School for the 21st century at the heart of the community Airport Sponsor Key Event

Year 7 pupils in School were awarded their certificates in a special Passport presentation ceremony recently.

The pupils have worked on a transition programme between Easter of Year 6 and Easter of Year 7, and have been awarded stamps for completing tasks in lessons in all subjects, and for other aspects such as attendance, taking part of the wider life of the school, etc. The pupils received white, bronze, silver or gold certificates, depending on their achievements, and special awards were made to pupils from each form class for endeavour, improvement or achievement.

Primary school Headteachers and staff attended the ceremony to see their ex pupils awarded, and Tatum Muir from attended to present awards.

The airport has been sponsors of this event for several years now and has supported the pupils by coming to school to promote the event, and running events for groups of pupils at the airport.

The ceremony was opened by a ‘celebration of talent’ and involved Jack Wilkinson on piano and Lauren Mcloughlin on flute.

Guest speaker was Cat Peters, researcher for BBC sport. She spoke about the importance of not letting things get in the way of your ambitions, and about the importance of working hard in school to give yourself better opportunities in the world of work.

As a school one of our aims is to keep all pupils safe and happy during their school years. With this in mind there are many activities that take place during school time in order for pupils to be the best that they can be.

The school wellbeing committee comprising of pupils from across the school and staff from various departments meet once every half term to discuss issues that affect pupils such as bullying, school rules and community involvement. In the last meeting the committee agreed on a school definition of wellbeing. To us it means:- . having self-respect and confidence . feeling successful and able to play an important role in your wellbeing . having friends who support you, who you share mutual trust with . being physically active, having hobbies and being a good citizen in the community . always trying your hardest in everything you do

Pupils in year 7 & 9 completed an online assessment to measure their wellbeing called the NBAR test. The test asked them about their friends and how they feel about themselves and others. There will be retesting in the summer term in order to see if any improvements have been made from interventions that took place.

We were lucky as a school to have Mrs Gibbon from the join us and work with groups of pupils or individuals in order to improve wellbeing. There are also big plans to launch a new anti-bullying programme in school. WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!

Wellbeing -

what is it all about?

The Vale of Glamorgan Project of Wellbeing The project is based on the National Behaviour and Attendance review (NBAR), which concluded that the ‘early identifi cation of behavioural and emotional difficulties’ was an area of need. Online assessments were devised by Dr Robin Banerjee, principal psychologist at Sussex University, that measure the social and emotional intelligence of pupils. Throughout the course of the school year, all pupils will complete the online assessments entitled ‘My feelings’, ‘My Cl ass’, and ‘My School’. The results will provide us with vital information about how each pupil views themselves as a learner, how well they feel they can resolve problems and barriers to learning and how confident they are socially within the school community. From this information as a school we can then work to provide all pupils with the best conditions in school to maximise their potential as learners. We are moving into the third year of the project and feel that so far it has been a massive success. We are aiming to develop our work and reach further into the community. We aim to include Parents, Staff and governors in the continued development of whole school wellbeing.

Llantwit Major Sixth Form As we say goodbye to Year 13 students, we want to particularly thank the prefect team: Head Girl Laura Smith, Head Boy Matthew Jones, Deputy Head Girl Zoe Roberts, Deputy Head Boy James Williams, and prefects Holly Allen, Celyn Bennett, Rebecca Bown, Megan Davies, Dani Fowler, Carly Leonard, Glenn O’Leary, Tom Parker, Alice Peters, Dylan Richards, and Josh Sanderson. They’ve done a wonderful job both in organising social events and playing a wider part in the work of the school and the wider community. We wish all year 13 leavers the very best of luck with their results in the summer and their university/college/new jobs in September. Year 12 students will now take over as the new prefect team with Head Girl Bethan Davies, Head Boy Charlie Parsons, Deputy Head Girl Emily Steen, Deputy Head Boy Josiah Newcomb, and prefects Chloe Davies, Adam Hanley, Chloe Hopkins, Olivia Holt, Dan Irving, Callum Jones, Sophie Jonas, Callum Nixon, and Aimee Price. We are sure they will do a superb job! Year 12 Transition – the change from GCSE to sixth form study is never an easy one, from choosing the right subjects in year 11 right the way through to settling in during the first term of year 12. We know how important it is to give students the best advice and support them through these changes and to help us do that we undertook a survey of how the students in year 12 felt about the advice they were given. We were pleased to see that the vast majority of students did feel that the advice had been useful and we will use the feedback from the survey to help us support them further in future years. Year 7 – A Super Success in 2013

There was trepidation among the new starts back in September and having spoken to various members of the cohort, they are now wondering what all the fuss was about. Who can believe that those nine months have passed almost in the blink of an eye? As with any transition, there have been ups and there have been downs, but we’ve made it through.

Looking back throughout the year there have been many outstanding achievements, not only academic, but also on the sports fields, in the drama studios and in the world of music. Although there have been many notable achievements from across the curriculum, there are for me a few which particularly stand out from my first year as Leader of School.

In the first half term, Year 7 pupils demonstrated their grit determination in succeeding, particularly when it came to taking part in the annual charity cross country race. Competition set in and pupils were intent on making a positive name for themselves, setting themselves up to represent the school in further athletic meetings.

Scientists were born, with Mrs Birt, our talented Head of Science commenting on the standard of our budding scientists in the Year 7 cohort. Pupils were asked to create a cell as a transition task and Mrs Birt was incredibly impressed with the efforts made by some of our pupils and excited to see this enthusiasm continue as they continue through the school. Gymnasts, dancers and netball champions began to show talent throughout the year in their respective fields and have gone on to represent the school in various tournaments. Mrs Rees and Miss Woolf of the PE department have expressed that the pupils in Year 7 have shown a lot of dedication and professionalism when representing the school and that they look forward to seeing them achieve further success next year.

Year 7 – A Super Success in 2013

Away from the daily routine of school, a group of pupils have had the opportunity to work on projects and take part in the annual residential trip to Storey Arms. This trip was a great success with Year 7 pupils developing their teamwork skills as they had the opportunity to mix with a range of pupils from across the year group.

The team at Storey Arms declared that our pupils were extremely level-headed when faced with new challenges and that they were completely undeterred when climbing Pen-y-fan in adverse weather conditions. Their sense of exploration is one that I hope will continue to shine through on further outdoor expeditions.

So now, as we approach the end of the academic year I would like to say that I have enjoyed having the opportunity to work with this year group. I look forward to hearing about their future endeavours under the guidance of Frau Rees who will be taking over as Leader of School for Year 8. I can only hope that next year’s cohort will live up to the standards set by their predecessors.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the school throughout the year and wish your child every success next year.

Mr. W. Miskimmin Leader of School Year 7

School successful in MoD Bid

Llantwit Major School is proud to announce that it has been successful in gaining funding of £80,000 from the Ministry Of Defence £3M SUPPORT FUND FOR STATE SCHOOLS WITH SERVICE CHILDREN.

The fund was set up to assist schools to mitigate the effects of exceptional mobility and/or deployment that their Service community may face.

2012/2013 saw Llantwit Major School and the linked Primary schools benefitting from funding, allowing them to dedicate staff to support students of service families. The funding also developed the Forces Family Support Officer role, and as a result of this the FFSO has forged strong links with the MOD, Families and Education providers. 2013/2014 funding allocation will allow the work to be introduced and developed in Llantwit Major School, supporting children from years 7 – 13.

If you have any queries about this project, or if you are a service family parent from Llantwit Major School or one of our feeder schools who would like further information, please contact the FFSO, Katie Coleman, on [email protected]

PTA raise funds for pupils

Dedicated members of Llantwit Major School's PTA were out on bank holiday Monday running a stall to raise more funds for the school. They made £96 at the Lions Fair, in addition to money raised at their parents evening café in school, and at the lower school disco.

The PTA has been able to donate £600 to a Peace Conference being organised by the school's Interact club (led by sixth form pupils with the Rotary club). The Peace conference will take place at the school on 17 July.

The school is very grateful for the hard work of the team. Any new members are welcome and should contact Mrs Pownall at the school for more information. Music Department News Young Composers entered for the BBC Doctor Who ‘Create A Soundtrack’ Competition In May, students from Year 8 and 9 were given the opportunity to take part in a brilliant new competition from the BBC. They were asked to create a soundtrack to a recent clip of Doctor Who that will be showcased at the BBC Proms in 2013!

Music is a vital part of film and television production and the job of composing requires creating and orchestrating ideas, whilst working to strict deadlines. This competition only allowed our students a four week turnaround!

Composers need to develop the ability to use new technology and all pupils made use of the specialist music software (logic pro) available within the department. The pupils explored their ideas through rhythm, melody and texture whilst gaining a feel for the narrative and drama.

All the soundtracks were scrutinised by the music department teachers and of these, four were selected to be entered into the competition.

The groups put forward for entry were: Year 8 Thomas Colgan and Ellis Mcdonald Year 9 Bethany Nash and Rhiannon Hilditch Matthew Davies and Ethan Forrest Bianca Grad and Abigail Meakin

All entries will be judged by top composers, including Ben Foster (conductor and orchestrator for Doctor Who and composer for Torchwood) and winners will be mentored by professional composers.

Congratulations to our composers and good luck in the competition. We have our fingers crossed for you!

RS department link with local church

A warm welcome was extended to twelve Yr 7 pupils and their teacher, Mrs Williams, from Llantwit Major Comprehensive as they joined the congregation at St Illtud’s Church for their Wednesday morning service.

The particular focus of the service was to present the Religious Studies Department at the School with a set of 30 Youth Bibles which had been kindly sponsored by members of St Illtud’s Church. During Lent, churchgoers were invited to ‘Sponsor a Bible’ for the school and the generosity shown was overwhelming.

All the pupils took part in the service, some reading Bible passages and others explaining why the Bible was an integral part of their studies in RS. Pupils were asked to prepare a short explanation on why the Bible was still important in the 21st Century and their finished results included reasons such as: “The Bible is the Holy word of God”, “The Bible is a source of inspiration to millions”, “The Bible stories and teachings give us a guide for how to live our lives”, “The Bible has 66 books which are all interesting in their own right”, “The Bible explains our purpose in life – to love God and to love one another” and “The Bible is arguably the most influential book ever written”.

“We are delighted to donate these Bibles to assist the pupils with their studies and to help them consider more deeply the nature of God and the significance of faith and religion for their own lives and within the lives of those around them. Last year the school kindly designed, produced and donated the beautiful Celtic Cross which is now located in the Jesse Niche in church (shown in photograph). It is wonderful that we can show our appreciation and demonstrate the partnership that exists between church and school through our gift of these Bibles”, commented Revd. Huw Butler. The pupils were so impressed at the kindness shown to them by the congregation that they have asked to return again! RS Yr 8 Humanities Trip

On the 5 and 6 June, Year 8 pupils went on an interesting trip to four different places of worship.

The first day, pupils visited a Gurdwara which is a Sikhs place of worship. After they were given a very warm welcome they entered the prayer hall, where they were greeted by the beautiful display of the canopy at the front. Under the canopy lay a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib—the Sikh holy book.

Pupils had to be careful not to point their toes towards the Holy book as this is seen as disrespectful in Indian culture. Some parts of the Guru Granth Sahib were sang to them and afterwards traditional worship music was played. At the end of the service they were invited downstairs for refreshments and to ask any questions they had.

Following their trip to the Gurdwara, the pupils experienced a Mosque, an Islamic place of worship. After they had all removed their shoes, they were welcomed in by the Imam who answered all of their questions about Islamic beliefs, practices and ethics. A pupil said, “the best bit was talking to Imam because of his experiences.” They also took part in the prayer rakkah movements which form part of the daily prayers that Muslims partake in. It involved bowing which they found a unique experience. Surrounding the room were beautiful stained glass windows with different colours and patterns. RS Yr 8 Humanities Trip

On the 6 June the Year 8 pupils were in for another exciting day visiting two different types of Synagogues where the Jewish faith is worshipped.

The first Synagogue they visited was an Orthodox Synagogue where they were greeted by the Rabbi himself who presented them with a talk about the key features of Judaism. They were then invited to explore the prayer hall and a pupil commented, “It was nice to have freedom to walk around on our own.” Some pupils even had a go at blowing the shofar which is used in prayer.

Some were then given the opportunity to visit the Reformed Synagogue where all of the boys wore a Kippah which is worn by males to honour God. Some of them tried on the tefillin as well. The pupils were then invited to read the Hebrew scrolls but they soon found out it wasn’t easy! The scrolls are read from right to left and they don’t contain any vowels or punctuation. In addition, the small dashes and dots change the sound of the letters being read.

Written by Paige Melville, 12JAD as part of Work Experience Art Department News Adran Gelf Newyddion Year 7 and Year 11 pupils at Llantwit Major School joined creative forces to come up with a mixed media picture for Hospital’s 80th Anniversary School Art Competition.

Pupils discussed what would make them feel happy or make them smile, especially when they might have to visit a hospital. They discussed different objects, music and events that would really lift a patient’s spirits. Visiting a hospital can be a worrying time for the family and friends of the patient. The pupils talked about how grateful they were for the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital and how many people they have assisted since the 1930’s.

The pupils decided that the simplist way in making someone smile in hospital was to actually think of something funny. The pupils in Year 7 believe that smiling is highly contagious and days are wasted without laughter in them. The pupils decided to design huge, funny, faces using their own photographs they had digitally enhanced using Photoshop. The pupils used these images as inspiration to make their own mixed media portraits using collaged papers, water colours, oil pastels, pencils and pens.

Year 11 pupils helped to cut out the portraits and arrange them in an exciting composition. Year 11 pupils decided to write the name of Llandough Hospital around a globe as they wanted to signify they importance of helping others globally. Year 11 pupils understand how many lives Llandough Hospital has helped, healed and supported over the past 80 years. Pupils at Llantwit Major School wishes to donate this art work entitled “Making Someone in Hospital Smile” as a “thank you” for being such a wonderful hospital, the real heart of the community.

Year 5 pupils from the 6 feeder primary schools visited Llantwit Comprehensive School just before Easter to take part in an ice bridge programme.

The pupils learnt about aspects of civil engineering as well as developing their team building and leadership skills to work together to build a bridge.

The instructors gave fantastic feedback on the pupils’ enthusiasm and application. They were completing the task in record breaking time!

Transition has it that the teachers should always be the ones to test the bridge by walking over it first to make sure that it doesn’t collapse. The pupils from Eagleswell, Rhws, Llanilltud Fawr, St Illtyd, and Wick and were keen to keep that tradition!

Llantwit Major School looks forward to welcoming year 5 pupils back for their transition day in July.

Psychology A level is thoroughly intriguing. You get to learn about such a vast range of topics, from stress through to schizophrenia.

The subject allows you to gain a deeper and stronger understanding of so many topics, a lot of which fits in to day to day life.

Psychology has helped me improve my essay writing skills and enabled me to think logically when both learning and answering questions. By Zoe Roberts, Year 13.

PE Department News Newyddion Yr Adran Addysg Gorfforol Report on Best Foot Forward at Barry Memorial Hall by Alannah Goss and Lucy Tregidon

On Tuesday 19 March a group of 5 year 11 girls, took part in a dance show in Barry Memorial Hall. The dance show consisted of some of the best youth dance groups in the local area and we were very pleased to be able to join them. The performers ranged in age from the lower end of Primary school right up to our age group.

Following the Eisteddfod auditions, the PE department asked for the 5 of us (Alannah Goss, Lucy Tregidon, Sophie Lee, Alice Ryan and Jessie Price) to combine our juxtaposing styles of dance to create an interesting and unique piece that we could showcase at the event. Our only criteria was the song had to be from a Musical and we soon narrowed our options down to Show Me How You Burlesque by Christiana Aguilera from the musical Burlesque and I’m Not The Girl from Wicked, to which we produced 2 pieces of dance. The first, being inspired by commercial style dance, was a full group energetic and unique piece that allowed us to experiment with choreography and have fun. The second was a much more serene contemporary piece that was performed by the two of us. This piece allowed us to test our contemporary dance skills and also allowed us to enhance our partnership skills by using lifts and moves in cannon.

Rehearsals consisted of 2 weeks in the school gym every break and lunch time in order to get our dance to the best standard it could possibly be and the day of the show we were invited to Barry Memorial Hall to practice on stage. Being on the big stage in comparison to the school gym allowed us to practice our performance to a much better standard and helped us get into the spirit of everything. The rehearsals went well and we felt confident with our pieces.

Despite a few technical issues that lead to a delay in our performance, everything went well on the night and we performed the dance better than we ever have before. As a group we thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to perform in such a different place and as a bigger group. We hope to get more similar opportunities in the future. Sports Day 7 June 2013

Jenner Park hosted Llantwit Major Schools annual school sports day this year and a fantastic day was had by all.

This year the pupils decided on splitting into two teams, one representing the Army and one the Navy. This well-known rivalry provided pupils with a competitive spirit leading up to the day and all pupils got behind their teams and enjoyed cheering them on to success. Team Navy prevailed as the winners in a very closely fought match. There were some outstanding performances by athletes most notably Charlie Neale who broke the 100m, 200m, 800m and hurdles Year 10 records, Lauren McLoughin, who broke the year 7 100m, 70m hurdles and high jump records, Sam Palmer who broke the year 9 High Jump record, Sam Snaith who broke the year 8 long jump and hurdles records, Cameron Locke who broke the Year 8 discuss record and Richard Dangerfield, who broke the Year 10 javelin record.

A special thanks to Chelsea Dawes who baked a beautiful Sports Day cake, to all parents who came to cheer the pupils on and to all staff who helped to make the day a very successful one. Congratulations to all pupils who took part in the day and we will look forward to next year’s battle between Team Army and Team Navy. LLantwit Major Lead the Way!

Year 10 trip to Thorpe Park to attend a marketing seminar On the 6 June students in the Year 10 Business Studies class were given the exciting opportunity of travelling to Thorpe Park to learn about the marketing and business side to it. They were shown a presentation where they learnt about the future of Thorpe Park including subjects such as the importance of branding. While they were there they also made the most of the day in the beautiful weather enjoying the rides.

At 6:30 am the sleepy students were setting off in the coach, excited for their day ahead. They arrived at 10am, ready for their marketing seminar at 10:15am which has been described by pupils as, “educational,” “funny,” and “interesting.” After that they were then given free time until 4 to explore the park and try out the rides. Some pupils decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and they tested the water section, some were still soaking by the end of the day!

Mrs Gallo accompanied the pupils on their trip and she said it was, “A great day! The pupils were all very responsive in the marketing seminar, they were a pleasure to take.”

Lisa Marie Greve and Roanne Rodd said, “The day overall was fab. The marketing talk was really funny and informational. We learnt a lot about who sponsors the park and some of the seasons. Our favourite ride was ‘Collossus.’”

Written by Paige Melville, Year 12 JAD as part of her Work Experience

Yr 13 Well done year 13s. You all worked so well to ensure your evidence for the WBQ assessment was of the finest quality. The individual investigations were excellent in most cases and you’ve certainly demonstrated the higher order skills that are essential to life beyond 6th form. We’re eagerly anticipating our results in August and I’ve every confidence that you’re all going to do well.

The result of our survey indicates that nearly 89% of students are using their WBQ points to get into their choice of course. That’s a very useful 120 points that they can rely on should they not achieve their expected grades in any of their other options. Their course choices are diverse, interesting and challenging. It’s a real sign of their maturity and progress and the WBQ department wishes each and everyone one of them the success they deserve. See you all on results day.

Yr 12 The year group worked well to ensure that their essential skills and wider skills were all complete and ready for assessment. Only a small number were not entered for this series but they’ll have every opportunity to submit their work for the next round. This is yet another measure that’s been put in place to ensure that only work of the highest standard will be considered for entry into each award.

12PR showing off their Problem Solving work on climate change

Work experience placements are under way and a huge thanks goes out to all parties involved in the organisation of this event.

Work experience plays an essential role in achieving the WBQ award as it helps to develop and put into practice the skills they’ve been learning about. Tutors and staff will be getting in touch with students to monitor their progress during work experience and discuss any issues that may have arisen.

Our tutors play a vital role in mentoring their students and this helps students remain on track and provide opportunities for one to one discussion about topics that are important to the student.

Students have a busy end to the year and as such attendance is vital. They’ll be starting their Individual Investigation on a topic of their choice and will receive essential tuition and guidance on how best to complete this. This piece of work also contributes to their essential skill in communication and as such I can’t emphasise the importance of this work enough.

We’re visiting the Swansea National Waterfront Museum on Monday 15 July. The purpose of the visit is to allow students an in depth view of the life and culture of the people of Wales. This will provide us with a wealth of topical and current information that will assist students in completing their WBQ diaries – another assessed piece of work which is a pivotal part of the course.

The department would like to pass on their heartfelt thanks to all the people who contributed to the Saints, Stones and Stories untold experience. A particular thanks to Gareth Kiddie for the organisation and recording of the many interviews that have taken place. Students have had a hands on experience of examining the finer details that have gone into the construction of the extension of St Illtyd’s Church and we hope to bring you the results of our work in the very near future.
