  • Nesen I. the Horse in the Wedding Ritual of Central Polissia. Несен
ВИПУСК № 14 Irina NESEN Kyiv THE HORSE IN THE WEDDING RITUAL OF CENTRAL POLISSIA The wedding ritual as a complicated and developed system conceals various symbols and plots associated with them, which are represented by some characters. Sometimes they are animals reflecting different surrounding objects and phenomena. Such phenomenon forms a special zoological code1. In old times animals were objects of the cult (zoolatry). But this phenomenon is not always connected with totemism2. Horse occupies a prominent place among such animals and it is one of the oldest cultural symbols. But its role in the wedding ceremony is not examined enough because of the lack of the source base. A chief aim of the article is to distinguish horse role and place in Central Polissia wedding ritual. The research is based on the field materials gathered by the author on the region territory during the expedition, exactly in 30 villages of Emilchyns’kyi, Luhyns’kyi, Malyns’kyi, Narodyts’kyi, Ovryts’kyi, Olevs’kyi districts (Zhytomyr region), Ivankivs’kyi, Polis’kyi, Chornobyl’skyi districts (Kyiv region), Rokytnivs’kyi district (Rivne region), Iziaslavs’kyi district (Khmelnytsk region). In the world’s mythology the horse is always associated with the male deities – patrons of different worlds. Very often it is an inhabitant of the upper world air and in this meaning it possesses some birds features and is a zoomorphic deity or a helper at the last3. Among the Indo-Europeans horse is not only an assistant of the god of fire Agni, but a cosmic animal, whose parts are associated with the main parts of our Universe4.

On behalf of Holy Family Parish, we want to congratulate you on your decision to begin preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage. It is an important and exciting time in your lives and is important for our parish community as well. You have asked to celebrate a Sacrament of the Church, to publicly profess that your marriage is a sign of the love that God has for all people. This will place a special responsibility upon you to take seriously not only your marriage preparation but also the living out of your basic Christian commitment. It also places a responsibility on us to help and support you the best we can so that your life as a married couple is long and fruitful. The information in this booklet is only a guide. One of the most important contacts you will have with the parish will be the priest or deacon who will lead your preparation for the Sacrament of Marriage and preside at your wedding. On the Holy Family Parish Marriage webpage at http://www.holyfamilystow.org/Marriage there is a helpful Marriage Preparation Checklist that will help you through the preparation process. Please accept our welcome and our congratulations! • The Nicholas Gesner Diary
The nicholas gesner Diary Volume 1 1829-1834 Transcribed and edited by Alice Gerard © Alice Gerard, 2015 PO Box 225 Palisades NY 10964 ISBN 978-0-9743865-1-5 forewOrd This book is dedicated to my mother Alice Haagensen, with many thanks to everyone who helped with her gargantuan effort to transcribe theNicholas Gesner Diary. The publication of the book was made possible by the work done between 1958 and 2000 by Alice Haagensen and the many friends and relatives she per- suaded to help her decipher Nicholas Gesner’s crabbed handwriting. They had actually transcribed the first 400 pages, some typed and more handwritten, although none of it was on the computer. Among them were Caroline Tapley, Tina Kister, Mildred Rippey, Judy Friedlander, and myself; there may have been others. Other people helped. Piermont Librarian Grace Mitchell assisted me in researching the history of Pier- mont. Marianne Leese of the Rockland County Historical Society provided me with maps. I relied heavily on the publications of Winthrop Gilman and Reginald McMahon for information about the people who lived in Nicholas’s neighborhood during the time he kept the diary. Herb Kellogg, who lived in the dwelling that Nicholas built in 1793, showed me over the house so I could get an idea about the living spaces. Formatting the diary was a complicated process. Alice Haagensen had hoped to publish it with a graphic of each one of Nicholas’s pages opposite each transcription. This would have required a series of 8 volumes, 400 pages each, so I abandoned the idea.

  • The Siamese Twins, the Bunker Family, and Nineteenth-Century U.S
American Family, Oriental Curiosity: The Siamese Twins, the Bunker Family, and Nineteenth-Century U.S. Society Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Joseph Andrew Orser Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Judy Tzu-Chun Wu, Adviser John Brooke Alan Gallay Copyright by Joseph Andrew Orser 2010 Abstract This dissertation examines the cultural and social spaces that conjoined brothers Chang and Eng Bunker occupied, interrogating the insights their lives offer into nineteenth-century ideas of race, class, gender, and respectability. Chang and Eng were conjoined twins of Chinese descent whose stage name, the Siamese Twins, derived from the country of their birth. The brothers toured the United States as “Oriental” curiosities from 1829 to 1839, and then settled in North Carolina as farmers, becoming slaveholders, marrying white sisters, and eventually fathering twenty-one children between them. In 1849, the twins returned to touring, this time taking two daughters along with them; until their deaths in 1874, Chang and Eng exhibited themselves and their offspring, touring as the Siamese Twins and Children. Through promotional literature, personal correspondence, visual images and newspaper reports, this work traces the evolution of public discourse about the twins and their families, contributing to other considerations of the twins and the course of American Orientalism. This dissertation goes further, however, by introducing early Asian Americans to considerations of the turbulent terrain of class and respectability in the 1830s and 1840s; the increasingly divisive debates over slavery, nativism, and sectionalism; and the tensions of national reunion in the years following the Civil War.
