The Night Operation on the Passchendaele Ridge, 2Nd December 1917
Centre for First World War Studies A Moonlight Massacre: The Night Operation on the Passchendaele Ridge, 2nd December 1917 by Michael Stephen LoCicero Thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of History and Cultures College of Arts & Law June 2011 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract The Third Battle of Ypres was officially terminated by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig with the opening of the Battle of Cambrai on 20 November 1917. Nevertheless, a comparatively unknown set-piece attack – the only large-scale night operation carried out on the Flanders front during the campaign – was launched twelve days later on 2 December. This thesis, a necessary corrective to published campaign narratives of what has become popularly known as „Passchendaele‟, examines the course of events from the mid-November decision to sanction further offensive activity in the vicinity of Passchendaele village to the barren operational outcome that forced British GHQ to halt the attack within ten hours of Zero. A litany of unfortunate decisions and circumstances contributed to the profitless result. -

Best Practices in Rural Development Flanders – Belgium
Best practices in rural development Flanders – Belgium Nominated and winning projects Competition Prima Plattelandsproject 2010 Preface At the beginning of April 2010, the Prima Plattelandsproject competition was launched. In the frame of this competition the Flemish Rural Network went in search of the best rural projects and activities in Flanders, subsidized under the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 (RDP II). No fewer than 35 farmers or organisations submitted their candidacy. A total of 32 candidates were finally retained by the Flemish Rural Network. These were distributed as follows in function of the competition themes: - added value through cooperation: 15 candidates; - smart use of energy in agriculture and rural areas: 0 candidates; - care for nature and biodiversity: 8 candidates; - communication and education as an instrument: 6 candidates; - smart marketing strategies: 3 candidates. The provincial juries decided which of the submitted files could continue to the next round (up to 3 projects per theme per province). Then an international jury selected the five best candidates for each theme for the whole of Flanders. After that, everyone had the opportunity to vote for their favourite(s)on the www.ruraalnetwerk.be website. No less than 7300 valid votes were registered! The four winning projects were honoured on 14 January 2011 during an event at the Agriflanders agricultural fair. Picture: The four winning projects. Since all 18 projects can be considered “best practices”, this brochure gives an overview of the winning and the nominated projects by theme. The texts and photographs were provided by the applicants, unless otherwise indicated. Enjoy your read! Belgium Fruit-Auction Co-Operatives
RENCOM - Workpackage 4 - Belgian case studies: Fruit wholesales Page 1 The structuration of a free market: the case of fruit wholesales in Haspengouw1 In the Haspengouw area fruit farmers are united in co-operatives, which organise fruit wholesales and auctions. The co-operatives set up the entire infrastructure that allows for a transparent market: they guarantee the quality of the fruit; they make it quantifiable; they take care of logistics; and they set up the auctions. In line with actor-network-theory (ANT) the case illustrates the co-operation and networking that is needed between several actors in order to come to a seemingly natural situation, i.e. free trade. 1. Introduction: the fruit production in Haspengouw Geographical and political definitions of Haspengouw The definition of Haspengouw varies. Geographically, it refers to a large area of clay soil. It not only includes the south of the present Limburg province (Humid Haspengouw—area 8.4 on Figure 1 in annex) but also parts of the present provinces of Liège and Namur (Dry Haspengouw—area 8.5). The soil of Dry Haspengouw is a large bed of clay (15-20m) that rests on chalk; it is apt for agriculture. Humid Haspengouw is a bed (+ 2m) of loam that rests on clay; which makes it less apt for agriculture in general, but very apt for fruit growing (Comenius project 2004). Politically, Haspengouw once was a ‘gau’, the administrative unit in the Frankish empire. Until the eighteenth century Haspengouw used to be a county. It was part of the principality of Liege. In this text Haspengouw refers to the definition that is used by the Streekplatform Haspengouw, an organisation financed by the Flemish government and the European Commission (see Figure 2 in annex). -

Passchendaele Archives
Research workshop Passchendaele Archives This workshop is based on the "Passchendaele Archives", a project of the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 that tries to give the many names in the cemeteries and monuments a story and a face. To make a visit to CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery tangible for students, during this workshop they conduct their own research in the education room of the MMP1917 starting with a photo, name and date of death. They try to reconstruct and map what happened on the fatal day of “their” fallen soldier. After the workshop, students can find the grave or memorial of the soldier at CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery. They now possess a personal story behind the endless rows of names, in the cemetery. This bundle provides practical information about this educational package that enriches a classroom visit to the museum and Tyne Cot Cemetery. Content of this information bundle: - Connection with curricula – p. 1 - Practical information – p. 2 - The research workshop – p. 3 - Personal records – p. 5 - In the area – p. 8 Connection with curricula: The Passchendaele Archives research workshop and the accompanying educational package mainly focus on the following subjects: • History, in particular WWI (theme) • English (source material) The content of this package is consistent with multiple history program curricula. It places personal stories related to WWI in a wider context as the full educational package interfaces with ideas, imperialism, norms and values that were present in the wider 19th and early 20th century British Empire. In addition, mathematics and geography skills are also used the workshop, giving it a multidisciplinary approach.
