333. Aurangzeb (1658-1707 AD), Silver Rupee, Muhammadabad, 11.61 g, 24.28 mm, AH 1100, RY 33. To which place does this Muhammadabad refer to is not known exactly but Dr. Shailender Bhandare in a discussion on a social media platform has opined that Muhammadabad alias Banaras is a strong contender. He commented that once Bidar was renamed Zafarabad by Aurangzeb in 1656, the name continued throughout his reign and the preceding name "Muhammadabad" appeared once again only in reign of Shah Alam Bahadur. Therefore, the Muhammadabad coins in the name of Aurangzeb are more likely to have been struck not at Bidar, but at another place. He further provided the reference of Rana Singh, from his book 'Banaras: the making of India's Heritage City', published 2009, which notes; "Inspite of his orders people, including Muslims, were going to Banaras for education. Immediately he issued orders to the Provincial Governors for the demolition of Hindu schools and temples. To prove their loyality and over-enthusiasm were razed the splendorous temples of Vishvanatha and Veni Madhava down, and mosques were constructed on their foundations using their remains; Aurangzeb got to know about this on 2nd Spetember 1669. In his zeal for crushing the religious places of the Hindus, Aurangzeb even tried to rename the city 'Muhammadabad', and coins were also issued bearing that name, but the name did not stick (Altekar 1947: 250)" . 418. Durrani, Mahmud Shah (1st Reign), Bahawalpur, Silver Nazarana Double Rupee, 23.13 g, 28.13 mm, AH1217, RY 1. Persian legend on the obverse reads, Sikka bar zar zad tawafiq Ilah, Khushru giti sitan Mahmud Shah, 1217 (= Struck coin on gold with the aid of God; the World-Conquering Cyrus, Mahmud Shah). The reverse is usual Mughal Julus-formula reading, Manus Maimanat-e-sanah 1 julus zarb Bahawalpur. These Nazarana Double Rupees were probably struck by the Nawab Amir Muhammad Bahawal Khan II (AD 1772-1809) of the Bahawalpur State, to pay Tribute (Nazr) to Mahmud Shah Durrani on the occasion of his 1st Coronation. Bahawalpur came early into contact with the British, the Political Mission under Mountstuart Elphinstone halted at Bahawalpur in December 1808 on its way to Peshawar. The Durrani Suzerainty over Bahawalpur, ceased with the fall of Mahmud Shah in 1818. The oblique milling on these rare coins, is a tribute to the influence of the British Indian coins on the Bahawalpur coins. However, the milling on these coins is quite coarse and seems to have been done by the mint staff by hand after the coins had left the dies having being struck.
