  • Thelonious Monk: Life and Influences Thelonious Monk: Life and Influences
William Hanson Falk Seminar Spring 2008 Thelonious Monk: Life and Influences Thelonious Monk: Life and Influences Thelonious Monk was a prolific and monumental figure in modem jazz. He directly contributed to the evolution of bebop, as well as influenced the development of free jazz, and the contributed additions to the standard jazz repertoire. Monk branched out fiom his influences, including swing, gospel, blues, and classical to create a unique style of composition and performance. Monk more than any other major figure in bebop, was, and remains, an original1 Monk's life can be categorized into three periods: the early, the middle, and late period. Each period lasts roughly twenty years: from 1917- 1940,1940-1960, and from 1960-1982. In Monk's early period he toured the US playing gospel music, and found early influences in swing music like Duke Ellington. It wasn't until his middle period that Monk began to record and write his compositions, and in his late period he toured the world with other renowned musicians playing bebop. Thelonious Junior ~onl?was born October 10,191 7 in Rocky Mountain, North Carolina to Barbara Batts Monk and Thelonious Monk, Senior. Thelonious was the middle child, with an older sister, Marion born in 1915, and younger brother, Thomas born in 1919. Monk's birth certificate lists his father as an ice puller, and his mother as a household worker. Although both of his parents could read and write, they struggled to make enough to live on. In 1922 Thelonious' mother insisted that she take the family to New York to make a better living.

  • Round Midnight”
Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight” Selected Bibliography/Discography Michael McClimon M539 – Introduction to Music Bibliography Prof. Phil Ponella 28 April, 2010 1 Bibliography Aikin, Jim. “Two Views of ‘‘Round Midnight’: A Classic Tune Then and Now.” Keyboard 11 (April 1985): 36-42. This article contains one page of text and two transcriptions of “‘Round Midnight,” one by Monk (from Thelonious Himself, April 1957) and another recorded by Richie Beirach. The article is intended primarily for keyboardists interested in Monk's music, but contains some other useful information too. Aikin pays a lot of attention to the mood of the tune, and is careful to point out that Monk's unusual piano technique is not "careless or sloppy," as some have criticized. Most of the insight into the music is available elsewhere, but the article remains valuable for Tom Darter's transcription of Monk's solo. Bowen, José A. “The History of Remembered Innovation: Tradition and Its Role in the Relationship between Musical Works and Their Performances.” The Journal of Musicology 11, no. 2 (Spring 1993): 139-73. Bowen uses Monk’s “‘Round Midnight” as a case study in describing the fluid nature of a musical work. The work, he asserts, is not the score, but the many and varied performances of the work itself. He uses the history of Monk’s tune, first as recorded by Cootie Williams, and with later interpretations by Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, to illustrate that there is no strict requirement to constitute a musical work, but rather a set of family resemblances (following Wittgenstein).

  • Teacher's Curriculum for Thelonious Monk: Monk's Misterioso
Teacher's Curriculum for Thelonious Monk: Monk's Misterioso The AJW's mission is to perform for and with public school students in order to encourage their participation in band, orchestra, and choir programs; to uphold and promote the American jazz tradition; and to enhance quality of life for all ages through live performances employing area musicians and collaborations with nonprofit organizations and student ensembles in central Texas. This year's season is dedicated to pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, who wrote some of the most enduring standards in jazz. Workshop Logistics: You will be contacted by your workshop clinician about two weeks prior to your scheduled assembly. Ideally, workshops should take place during the assembly week. They are aimed at grade levels three and higher, with a budget of three class periods per campus. Classes may be combined, but a maximum of 50 students in the room at one time is preferred. Workshops are designed to take place in the music classroom. They are intended as an opportunity for some of your students to get acquainted with jazz concepts and history before the full group performs on your campus, but the workshop is not required for students to enjoy the assembly performance. Necessary Equipment: Our clinician will need a CD player, a TV/DVD combo with working remote, and a laptop or desktop with PowerPoint viewing capability from flash drive that we provide. Assembly Performance Logistics: The AJW will set up on the floor this year, if possible. The group is a quintet consisting of sax/flute, trombone, keyboard, bass, and drums.
