Moore A thesis Presented to the faculty of Towson University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Department of Humanities Towson University Towson, Maryland 21252 May, 2014 Abstract Between the Idea and the Reality Falls the Shadow: Varieties of Modernist Dystopia Jonathan Moore By tracing the literary heritage of dystopia from its inception in Joseph Hall and its modern development under Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Samuel Beckett, and Anthony Burgess, modern dystopia emerges as a distinct type of utopian literature. The literary environments created by these authors are constructed as intricate social commentaries that ridicule the foolishness of yearning for a leisurely existence in a world of industrial ideals. Modern dystopian narratives approach civilization differently yet predict similarly dismal limitations to autonomy, which focuses attention on the individual and the cultural crisis propagated by shattering conflicts in the modern era. During this era the imaginary nowhere of utopian fables was infected by pessimism and, as the modern era trundled forward, any hope for autonomous individuality contracted. Utopian ideals were invalidated by the oppressive nature of unbridled technology. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998). -

Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S. -

2019 Study Schedule for Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World AP Lit & Comp/Fulton Friday, March 29: Intro notes/discussion. Over the weekend, read chapters 1-2 (pp. 3-29). These two chapters, as well as chapter 3, provide basic exposition, describe the setting, and introduce some of the major characters. In your reading journal for chapters 1-2, make two columns. On the left, use your own words to write observations/descriptions of the aspects of setting and characters that you think are significant; on the right side, write down key words and phrases from the text (in quotation marks) that provide evidence of those observations/descriptions. Include the page number for each piece of directly quoted material. Due Monday. Monday, April 1: Share reading journal notes on exposition, including setting and characters. We will begin reading chapter 3 (pp. 30-56) in class, and you will need to finish it at home. Chapter 3 is a continuation of exposition, taken outdoors. Rising action begins when the students and the D.H.C. encounter Mustapha Mond. From this point onward, the omniscient narrator alternates bits of different scenes and conversations to show that they are occurring simultaneously. In your reading journal, decide on and write a title for each of the different conversations (how many are there??). Below each title, write a one to two sentence summary of that particular conversation. What is the purpose of juxtaposing these conversations in this way? Explain. Due Tuesday. -62- THE INDIVIDUALISM OF ORWELL'S THINKING Cleusa Vieira de Aguiar - UFMG - The polarisation between individual and social entrironment, from the viowpoint of an assertivo individualism, is one of the commonplaces of Orwell criticism. In its own terms it appears as a valuable and 'rugged individualism' , but more criticaily it can be seen as a limiting 'bourgeois indivi duali sm . Caudwell describes the essentially illusory nature of this mode of thought and the associated conception of freedom: "The bourgeois believes that liberty consists in absence of social organiaation; that liberty is a negative quality, a deprivation of existing obstacles to it; and not a positive quality, the reward of endeavour and wisdom. This belief is itself the result of bourgeois social .-o lations. As a result of it, the bourgeois intellectual is unconscious of the causaiity that makes his consciousness what it is... He refuses to see that his own limited liberty; the captivity of the worker, and ali the contradictions of developing bourgeois relations — pacifism, fascism, war, hate, cruclty, ... are bound in one net of causality, that each is influenced by each, and that thereForo it is fallacious to suppose a simple effort of the will of the free man, without knowledge of the -63- causes, will banish fascism, war and slumps ... we have shown that the individual is never free. He can only attain frcedom by social cooperation ... If, therefore, he wi alies to stop poverty, war, and misery, he must do it, not by passive resistance, but by using social relations. But in ordcr to use social relations he must understand them." This account both reminds us of Orwell's anarchist sympathies 4 and explains how in a particular historical situation an assertive individualism turns into a deterministic view of social forces and a pessimistic attitude to the possibility of social change. -

PARODY FOR THE PUBLIC SPHERE: THE DAILY SHOW’S NARRATIVE ON DEMOCRACY INACTION by KRISTEN MARIE HEFLIN (Under the Direction of Dwight E. Brooks) ABSTRACT Parody is a narrative device that twists the conventions of an original work to create a new and typically subversive form of the original. Literary critics have studied parody in written works, but parody on television has not been closely examined. This study uses narrative analysis to look at how parody operates in the television show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Findings indicate that parody functioned to tell three major narrative themes in the show: 1) The television news media is not fulfilling its role in society. 2) The political institutions of the United States are not fulfilling their role their role in society. 3) Intolerant ideologies place harmful limits on society. This study discusses how parody works in The Daily Show to produce these particular meanings, as well as, what these recurring narratives say about the show’s opinion of our American democracy and our public sphere. Orwell on Poland and Political Controversies of His Time
Orwell on Poland and Political Controversies of his Time Krystyna Wieszczek University of Southampton There could hardly be a more appropriate 20th-century British author to bring up for discussion under the theme of “conformity and controversy” than George Orwell. One of his well-known characteristics as an author and political commentator was that of striving to think independently and to boldly present his own conclusions to the public, irrespectively of how controversial they could be at the time. This paper will examine some of his texts that responded to specific issues concerning Poland during the turbulent period of Europe’s transition from war to post-war, in which his statements were not always compliant with those held by much of the British public or with the British censoring policy. It aims to discover more about how Orwell approached conformity and controversy surrounding some contentious problems of his time and, by doing so, also about their political contexts in both Britain and Poland. The texts taken into consideration include his responses to the Warsaw rising, the abduction and trial of sixteen Polish leaders by the Soviets, and the settlement of Polish refugees in Britain after the war. A Socialist’s Disappointment with the USSR Unappreciated at Home Orwell was one of few British left-wing intellectuals to question the government and left-wing press’s uncritical reception of Stalin’s politics in Britain well before the beginning of the cold war (the name of which he coined). His epiphany came during the Spanish civil war where he witnessed the insidious way in which a Soviet-sponsored communist organisation began eliminating fellow socialists, including members of the POUM1 in which Orwell had served, jeopardizing the whole socialist agenda only to gain more power. -

It is concluded that the positivism of North American sociology of literature ignores the historical specificity of contemporary literary forms. Part of the explanation for the perspective of Kenneth Burke and Hugh Duncan is shown to derive from partial elements of the epistemology of the Classical Greeks and Hegelianism. Similarly Luk;csr philosophy of literary criticism are shown to be modifications on a rigidly Marxist econoniic determinism as well as Hegelian idealism. ~ukgcs'concept of literary realism -- in contemporary society as those forms of the novel which portray the specific problems of individuals and classes and the resolution of social contradictions within the "totality of the movement of historyn-- is examined in relation to the pracesses of capitalist development in Europe. It is zrgued that literature provides more than nextensions of social realityv, as Burke and Duncan imply.
