O b e r p r ie l e r Abstract: The genus Sinobirma Bryk 1944 (stat. nov. as a genus), which was de scribed as a subgenus of the Australian genus Opodiphthera Wallengren 1859 (Saturniinae, Saturniini), is not at all closely related to the Australasian complex of Saturniidae. In contrast, it is a member of the African group of genera related to Tagoropsis Felder 1874 (Saturniinae, Pseudapheliini), as evidenced by the imaginal habitus and the structure of the male genitalia. There is evidence that Sinobirma malaisei (Bryk 1944) comb, nov., the sole species in the genus, known only from the type locality in Yunnan, may be closely related to some species of Maltagorea Bouyer 1993 from Madagascar. Thus, it seems possible that Malta gorea is a paraphyletic assembly rather than a monophyletic genus. Possible rela tionships in the group of genera are discussed. Although the special appearance of the eggs of the species Phyllium philippinicum, which imitate plant seeds, has received attention in different taxonomic studies, the attachment capability of the eggs remains rather anecdotical. Weherein elucidate the specialized attachment mechanism of the eggs of this species and provide the first experimental approach to systematically characterize the functional properties of their adhesion by using different microscopy techniques and attachment force measurements on substrates with differing degrees of roughness and surface chemistry, as well as repetitive attachment/detachment cycles while under the influence of water contact. We found that a combination of folded exochorionic structures (pinnae) and a film of adhesive secretion contribute to attachment, which both respond to water. Adhesion is initiated by the glue, which becomes fluid through hydration, enabling adaption to the surface profile. Hierarchically structured pinnae support the spreading of the glue and reinforcement of the film. This combination aids the egg’s surface in adapting to the surface roughness, yet the attachment strength is additionally influenced by the egg’s surface chemistry, favoring hydrophilic substrates. -

Despite attacking at high densities, this species appears to be a secondary pest, and there is no evidence it carries harmful fungal pathogens. & Context Because the genus Agrilus Curtis includes significant forest pests, the association of a poorly known species, Agrilus macer LeConte, with unexplained sugarberry (Celtis laevigata Willd.) mortality in the southeastern USA is a cause for alarm. & Aims This study sought to investigate the distribution and biology of A. macer and determine whether the species is a primary cause of observed tree mortality. & Methods Through a series of studies and literature searches, we documented aspects of A. macer biology and distribution while focusing on egg-laying behavior and searching for fungal pathogens associated with oviposition sites. & Results A. macer appears to be widely distributed throughout the southern USA, but most records are from Texas and Louisiana. Egg mass densities up to 1.2 masses per 10 cm2 (equivalent to ~ 1.9 eggs per cm2) were observed on trunks, branches, and exposed roots of dying C. -

I’m Bart Coppens (24) from the Netherlands – a fervent breeder of moths and aspiring entomologist. In my home I breed over 50 species of moths (mainly Saturniidae) on yearly basis. My goal is to expand what started out as a hobby into something more scientific. It turns out the life cycle and biology of many Saturni- idae is poorly known or even unrecorded. By importing eggs and cocoons of rare and obscure species and breeding them in cap- tivity I am able to record undescribed larvae, host plants and the life history of several moth species – information that I publish on a scientific level. My ambition is also to gradually get into more difficult subjects such as the taxonomy, morphology and evolution and perhaps even the organic chemistry (in terms of defensive chemicals) of Saturniidae – but for now these subjects are still beyond my le- Bart with Graellsia isabella vel of comprehension, as relatively young person that has not yet completed a formal education. Pest Risk Assessment of the Importation Into the United States of Unprocessed Pinus Logs and Chips from Australia
United States Department of Pest Risk Assessment Agriculture Forest Service of the Importation into Forest Health Protection the United States of Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team Unprocessed Pinus Logs July 2006 and Chips from Australia FHTET 2006-06 Abstract The unmitigated pest risk potential for the importation of unprocessed logs and chips of species of Pinus (Pinus radiata, P. elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii, P. taeda L., and P. caribaea var. hondurensis, principally) from Australia into the United States was assessed by estimating the likelihood and consequences of introduction of representa- tive insects and pathogens of concern. Eleven individual pest risk assessments were prepared, nine dealing with insects and two with pathogens. The selected organisms were representative examples of insects and pathogens found on foliage, on the bark, in the bark, and in the wood of Pinus. Among the insects and pathogens assessed for logs as the commodity, high risk potentials were assigned to two introduced European bark beetles (Hylurgus ligniperda and Hylastes ater), the exotic bark anobiid (Ernobius mol- lis), ambrosia beetles (Platypus subgranosus, Amasa truncatus; Xyleborus perforans), an introduced wood wasp (Sirex noctilio), dampwood termite (Porotermes adamsoni), giant termite (Mastotermes darwiniensis), drywood termites (Neotermes insularis; Kalotermes rufi notum, K. banksiae; Ceratokalotermes spoliator; Glyptotermes tuberculatus; Bifi ditermes condonensis; Cryptotermes primus, C. brevis, C. domesticus, C. dudleyi, C. cynocepha- lus), and subterranean termites (Schedorhinotermes intermedius intermedius, S. i. actuosus, S. i. breinli, S. i. seclusus, S. reticulatus; Heterotermes ferox, H. paradoxus; Coptotermes acinaciformis, C. frenchi, C. lacteus, C. raffrayi; Microcerotermes boreus, M. distinctus, M. implicadus, M. nervosus, M. turneri; Nasutitermes exitiosis). -

Care guide Northern Emperor Moth Caterpillars, Syntherata escarlata These caterpillars are the larvae of the Northern Emperor Moth found in north-eastern Australia. The adults (moths) of this species are quite varied in colour ranging from brown, rusty-brown, orange, yellow and some even have streaks of pink. The larvae (caterpillars) are initially yellow/brown and covered in stiff hairs. The final instar caterpillars are bright green with a cream stripe along the flank, and have rows of red tubercules all sprouting short stiff hairs. They belong to the family Saturniidae which includes other well-known Australian species such as the Emperor Gum Moth (Opodiphthera eucalypti ) and the Hercules Moth ( Coscinocera Hercules ). This species has been recorded as feeding on a wide variety of plants. It is commonly found in north Queensland on Corkwood ( Melicope elleryana ). Once ready to pupate, the caterpillars create a silk cocoon (with silk produced from their mouth parts). The cocoon is brown and oval in shape, with a fibrous appearance. It is usually secured to a stem with a nearby leaf or two woven in to hide the cocoon. The pupation times can vary depending on temperature, however moths can emerge (eclose) around two weeks after producing the cocoon. Adult Northern Emperor Moths do not possess mouthparts and do not feed. As such they rely on energy stores built up during the larval stage and do not live long as adults. The sole purpose of the adult stage is to reproduce. Males have large feathery antennae which are used to detect the pheromones (airborne hormones) produced by females. -
