2 Game Storm 8 Musings From the Chair

This past year has been a fun and exciting challenge. My goal this year was to make Game Storm bigger and better than previous years. I hope we have accomplished this.

We have a great Guest of Honor in Richard Garfield. I look forward to his visit to Portland.

I would like to thank the committee for the many hours of work it took to make the convention happen. I feel blessed to be working with all of you. This convention could not have happened without each and every one of you.

Note: Remember, this convention is run on volunteer power, and we can use all the help we can get.

Aaron Nabil Chair, Game Storm 8

Richard Garfield (born 1966) is a game designer who created the card games Magic: The Gathering, Netrunner, BattleTech, Vampire: The Eternal Struggle (originally known as 'Jyhad'), The Great Dalmuti, Star Wars Trading Card Game, and the board game Robo Rally. Magic: The Gathering is his most successful game and its development is credited with creating the genre.

Garfield designed his first game as a teenager. He had a wide range of interests, including math and language. In 1985, he received a bachelor of science degree in computer mathematics. He joined Bell Laboratories and worked there for a couple of years, but then decided to continue his education by attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He began designing a game called Magic: the Gathering as a student in the late 1980s. An "East Coast" group of playtesters, comprised mostly of fellow Penn students, formed around the developing game. While searching for a publisher for RoboRally, he found Peter Adkison of newly founded . Adkison agreed to publish his board game and expressed an interest in a game like Magic that would have little setup and short games.

Garfield studied under Herbert Wilf and earned a Ph.D. in combinatorial mathematics from Penn in 1993. Richard believed that would not offer a steady living and became a professor of mathematics at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. He had previously been in contact with Magic playtesters from the west coast and his move brought him closer to them and Wizards of the Coast.

Magic: The Gathering became incredibly popular after its commercial launch in 1993. Garfield left academics to join Wizards of the Coast as a full-time game designer in June 1994.

Garfield was also a primary play tester for the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition bookset. He still sporadically contributes to Magic: The Gathering, most recently (as of 2005) as part of the design team for the 2005 expansion, Ravnica: City of Guilds. 7 Game Storm 8 Other Industry Guests

Andy Collins

After starting in the Organized Play department on April 1st, 1996, Andy Collins moved over to Wizards of the Coast's Roleplaying R&D in 1998. There, he worked first as an editor on Alternity and D&D products, and then as a designer for Alternity, D&D and the Star Wars RPG, until settling down into his current gig as a developer for D&D products. His long list of development credits includes Magic of Incarnum, Weapons of Legacy, Magic of Eberron, and Complete Adventurer. He also served as the lead for the D&D version 3.5 revision team.

Andy is happily married to RPG designer (and fellow gaming enthusiast) Gwendolyn F.M. Kestrel. (For their wedding reception, the couple threw a three- day game convention in their home for dozens of friends.) He's been playing D&D since 1981, and currently participates in four or five ongoing campaigns--it's hard to keep track sometimes. When he's not working, gaming, or watching TV, he occasionally updates his website: www.andycollins.net.

Gwendolyn Kestrel

Gwendolyn F.M. Kestrel delights in her current career as a game designer, working primarily on D&D products. Current releases include Races of the Dragon and Fane of the Drow. Her varied past lives in the gaming industry include RPG freelancer on products such as d20 Past and Monster Manual III, RPG editor of Oriental Adventures and the Epic Level Handbook, and the events manager of both Origins and GenCon.

Gwendolyn's non-work activities also focus on gaming. She's involved in several D&D campaigns that meet monthly or every other week. Several evenings a week, she plays City of Heroes MMORPG with her husband Andy Collins and other friends from work. In addition, she enjoys boardgames including Carcassone and Puerto Rico, card games including Wizard and Lost Cities, and party games such as Times Up and werewolf.

Chris Lindsay

Born in sunny California, Christopher Lindsay moved to the Northwest early in his life and has lived there ever since. Having lived in Oregon, Alaska, and now Washington, he has nearly forgotten what that great yellow orb in the sky is actually called. Currently, Christopher lives in not-so-sunny Renton, Washington. During the day, Christopher is a dutiful Wizards of the Coast employee. In the evenings he plots the destruction of Dungeons & Dragons characters everywhere. He is looking forward to the upcoming release of Complete Psionic, his first project with Wizards of the Coast. 8 Game Storm 8

Stephen Radney-MacFarland

Born on Christmas day in Washington D.C. during the Nixon administration, the stars were definitely wrong when Stephen Radney-MacFarland came screaming into the world. Since then he's thrived on wasting his life on trivial things. After years of aimlessly wandering the U.S., he settled in Seattle to bilk start-up dot- coms. When that bubble burst, he jumped ship to Wizards of the Coast, where he¹s worked on Dungeons & Dragons Organized Play since a week after the launch of 3rd edition. A roleplaying and miniatures enthusiast, Stephen plays as much D&D (in roleplaying, miniatures, or even Three-Dragon Ante form) as he can, while enjoying the occasional game of Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Warhammer, or Blood Bowl. He also enjoys the vanishing art of painting miniatures, and some even say he's good at it.

Contrary to his typical ne'er-do-well ways, Stephen is married to a beautiful young lady named Sky. They live a surprisingly mundane existence on the shores of Lake Washington.

Mike Selinker

Mike Selinker is a game designer whose design credits include Pirates of the Spanish Main and Fightball with James Ernest, Axis & Allies Revised with Larry Harris, the Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game, and Risk Godstorm. He was a creative director for the 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons and the Harry Potter Trading Card Game. As a puzzle maker, he created the fictional police officer Lt. Nodumbo for GAMES World of Puzzles. He is a founder of the Lone Shark Games design studio with James Ernest, LIVE/WIRE with Tim Beach, and the Maze of Games with Teeuwynn Woodruff. He also writes poker books such as Dealer's Choice: The Complete Handbook of Saturday Night Poker, with James Ernest and .

Mike Selinker won three 2005 Origins Awards for Pirates, Axis & Allies D-Day, and Betrayal at House on the Hill. His game Alpha Blitz was Games Magazine's 1998 Word Game of the Year.

Dave Howell

Dave Howell was Employee #7 at Wizards of the Coast, holding down positions as Production Manager, creator and head of the online customer support team (as Cyberspace Liaison [email protected]), founder of the book publishing division, and internal playtester for Magic, Jyhad/VTES, Great Dalmuti, Everway, and various other games. He also co-wrote & co-edited the company’s first product, The Primal Order, and the last book in the series, The Planes of Possibility. He reluctantly takes credit for giving James Ernest his first game-industry job, which might be why Dave now moonlights as a Cheapass Guinea Pig when he’s not working at the Seattle Book Company, the company he founded when he left Wizards 9 Game Storm 8

KC Kumphrey

KC Humphrey is Chief Designer and co-founder of Sunriver Games with Chris Brooks and Rita Humphrey. His latest published game is Havoc, The Hundred Years War, available at Funagain.com .

KC has been a boardgamer most of his life. He started playing Magic the Gathering just before Ice Age came out and was introduced to German board gaming through Settlers of Catan. He joined Rip City Gamers, a Portland, Oregon games play group, in 2001. KC began designing games with an entry in Abstract Games Magazine’s game contest in 2002. Acorn made the finals of the competition.

In addition to gaming, KC writes and performs music for guitar, mandolin, and piano. He produced a record album in 1975, and a songbook in 1978. The Humphreys are members of Sunnyside Foursquare Church where KC plays with the worship team.

Marcus Evenstar

Our Fan Guest for 2006, Marcus Evenstar is a successful house-husband, experienced curmudgeon, and long-term volunteer for conventions of many sorts. As Northwest Regional Director for the Men In Black of Steve Jackson Games, his public duties focus on promoting genial gameplay and advancement of the protocols. 12 Game Storm 8 How to Sign Up to Play a Game at Game Storm

First, find out which room your event is in. CC is the Centennial Center, which is the separate building to the North. AD and QD are the Deck Rooms, to the left as you enter the ballroom; ER and WR, East and West River, are to the right. The Board Room is off the glassed hallway leading to the restaurant. Gull’s Nest and Quayside are to the South of the lobby, in front of you as you walk in the main door.

Second, find the sign up sheet for your event. For games other than LARPs, sign up sheets for events are in the hallway outside the room in question, or just inside the room. They are set up in a grid, with one row for each table and a column for each hour. Find your table on the left and your day and time on the top, then find their intersection to find your sign up sheet.

Third, put your badge number in the first empty slot. If a game you want to play is full, sign up as an alternate. This gives you priority in case one of the initial players who signed up does not show. If you signed up online, your badge number should be listed at the top.

Five to ten minutes before the game starts, the Game Master who is running your event will take the sheet off the wall. Be ready to show him or her your badge to confirm your space.

You may sign up for LARPs in the Quayside room at any time.

Many games fill up, so be sure to sign up early! If you have any questions about the game sign up system, go to the Office in the Poolside Room, or the Game Library in the Centennial Center.

How to Use the Game Library

Game Storm has a huge stock of games available for you to check out and play. Not coincidentally, you are surrounded by other gamers on all sides. Come on down to the Game Library and get in the game!

The Game Library is located in the Centennial Center. You can view the shelves (from your side of the table, please) or read the alphabetical list of games available. When you have decided on a game, enter the game name, your name, your badge number and the day and time on the check out sheet. The helpful volunteer behind the table will verify your badge and give you the game. Then, find a table and play! There are some open gaming tables in the Center. Also, any table that does not have anything scheduled or is otherwise occupied is open gaming. Any scheduled event owns the table during their scheduled hours.

When you are done, return the game to the Library. The helpful volunteer will mark the time and initial that you returned it. That's it! Just be sure you return it before the Library closes at 7pm Sunday, or our Agents will come looking for you… 13 Game Storm 8 Board and Card Games 1846 Sat 6 PM-10 PM Dave Blanchard Table CC 16 Teen (13+) Average New Players OK Railroad building west to Chicago.

What is OSFCI?

You've seen the phrase dozens of times or more -- at the bottom of a convention flyer, in the back of a progress report, or on the inside of a colorful, slick-covered convention memory book - and probably ignored it: "This event is sponsored by Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc. (OSFCI)." If you are reading this, you've probably take a few moments to wonder "What is OSFCI?"

OSFCI, a non-profit, tax-exempt, all-volunteer (no one gets paid anything) corporation, is the legal entity and umbrella organization under which Orycon and her sister events, Game Storm and CON, operate. The corporation provides year to year continuity for the repeating conventions, and a solid base from which floating events can be run. These events have included CascadeCon, Smofcon (1991 and 2005), World Horror Convention (1996), Potlatch (1996 and 1999), Left Coast Crime (2002) and Westercon (1984, 1990, 1995 and 2001.)

With over 100 corporate members, some from as far away as New York and Boston, OSFCI is a diverse talent pool of convention-running experience. Members range from WorldCon regulars with years of experience to people who have just gotten their feet wet in the heady world of con-running. Membership in the group is easy. It's open to anyone who has been on at least two OSFCI-sponsored event committee lists during the last four-year period. All you need to do to join is volunteer, work on the required number of committees, and then accept the invitation for membership. The corporation holds its annual meeting each May, where the year is reviewed, bylaws changed, and members are elected to the Board of Directors.

The Board decides who will be the chair of Orycon and other repeating conventions, and whether or not to sponsor floating events, such as Westercon or Potlatch. "Sponsorship" means that the event falls under the OSFCI's tax-exempt umbrella, and may use the corporation's post office box, bank accounts and bulk mailing permit, as well as being provided with insurance and a responsible legal entity in the 63 Game Storm 8 unlikely event of a disaster. Occasionally, OSFCI will provide seed money for the development of new events or for bidding committees who wish to bring floating conventions to the area.

Although Board members often work on the events, the Board doesn't run the conventions - the Board's role is that of overseer, ensuring that sponsored events operate within OSFCI's tax-exempt status, as well as that of mentor, providing a source of institutional knowledge and convention experience for the committees. Each convention has a liaison from the Board assigned to the committee. Each committee also assigns an ex-officio representative to the Board.

The Board is made up of up to ten people, elected to two-year terms (usually five each year). The Board meets six times a year -- January, March, May (after the Annual General Meeting), July, September and December -- and everyone with an interest in its activities is welcome to attend those meetings.

OSFCI maintains the capital goods accumulated over the years for use by the various events. Convention committees have use of art show panels, computers, printers, a copy machine, hospitality furnishings, and video and other electronic equipment. These capital goods minimize the equipment that needs to be rented or borrowed, allowing more of convention income to be devoted to producing the quality of events for which OSFCI is well-known.

As part of a being a non-profit, the general membership and Board of Directors of OSFCI feel a strong responsibility to give back to the community that supports the conventions. Often born from specific events, OSFCI sponsors two charitable funds and an award, as well as making liberal donations to a wide range of other charities, museums, schools and libraries - all selected to help improve people's lives and bring the wonderment and joy of knowledge and future to them. The corporation not only offers institutional contributions, but encourages individual ones as well, by maintaining a matching gift fund which matches donations made by OSFCI corporate members to qualified local organizations, such as libraries, museums, schools and the Portland Science Fiction Society, that promote science or science fiction.

The Funds and award are diverse, and provide valuable services to the science fiction community. Both funds are supported by donations, and in the case of the Petrey fund, auctions held at conventions. All donations go directly to the funds for distribution - OSFCI covers the operating and administrative costs of the funds out of general corporate monies. The Susan C. Petrey Clarion Scholarship Fund, OSFCI's oldest fund, annually gives scholarships to students attending the Clarion and Clarion West Writer's Workshops. The Clayton Memorial Medical Fund is a medical emergency fund for needy Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror or Mystery writers in the Pacific Northwest. The Endeavour Award, a juried book award, is handed out annually at Orycon to the best science fiction or fantasy book published by a Pacific Northwest writer. The award includes an honorarium and plaque. OSFCI has also made donations to OMSI, charities, schools and public libraries. Information on the Funds and the Endeavour Award is available at www.osfci.org, or by writing to OSFCI at P.O Box 5702, Portland, OR., 97228.

So -- now you know "what is OSFCI." It's you, it's me, it's us. 64 Game Storm 8
