Joshua Miller’s amazing ability to extract the radiant gist from still inchoate thought has meant that I always left our meetings with a renewed sense of purpose. Issues of Modernism: Editorial Authority in Little Magazines of the Avant Guerre Raymond Tyler Babbie A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Brian Reed, Chair Leroy Searle Jeanne Heuving Program Authorized to Offer Degree: English © Copyright 2017 Raymond Tyler Babbie University of Washington Abstract Issues of Modernism: Editorial Authority in Little Magazines of the Avant Guerre Raymond Tyler Babbie Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Brian Reed, Professor Department of English Issues of Modernism draws from the rich archive of little magazines of the avant guerre in order to examine the editorial intervention that shaped the emergence of modernism in their pages. Beatrice Hastings of The New Age deployed modernist techniques both in her fiction and in her editorial practices, blurring the line between text and context in order to intervene forcefully in the aesthetic and political debates of her age, crucially in the ongoing debates over women’s suffrage. The first chapter follows her emergence as an experimental modernist writer and editor, showing how she intervened in the public sphere via pseudonyms and anonymous writing. When Roger Fry’s exhibition, Manet and the Post-Impressionists, became the scandal of the London art world in late 1910, she used the debate over its value as an impetus to write experimental fiction that self-consciously drew from post-impressionist techniques. She continued to develop and use these techniques through the following years. The second examines her career in 1913, during which she continued to develop her modernist fiction in counterpoint to her political interventions and satires. -

Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 This thesis explores the thematic and stylistic patterns across the previously unexplored fiction and non-fiction work of the modernist author Bryher. More precisely, this study focuses on Bryher's three autobiographical novels: Development (1920), Two Selves (1923) and West (1925), and the film criticism she published in the film journal Close Up (1927-1933) and her volume Film Problems of Soviet Russia (1929). Influenced by her experiences as a young woman at the turn of the twentieth century and World War I, Bryher formulated strong opinions on women's social status, education, and patriarchal society. These opinions and the style of prose that articulated these ideas in her novels translated into her film criticism and informed the author's understanding of the film medium and film art throughout the 1920s and 1930s. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com American publisher and writer Robert McAlmon made significant contributions to twentieth-century literature. As owner of Contact Editions, he was responsible for publishing such important modernist works as Gertrude Stein's The Making of Americans (1925), while in his own books of the 1920s, he treated controversial subjects in a straightforward manner. Most notably, in Distinguished Air: Grim Fairy Tales (1925) McAlmon recorded life in the gay subculture of Berlin with a frankness that was unequaled in the era. Compared to his stories, Christopher Isherwood's later and more famous tales of the city seem almost tame. Among expatriates in Paris during the 1920s, McAlmon was regarded as a writer of significant talent and potential. However, he never attained the financial success and critical acclaim that Ernest Hemingway and many of his other associates did. Commercial publishers were unwilling to distribute McAlmon's work, at least in part because of his honest treatment of queer sexuality. Compounding his professional difficulties, McAlmon conducted his personal interactions with the same bluntness that distinguished his written work, and he refused to pay homage to influential figures, who might have helped him to attain the acclaim he craved. By the time of his death, his early achievements had been forgotten. Background and Early Years The youngest in a family of ten children, Robert Menzies McAlmon was born on March 9, 1896 in Clifton, Kansas. His father, Reverend John Alexander McAlmon, was a conservative Presbyterian minister. -

Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 23 September 2016 3 Abstract This thesis analyses the work of the POOL group – Kenneth Macpherson, Bryher, H.D., and Robert Herring, with the addition of Muriel Rukeyser – in terms of the modernist realisms that were emerging in the context of the journals Close Up (1927-1933) and Life and Letters To-day (1935-1950). Starting from the premise that the modern age was concerned with representing new forms of reality, it is argued that writers’ invocations of ‘the real’ signal those points in modernism where meanings coalesce. The thesis has four chapters. The first three argue that the real was a central concept in Close Up: Macpherson and Bryher believed that films had the potential to capture ‘real’ psychology, and often expressed this through idiosyncratic psychoanalytic readings of cinema; while H.D. thought that film, like other artworks, could loosen the binds of a singular reality and allow access to multiple realities simultaneously. These ideas were articulated and reconfigured in their writings for both journals and their other works from the period.
