Background on Jens Stoltenberg UP CLOSE AND PROFESSIONAL A Case Study of Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg’s Communication on Social Media By Sandra Hasselknippe Dahl-Hansen Supervisor: Kristina Riegert Examiner: Christian Christensen MASTER THESIS, 30 HP (SPRING 2013) Master’s Programme in Media and Communication Studies Stockholm University Department of Journalism, Media & Communication Submission date: May 27th 2013 Abstract It did not take too long before the politicians found the social media sites Twitter and Facebook as good ways to connect to the people and spread their politics. However, due to the somewhat personal origin of these sites, how much of their personal lives do they include within their political reasons for being there? How do they balance the combination of presenting their political and professional self and the personal self? That is what this thesis aim to find out. This is not the first research about political communication on social media, but most of the research in this field has focused on the social media communication during an election. This research however, aims to expand this knowledge by gathering material from a non-election period in order to investigate the day-to-day political communication on social media. Due to the length and structure of this thesis I limit my aim and topic to investigating one politicians social media use and thereby making it a case study. Using an interpretive coding with a grounded approach method I investigated Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg’s communication on Twitter and Facebook during the year 2012. By applying theories about visibility, the presentation of the self, image creation and political communication, the aim is to understand how Stoltenberg use these social media sites. The focus will be on the content of the communication, the mentioned balance between the professional politician and the personal person, and lastly what of these that create the most engagement from the followers in terms of “likes” and retweets. I find and argue that the balance between the Twitter and Facebook content is relatively even, consisting mostly of professional and informational content, while the balance between the professional Stoltenberg and the personal Jens is uneven in favour for the professional. However, due to Stoltenberg’s popular appeal and “folkelig” image, the person Jens Stoltenberg becomes visible on the sites as well. 1 CONTENT Earlier that month, he murdered three French soldiers. A few days after the Toulouse murders, Merah was killed in a shootout with French police.1 Murders in France and elsewhere are frequent, and a significant per- centage of murder victims are children. Yet the murder by this fanatic drew worldwide attention,2 which usually focused far more on the killing of the Jewish victims than that of the soldiers. For French Jews, this tragedy recalled events of past decades, the more so as the murderer was an Al Qaeda sympathizer. Six people in the Jewish Goldenberg restaurant in Paris were killed in 1982 by terrorists, most prob- ably from the Arab Abu Nidal group.3 In the past decade, antisemitic motives were behind murders of Jews committed by Muslims living in France. Sebastien Selam, a Jewish disc jockey, was killed by his Muslim childhood friend and neighbor Adel Amastaibou in 2003. Medical experts found the murderer mentally insane. In 100 days, on the 11th of September 2021, NATO's full withdrawal should be completed. The current acceleration of the process could leave as little as 30 days. We call on NATO member states to act immediately to evacuate Locally Engaged Civilians (LECs) and their families to ensure that those that protected our lives will themselves be safe from reprisals. NATO’s Afghanistan mission assembled one of the largest international coalitions in history. It also assembled the efforts of local Afghan staff, including interpreters, security guards, and cultural advisors, who provided crucial support to NATO-led forces. While NATO countries have been united in their combat and non-combat missions, they have been divided in their protection of Afghan locally engaged civilians. In the absence of a coordinated resettlement programme to protect local staff at risk due to their work for member nations, LECs have faced arbitrary barriers to protection with each NATO partner applying different criteria and reasons for exclusion. The undersigned are acutely aware of the realities on the ground. Our organisations are in daily contact with former and current Afghan LECs whose lives are at risk. They fear that they are excluded from NATO’s ambition to be “united in leaving together”. They are afraid that they will be left behind not only due to inconsistent criteria, but also because the deteriorating security situation makes it impossible to travel to interviews and obtain documents in time.

The Corinne Deloy Conservative Party (H) chaired by former Local Affairs and Regional Development Minister (2001- Translated by Helen Levy 2005), Erna Solberg won 26.8% of the vote and 48 seats (+ 18 in comparison with the previous elections on 14th September 2009). Political parties and individual politicians can use social media to bypass media and communicate directly with voters through websites and particularly social media platforms such as Facebook. But previous research has demonstrated that interaction on social media is challenging for political parties. This study examines the disparity between interaction strategy and online responsiveness and finds that political parties identify three clear disadvantages when communicating with voters online: online reputation risk, negative media attention, and limited resources. In addition, the authenticity requirement many parties adhere to is creating a “social media interaction deadlock,” which is increasing the disparity between the parties’ expressed strategy and online performance. This study compares major and minor political parties’ interaction strategy during the 2013 national election in Norway and combines interviews of political communication directors with an innovative method to collect Facebook interaction data.
