Käyttöoikeuksien Hallinnan Ja Piratismin Suhde Videopeleissä
Eero Lahtinen KÄYTTÖOIKEUKSIEN HALLINNAN JA PIRATISMIN SUHDE VIDEOPELEISSÄ JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO INFORMAATIOTEKNOLOGIAN TIEDEKUNTA 2021 TIIVISTELMÄ Lahtinen, Eero Käyttöoikeuksien hallinnan ja piratismin suhde videopeleissä Jyväskylä: Jyväskylän yliopisto, 2021, 25 s. Tietojärjestelmätiede, kandidaatin tutkielma Ohjaaja: Halttunen, Veikko Tutkielmassa kartoitetaan käyttöoikeuksien hallinnan (englanniksi Digital Rights Management, DRM) toteutuksien kehittymistä vastauksena ohjelmistopiratismiin, alkaen aikaisten kotitietokoneiden ajalta, painottuen kuitenkin Internetin mukana tulleeseen digitaalisen jakelun aikaan. Hakkerit tulevat vääjäämättä murtamaan sellaiset ohjelmistopohjaiset DRM-lukot, joiden ainoa tehtävä on lisenssin puuttuessa estää pelin pelaaminen, ja jakamaan pelin piraattiversiota Internetissä maailmanlaajuisesti. Aineisto oli paljolti spekuloivaa, jonka vuoksi lisätutkimusta voisi tehdä kokoamalla konkreettisempia lukuja sellaisten pelien myynneistä ja laittomista latauksista, joissa on eri tasoisia DRM-toteutuksia. -

Norse Mythology in Video Games: Part of Immanent Nordic Regional Branding
Norse mythology in video games: part of immanent Nordic regional branding. Lysiane Lasausse Master’s Thesis Master of European and Nordic Studies Department of Area and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki Spring 2018 Supervisor: Peter Stadius. Tiedekunta/Osasto – Fakultet/Sektion – Laitos – Institution – Department Faculty Department of Area and Cultural Studies Faculty of Arts Tekijä – Författare – Author Lysiane Lasausse Työn nimi – Arbetets titel – Title Norse mythology in video games: part of immanent Nordic regional branding. Oppiaine – Läroämne – Subject European and Nordic Studies Työn laji – Arbetets art – Aika – Datum – Month and Sivumäärä– Sidoantal – Number of pages Level year Master 04/2018 Tiivistelmä – Referat – Abstract An estimated 2,5 billion players in 2017, 143 billion revenues by 2020, video games have conquered the market and the homes of almost half the population. Often considered a niche media, recent figures prove that the market keeps on growing. When looking at it from a marketing point of view, video games appear to be the golden goose. Nation branding is all about marketing: selling the best of one’s nation to other nations to attract investors, tourists, brains and technology. Why then, not consider video games as a mean to brand a nation? With such a large scale of influence and potential, one could argue video games seem like the perfect opportunity to make a nation known. Norse mythology did not -and does not- have that many supporters, but its influence is far-reaching: in movies, books, series and video games, it has been a source of inspiration for decades. Video games with Norse elements have been quite popular, especially since 2015. -
Exploring the Game Master- Player Relationship in Video Games Abel Neto
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Videojogos, Game Master, Gameplay, Assimétrico Abstract The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between game participants that assume the role of Game Master and those that have that of Player in videogames. This relationship, barely explored in computer games, has existed in board games for decades, one of the first examples being Dungeons & Dragons, in which a game participant acts both as a referee and as a storyteller, controlling all aspects of the game, except for the actions of the players. Through the development of a game prototype, we found that there’s value in including this asymmetry in computer games, and evaluated its viability and benefits/disadvantages. -

PIRATKOPIERING OCH ILLEGAL NEDLADDNING En Studie Om Piratkopieringsskydd Och Dess Påverkan På Konsumenterna
PIRATKOPIERING OCH ILLEGAL NEDLADDNING En studie om piratkopieringsskydd och dess påverkan på konsumenterna Viktor Pedro, Nazar Larsson Examensarbete på kandidatnivå, 15 hp Digital Medieproduktion SPB 2020.30 Abstract In this modern day and age where internet reigns supreme and the digital age is neigh, there are many ways to copy and illegally acquire software. It is called online piracy. The “crackers” crack the software code which then is illegally distributed online, giving the ability to other users to download the software. Ever since game industry exploded on the market, there has been a “cat-and-mouse game” between game developers and online pirates. Game developers trying to stop the pirates from cracking their products, while pirates finding ways around the code. This is an eternal battle and today we are in a situation where there seems to be a common belief that the protection software affects the performance of video games. By taking a deeper dive in to the game industry, we have concluded that in fact, generally video games that use a 3rd party protection are the most affected in terms of performance. To say that this is non consumer-friendly is an understatement, whereas in this situation people who buy the video game gets the version with worse performance than a pirated copy. This results in clash of developers thinking they are saving themselves some money by stopping the pirates, but, pirating does not necessarily have a bad impact on sales. If sales are not affected, then why would you release a software with protection which performs worse than their counterpart, only for it to be sold less through bad performance and negative feedback from community? We conclude that these kinds of security are far too drastic. -
User and Media Perception on Game Design Anti-Piracy Measures
“Why you mad?” - User and media perception on game design anti-piracy measures Faculty of Department of Game Design Author: Raileanu Petrut Bachelor’s Thesis in Game Design, 15 hp Program: Bachelor’s Programme in Game Design and Graphics,180 c Supervisor: Ulf Benjaminsson Examiner: Xx June, 2020 1 Abstract Video game developers have implemented multiple measures to combat piracy throughout history. One of these measures, defined in this study as in-game anti-piracy measures, prevents player progression on unauthorized copies by degrading gameplay or drastically increasing the difficulty. This study conducts a content analysis research on textual data gathered from the world wide web to assess the public perception in regards to this type of anti-piracy measures. The data gathered for this study consists of 425 statements in the form of comments and forum posts that have been coded, divided into themes and then analyzed inductively to generate findings that can be linked to Moshirnia’s (2012) previous research. Even though no clear results occurred that can confirm Moshirnia’s (2012) findings, this study has discovered a potential connection between in-game anti-piracy measures promoting piracy. The findings also suggest that the unique “broke features” might lead to the popularization of games modded to let legitimate users experience them too.
