    VALE OF GLAMORGAN AMBASSADOR LLYSGENNAD BRO MORGANNWG Vale of Glamorgan Arts & Crafts ‘The Vale of Glamorgan & Glamorganshire’ Not surprisingly, historical records about the Vale of Glamorgan, often refer to just ‘Glamorgan’ or Glamorganshire’ and each will be mentioned in this account. Glamorgan or, sometimes, was one of the thirteen historicGlamorganshire counties of Wales. It was originally an early medieval petty kingdom of varying boundaries known as Glywysing until taken over by the Normans as a lordship. In later years, Glamorganshire was represented by the three counties of Mid Glamorgan, South Glamorgan and West Glamorgan. The name now survives in Vale of Glamorgan, the most southerly county in Wales, neighbouring those of Cardiff, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taff. ARTS & CRAFTS a tradition of making in the Vale It is in no doubt that the Vale of Glamorgan has inspired poets and writers, painters and authors, from Turner to modern day photographers, yet it is music that remains the strong undercurrent here today, and more recently storytelling. The Vale is home to two internationally renowned festivals, one the Vale of Glamorgan Music Festival, the other Beyond the Border International Storytelling Festival. Pottery has also been a prevalent making tradition in the Vale of Glamorgan. The heritage and reputation of the Ewenny Potteries on the boarder of the Vale is known not just across Britain but worldwide amongst ceramics enthusiasts and the tradition continues today. PURPOSE OF REPORT This report describes the work of Glamorgan Archives for the period 1 March to 31 May 2019. 2. BACKGROUND As part of the agreed reporting process the Glamorgan Archivist updates the Joint Committee quarterly on the work and achievements of the service. Members are asked to note the content of this report. 3. ISSUES A. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES 1. Staff Maintain establishment The Glamorgan Archivist began flexible retirement in March and is now working reduced hours in preparation for full retirement on 1 April 2020. Stephanie Jamieson, Project Conservator, has been successful in obtaining the post of photographic conservator at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She leaves the project in early June having completed much of the required conservation and planned out the remaining tasks. She has been an asset to the office and all staff wish her well in her future career. Hannah Price, Archivist, has returned from maternity leave to slightly reduced hours. The Cultural Ambition Trainees moved on to their next placements at Caerphilly Castle and the National History Museum, St Fagans. The Corporate Trainee came to the end of his placement. Grace Mountjoy, temporary Records Assistant, has also ended her employment. Their contribution has been very welcome and staff were sorry to lose them. Lowis Elmer, Records Assistant, completed her distance learning studies in Archive Administration at Dundee University and has been appointed to the role of part time Archivist working on externally funded projects.

Mayor of Barry Purpose of the Project The aim of the Vale Ageing Well Programme and the Senior Health Shop (SHS) is to improve the health and wellbeing of older people in the Vale of Glamorgan. We do this by providing A place to meet, socialise, make new friends, helping to reduce isolation amongst older people. A café that serves healthy options, beverages, and meals at a reasonable cost. Healthy Ageing opportunities for the clients in the shop and across the Vale of Glamorgan. A one stop centre for information, with an information desk staffed by volunteers trained as “Senior Health Mentors” Information clinics provided by partner organisations. Volunteering opportunities to get older people involved in the community. A low cost nail cutting service for those who cannot cut their own toenails. A variety of classes. How much did we do? The café: Dementia Friendly - Volunteers run the café, all but 2 have completed their essential food hygiene, the 2 will be doing so in April/May and until then serve, make drinks, wash up and use the till, food handling waits until the certificate has been obtained. We have recently all (that is all staff and volunteers) trained as Dementia Friends, and the café holds a certificate for its commitment to being Dementia Friendly, all new volunteers will be taking the Dementia Friends training as part of their induction, our aim being to be a café where Dementia is not seen as a barrier in any way, sense, or form.
