Further information and guidelines for the authors are available at http://ojs. inz.si/index.php/pnz/index. Raziskovalna spoznanja, dobljena v letih 2004–2014, so programsko skupino z vidika vsebinske povezanosti obravnavane problematike usmerila v zdajšnjo razčlenitev razvoja strankarskih subjektov in države v idejnopolitični, kulturni in družbenogospodarski dinamiki moderne in postmoderne dobe na Slovenskem. To je bil doslej opazen manko v slovenskem zgodovinopisju. Raziskovalna osredotočenost programske skupine zajema obravnavo pojma stranke kot tvorbe modernih in modernizirajočih se političnih sistemov, obravnavo pogojev in načinov ustanavljanja strank ter njihovega značaja kot različnih sistemov skupinskih družbenih, ideoloških, političnih, vrednostnih in narodnostnih smotrov ter sredstev. Na tej podlagi in ob upoštevanju vsakokratnih zgodovinskih okvirov političnega delovanja programska skupina razčlenjuje konkretne strankarske orga- nizme

These goals play an important role in promoting social progress. The key characteristic of progressive cities should be their openness to the general public and equal accessibility for everyone regardless of their gender, race, age, or social status, and under the same conditions. Public buildings with their associated public spaces form an integral part of the city. For public buildings to be truly public these should follow the same principles as the open city. And it is architecture that has the power to design such truly public buildings. Unfortunately, Slovenia has not yet recognized that it could constitute itself as a modern state through the architecture of public buildings. Keywords: state, values of social progress, public building This article deals with the topical issues of the architecture of public buildings in Slovenia after 1991 viewed through the social values of progress. The introductory presentation of the issues and key terms (state, social values of progress, public building) is followed by an attempt to find the answer to the question which principles of the modern state should public buildings reflect and enforce, using the listed references (the primary reference being an essay by Richard Sennett entitled The Open City).

  • How the Perception of Identity in Roman Funerary Archaeology Developed in Slovenia
Stemberger, K. 2020. Identity Through the Looking Glass: How the Perception of Identity in Roman Funerary Archaeology Developed in Slovenia. Theoretical Roman Archaeology Journal, 3(1): 7, pp. 1–15. DOI: https://doi.org/ 10.16995/traj.423 RESEARCH ARTICLE Identity Through the Looking Glass: How the Perception of Identity in Roman Funerary Archaeology Developed in Slovenia Kaja Stemberger Independent researcher, SI [email protected] This paper addresses how the changes in Slovenian politics have been influencing the inter- pretation of identity in the sphere of Roman mortuary archaeology. The paper starts with an overview of the political history of Slovenia, separated into three phases: the period until 1945, the Yugoslav period (1945–1990), and independent Slovenia (1991–present). The second part of the paper focusses on theoretical studies directly discussing identity of the deceased in Roman period Slovenia. The majority of such studies is centred on the material from larger cemeteries, notably those of Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio (modern Ptuj) and Colonia Iulia Emona (modern Ljubljana), of which the latter is better documented and researched. The paper concludes with a discussion of the potential for future studies. Keywords: Roman archaeology; History of archaeology; Identity Introduction This article aims to examine how the context—political, cultural, ethnic, historical, personal—of the researcher as an individual human being influences their work. The idea sprouted from a study on the role of communication and linguistic theory in archaeology (Stemberger Flegar 2020), which discussed the ways in which language and communication can influence understanding of the theory. It soon became clear that language is only one of the factors which affect our understanding of the world.

YUGOSLAVIAN BOOK DESIGN, I CATALOGUE JANUARY 2019 #2 YUGOSLAVIAN BOOK DESIGN, I www.pahor.de YUGOSLAVIAN BOOK DESIGN, I Yugoslavia's Leading Artists Design & Illustrate Popular Editions The illustration and cover design of popular editions of books was one of the most prominent and culturally significant forms of artistic expression in Yugoslavia. Many of the country's leading academic painters and sculptors, as well as top architects illustrated numerous volumes over their careers, and far from seeing these endeavours as 'side projects', they tended to consider their book commissions to be amongst their best and most serious work. It seems that the more famous the artist, the more books they designed or illustrated. During the time of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918 - 1941) artists, such as Maksim Gaspari and Ljubo Babić, created a new style of bibliographic design predicated upon reviving traditional Slavic motifs, re-invigorating them for a modern audience. Themes of Pan-Slavism and a fascination for Russian literature were prominent. This was, in part, due to a reaction to the fall of Austrian Habsburg hegemony, replacing Germanic motifs with those thought to be true to indigenous culture, even if some echoes of the Viennese Jugendstil still influence book design into the 1920s. The profound appreciation of literature in Yugoslavia and rising literacy rates supported a vibrant commercial publishing industry. Printing houses in cities such as Belgrade, Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Sarajevo responded by producing low-cost issues of numerous works by both domestic and foreign authors. As commercial competition was intense, the rival publishers engaged in a contest to engage the best artists to create the most dazzling designs and illustrations to attract readers.
