Stranger, will you please permit me to give you an introduction to a particu- lar friend of mine, little Billy. Little Billy and I had long been friends and had become so intimate that we were more like brothers than friends. Some brothers indeed do not stick to each other as closely as Billy and I did for w.e never quarreled and the worst that ever happened between us was a little growl which we soon got over. -

The Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)
THE SHETLAND SHEEPDOG (SHELTIE) UNIQUE ORIGIN: Shelties, as they are affectionately called, hail from the rugged Shetland Islands, which lie between Scotland and Norway. These islands are also home to the Shetland Ponies and Shetland Sheep, all diminutive animals. Shetland Sheepdogs were bred by crossing the Border Collie, the rough Collie, and various other breeds. By 1700, the Sheltie was completely developed. They were developed to herd the sheep flocks of the Shetland Islands, and also to protect them from birds of prey, such as eagles. You can still catch Shelties chasing birds. Today, the Sheltie is one of the most popular dogs in America. PERSONALITY: Shetland Sheepdogs are hardy, loyal, obedient, gentle, loving, and extremely trainable. They are incredibly intelligent, ranking 6th out of 132 different dog breeds according to Dr. Stanley Coren, an animal intelligence expert, which means that they understand new commands with less than 5 repetitions and obey first commands 95% of the time. This dog needs a job with plenty of exercise or else they might invent their own entertainment. They are also very in tune to their owner’s thoughts and moods. Shelties are devoted family pets and are especially fond of children. They love attention and love to learn. They thrive in an environment where they’re given playtime, training, and loving attention. They will love you in return tenfold. APPEARANCE: Shelties usually weigh between 12 to 18 pounds and stand approximately 12 to 15 inches tall. Their build is trim with a light frame. They are incredibly beautiful dogs and are known for their beautiful coat. -

St. Anthony of Padua Sunday, December 24, 2017 101 E Virginia Ave Effingham, IL 62401 217-347-7129 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA PARISH EFFINGHAM, ILLINOIS “And the Gift Goes On” Today we gather to conclude this Advent Season of preparation as Catholics for the coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ, the Word Made Flesh, and the “Good News” John was chosen to be the herald of. Are we prepared? Did you make a place for the Lord to “come again”. Will he find a warm heart that is receptive to such a heavenly gift? I love to shop for those I love. In past years I would do so and would find places that “WRAPPED”. This tradition is used with a couple of symbolic purposes. One is to keep those in suspense as to “what” is wrapped. Wrapped nicely symbolizes this is an important sharing rooted in fun, and also in love and respect for the relationship we share. Our family was the newspaper carrier for the city of Gillespie. We delivered over 1500 papers on Sundays. Well, my mom saved big bucks saving the left over papers not sold at the stores and using them, especially the Sunday color comics, for her wrapping. While many others may of thought “How Cheap”, we loved it, because it was “from MOM”. God the Father gave us His Son …… God the Son gave up His life on the Cross that we might be set free of our sin ……. Joseph and Mary gave up so much to say YES to the angel that sought them out to invite them to take Jesus as their Son, and our Savior. -
Dog” Looks Back at “God”: Unfixing Canis Familiaris in Kornél Mundruczó’S † Film Fehér Isten/White God (2014)
humanities Article Seeing Beings: “Dog” Looks Back at “God”: Unfixing Canis familiaris in Kornél Mundruczó’s † Film Fehér isten/White God (2014) Lesley C. Pleasant Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures, University of Evansville, Evansville, IN 47714, USA; [email protected] † I have had to rely on the English subtitles of this film, since I do not speak Hungarian. I quote from the film in English, since the version to which I have had access does not give the option of Hungarian subtitles. Received: 6 July 2017; Accepted: 13 October 2017; Published: 1 November 2017 Abstract: Kornél Mundruczó’s film Fehér isten/White God (2014) portrays the human decreed options of mixed breed, abandoned dogs in the streets of Budapest in order to encourage its viewers to rethink their relationship with dogs particularly and animals in general in their own lives. By defamiliarizing the familiar ways humans gaze at dogs, White God models the empathetic gaze between species as a potential way out of the dead end of indifference and the impasse of anthropocentric sympathy toward less hierarchical, co-created urban animal publics. Keywords: animality; dogs; film; White God; empathy 1. Introduction Fehér isten/White God (2014) is not the first film use mixed breed canine actors who were saved from shelters1. The Benji films starred mixed breed rescued shelter dogs (McLean 2014, p. 7). Nor is it unique in using 250 real screen dogs instead of computer generated canines. Disney’s 1996 101 Dalmations starred around 230 Dalmation puppies and 20 adult Dalmations (McLean 2014, p. 20). It is also certainly not the only film with animal protagonists to highlight Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody # 2 in its soundtrack. -
Come-Home Collies (A Tribute to Albert Payson Terhune)
COME‐HOME By Ted Slupik There’s no better example of “coming home” than Albert Payson Terhune’s love of his Sunnybank home and his beloved collies. Lad, Terhune’s first famous collie, was devoted to his owner, was a “come‐home” dog. Allowed to romp freely on the grounds of Sunnybank and trained to break loose, he always came home. Most dogs are fairly capable of finding their way home within a three mile radius. Lad and some of his mates always came back to “The Place” at Sunnybank. Lad (the world’s first famous collie) and Lady (Lad’s mate) had only one descendant named Wolf who was killed saving a stray dog on a railroad track. The event was witnessed by many people and was printed as front page news. This helped to contribute to the legend of Terhune’s dogs. Another of Terhune’s more famous collies was Bruce, a dog imported from England that continued the Sunnybank heritage line. Lad’s place in the house was in the music room on a cool floor under the piano. He could watch who was coming up the drive as well as the residents of the house. He was the house and guard dog and was the only dog allowed inside. Lad was the hero of the book, Lad, a Dog, with his master and mistress secondary characters. As you read the book, you are drawn into almost playing the part of these unnamed characters. It seems logical that Terhune, loving his home as much as he did, started a business that kept him there. -
