A great deal of time, careful planning and effort has gone into creating an event that will not only teach and inspire, but will continue to develop the sense of a bassoon community. As the largest faculty of music in Canada with roughly 900 students, the University of Toronto has a broad range of degrees, with many specializations, based in many different kinds of music. There will certainly be something in the hundreds of concerts produced each year (many which are free) that you might want to attend. From the wealth of bassoon talent available to us, we have chosen richly varied artists and music to showcase the voice of the bassoon, spanning from the time of Vivaldi (who wrote more bassoon concerti than any composer before or since) bassoon soloists you will hear today range from our globe-trotting, culture-shifting teacher and performer from Memphis, Lecolion Washington, to our singer- songwriter, improvising artists, to our beloved repairman who keeps our complex bassoons humming, to our recently graduated students who have joyfully crafted excellent string players, pianist and conductor...a true glimpse into the panoply of possibilities that exist for bassoonists. Lecolion is President of the PRIZM Ensemble, a community engagement and educational chamber group which he co-founded with Carina Nyberg Washington in 2009. Lecolion is also the In-School Program Director of the “Memphis is Music” Initiative and was named by the Memphis Business Journal as one of the Top 40 under 40 in Fall, 2014. The only non-string recipient of a MPower Grant from the SPHINX Organization, Lecolion is currently on a global concert and masterclass tour, performing in Europe, South America, South Africa and Toronto. winning the concerto competition at the International Festival Institute at Round Top, which ignited his desire to pursue a career in bassoon. Today, Lecolion is most proud of his two sons, Henning and Matteus. lecolion.com Local Guest Artists Currently working at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Cecilia Lee is an inquisitive collaborative artist on piano, harpsichord and organ. In 2009, she attended all three collaborative pianist internships at the Banff Centre of Arts, performing solo, chamber and orchestral keyboard music. Cecilia received her DMA Piano degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In addition to performing, Ms. Lee is an active recording engineer, working with the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and various freelance projects in the city. 11 Das Fagott Mannschaft unhinged bassoonists whose creativity cannot be contained by your typical symphony orchestra. They have performed for thousands at Yonge-Dundas Square, appeared at the Northern Lights Festival Boréal, and played to standing-room only crowds at pubs, bars and cabarets. Last year they released their Hannah, featuring female impersonator Eve Angelica. Das Fagott Mannschaft play regularly in venues around Toronto, and on summer evenings can be caught on street corners busking, see them on March 8, 2015 at Byzantium! Music Director of group of 27, his biggest accomplishment to date is founding the orchestra and helping the group grow and thrive. Eric is most proud of his close-knit family. His next big project is a stand-up-paddleboarding lake trip this summer with lots of camping gear. groupof27.com 12 Fraser Jackson has been the Contrabassoonist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 1990 and continues to enjoy many interesting outside projects including chamber music, contemporary music, arranging, and teaching.
