Biodiversity Data Journal 5: e21010. https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.5.e21010 Abstract Background During a field course on spider taxonomy and ecology at the University of Helsinki, the authors had the opportunity to sample four plots with a dual objective of both teaching on field methods, spider identification and behaviour and uncovering the spider diversity patterns found in the southern coastal forests of Hankoniemi, Finland. As an ultimate goal, this field course intended to contribute to a global project that intends to uncover spider diversity patterns worldwide. With that purpose, a set of standardised methods and procedures was followed that allow the comparability of obtained data with numerous other projects being conducted across all continents. New information A total of 104 species and 1997 adults was collected. -

Jackson I Zoology Departmen t University of Californi a Berkeley, California 9472 0 ABSTRACT Field data indicate that P. johnsoni is an euryphagous predator, whose diet includes organisms (aphids, ants, opilionids) sometimes considered distasteful to spiders . Other spiders are preyed upon , including conspecifics. Prey size tends to be one quarter to three quarters the size of the predator . INTRODUCTION Since spiders are probably a dominant group of predators of insects (Bristowe, 1941 ; Riechert, 1974; Turnbull, 1973), there is considerable interest in their feeding ecology . Spiders have usually been considered to be euryphagous predators with a stabilizing , rather than regulative, effect on insect populations (Riechert, 1974) . However, informa- tion concerning the prey taken by particular spider species, in the field, is limited . Field studies by Edgar (1969, 1970), Robinson and Robinson (1970) and Turnbull (1960) are especially noteworthy . During the course of a study of the reproductive biology of Phidippus johnsoni (Peckham and Peckham) (Jackson, 1976), occasionally individuals of this species were found in the field holding prey in their chelicerae . Each prey discovered in this way i s listed in Table 1 . In addition, Ken Evans and Charles Griswold, who were familiar wit h this species, recorded observations of P. johnsoni with prey. (Their data are included in Table 1 .) These data came from a variety of habitats in western North America, most o f which have been described elsewhere (Jackson, 1976) . -

In total, the character matrix includes 47 taxa: 35 linyphiids representing the currently used subfamilies of Linyphiidae (Stemonyphantinae, Mynogleninae, Erigoninae, and Linyphiinae (Micronetini plus Linyphiini)) and 12 outgroup species representing nine araneoid families (Pimoidae, Theridiidae, Nesticidae, Synotaxidae, Cyatholipidae, Mysmenidae, Theridiosomatidae, Tetragnathidae, and Araneidae). The morphological characters include those used in recent studies of linyphiid phylogenetics, covering both genitalic and somatic morphology. Different sequence alignments and analytical methods produce different cladistic hypotheses. (2009),24(1-3): 2 In memoriam JEAN-PIERRE MAELFAIT Kortrijk 01/06/1951 Gent 06/02/2009 Jean-Pierre Maelfait is ons ontvallen op 6 februari van dit jaar. We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société. -
Estimating Spider Species Richness in a Southern Appalachian Cove Hardwood Forest

Variation in species richness at the landscape scale is an important consideration in con- servation planning and natural resource management. To assess the ability of rapid inventory techniques to estimate local species richness, three collectors sampled the spider fauna of a "wilderness" cove forest in the southern Appalachians for 133 person-hours during September and early October 1991 using four methods: aerial hand collecting, ground hand collecting, beating, and leaf litter extraction. Eighty-nine species in 64 genera and 19 families were found. To these data we applied various statistical techniques (lognormal, Poisson lognormal, Chao 1, Chao 2, jackknife, and species accumulation curve) to estimate the number of species present as adults at this site. Estimates clustered between roughly 100-130 species with an outlier (Poisson lognormal) at 182 species. We compare these estimates to those from Bolivian tropical forest sites sampled in much the same way but less intensively. We discuss the biases and errors such estimates may entail and their utility for inventory design. We also assess the effects of method, time of day and collector on the number of adults, number of species and taxonomic composition of the samples and discuss the nature and importance of such effects. Method, collector and method-time of day interaction significantly affected the numbers of adults and species per sample; and each of the four methods collected clearly different sets of species. -

CLARK AND JANET BECCALONI Department of Life Sciences, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD. In 2014 the Natural History Museum, London organised a field trip to Slapton. These field notes report on the trip, giving details of methodology, the species collected and those of notable status. INTRODUCTION OBjectives A field trip to Slapton was organised, funded and undertaken by the Natural History Museum, London (NHM) in July 2014. The main objective was to acquire tissues of UK invertebrates for the Molecular Collections Facility (MCF) at the NHM. The other objectives were to: 1. Acquire specimens of hitherto under-represented species in the NHM collection; 2. Provide UK invertebrate records for the Field Studies Council (FSC), local wildlife trusts, Natural England, the National Trust and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway; 3. Develop a partnership between these organisations and the NHM; 4. Publish records of new/under-recorded species for the area in Field Studies (the publication of the FSC). Background to the NHM collections The NHM is home to over 80 million specimens and objects. The Museum uses best practice in curating and preserving specimens for perpetuity. In 2012 the Molecular Collections Facilities (MCF) was opened at the NHM. The MCF houses a variety of material including botanical, entomological and zoological tissues in state-of-the-art freezers ranging in temperature from -20ºC and -80ºC to -150ºC (Figs. 1). As well as tissues, a genomic DNA collection is also being developed. -

Six species and two genera are described as new to science: Bathyphantes paracymbialis n. sp., Nematogmus asi- aticus n. sp., Theoa hamata n. sp.; Asiagone n. gen. is erected for Asiagone signifera n. sp. (type species) and A. perforata n. sp.; Laogone n. gen. is established for Laogone cephala n. sp. The following new synonyms are proposed: Gorbothorax Tanasevitch, 1998 n. syn. = Nasoona Locket, 1982; Paranasoona Heimer, 1984 n. syn. and Millplophrys Platnick, 1998 n. syn. = Atypena Simon, 1894; Gorbothorax ungibbus Tanasevitch, 1998 n. syn. = Oedothorax asocialis Wunderlich, 1974; Hylyphantes birmanicus (Thorell, 1895) n. syn. = H. graminicola (Sundevall, 1830). The following new combina- tions are proposed: Atypena cirrifrons (Heimer, 1984) n. comb. ex from Paranasoona; A. pallida (Millidge, 1995) and A. crocatoa (Millidge, 1995) both n. comb. ex Millplophrys; Nasoona asocialis (Wunderlich, 1974) n. comb. ex Oedothorax Bertkau, 1883; N. asocialis (Wunderlich, 1974), N. comata (Tanasevitch, 1998), N. conica (Tanasevitch, 1998), N. setifera (Tanasevitch, 1998) and N. wunderlichi (Brignoli, 1983), all n. -
