INNES AND GORDON COLLIER OME YEARS AGO, while researching the context for Equiano’s very successful 1791 tour of Ireland,1 I (Lyn Innes) spent several days in S Dublin’s National Library leafing through eighteenth-century Irish newspapers. It soon became clear that the anti-slavery movement in Ireland was not just concerned with abolishing the slave trade and slavery in other parts of the world,2 for some of these papers carried advertisements for the sale of slaves or offers of rewards for the recovery of slaves or servants who had run away. Among the most poignant of these advertisements was the fol- lowing in a 1768 issue of the Dublin Mercury: A neat beautiful black Negro girl, just brought from Carolina, aged eleven or twelve years who understands and speaks English, very fit to wait on a lady, to be disposed of. Applications to be made to James 3 Carolan, Carrickmacross, or to Mr Gavan in Bridge Street, Dublin. William Drennan, his Medical Life Presidential Address to Ulster Medical Society delivered on 15 October 1998 Randal Hayes, MD, BSc, FRCP, FRCPI Across the country this year many groups are involved in commemorating the bicentenary of the Rebellion of 1798. It seems appropriate that 11h____..._iI. :n_I.I we recall the life of Dr William Drennan, one of the founders of the United Irishmen and in 1808 the third president ofthe Belfast Medical Society, a forerunner of this organisation. William Drennan (Fig 1) was born in Belfast in 1754, the youngest ofnine children ofwhom only three survived. His father, Thomas Drennan, was then Minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Rosemary Street. Although only 12 when his father died, the ideas of Thomas Drennan and his contemporaries had a considerable influence on the development of William's political thought. Thomas Drennan was one of a number of dissenting ministers, educated in Glasgow, who formed a distinct group and through which political ideas were developed and articulated. Drennan was related by marriage to Francis Hutcheson and went in 1720 to assist him in a Dissenting school in Dublin. It was Hutcheson, who returned to Glasgow as Professor of Moral Philosophy, who was to provide the basis for the teaching espoused by this group and which was to influence the development ofWilliam Drennan' s political thinking.     ‘Steadfast supporters of the British connection’? Belfast Presbyterians and the Act of Union, c. 1798 – 1840 Jonathan Wright ‘Ever since the passing of the Act of Union, they have been the steadfast supporters of the British connection’: so wrote the Presbyterian minister and ecclesiastical historian William Dool Killen, of his co-religionists, in the early 1850s.1 Though it reflected an innate political and theological conservatism, Killen’s claim is one that most modern historians would concur with. As the late R. Finlay Holmes, one of Ulster Presbyterianism’s more astute scholars, observed: That many Presbyterians in Ulster were deeply involved in the United Irish movement in the 1790s . and that many of their children and grandchildren became ardent unionists, utterly opposed to any weaken- ing of Ireland’s links with Britain, are incontrovertible facts of Irish history.2 Incontrovertible they may be, but they also rank among Irish history’s more inscrutable facts, for the process by which Ulster Presbyterians became unionists is by no means fully understood. While the sectarian atrocities that occurred in Wicklow and Wexford in 1798 and the emergence of an increas- ingly aggressive Catholic political voice under the leadership of Daniel O’Connell have long been recognised as factors that influenced the politi- cal realignment of Ulster’s Presbyterians in the early nineteenth century, it remains the case, as Ian McBride has recently noted, that ‘[l]ittle is known 1 Killen’s comments can be found in the third volume of James Seaton Reid’s epic History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.     William Drennan 1 William Drennan William Drennan (1754 – 1820), a physician, poet, educationalist and political radical, was one of the chief architects of the Society of United Irishmen. He is also known as the first to refer in print to Ireland as "the emerald isle" in his poem "When Erin first rose". Background Born in Belfast in 1754, William was son to Reverend Thomas Drennan (1696-1768), minister of Belfast's First Presbyterian Church. Thomas Drennan was an educated man from the University of Glasgow and was ordained to the congregation of Holywood, county Down in 1731. Drennan was heavily influenced by his father, whose religious convictions served as the foundation for his own radical political ideas. Education In 1769 he followed in his father's footsteps by enrolling in the University of Glasgow where he became interested in the study of philosophy. In 1772 he graduated in arts and then in 1773 he commenced the study of medicine at Edinburgh. After graduating in 1778 he set up practice in Belfast, specialising in obstetrics. He is credited with having been one of the earliest advocates of inoculation against smallpox, and of hand washing to prevent the spread of infection. Drennan also wrote much poetry, coining the phrase "Emerald Isle" and was the founder and editor of a literary periodical, "Belfast Magazine". He moved to Newry in 1783 but eventually moved to Dublin in 1789 where he quickly became involved in nationalist circles. Society of the United Irishmen Like many other Ulster Presbyterians, William was an early supporter of the American Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Volunteers who had been formed to defend Ireland for Britain in the event of French invasion.

    ‘We will have equality and liberty in Ireland’: The Contested Geographies of Irish Democratic Political Cultures in the 1790s David Featherstone School of Geographical and Earth Sciences University of Glasgow ABSTRACT: This paper explores the contested geographies of Irish democratic political cultures in the 1790s. It positions Irish democratic political cultures in relation to Atlantic flows and circulations of radical ideas and political experience. It argues that this can foreground forms of subaltern agency and identity that have frequently been marginalized in different traditions of Irish historiography. The paper develops these arguments through a discussion of the relations of the United Irishmen to debates on slavery and anti-slavery. Through exploring the influence of the ex- slave and abolitionist Olaudah Equiano on these debates it foregrounds the relations between the United Irishmen and the Black Atlantic. The paper examines the limits of some of the United Irishmen’s democratic politics. It argues that the articulations of liberty and equality by Irish sailors in mutinies in the late 1790s dislocated some of the narrow notions of democratic community and politics associated with the United Irishmen.
