Northern Fjordland Northern Fjordland Day 1 - 27 Jun 19-Depart Australia Please note this flight maybe indirect. Day 2 – 28 Jun 19 - Arrive in Copenhagen, Denamrk Arrival to Copenhagen airport, private transfer to your hotel. Remain of the day at leisure. An exciting and trendy city Split by lakes and surrounded by sea, an energetic and hip waterside vibe permeates Copenhagen, one of Northern Europe’s most user-friendly (and trendy) capitals. Copenhagen city centre is waiting to be enjoyed. It’s a welcoming, compact city with a centre largely given over to pedestrians (and cyclists) and an emphasis by day on café culture and top-notch museums. The historic core of the city is Slotsholmen, originally the site of the twelfth-century castle and now home to the huge Christiansborg complex. Just across the Slotsholmen Kanal to the north is the medieval maze of Indre By (“inner city”), while to the south the island of Christianshavn is adorned with cutting-edge architecture in addition to the alternative enclave of Christiania. North-east of Indre By are the royal quarters of Kongens Have and Frederiksstaden, while to the west the expansive Rådhuspladsen leads via Tivoli Gardens to Central Station and the hotspots of Vesterbro and Nørrebro. Just off hectic Vesterbrogade outside the station is Copenhagen’s most famous attraction, Tivoli, an entertaining mixture of landscaped gardens, outdoor concerts and fairground rides. Helsingør’s Kronborg Castle dates from the sixteenth century when it jutted into the sound as a formidable warning to passing ships not to consider dodging the toll, and it remains a grand affair, enhanced immeasurably by its setting; the interior, particularly the royal chapel, is spectacularly ornate. Beneath the castle are the casemates, gloomy cavernous rooms that served as soldiers’ quarters during times of war. 1 Day 3 – 29 Jun 19 - Copenhagen (B) An authorized local guide will take you for a 2-hour guided tour by foot past Tivoli and through old, narrow streets to the National Museum, Christiansborg Palace and through Nyhavn with its many restaurants and colourful buildings. From there you will continue to Amalienborg Palace before you return to the City Hall square along the pedestrian shopping street Strøget. Day 4- 30 June 19 – Copenhagen (B,D) Breakfast at hotel, end of arrangements and transfer from your hotel to pier to board your MSC Meraviglia cruise. Day 5 – 1 Jul 19- At sea (B, L, D) Day 6 – 2 Jul 19 - Hellesylt/Geiranger, Norway (B, L, D) Arrive 7:00am / depart 5:00pm Landing with your MSC cruise of Northern Europe to Hellesylt, the cosy little town on the shores of the Geiranger fjord, will make it appear like a natural extension of the mountains behind. There are plenty of opportunities to admire the fjord and the town from above during your holidays in Norway. Along the steep Eagle Route (Ørnevegen) you find two perfect observation posts – Dalsnibba, 1500 metres above, and Flydalsjuvet with terraces that open onto the ice valley – surrounded by impressive peaks. If you continue along the Ørnesvingen, as well as Geiranger and the fjord, you will come to the Seven Sisters Waterfalls (De syv søstrene) that offers a magnificent spectacle. If you want to know more about what it means to live on the shores of a Norwegian fjord, visit the Geiranger centre, about a kilometre from the town centre. If you enjoy hikes on foot but you don’t want to exhaust yourself, take the fjord’s southern coast route to Homlong, where you will find a small bar selling excellent, freshly made snacks. But to get a real taste of local cuisine during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe you should not miss a visit to one of the mountain farms where delicious local specialties are prepared. The Herald Summer Farm, for example, has been operating since the 18th century and still produces delicious foods and offers a pleasant experience also for the younger visitors. You can also visit one of the strangest glaciers in Europe, the Briksdal glacier (Briksdalsbreen)Northern Europe introduction, which often baffles experts because of its unconventional “behaviour” in expansion and erosion, often contrary to that of other glaciers at these latitudes. Part of the Jostedalsbreen glacier national park, the Briksdalsbreen ends with a delightful glacier lake, the Briksdalsbrevatnet, that appears and disappears according to the movement of the glacier front. 2 Day 7 –3 Jul 19 – Molde, Norway (B, L, D) Arrive 7:00am / Depart 2:00pm Nature – undisputed protagonist Molde is the most highly populated city in Norway which you can visit during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe. When you get to the city centre, you could visit the Romsdal museum where there is a model of a part of town as it was before the second world war and in which there were 35 buildings built between the 16th and 19th centuries. You can see for yourself whether Norway has changed much or little! From Molde, a footpath takes you through the natural landscape to the panoramic viewpoint of Varden (407 metres a.s.l.) from where you can see the whole town and the splendid Romsdalsfjord. From Varden you have a full view of all 222 peaks, covered in snow all year round, that crown this area protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site. If you want to reach one of the most beautiful and wild settings found in these latitudes, during your MSC cruise, you can climb up Mount Romsdalseggen. The view is breath taking: mountains, waterfalls and rivers will appear in front of your eyes at every turn of direction; in order to allow everyone to take this excursion, different routes have been organized for both experts and families. And don’t miss the troll references: like the Trollstigen mountain road, one of the most popular routes amongst visitors or the majestic peaks and the Stigfossen Falls that seem to irrigate the Isterdalen valley. Half way between Trollstigen and the centre of Valldal, stop in Gudbrandsjuvet, a spectacular group of maelstroms about 5 metres wide and 20 metres deep that takes its name from the legendary outlaw who dived into it with the woman he had just kidnapped. Finally you reach the Face of the Troll, the largest vertical escarpment in Europe: 1,800 metres high to admire from the best viewpoint and picnic area not far from Åndalsnes. Day 8 – 4 Jul 19 - Flaam, Norway (B, L, D) Arrive 8:00am / Depart 6:00pm Fairy tale views To reach Flåm, your MSC cruise ship will navigate into the Sognefjord, the long est of the hundreds of Norwegian fjords. Extending over 204 kilometres and 1,308 metres deep, it is a record breaking fjord in which your ship will head southward, to reach the southern end of the Aurlandsfjord. At this point of your MSC cruise of Northern Europe you will see Flåm, amidst mountains of dense forest reaching up to the sky. In this challenging and remote setting you can see how even a modern means of locomotion like the train can blend in with Norway’s spectacular natural landscape. Take a train ride from Flåm to Kjosfossen: 20 incredible kilometres inside the green coaches up to the station of Myrdal on the Bergen railway line. 3 The landscapes you will admire are truly unique and will make your journey unforgettable. Nature is revealed in its most beautiful and wild landscape, with rock shaped by rivers that form gorges and rifts and waterfalls that plunge down dizzy heights, and, here and there, mountain farms, perched like mountain climbers, where cattle are raised and excellent cheese is produced. And to think that the current to power the train is actually a gift of nature. It is the imposing Kjosfossen waterfalls, that plunge vertically down almost as if to show off to the tourist’s camera, that move the turbines that produce the electric energy for the railway line. Don’t miss the excursion in rubber dinghies or kayaks in the waters surrounding the small port. You will have the opportunity to see the variety of animals and plants that inhabit these shores. Visit the protected areas of the Aurlandfjord and the Nærøyfjord to admire the majestic beauty produced by the activity of the ice and the sea on this land, from a privileged point of view. Day 9 – 5 Jul 19 – At sea (B, L, D) Day 10 – 6 Jul 19 – Kiel, Germany (B, L, D) Arrive 9:00am / Depart 7:00pm A strong relationship with water Arriving on your MSC Cruise of Northern Europe, you will have the chance to visit Kiel, an expanding urban centre on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Kiel became the Imperial military port of Germany in 1871 and, when its canal was opened to connect the Baltic and the North Seas in 1895, the town began to control the largest artificial waterway in the world. Kiel is the ideal location for a relaxing holidays in Germany with an MSC cruise: it is simple and quiet, even during the Kieler Woche international regatta, an event not to be missed by sailing enthusiasts. The few city museums can be visited in one morning, however, if you want to get acquainted with Kiel you cannot ignore its waterways, to which the town is indissolubly bound: they can be visited by taking the Kiellinie footpath or taking a cruise along the Kieler Förde and along the canal. A spacious promenade along the pier will give you the chance to admire a variety of vessels of all sorts, amongst which the dinghies of the sailing school and, from the wet dock in front, the best view one can get of Kiel.

    Copenhagen Liberty Sunday, August 20 We had a couple hours between flights and went to Huxley's for an English Breakfast. We both had opened the box breakfast British Airways offered about an hour and a half before landing... and we closed the boxes back up. Then we cleared the checkpoint for through passengers and had time to catch up before our connecting flight to Copenhagen. Liz had salmon eggs Benedict and I had eggs, English bacon and a banger, grilled tomato, and baked beans. The banger was less than tasty and my stomach began acting up, either from the curried chicken the night before or the banger this morning. I was uncomfortably cramped. We walked through the terminal to catch the transfer train to our gate. They had a standing, woman shaped screen which almost seemed like a hologram and, depending which language had been selected, spoke to passersby to tell them how to use the train. It was quite clever and very realistic. We followed her guidance and made our way to Gate 62 in A Terminal. The two hour flight passed quickly and we were immediately met at luggage claim by our guide to the hotel. There were six people in our ride but later that day we would be joined by another 19 people on the On Line Vacation extension. When we arrived at the Trivoli Hotel and Convention Center we were 121 surprised to see Olivier, our London hotel guide from last year. He would coordinate our booking and then go on to Stockholm later in the week.

    SURVEY ARTICLE Danish Cold War Historiography ✣ Rasmus Mariager This article reviews the scholarly debate that has developed since the 1970s on Denmark and the Cold War. Over the past three decades, Danish Cold War historiography has reached a volume and standard that merits international attention. Until the 1970s, almost no archive-based research had been con- ducted on Denmark and the Cold War. Beginning in the late 1970s, however, historians and political scientists began to assess Danish Cold War history. By the time an encyclopedia on Denmark and the Cold War was published in 2011, it included some 400 entries written by 70 researchers, the majority of them established scholars.1 The expanding body of literature has shown that Danish Cold War pol- icy possessed characteristics that were generally applicable, particularly with regard to alliance policy. As a small frontline state that shared naval borders with East Germany and Poland, Denmark found itself in a difficult situation in relation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as the Soviet Union. With regard to NATO, Danish policymakers balanced policies of integration and screening. The Danish government had to assure the Soviet Union of Denmark’s and NATO’s peaceful intentions even as Denmark and NATO concurrently rearmed. The balancing act was not easily managed. A review of Danish Cold War historiography also has relevance for con- temporary developments within Danish politics and research. Over the past quarter century, Danish Cold War history has been remarkably politicized.2 The end of the Cold War has seen the successive publication of reports and white books on Danish Cold War history commissioned by the Dan- ish government.

Bygningen er 13 fag lang og fem fag bred og er opført af kridtsten, der er pudset og hvidkalkede, i tre etager over en høj kælder. Taget er et mansardtag af sorte vingetegl med rundbuede kviste i mansardetagen og mindre rundbuede kviste i tagfladerne. Der er tre kraftige skorstenspiber med spejle i skaftet i rygningen. Siderne fremtræder hvide over en høj sandstenssokkel. Den refendfugede stuetagen afsluttes af kordongesims. Facaden har midt- og siderisalitter inddelt af hvidkalkede ørelisener og rocailledekorationer af kridtsten. Vinduerne har forkrøppede Gavlen mod Sankt Annæ Plads. indfatninger og under taget er en kraftig, fremspringende gesims, der mod Bredgade er båret af kraftige konsoller. I midt- og siderisalitterne er der relieffer over beletagens vinduer afbildende instrumenter, redskaber, bøger mv. I gavlen mod Sankt Annæ Plads er det midterste vinduesparti i stue- og beletage blændet med påmalet vinduesparti. Midt i bygningen er en portgennemgang, der mod både gård og gade aflukkes med en ældre, tofløjet fyldingsport med rundbuet overvindue med sprosseværk og fremhævet slutsten, mod gården har porten ruder og sprosseværk i den øvre del samt vederlagsgesimser. Portrummet fremtræder med naturstensgulv og tøndehvælvet loft med stukarbejder. Fra portrummet er adgang til palæet samt til kældre via fire fyldingsdøre. Vinduerne er mestendels ældre og traditionelt udførte vinduer af korsposttypen med opsprossede ruder i stue- og beletagen samt torammede, seksrudede vinduer i kælder og anden etage.

Med så vid en definition er det indlysende, at man ikke kan få alt med, og skønt nogle læsere utvivl­ somt vil finde mangler, synes forfatteren dog at have dækket emnet godt, såle­ des at de væsentligste projekteringsarter er omtalt. Som nævnt er illustrationerne det bærende element i bogen. Alligevel må man gøre indsigelse mod teksten, som skæmmes af urimeligt mange trykfejl og unøj­ agtigheder. Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve var trods alt ikke Christian V ’s halvonkel og Frederik VI ikke konge i 1745. Hofbygmester Lauritz Thurah hed ikke Albert til fornavn, ligesom arkitekten N. H. Jardin ikke stavede sig med »Ch« som sin landsmand, den berømte maler. Forfatterens kompasrose har en stærk misvisning, idet en udsigt mod Christiansborg fra Nybrogade angives at være set fra syd, mens Frederikskirken (Marmorkirken) skulle befinde sig øst for Amalienborgkvarteret. Bogen er naturligvis ikke tænkt som en tilbundsgående studie i Københavns byplanmæssige historie - den handler jo netop om de projekter, der ikke blev til noget. Den er en populær fremstilling i billeder og tekst af et særdeles interes­ sant emne, som rigtigt behandlet formår at sige umådeligt meget om hoved­ stadens historie og udvikling siden Christian IV ’s dage. Man er forfatteren tak­ nemmelig for den gode idé, og det er nyttigt at have alle disse ikke-realiserede projekter samlet på et sted. Det kunne blot være gjort bedre. The flooding caused significant problems for the infrastructure in the NH inner parts of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. In certain places up to half a meter of water covered the street and several houses and shops had suffered serious damages. Brønshøj - Husum Østerbro Bispebjerg ØSTERBRO The serious consequences following the cloudburst on July 2nd 2011 and other minor cloudbursts have led the municipalities of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg to initiate this project, Nørrebro which aims to highlight potential initiatives effective in mitigating flooding and reducing damages related to Ladegårdså cloudbursts in the future. Vanløse- INDREIndre BY by The cloudburst solutions presented here cover the Frederiksberg Vest Frederiksberg Øst CH catchments of Ladegårdså, Frederiksberg East & Vesterbro. The proposed solutions for cloudburst management comply with the service level for cloudbursts in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, ie. a maximum of 10 cm of water on terrain Vesterbro during a 100-year storm event. Additionally, in accordance with the intentions and visions set out in the Cloudburst Plan for Copenhagen and Frederiksberg from 2012, proposed Amager solutions are sought developed to include added value and Valby - SH elements, which contribute to making the city more green, Frederiksberg Sydvest more blue, more attractive and more liveable. The cloudburst catchments are prioritized based on an assessment of the flood risks in the individual catchments. Along with the Inner City (Indre by) & Østerbro, the Ladegårdså, Frederiksberg East & Vesterbro catchment belongs to catchments of highest priority.

    SYDHAVNEN/SLUSEHOLMEN COPENHAGEN Harbour renovation project 2000-2009 Text by Sjoerd Soeters Sydhavnen is the southern harbour disctrict of Copenhagen, located south of the historic city. With Java Island in Amsterdam as an example, Sjoerd Soeters was asked by the Municipality of Copenhagen to make a plan for the transformation of Sydhavnen into a residential area. Sydhavnen consists entirely of city blocks, situated so as to be oriented toward the water on all sides. In order to achieve this, kilometers of canal were added to the area. The size of the blocks are based on the dimensions of the large city blocks in the centre of Copenhagen. The twists and curves of the canals create constantly chang- ing spatial effects and sightlines. Sluseholmen is the first application of the Sydhavnen plan. The island is character- ized by a panoramic view of the surrounding water and a more intimate inner side. The inner area is formed by a curved main canal and several short lateral canals. Each city block is made up of different dwelling types. Supervised by Sjoerd Soeters, the facades of the blocks were worked out by different Dan- ish architects.
