For me it was really impactful because my parents took me traveling, and I just made the best out of it. On April 22, with the aid of a deep La Niña snowpack, the feet of volcanic relief from Paradise to Columbia Crest that has made this trio completed the fi rst ski descent of the Nisqually Ice Cliff: a lifetime line mass of ice and rock one of America’s most classic climbs. GUIDE-BUILT BY Dave Hahn MOUNTAIN GUIDE WITH 13 EVEREST SUMMITS, 27 VINSON SUMMITS AND 281 RAINIER SUMMITS INTEGRATED HOOD Fits over a ski or climbing helmet

1> You’ve summited Rainier almost 300 times: Was the 18K designed to be the ideal piece for that peak? Yeah, for some, but that’s the perfect jacket for me. For instance, heading out the door for fi ve weeks in Antarctica tomorrow, I will have that 18K Jacket on every day of that trip. It’s a Denali piece, it’s a Vinson piece, it’s an Everest piece, it’s a Rainier BURLY SOFT SHELL piece. For me it’s totally my work jacket, the live-in 50-denier stretch fabric layer that I will always have on in those places. SMOOTH FRONT with StormRepel® ® VISLON ZIPPER DWR fi nish 2> What is unique about the guide-built Won’t snag or catch process compared to some of the other companies you’ve worked with? Well, as a mountain guide for 25 years, I think the more common model is you are given a product to test—so to speak—by a manufacturer, but it turns out that the thing is already in production. So your comments are duly noted, but they are not actually going to change the thing that is on the market until some other generation of it comes along in a year or two years or whatever. Very much the dif- ference in this process is that we weren’t going to let an 18K Jacket get to market until we were sold on it. So it was back to the drawing board a couple of times, but yeah, the one that I’m putting in my duffel bag right now to go on this trip, I wouldn’t change a thing about it now. 3> What is your guiding experience in Antarctica? I’ve been to the top of Vinson 27 times. At fi rst, PIT ZIPS when I was going down there, I was the Vinson For max guide for the logistics company down there. I was ventilation

their Vinson guide for fi ve seasons and would spend the summer down there and climb Vinson fi ve or even six times in a season—that’s how I padded my numbers. MICRO-GRID BACKER I’ve also done the Shackleton Traverse a number Facilitates of years. I fi rst started trying to do it in ’97, I effi cient wicking believe, going by ship to the island of South Georgia, which is an Antarctic island and sits in the Antarctic convergence and the currents that HAND surround the continent. POCKETS Storage for Once you’ve gotten onto these and gone critical items across a pass or two, there is nobody that can get you out of that one, except you. There are no helicopters, there is no rescue service—you’re either going to get across the island and get the ship pickup or you’re going to learn to live on penguins. 4> How does it feel retracing the foot- steps of the early explorers? I don’t think you can intelligently go to Antarctica without wondering about the pioneering efforts down there, without learning more about the people that fi rst ventured down there and reached the South Pole and tried to get across the continent. It’s fascinating for me; just like on Everest it’s fascinating being on the fi rst or second step on the Northeast Ridge and trying to imagine what ADJUSTABLE Mallory thought of them; or to be on the Hillary CUFFS Step and trying to imagine Tenzing Norgay and Gusseted to Sir Edmund Hillary or Jim Whittaker and Nawang accommodate Gombu coming to those obstacles. But to be on work or shell Antarctica or South Georgia and to try and fi gure gloves out the exact route that Shackleton, Worsley and Crean took, and to read their accounts of the crossing while you, yourself, are trying to do the crossing and trying to see it through their eyes is very cool.

GET THE MAKALU TEAM’S RUNDOWN ON The Alchemist THE ALCHEMIST A MAGIC FORMULA FOR PEAK-BAGGING EXPANSION.

GUIDE-BUILT BY Melissa Arnot RMI GUIDE WITH THE MOST SUCCESSFUL EVEREST SUMMITS OF ANY AMERICAN WOMAN POP-TOP LID WIDE Hideaway extra lid keeps 1> Have you ever seen an alpine pack MOUTH overloads protected that transitions like the Alchemist 40? ENTRY I feel like I’ve never seen anything on the market Easy access that can do what that pack can do. We went and simple through all the problems of existing packs, and packing we kept coming back to this need for a small WEATHER-SHEDDING pack that can accommodate a bigger load. Ultralight 210-denier triple I was taking the 40-liter Tahoma to Ama Dablam ripstop and TPU-coated, and absolutely maxing it out for an alpine climb. 420-denier double ripstop So our pack designer went back to the drawing board to see if he could do anything about that and came back with the fi rst proto with the convertible idea—which is the foundation for the Alchemist. And part of that is really awesome for me, because I’m carrying big loads up to camps; and then I don’t want to have a big empty pack, so I can squish it down, and it’s perfect. But I also feel that it’s really perfect for our cli- ents. As a professional climber, I’m going to have ADJUSTABLE three or four backpacks, but for a client who is VOLUME going to climb Rainier or going to McKinley, they SYSTEM are probably only going to have one backpack. 40L to 55L To be able to have a pack that can be a 40-liter, (not applicable then be a 55-liter—it’s a pretty big deal. to 30L pack) 2> How did it function for you on Makalu? Both David Morton and I had the same pack on Makalu and the same frame size, and it was pretty adjustable and comfortable for both of us. STEALTH LOOPS Going up we were unsupported, we didn’t have Strap on tools, any Sherpa help, so we were carrying 60 pounds, gear and crampons easily, each. The fi rst time I put it on that way, I was really having issues with how the weight

was carrying, and we were on really unstable terrain. So I was really unsure about it; then I learned how I could raise the load lifter straps, and I didn’t know that before. It was pretty simple EVEN-CINCH and intuitive. DELRIN® RODS After the summit attempt, we were cleaning two Distribute heavy camps, so we had a ton of stuff. It’s a junk show loads evenly coming down: the tents won’t go back in the stuff sacks; the sleeping bags don’t get as small as they should be; and you are just exhausted. SPEED RELEASE We were just strapping things on, and it was at Fast access to axes its absolute maximum capacity. I’d be willing to with pack on wager that my pack was 80 pounds and Dave’s was the same. We just had so much stuff and all of our fuel that we didn’t use, but the pack was great. It got us back to base camp no problem, and I made it small again and went to Everest. 3> With the volume of days you spend EVA MOLDED with your gear—like the 54 days you spent BELT AND on Makalu with the Alchemist proto—does it BACK PANEL become a love/hate relationship? Add support on long Defi nitely. I feel like I come home from an expe- approaches dition, and my duffel bag sits in my garage until a week before my next expedition because I just can’t face taking anything out of there. I feel a lot of pressure and accountability. Because if people don’t like it, and it doesn’t work, I’m signing my name to it; and I want it to be something that will work for everybody. BFF I love having infl uence; and I love having Removable pad functions items that work really effi ciently; and I love for bivy, frame and fi rst aid being able to change things when they don’t work; but I defi nitely get really, really tired of seeing the stuff every day after a month or two months, as it turns out.

GUIDE-BUILT BY Ben Stookesberry PROFESSIONAL EXPEDITION KAYAKER, BANFF FILM FEST WINNER AND BRAZILIAN REALITY TELEVISION STAR INTEGRATED HOOD Fits over ski or climbing helmets 1> Where have you taken the BC-200 and why has it worked well during those trips? I’ve taken the BC-200 to what I think is the full range of really diverse environments we have on the planet. On our fi rst expedition with Eddie Bauer, we took it to the Indian Himalayas. Our highest put-in was above 14,000 feet, where the banks of the river were frozen, and it was the perfect layering item to cut the wind on top of WEATHEREDGE® PRO 3-LAYER my Downlight® Sweater. THERMAWELD® 20-DENIER RIPSTOP NYLON FABRIC When we were taking off that fi rst day on the CONSTRUCTION Waterproof/breathable storm security river, we dropped to 12,000 feet; we had it there, Reduce weight and then we’ve had it with us for the last two and bulk years in the Amazon Basin, where you stay dry from the torrential rain that we count on to swell up the rivers there. And also to be a very lightweight and breathable layer when it’s so hot, and in a lot of cases so buggy as well. It’s wonderful protection from the elements. 2> I know you’ve been on expeditions to Mexico, Pakistan, Colombia, and the Congo, but what is the most surprising part of traveling in Brazil the past three years? It’s very well known that Brazilians are such fun-loving people, but you don’t really under- stand the mentality of the people until you experience traveling into these small towns, where you meet someone on the street and are having dinner at their parents’ house an hour later.

It’s a very welcoming, very friendly environment, and the people there have ended up being so curi- ous about kayaking that they are the one media market on earth that has accepted this reality WEATHER-SEALED ZIPPERS kayaking TV series. It’s so surprising, in this place No need for bulky fl aps that you wouldn’t think would be so savvy to adventure sports or recreational possibilities. But I think the world has seen that in the number of pro surfers and pro skateboarders that are Brazilian; they are really hungry for adventure sports. They are completely enthralled and in love with their own country and the amazing diversity that is there and certainly their amazing rivers. 3> What is the biggest impact you are left with from traveling around the world? LOW-PRO CUFFS I think that certainly the biggest impact it has Adjust for a snug fi t had on me is that I am a pretty open person in STORMREPEL® terms of willingness to travel to destinations that DWR FINISH have pretty shady reputations, like Colombia Sheds rain, sleet and snow or Pakistan. And when I went to a place like Pakistan, I was so worried, because it was two weeks after terrorists blew up the Marriott in Islamabad. But actually seeing places for myself on the ground, speaking of Pakistan and Colombia and the Congo, I found out some of the nicest, most hospitable, most caring, well- grounded people are in these places that have these terrible reputations. People that have faced the most adversity, it seems, are the ones that I’ve found to be some- how the most grounded or most hospitable and the most worth visiting. I think in that way, that’s something that adventure travel does, it’s able to share these places with the outside world in a way that the nightly news never will.

On every continent, mountain peaks and clean water are connected in an intricate dance of precipitation, glaciers, snowmelt and gravity. But in the lowlands downstream from many of the world’s highest peaks, safe hydration is a luxury due to an international crisis where 884 million people lack regular access to clean water and 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation facilities. To raise awareness and funds to combat the worldwide water crisis, First Ascent guide Jake Norton plans to become the fi rst to summit the three highest peaks on all seven continents. Completing these twenty-one summits by 2014 is a big vision, but the tougher challenge for Norton will be achieving his goal of raising $2.1 million and engaging 2.1 million people in the worldwide push for greater awareness about this crisis. As a key element of the effort, Norton will team up with Water For People, an international development aFrica organization operating in eleven countries to partner with local Margherita peaK people to plan, build, fi nance, operate, and maintain safe water and MoUnt stanleY sanitation services. eleVation: 16,763 Ft The most recent tick on Norton’s hit list was a successful climb of 16,763-foot Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley.
