  • Ten #Nhlstats About the Washington Capitals, Who Are Headed to the Postseason for the Seventh Consecutive Season and 31St Time in Franchise History
Ten #NHLStats about the Washington Capitals, who are headed to the postseason for the seventh consecutive season and 31st time in franchise history. 1. Washington has reached the postseason for the 13th time in 14 seasons (since 2007-08), one of two clubs to do so in 2020-21 – the Pittsburgh Penguins have extended their active run to 15 straight postseason appearances. 2. The Capitals’ run of seven consecutive postseason appearances is the second-longest stretch in franchise history (14 straight trips from 1983 to 1996). It also is the second-longest active run in the NHL behind the Penguins (15; 2007–2021) and ahead of the Nashville Predators (6; 2015–2020) – Nashville can match Washington this season. 3. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, who between them have the Capitals records for career playoff goals, assists, points and games played, will extend their shared franchise benchmark for most years in the postseason (currently 12). They are two of 13 active players with at least 100 career playoff points, and one of five sets of current teammates on that list (also Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, PIT; David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron, BOS; Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, CHI; Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture, SJS). 4. Alex Ovechkin ranks 18th in NHL history with 69 career playoff goals, trailing only Patrick Marleau (72) among active players, and is among the top 50 in career playoff points (131; 44th). Ovechkin has scored at least four goals in 11 of his 12 previous postseason appearances, second to only Wayne Gretzky (12x) for the most such playoff performances.

  • Peak Performance and Contract Inefficiency in the National Hockey League
PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Scott Winkler April 2013 PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Scott Winkler April 2013 Economics Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine what age National Hockey League (NHL) players have their best seasons and how this relates to their contract earnings. The hypothesis is that NHL players have their peak performance at age 27, which indicates that long-term contracts that exceed this age create inefficiency. The study will examine player productivity by taking 30 NHL players and evaluating their performance in the years leading up to age 27 as well as years that follow. Performance measures include average point production and the highest average ice-time per game. The study will also use two OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regressions where the dependent variables are average time on ice per game and capital hit, both good indicators of how valuable a player is to his team, as well as several statistical independent variables such as points, games played and most importantly age. By gaining knowledge of peak performance, NHL organizations could better manage their teams by limiting long-term contracts to players and as a result lessen the inefficiency that exists in the market. • The Psychological and Physiological Effects of the Stanley Cup Playoffs a Review of the Literature Joe Robinson
The Psychological and Physiological Effects of the Stanley Cup Playoffs A Review of the Literature Joe Robinson Abstract This review examines the influence of the Stanley Cup playoffs on both the players and fans of the National Hockey League. Canada’s most beloved pastime is beginning to gain widespread popularity in the United States. As a result, there has been extensive research into the sport’s psychological and physiological effects in the past few years. A recent sociological study determined that suicide rates in the Canadian province of Quebec can be influenced by the playoffs and its relationship to other factors, such as sex, age, and marital status. Other studies have analyzed the reasons for the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver. Expert opinions on this subject vary significantly. Psychology professor Ervin Staub believes the riots were the result of a decrease in testosterone levels of dejected male fans, who used “destructive means to regain their sense of effectiveness” (Alexander). Whereas author Bill Buford explained that the fans simply found it exciting to riot. Journalists have taken a different approach to examining the effects of the NHL playoffs, opting to report on player superstitions, such as playoff beards and jinxes associated with the Stanley Cup. Even fans have contributed to the research effort by providing a unique perspective on the psychological phenomenon known as the bandwagon effect. Medical professionals have researched the physical effects of the playoffs. A 2006 study by speech pathologist William Hodgetts concluded that fans who attend a single, three hour playoff game can potentially suffer serious hearing damage.
