunes gift cards 3 pieces $100 each? I would repay you when i am through. Once you get it,I need you to scratch the back of the card to reveal the pin, then take a snap shot of the back showing the pin and have them sent to me to make it less de- manding,I would have loved to call you however can't get to call right now with my line. Second example: This was in response to a classified ad on a region website. Message: Hello Sorry i am not buying anything , but i have a good business offer for you that will fetch you some money, let me know if you are interested Regards Member responded: OK, I’ll bite - what’s your business opportunity? Thanks for the message, i am into import and export of motor engine and parts etc, one of my customer want to send some Money to my PayPal account for engine i just delivered to him but my PayPal cannot receive big money due to limit attached to it. Please can you receive the payment with your PayPal account? i will give you 20 percent of the total money, let me know if we can work together thanks Regards Gavin 11 From The Prior Editor Hello All, For the past three years I had the great pleasure of being the editor of Flatout for the Niagara Region PCA. From the first newsletter to my last newsletter in December 2018 it has been an ever-growing experience. I have taken great pride in trying to make it more interesting and joyful to read. Over the years more members have taken time out of their busy schedules to give back to our club by contributing pictures and articles to make Flatout more interesting for everyone. Many have submitted arti- cles on restorations, engine rebuilds, building race cars, etc. they have shared their experiences with others by writing about clubs’ events. So, I would like to thank all of you for helping me make Flatout what it is to- day. I especially want to thank Rich, Tom, Johan, Hank, Judith, Sue, Dave and lovely wife Renee for all their insight in helping make Flatout bigger and better. One of the greatest joys of all is submitting our newsletter to the National Newsletter Chair, Barbara Coplen for the annual Newsletter contest. Each year I have submitted two editions for this event. It is here where you learn the most on what it takes to continually improve and pro- duce the best product you can. Now Fuat Yucel is the new editor stepping in, taking the reins and getting ready to take Flatout further. Give Fuat your support, reach out to him with your ideas, new articles, etc. Help him take Flatout where it has never been before. • First Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours Story by Michael T
August 29th, 2007 First Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours Story by Michael T. Lynch A Free Event at Monterey With prices for some events now at $200 per person, Monterey Peninsula’s week of automotive festivities is sometimes out of reach for many enthusiasts. We report here on two events that are free to the public, but make no compromise in presenting some of the finest examples of automotive design and engineering seen during the week. At 11:00 AM on a clear Tuesday morning, during a run of the best weather ever seen during the Monterey Peninsula’s legendary annual festival of the automobile, a new star was born. As crowds stood amidst the distinctive architecture and towering pines shadowing Carmel’s Ocean Avenue shops, restaurants and galleries, Daniel Rodriguez, the retired New York policeman who inspired the country after the September 11 attacks, took the stage. His flawless rendition of the Star Spangled Banner officially opened the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue and was followed by a flyover of three L-39 jets. The Bernardus hors d'ouvres await the crowd at the Monday night Carmel Concours entrants' and VIP party at the Carmel Plaza. Credit: Gary Geiger When the stunned crowd again lowered their eyes to the street, 130 landmark automobiles produced during the almost unbroken 25 years of prosperity following World War II surrounded them. Cars present were associated with names from automotive history like Carroll Shelby, Jim Hall, Augie Pabst, A.J. Foyt, Bob Bondurant, Briggs Cunningham, Phil Walters and John Fitch, and one Cadillac carried Ike and Mamie Eisenhower to Ike’s first presidential inauguration.

The 6.6-mile chain ran through the streets of the village, starting and ending in front of Schuyler County Court House. Permits from six government agencies are required for the closure of public roads for this event; State, County, Village, Reading, Dix and the New York State Parks Commission. It was also necessary to have permission from the New York Central Railroad to stop the trains during the race as the course crossed the tracks. The track was used for races from 1948 to 1952. Unchanged, it could be toured today as a public road. For those who were here in the early days, it is a sentimental journey. For those who have never been here, this is a lesson in the history of motorsport. The attractions listed below are also on our map of the original circuit.

  • NEWSLETTER Vol 38 #6 October 2020
NEWSLETTER Vol 38 #6 October 2020 The late great Sherm Decker The fastest MG racer ever? Our cover headline last month was sure a fizzle. The Lime Rock MGVR Focus race was cancelled. It was not the MGVR race but the fact the weekend was shared with the TransAm series. The State of CT ruling for quarantine would not have allowed dozens of crew and drivers from other States to participate – so the event went down. No MGVR focus race for 2020 – maybe 2 for 2021? In This Issue Sherm Decker was the superstar of MGA racers. Back when the SCCA classified cars by displacement, the poor 1500cc MGA raced against the 1500cc 4 cam Porsche Carrera’s. But Decker humbled them more than once. A tribute story about Sherm written by the journalist Edward Vendyk and courtesy of Safety Fast Magazine. Alix Lafontant was The Photographer at Watkins Glen in the 50’s & 60’s. He took that expertise to tracks around the world. A great story about this unusual career in photo journalism. A fair amount of items For Sale. Those “things” you have in your garage or barn or storage could be just what somebody out there needs badly. Feel free to use this forum for cars, parts, publications, posters or whatever. No letters to the editor, shame on you. No tales of MG’s past and the great times you had, shame on you. SHERMAN DECKER By Edward Vandyk When I became aware that one of Sherman Decker’s Twin North American contacts including Dave Nicholas, Ted Rounds, MGA! Editor Cams had recently been restored in the UK I thought this was Mike Tooke, Michael Eaton along with details from ‘Call it MGA’, courtesy of something that would be of interest to the MG community and, Roger Martin and the MG Car Club MGA with the help of the owner, I set about writing an article both Register, I hope what follows gives an overview of Sherman Decker and his about Sherman Decker and his MGAs.

  • PRIMITIVE ART by Steve White
PRIMITIVE ART By Steve White How’s this for an idea? Take a lightweight British roadster and fit it with a big American V8. Oh, you’ve heard that one before? But, while you’re probably thinking of the Shelby Cobra of the 60s, I’m thinking of the car that proved the concept more than a decade earlier: The Allard. Sidney Allard started his Ford dealership in London before the war. Not satisfied just selling cars, Sidney wanted to build and race them. At his small factory in Clapham, using readily available Ford chassis and driveline components, he built several and personally drove some in competition. After the war, Sidney wanted to expand his idea with cars that held commercial promise. But raw materials like steel and aluminum were rationed by the government, which favored the export products so badly needed by the war-torn economy. So, Allard set his sights on the U.S. and its exploding interest in sports cars and road racing. And he got his raw materials! Like before the war, Allard made maximum use of the Ford parts bin, pre-1949, that is. He improvised a clever front swing axle by splitting and hinging the Ford I-beam unit in the center. The rear end was the old banjo-type differential housing, adapted to employ inboard brakes and de Dion suspension with coil springs; some cars were equipped with quick-change units. The steel ladder frames were simple and lightweight as were the aluminum roadster bodies. What I’m describing is the J2 model, which appeared in 1950 and updated about two years later by the J2X.
