Mental strength triumphs in nail- biting finals Heroes: Ben Stokes (left) and Novak Djokovic (right) triumphed in tense matches on Sunday. Are mental powers in sport more exciting than physical skills? Cricketer Ben Stokes and Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic performed under crushing pressure to seize victories on Sunday. Sunday 14 July, 7pm. At Lord’s Cricket Ground in north London, the Cricket World Cup final is — unbelievably — tied. England and New Zealand must battle it out in the first-eversuper over in the sport’s history. England batsman Ben Stokes has pulled his team back from the brink of defeat. He is exhausted, physically and emotionally, but the expectations of a nation rest on his shoulders. The pressure is on. He has just six balls to score enough runs to secure England’s first- ever cricket World Cup title. Meanwhile, on the other side of London, at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, the longest men’s tennis final in the history of the tournament goes to a fifth set tie-break. At last, Novak Djokovic has three championship points to close out this epic battle. But the crowd is cheering the name of his opponent, Roger Federer. Both men prevail under immense psychological pressure. Later, Djokovic admits the match was the most “mentally demanding” of his career. “For me, at least, it’s a constant battle within, more than what happens outside,” he said. The Serbian player is known to practise meditation and yoga to reach a state of calm. These mental tricks helped him play his best tennis for almost five hours, despite the majority of the 15,000 crowd backing Federer.

The 16 teams have announced their squads, and warm-up games will provide a chance for teams to trial different line-ups. On Friday, South Africa and England will face each other in the first of two Twenty20 International fixtures. So who should the selectors pick? A new study published in the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation has provided an optimal team ordering algorithm consisting of three components: team selection, batting order and overs bowled. The research shows that an optimal Twenty20 line-up sometimes calls for non-traditional roles from players. International Journal of Advanced Science and Technology Vol. 29, No. 6s, (2020), pp. 3064 – 3073 ` Analysing the Factors Affecting Runs Scored by Batsmen in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 Siddhartho Das Symbiosis Institute of Business Management Pune; Symbiosis International (Deemed University) Pune [email protected] Abstract The ICC T20 World Cup[3] is an international tournament organised by the International Cricket Council. It is played among 16 teams. The top 10 teams are selected based on their ICC International T20 rankings up until a given deadline. The remaining teams are determined by a qualifying tournament, which is held just prior to the tournament. It comprises of associate nations. Most of these 6 teams have not been given Test match status. Up until now, the tournament has been held every two years. However, the next edition will take place in 2020. It will be hosted by Australia. For the first time, it will be held after a gap of four years. The tournament has been played 6 times so far. Only the West Indies, the current champions, has won the tournament multiple times. The first ever T20 World Cup took place in South Africa in 2007. It was won by India, who emerged victorious in a closely contested final against their arch rivals, Pakistan. This set the tone for further editions of this tournament and international T20 cricket in general. England were the hosts of the 2009 edition and it was won by Pakistan. The third edition took place in 2010 and was won by England. The fourth edition, held in 2012, was won by The West Indies.

SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 2016 SPORTS Explosive Windies face fearless England in finale KOLKATA: West Indies’ rag-tag army of short- format mercenaries will be hoping they have the weapons to overcome a fearless England in today’s World Twenty20 final as both sides target the honour of being the first to claim a second title in the tournament. For a group of players who nearly boycotted the event over a contractual dispute with their board, Darren Sammy and his troops have waltzed into the Kolkata final displaying all the Caribbean flair that has earned them global admiration. If Twenty20 cricket is essentially about power-hitting, no team does it better and more unabashedly than the West Indies. England have first-hand knowledge of that destructive potency, having been blown away by Chris Gayle’s 47-ball century in a Super 10 shellacking in Mumbai a fortnight ago. Revenge may be regarded as a dish best served cold but Eoin Morgan’s men would probably like nothing more than to exact it in the heat of a World Cup final.
