Syracuse University SURFACE Dissertations - ALL SURFACE August 2017 SCHOOLED: Hiphop Composition at the Predominantly White University Tessa Rose Brown Syracuse University Follow this and additional works at: https://surface.syr.edu/etd Part of the Arts and Humanities Commons Recommended Citation Brown, Tessa Rose, "SCHOOLED: Hiphop Composition at the Predominantly White University" (2017). Dissertations - ALL. 764. https://surface.syr.edu/etd/764 This Dissertation is brought to you for free and open access by the SURFACE at SURFACE. It has been accepted for inclusion in Dissertations - ALL by an authorized administrator of SURFACE. For more information, please contact [email protected]. ABSTRACT This dissertation asks what hiphop is doing in predominantly white higher-educational contexts, specifically in composition classrooms. Using ethnographic, autoethnographic, and historical methods, it finds that hiphop’s work in composition classrooms at PWIs is contradictory. This mixed-methods investigation suggests that the contradictory relation of white fans, students, and institutions to hiphop is shaped on the one hand by white listeners’ increasing identification with the historical struggles of African Americans under capitalism, and on the other hand, by disidentification or abjectification of African Americans in an effort to “win” the zero-sum game of capitalism. This contradiction results in a paradoxical situation where white fans—and white institutions—love hiphop and yet harbor antiblack views about the Black communities and Black students who make hiphop possible. However, the findings also suggest that identifying this tension offers writing instructors an opportunity to be more explicit about working towards anti-racist goals in the hiphop composition classroom. The dissertation’s historical study, ethnographic and autoethnographic studies, and review of contemporary hiphop and composition scholarship suggest that teaching and practicing reflexivity are core solutions to the paradoxical rhetorical action of hiphop in predominantly white spaces.

Arizona State University From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaNot to be confused with University of Arizona. Arizona State University (commonly referred to as ASU or Arizona State) is a public flagship metropolitan research university[8] located on five campuses across the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area,[9][10] and four regional learning centers throughout Arizona. The 2016 university ratings by U.S. News & World Report rank ASU No. 1 among the Most Innovative Schools in America.[11] ASU is the largest public university by enrollment in the U.S.[12] It has approximately 82,060 students enrolled in the year 2014 including 66,309 undergraduate and 15,751 graduate students.[13] ASU's charter, approved by the board of regents in 2014, is based on the "New American University" model created by ASU President Crow. It defines ASU as "a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but rather by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves." ASU is classified as a research university with very high research activity (RU/VH) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Since 2005 ASU has been ranked among the top research universities, public and private, in the U.S. based on research output, innovation, development, research expenditures, number of awarded patents and awarded research grant proposals. The Center for Measuring University Performance currently ranks ASU 31st among top U.S. public research universities.[14] ASU was classified as a Research I institute in 1994, making it one of the newest major research universities (public or private) in the nation.[15][16][17] Students compete in 25 varsity sports.[18][19][20] The Arizona State Sun Devils are members of the Pac-12 Conference and have won 23 NCAA championships.

  • Los Angeles Times
Los Angeles Times Kate Spade, whose handbags were essential accessories for urban women, dies at 55 By ADAM TSCHORN JUN 05, 2018 | 6:40 PM Looking for a pursuit — and a purse — that could hold her attention, Kate Brosnahan left her job at Mademoiselle magazine, cashed out her 401(k) and started making mock-up designs out of paper cutouts and Scotch tape with the help of her boyfriend. In 1993, armed with a handful of boxy but stylish totes and a brand name that came from melding her first name with her then-boyfriend’s last name, the Kate Spade bag made its debut in an accessories show booth at New York’s Javits Center. According to an oft-repeated story about the brand’s origins, the night before her second accessories show she ripped the logo tags out of the sample bags’ interiors and sewed them on the outside in an effort to make her wares stand out. It worked, and helped propel a simple assortment of boxy $155 nylon totes into a multimillion-dollar, multi-category lifestyle brand that included footwear, apparel, stationery, fragrance, small leather goods and home goods sold in stores around the globe. Her boyfriend, Andy Spade, became her business partner, and when they wed in 1994, the brand name became her name. More than a decade divorced from the brand that came to symbolize accessible luxury for a generation of young women in the 1990s, Kate Spade was found dead at her Manhattan home Tuesday at age 55. She reportedly committed suicide by hanging, police officials said.
