  • Peak Performance and Contract Inefficiency in the National Hockey League
PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Scott Winkler April 2013 PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Scott Winkler April 2013 Economics Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine what age National Hockey League (NHL) players have their best seasons and how this relates to their contract earnings. The hypothesis is that NHL players have their peak performance at age 27, which indicates that long-term contracts that exceed this age create inefficiency. The study will examine player productivity by taking 30 NHL players and evaluating their performance in the years leading up to age 27 as well as years that follow. Performance measures include average point production and the highest average ice-time per game. The study will also use two OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regressions where the dependent variables are average time on ice per game and capital hit, both good indicators of how valuable a player is to his team, as well as several statistical independent variables such as points, games played and most importantly age. By gaining knowledge of peak performance, NHL organizations could better manage their teams by limiting long-term contracts to players and as a result lessen the inefficiency that exists in the market. • The Psychological and Physiological Effects of the Stanley Cup Playoffs a Review of the Literature Joe Robinson
The Psychological and Physiological Effects of the Stanley Cup Playoffs A Review of the Literature Joe Robinson Abstract This review examines the influence of the Stanley Cup playoffs on both the players and fans of the National Hockey League. Canada’s most beloved pastime is beginning to gain widespread popularity in the United States. As a result, there has been extensive research into the sport’s psychological and physiological effects in the past few years. A recent sociological study determined that suicide rates in the Canadian province of Quebec can be influenced by the playoffs and its relationship to other factors, such as sex, age, and marital status. Other studies have analyzed the reasons for the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver. Expert opinions on this subject vary significantly. Psychology professor Ervin Staub believes the riots were the result of a decrease in testosterone levels of dejected male fans, who used “destructive means to regain their sense of effectiveness” (Alexander). Whereas author Bill Buford explained that the fans simply found it exciting to riot. Journalists have taken a different approach to examining the effects of the NHL playoffs, opting to report on player superstitions, such as playoff beards and jinxes associated with the Stanley Cup. Even fans have contributed to the research effort by providing a unique perspective on the psychological phenomenon known as the bandwagon effect. Medical professionals have researched the physical effects of the playoffs. A 2006 study by speech pathologist William Hodgetts concluded that fans who attend a single, three hour playoff game can potentially suffer serious hearing damage.

NHL lockout: Legal manoeuvres by league, union add twist to labour talks Quoting Keith P. Burkhardt December 14, 2012 A lawsuit filed in U.S. court, a charge of unfair labour practice and a potential dissolu- tion of the National Hockey League Players’ Association may have added interesting twists to the NHL’s three-month-old lockout on Friday, but none of the three neces- sarily mean the entire season will be lost. Reports the NHLPA was moving closer to filing a disclaimer of interest — dissolving the union for the purpose of filing antitrust lawsuits against the NHL in the U.S. — led to the NHL taking pre-emptive court action. Citing the earlier reports about the NHLPA, the league said it had filed a complaint in a federal court in New York to ask the court to affirm the legality of the lockout, while also filing an unfair labour prac- tice charge with the National Labor Relations Board. With the latter, the NHL alleges “that by threatening to ‘disclaim interest,’ the NHLPA has engaged in an unlawful subversion of the collective bargaining process and conduct that constitutes bad faith bargaining.” The rattling of legal sabers puts the two sides no closer to a deal, though. “The lawsuit is entirely expected,” said Keith Burkhardt, a labour lawyer with Toronto-based Sherrard Kuzz LLP. “They presumably have had the complaint written for some time and were just waiting for a news report giving them a sufficient basis to file the suit,” said Nathaniel Grow, an assistant professor at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.
