INVESTIGATING THE REASONS WOMEN WEAR CHOKER NECKLACES by HEATHER ANN WILLIQUETTE B.A., University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 2015 A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Psychology 2019 ii This thesis for the Master of Arts degree by Heather Ann Williquette has been approved for the Department of Psychology by Laith Al-Shawaf, Chair Michael A. Kisley Michelle J. Escasa-Dorne Date 7-31-2019 iii Williquette, Heather Ann (M.A., Psychology) Investigating the Reasons Women Wear Choker Necklaces Thesis directed by Assistant Professor Laith Al-Shawaf ABSTRACT Choker necklaces have been around for centuries, carrying with them different cultural and societal connotations. However, little to no research investigates the reasons why women continue to wear choker necklaces today. Three studies were conducted in an attempt to explain why women may choose to wear choker necklaces. The first study (N = 204) examined women’s self-reports pertaining to her physical appearance and behaviors, and men’s perceptions of a woman in a photo on various measures. For the photo evaluations, we manipulated three different photos of three different women to create two conditions of a woman either wearing a choker or not wearing a choker. Men were randomly assigned to one of these conditions and were asked to evaluate the photograph. Findings reveal that women who self-reported wearing chokers more frequently had higher sociosexual orientations than women who self-reported wearing chokers less frequently, and men perceived the woman in the Choker condition to have a higher sociosexual orientation than the woman in the Nonchoker condition. -

The '70S Jewelry Trends That Are Popular Again Today
The '70s Jewelry Trends That Are Popular Again Today By Kelsey Stewart Oct. 28, 2020 SHARE Whether you grew up in the '70s or live vicariously through your parents' stories of the era, looking back it feels like everything was so carefree — the lifestyle, the music, and certainly the fashion. In fact, many of the quirky trends born during the decade have paved the way for fashion today. And believe it or not, many of the '70s jewelry trends still hold a valuable spot in jewelry collections by designers alike. "The whole approach in the '70s embodied effortlessness," Libby Page, Senior Fashion Market Editor at Net-A-Porter, tells TZR. "From chains and lockets to oversized hoop earrings, it was all about feel good jewelry." Today, shoppers are returning to a more playful, individualized sensibility when it comes to adding to their own collections, trying out colorful stones, chunky chains, and even crystals with mystic qualities protecting health and mental clarity. Thea Miller, founder of DRU Jewelry, a label that builds on the trends of the '70s to create colorful, symbolic jewelry with an updated aesthetic, adds that women today are drawn to the era because it was a similar cultural moment. "Art and fashion are a reflection of society," she says. "Of course, we look to the '70s for inspiration. That decade represents freedom and revolution and that’s where we are now as a society." Teaching Skills with Children's Literature As Mentor Text Presented at TLA 2012
Teaching Skills with Children's Literature as Mentor Text Presented at TLA 2012 List compiled by: Michelle Faught, Aldine ISD, Sheri McDonald, Conroe ISD, Sally Rasch, Aldine ISD, Jessica Scheller, Aldine ISD. April 2012 2 Enhancing the Curriculum with Children’s Literature Children’s literature is valuable in the classroom for numerous instructional purposes across grade levels and subject areas. The purpose of this bibliography is to assist educators in selecting books for students or teachers that meet a variety of curriculum needs. In creating this handout, book titles have been listed under a skill category most representative of the picture book’s story line and the author’s strengths. Many times books will meet the requirements of additional objectives of subject areas. Summaries have been included to describe the stories, and often were taken directly from the CIP information. Please note that you may find some of these titles out of print or difficult to locate. The handout is a guide that will hopefully help all libraries/schools with current and/or dated collections. To assist in your lesson planning, a subjective rating system was given for each book: “A” for all ages, “Y for younger students, and “O” for older students. Choose books from the list that you will feel comfortable reading to your students. Remember that not every story time needs to be a teachable moment, so you may choose to use some of the books listed for pure enjoyment. The benefits of using children’s picture books in the instructional setting are endless. The interesting formats of children’s picture books can be an excellent source of information, help students to understand vocabulary words in different contest areas, motivate students to learn, and provide models for research and writing. -

Last Lullaby Saddle Up Saddle Up, Settle In Every story must begin And this one is tall but it’s true It starts as a quest To tell the tales of the west And how it ends well nobody knows but you Tell us a good one tonight While the fire’s burning bright ‘Bout mountains and rivers of gold Sing us a good one tonight Neath the moon’s silver light Full of tall tales and legends of old Hunker down, gather round Roll the blankets out on the ground As our shadows grow taller than trees There ain’t nothing for miles So the stories run wild And the songs can roam anywhere they please (Chorus) Move em out, move em in Every story has to end But some stay in your heart They go round and round They get lost and then found Because the end is just another place to start Don’t Fence Me In Oh give me land, lots of land under starry skies above Don’t fence me in Let me ride through the wide open country that I love Don’t fence me in Let me be myself in the evening breeze Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees Send me off forever but I ask you please Don’t fence me in Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle Underneath the western skies On my cayuse, let me wander over
