Today, RIKEN is a major international institute conducting research in a wide area of natural science including nuclear physics, material science, green chemistry, brain science, developmental biology, plant science, genomics, immunology, medicine, computer and computational science, artificial intelligence, and mathematics, with facilities both in Japan and overseas, and a staff of more than 3,000 people. However, there is a long history behind this development. This book provides both a record of the people who founded and helped RIKEN prosper, as well as insights into some of the important discoveries that were made during its first century. The bulk of the work on the English version was done in the autumn and winter of 2018, based on the monu- mental three-volume, 1,500-page Japanese history that was written for the Centennial in 2017.
