You might say that punk has played a pivotal role in my life. Needless to say, I have also seen a great deal of media misrepresentation over the years. I completely agree with Craig O’Hara’s perception when he states in his fine introduction to American punk rock, self-explanatorily entitled The Philosophy of Punk: More than Noise, that “Punk has been characterized as a self-destructive, violence oriented fad [...] which had no real significance.” (1999: 43.) He quotes Larry Zbach of Maximum RockNRoll, one of the better known international punk fanzines1, who speaks of “repeated media distortion” which has lead to a situation wherein “more and more people adopt the appearance of Punk [but] have less and less of an idea of its content.

  • Atom and His Package Possibly the Smallest Band on the List, Atom & His
Atom and His Package Possibly the smallest band on the list, Atom & his Package consists of Adam Goren (Atom) and his package (a Yamaha music sequencer) make funny punk songs utilising many of of the package's hundreds of instruments about the metric system, the lead singer of Judas Priest and what Jewish people do on Christmas. Now moved on to other projects, Atom will remain the person who told the world Anarchy Means That I Litter, The Palestinians Are Not the Same Thing as the Rebel Alliance Jackass, and If You Own The Washington Redskins, You're a ****. Ghost Mice With only two members in this folk/punk band their voices and their music can be heard along with such pride. This band is one of the greatest to come out of the scene because of their abrasive acoustic style. The band consists of a male guitarist (I don't know his name) and Hannah who plays the violin. They are successful and very well should be because it's hard to 99 when you have such little to work with. This band is off Plan It X records and they put on a fantastic show. Not only is the band one of the leaders of the new genre called folk/punk but I'm sure there is going to be very big things to come from them and it will always be from the heart. Defiance, Ohio Defiance, Ohio are perhaps one of the most compassionate and energetic leaders of the "folk/punk" movement. Their clever lyrics accompanied by fast, melodic, acoustic guitars make them very enjoyable to listen to.

  • Nina Simone's Triple-Play
Access Provided by Harvard University at 03/21/11 8:44PM GMT NINA SIMONE’S TRIPLE PLAY by Daphne A. Brooks Listen to the opening notes of Nina Simone’s remarkable 1957 debut album Little Girl Blue and one hears a performer asserting her intentions, throwing down the glove: the exuberant “motor running-running” (Dobie 232) trademark vocals, the playfully virtuosic dance of a pianist’s velocity that turns the tempo of a Duke Ellington classic inside out and breaks open the melody to mine the ironically pulsating energy, the propulsive beat of non-stop “indigo” heartbreak. As jazz critic Scott Yanow states in the liner notes to the album, Simone’s take on Ellington was one of many “unexpected” and “memorable” twists that introduced the artist to the world. “[R]ather than begin the [recording] with one of her more accessible vocals,” says Yanow, “Simone starts out with a surprisingly up tempo and abstract piano exploration of ‘Mood Indigo’ before her vocal makes the song a ELWPRUHUHFRJQL]DEOHµ <DQRZ ,WUHPDLQVWKHÀUVW SXEOLF UHFRUG LQJ RI1LQD6LPRQH·V FRXQWHULQWXLWLYHEULOOLDQFHDVDQDUWLVWZKRGHÀHGWKHFHQWHUUDQFLUFOHVLQWKHPDUJLQVDQG wove together “highbrow” and “lowbrow” forms to create an off-beat repertoire that was, some might argue, “emo” before “emo,” Afropunk, folk eclectic, jazz torch song magic.1 1RRQHFULWLFDODSSDUDWXVFDQVXVWDLQDVXIÀFLHQWUHDGLQJRI1LQD6LPRQHDQDUWLVWFHO- ebrated in part for having stylized a heterogeneous musical repertory of songs for nearly four decades. 5LI01E Examensarbete i litteraturvetenskap, master, 30 högskolepoäng Master’s thesis in comparative literature, 30 credits Oi! Oi! Oi? - en kulturkritisk studie av identitetsframställningen i Oi!-punken Författare: Björn Bradling Handledare: Piia Posti Examinator: Peter Forsgren Termin: HT15 Ämne: Litteraturvetenskap Nivå: Avancerad Kurskod: 5LI01E Abstract This master’s thesis suggests that Oi! - lyrically – gives voice to a youth community whose identity lies in everyday working class life. The identity in question is based upon class, gender, sexuality, nationality, and community awareness. As these are intertwined, the thesis shows a more complex genre than that of Matthew Worley’s “Oi! Oi! Oi!: Class, Locality, and British punk”. On the other hand, using the above categories - derived from the studies of Kathryn Woodward – allows this essay to detect a genre identity made from a distinct “the Same” and “the Other” – us and them, as described by Stuart Hall. The latter consists of members of the middle and upper classes along with all kinds of intellectuals. “The Same” is based upon a common belonging to the working class and its local communities, but also on nationhood. On the contrary, the male gender in general and the male sexuality in particular adds to the idea of Oi!´s “the Same”. In contrast to the idea of “the Same”, Stephen Greenblatt’s idea of dissonance works to explain cracks in the façade of Oi! as explained in the spatiotemporal discourse. Moreover, Oi!’s “the Same” is quite alike the subaltern of Antonio Gramsci. This concept suggests that the members of the proletariat are too unaware to be ideologically enlightened and therefore their culture expresses the way of working class life as it is, complete with eventual moral flaws.
