She supports high taxes and radical regulation that forced jobs out of your community and the crime policies have made you far, far less safe and the immigration policies that have strained local budgets and the trade deals like NAFTA, signed by her husband that have shipped your jobs to Mexico and other countries and she supports the education policies that deny your students choice, freedom and opportunity.” Trump concluded that Clinton is “the candidate of the past. 6 Quetta hospital bombing: Pakistan Taliban claim attack (1.03/3) A faction of the Pakistani Taliban has said it carried out a suicide bombing that killed at least 70 people at a hospital in the city of Quetta. The attacker targeted a crowd that had gathered as the body of a prominent lawyer murdered earlier on Monday, Bilal Kasi, was being brought in. Lawyers and journalists were among the dead. About 120 people were injured. The Taliban faction, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, said it was behind both the hospital attack and the killing of Mr Kasi. He was head of the Balochistan province bar association. He was shot while on his way to the court complex in Quetta. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar [The Party of Freedom Fighters] split from the Pakistani Taliban two years ago. It has claimed a number of major attacks, including a suicide bombing that killed more than 70 people - including many children - at a park during Easter celebrations this year. Balochistan, Palistan's poorest province, has long been plagued by insurgency. A number of people, including lawyers, have been murdered in Quetta in recent weeks. Mr Kasi had strongly condemned those attacks. He had announced a two- day boycott of court sessions in protest at the killing of a colleague last week. After the hospital blast, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and chief of army staff Gen Raheel Sharif both went to Quetta for talks with security officials. Mr Sharif expressed his "deep grief and anguish", adding: "No-one will be allowed to disturb the peace of the province. The people, policy and security forces in Balochistan have given sacrifices for the country. " The president of Pakistan's Supreme Court Bar Association, Syed Ali Zafa, called the assault "an attack on justice". The Pakistan Bar Council has announced a nationwide strike by lawyers on Tuesday. Those killed in the hospital attack were said to include Baz Muhammad Kakar, a predecessor of Mr Kasi as provincial bar president, and more than 30 other lawyers. Two journalists have also been identified among the dead - Shahzad Khan , a cameraman for Aaj TV, and Mehmood Khan , a cameraman for DawnNews. Lawyers in Lahore staged a demonstration to condemn the attack. Some journalists also protested, demanding protection for freedom of expression. 7 Beko tumble dryer model 'behind 20 fires' (1.02/3) A defective model of tumble dryer caused a house fire which killed a mother of two, a coroner has ruled. The same type of Beko dryer that led to Mishell Moloney's death was responsible for 20 other fires, Birmingham Coroner's Court heard. But none had the same defect thought to have caused the blaze that killed the 49-year-old in Rubery in February. Beko said the "risk of injury was low" in other incidents. Coroner Emma Brown recorded a narrative verdict. The company's director of quality, Andrew Mullen, was asked by the coroner why Beko had not decided to recall the 8kg DCS 85W model. He said: "We looked at the number of incidents against sales, the severity of the incidents and circumstances, and in all those assessments they were all incidents that happened within 10 or 20 minutes of the tumble dryer being used. "Nearly all those were when the tumble dryer was in unheated buildings such as a shed or outhouse. In those cases the risk of injury was low. " He added the model was discontinued last year "as part of a range change". Ms Moloney was discovered at her home in Coriander Close, Rubery, after relatives found window blinds blackened with soot and forced their way in. An investigation found the fire started in or around the area where the dryer's printed control board (PCB) was. The coroner said it was her conclusion the death was due to smoke inhalation from a fire caused by the tumble dryer in her kitchen and the source within the dryer was the PCB. But she said it was "not possible to identify the nature of the defect which caused the fire". Beko said "in virtually all cases" the identified cause of blazes traced to the model had been "the run capacitor" and never the PCB. Mr Mullen said a decision not to recall the model was taken after a risk assessment and consultation with trading standards. He revealed two smaller models (the 6kg and 7kg) had been recalled because of 100 incidents of reported faults with the capacitor, "within the first three months". After the hearing, Ms Moloney's daughter Jodie said: "My mum was quite simply the best mum my brother Joshua and I could have asked for. " The family's lawyer Paul Tapner, of Slater and Gordon, said the family "needs answers from the manufacturer". After the inquest, Mr Mullen said safety was its "highest priority" and the product involved "remains completely safe for use, meeting and exceeding all European standards".

Ex-mayor in Surigao Norte says she handles legal drugs as doctor SURIGAO CITY – Former mayor Jessie Aguilera of Alegria, Surigao del Norte, admits she regularly handles drugs— but not the kind that she has been accused of handling. Aguilera, a medical doctor, was named by President Duterte as a drug trafficking suspect, along with many others, on Sunday. She left politics when her term ended in 2007, but the President’s list identified her as a sitting town mayor. “I was extremely surprised why I was on that list, and I have no idea why on earth my name was dragged in this whole mess,” Aguilera told journalists when she visited the Caraga Region Police Office in Butuan City Monday . Aguilera is now the municipal health officer of neighboring Mainit town, also in Surigao del Norte. She said she has been dispensing drugs to various patients, and has been conducting medical missions as part of the town’s health programs. “I came here to clear my name because this is very terrifying for me. I’m now a town doctor who lives in peace and do my job as a public servant,” she said. She said she would be willing to undergo drug tests and lifestyle check to disprove the claim that she has been trading in illegal drugs. She also questioned the integrity of Duterte’s list, saying the President should validate it because a single mistake could “ruin people’s lives.” SFM

FVR to see old friends in Hong Kong FORMER President Fidel V. Ramos on Monday officially began his mission as special envoy to China with a trip to Hong Kong to break the ice with old Chinese friends in the hope of rekindling relations with the superpower country, which has been strained by the territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea. Ramos left on Monday afternoon for Hong Kong with former Interior Secretary Rafael Alunan III, veteran journalist Chito Sta. Romana, his grandson Sam Jones, and his wife and former first lady Amelita Ramos, who he said will be his caregiver throughout the five-day trip. In a press briefing prior to departure, Ramos described his trip as a “fishing expedition” to strengthen peace in the Asia-Pacific region and the first phase to renewing the friendship between the Philippines and China, after which formal bilateral talks could follow between government officials of the two countries. He said “no substantive matters” will really be talked about even as President Duterte instructed him to merely “renew our friendship with your friends from China.” Business interests The former President declined to identify his Chinese contacts but said that most of them, although not big investors, had business interests in the Philippines―mainly small ventures like making biscuits and televisions. He said some of them were retired from their government but they could help influence China’s leaders. Aside from holding dialogues, Ramos hinted at playing golf with his Chinese friends, who he said would be coming from various places in China like Haikou in Hainan province, Zhuhai in Guangdong and Shenzhen. Asked if he would bring up the favorable ruling of the United Nations arbitral court in July voiding China’s claim to almost all of the South China Sea, he replied: “I don’t know what my friends will bring up as a subject matter.” “But it is not for me to bring it up because that is not my mission. My mission is to rekindle [our] friendship,” he said. Ramos’ trip represented “the first concrete step” for both sides to engage and “could open a new chapter in settling disputes,” said China’s state news agency, Xinhua. “Ramos is probably the best choice for the job of breaking the ice, since he is a revered statesman widely respected in his own country and in Asia,” it added in a commentary.

2016 elections most credible, survey says NEARLY nine in 10 Filipinos found the May 9 election results believable, according to a Pulse Asia survey that showed a “generally positive assessment” of the polls. Also, virtually all Filipinos thought the elections were orderly, with the release of the poll results fast and no violence occurring in their localities. The survey, conducted on July 2-8, asked 1,200 adults to compare the 2016 and 2013 elections according to several bases or standards. It had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3 percentage points. Eighty-nine percent said the results of the last elections were believable, while 88 percent thought the same of the 2013 midterm elections. A slightly higher proportion, 93 percent, believed that voting at their place this time was orderly with no confusion, more than the 92 percent on the 2013 polls. For 92 percent of the respondents, the release of the election results was fast, while 86 percent believed this was so in 2013. There was no violence in their place during the elections, according to 95 percent; while 89 percent could say the same for 2013. Less vote-buying Those who said there was no vote-buying in their area went up from 59 percent in 2013 to 66 percent in 2016; while 83 percent said no cheating occurred, up from 82 percent in 2013. 14 Pacquiao backs death penalty in debut speech INVOKING God, the Bible and the Constitution, Sen. Manny Pacquiao on Monday addressed the Senate floor for the first time and called for the revival of the death penalty to reduce drug related crimes. In a speech that earned praise from his peers despite the divergence in opinion, Pacquiao underscored the urgency of reinstating the death penalty for convicted drug traffickers, calling the offense among “the most heinous” of crimes that destroys lives and families. “We need to clarify that from then until now, the Constitution never barred the imposition of the death penalty, especially in the eyes of God,” said Pacquiao. “The death penalty is lawful, moral and sanctioned governmental action. Having read the Bible on a regular basis, I am convinced that God is not just a God of mercy, but also a God of justice,” said the boxer and Christian preacher. Pacquiao quoted Bible passages in his 14-minute speech, citing how God exacts justice and even allows capital punishment to punish crime. He also cited the Constitution’s exception on the death penalty for heinous crimes. Pushing for one of President Duterte’s legislative priorities, Pacquiao’s Senate Bill No. 185 was the focus of his speech. ‘Kick the chair’ Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III asked Pacquiao what his preferred form of death was, pointing out that such should be explicit in his proposal. Pacquiao at first said what was important to him was to first reinstate it, but he later said he would go for either firing squad or hanging. “Sisipain lang po ‘yung upuan (We just have to kick the chair),” Pacquiao said, drawing laughter from the gallery. He later apologized when Sen. Francis Pangilinan raised this point, saying the death penalty was not a laughing matter. Sen. Joel Villanueva took the podium, saying that while he was open to reviving capital punishment, the rule of law must be bolstered.

Reds ignore Duterte warning on landmines, say he’s pandering to AFP DAVAO CITY – The Communist Party of the Philippines brushed aside the new ultimatum of President Duterte on the use of landmines, saying the President has been harping on the issue to satisfy the Armed Forces of the Philippines. “The CPP rejects the new ultimatum set by GRP (the Government of the Republic of the Philippines) President Duterte demanding an end to the NPA’s use of CDX landmines with a threat of ending peace negotiations with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP),” the group said in a statement on Monday . Duterte, in a visit to a military camp in the Visayas on Monday , warned the communist movement that he would withdraw his support to the peace process and recall the government panel if he heard another attack involving explosives, specifically landmines. “By setting such an ultimatum, after having yet to fulfill his own promise to release NDFP consultants and political prisoners, smacks of a poorly crafted deflectionary tactic, with the aim of blaming the revolutionary forces for the repeated postponement of peace talks,” the CPP said. The CPP said President Duterte’s position on the peace process has been changing since he started going around military camps. “Apparently, President Duterte’s mindset is becoming more and more militarized as he hops from one military camp to the next. As he surrounds himself daily with US-trained military officers and soldiers, it appears that he is more and more obsessed with ending the armed revolution through suppression,” the CPP said. It added that this would put a distance between the new administration and the ordinary people. “He is increasingly drawn away from the people and their urgent concerns over lack of jobs, low wages, landlessness, spiraling prices and growing desperation,” the CPP said. The CPP said it has been alarming that Duterte is continuing issuing threats of war allegedly ignoring the existing strength of the NPA. “He is showing himself to be more and more cantankerous, inventing one reason after another to attack the CPP and NPA instead of finding ways to push forward peace negotiations. He is daily becoming more bellicose, issuing threats of intensifying war, apparently oblivious over the failure of the AFP to stop the growth of the NPA in Mindanao and the rest of the country despite having deployed increasing number of troops against the NPA since 2011 under Oplan Bayanihan,” the CPP said. But the CPP also said Duterte has been making these statements to satisfy the military. “He issues one sensational but completely empty statement after another such as recruiting one million soldiers. He has resorted to personally bashing the revolutionaries without effect but to satisfy the base humor of his bestial AFP troops and their zealot officers,” the CPP said. Despite the recent challenges, the CPP claims that the communist movement is still eager and optimistic over the scheduled resumption of formal talks in Oslo on August 20 . “The CPP urges the Duterte regime to fulfill its promise and immediately order the release of all 22 NDFP consultants and around 550 political prisoners by withdrawing all the trumped-up charges against them. If he does so, the GRP president will succeed in boosting a hundredfold the confidence of the revolutionary forces that he is indeed a man of honor,” the CPP said. “He would also succeed in proving that his government is indeed different from the past regime which only used peace negotiations in the vain attempt to cause the surrender of the NPA,” the communist movement added. The CPP said the communist movement is still willing to work with Duterte in addressing the causes of the conflict. “The CPP and all revolutionary forces are ever ready to work with the Duterte regime to actively pursue talks to resolve the roots of the armed conflict through negotiations,” the CPP said. 17 Apple launches parenting-themed emojis No words can describe the joy, anxiousness, discomforts and twinges of motherhood. Today, an emoji app can allow mothers to express their emotions in mobile conversations. EmojiMom , an iOS app planned by Sarah Robinson, Hudson and Natalie Ralston, is dedicated to working and expectant mothers. Its release co- existed with Apple’s launching of 100 “gender-diverse” and catchy emojis. READ: Apple introduces women, water gun emojis It has a keyboard packed with 250 precisely illustrated parenting-themed emojis such as ultrasound image, a hassle mesh underwear, a potty- training baby, diapers and a mom pumping breast milk in an office restroom cubicle. According to Huffington Post, the three moms conceptualized the idea last year and was finally launched as an app last July 30. The idea began when Robinson experienced “parenting stress” with her infant son, Jack. “I was getting ready for work — one of my first days back from maternity leave — and my baby peed all over my work outfit,” Robinson recounted to the news site. “It was such a hilarious, frustrating, OK-I-might-break-down- and-cry kind of moment that I texted Hannah and Natalie about it and we all said, ‘Seriously, there ought to be an emoji to describe this feeling.'” Since then, the trio sought the expertise of developer Lauren Burke to make the plan brew into reality. In an interview with TODAY Parents, Robinson said that their ultimate desire is to make other mothers and pregnant women relate to their simple life struggles in a perky manner. “We want to make people laugh. And, make them feel understood,” Robinson narrated. EmojiMom is available on iOS app store at $1.99 (P93). It has Instagram and Facebook accounts as well. 18 New virtual and augmented reality applications on the rise as VR and AR shift to corporate, gaming As augmented reality (AR) usage for enterprise businesses continues its rise, it is likely that companies will need to prepare for a tidal wave of new enterprise applications as the industry shifts its focus to the corporate and gaming verticals. In a report by ABI research , both augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) devices are slated to flood the market with smart glasses for gaming forecast to grow by 82 per cent through 2021. Further, virtual reality is starting to see similar crossover into enterprise, with an 88 per cent CAGR through the same period, according to the research. "The use cases for AR in enterprise remain the primary drivers for the technology; though, it is worth noting that the consumer AR market opportunity is growing in presence," says Eric Abbruzzese, senior analyst for ABI Research. "Simplistic AR mobile gaming is setting the stage for more advanced AR gaming experiences. Similarly, the primarily gaming- centric VR market is seeing uptake in corporate and enterprise usage in applications such as simulation, training, and visualized content creation. " A combination of new hardware announcements and expanded content selection in both AR and VR are driving this shift in use case focus, the report suggests. Osterhout Design Group (ODG) showed off their new Project Horizon smart glasses display that offer a wide field of view; together with a partnership with OTOY, a consumer content push is coming from one of the leaders in enterprise smart glasses. In VR, HTC's Vive for Business push opens up a compelling entry into VR for corporate and enterprise usage. "These new combinations of hardware and software leads to a much more fluid relationship between AR and VR," concludes Sam Rosen, managing director and vice president at ABI Research. "The individual importance of AR for enterprise, and VR for consumers, cannot be understated, but with the potential for disruption on display, the limitations for these markets are far less constrictive than once thought. "

Twitter suspends fake Rio 2016 ‘Rule 40’ Olympic bot account Twitter has moved to remove a fake account which styled itself as a tool being used by Rio 2016 organisers to prevent non-sponsors from gate-crashing the event online. Rule 40 is meant to prevent anyone who is not a direct sponsor of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) or the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from tweeting or posting about the Olympics. The bot (@Official_Rule40) claimed to provide “automated alerts for infringement of Rio 2016 guidelines.” It appeared to be replying to almost anyone who used any Olympic-related hashtags including #Rio2016 and #TeamUSA with a generic message warning them that they were violating Games rules. Even the Pope and Donald Trump were not exempt from a ticking off, being warned: “You are in violation of Rio 2016 guidelines. Please refrain from using official Olympic related terms. #RioBot #Rule40.” Twitter has yet to comment on why the account has been suspended, but it’s likely to have been removed for pretending that it was associated with the official Games. Rule 40 has been relaxed in time for this year’s Olympics with non-official sponsors now able to use athletes in their marketing in the run up to and during the games. Rio 2016 bosses have separately banned unofficial media from using GIFs of the games online.

China warns of 'crucial juncture' over Hinkley delay Failing to go ahead with the Hinkley Point nuclear project could threaten China's relationship with Britain, its ambassador to the UK has warned. Writing in the Financial Times , Liu Xiaoming said the delay to approving the plant had brought the two countries to a "crucial historical juncture". He hinted that "mutual trust" could be in jeopardy if the UK Government decided not to approve the deal. China is expected to fund about a third of the £18bn project. Last month, the French company EDF, which is financing most of the Hinkley Point C in Somerset, decided to go ahead with the project. But in a surprise move the UK government said it wanted until early autumn to review the scheme. There have been reports that Prime Minister Theresa May's concerns about Chinese involvement in a UK nuclear power station were the primary reason for postponing the deal. Former Business Secretary Sir Vince Cable said that when he was in the Cabinet with the then home secretary, Mrs May had been unhappy with what she regarded as the Cameron government's "gung-ho" approach to doing deals with Beijing. Nick Timothy, Mrs May's chief of staff and a longtime adviser, has also previously expressed concerns about the Hinkley deal. Writing on the Conservativehome website , he said MI5 believed that Chinese intelligence services "continue to work against UK interests at home and abroad". In his opinion piece for the the FT, China's ambassador outlined what he believed were the benefits of a new nuclear power station in the UK and the strength of his country's expertise in the sector. In his conclusion, Mr Liu hailed the trading partnership between the UK and China, but added: "If Britain's openness is a condition for bilateral co- operation, then mutual trust is the very foundation on which this is built. "Right now, the China-UK relationship is at a crucial historical juncture. Mutual trust should be treasured even more. I hope the UK will keep its door open to China and that the British government will continue to support Hinkley Point — and come to a decision as soon as possible so that the project can proceed smoothly. But catches have declined markedly in recent decades as commercial fleets have expanded. However this new study says that climate warming and not overfishing is the real cause of the problem. Estimated to be the world's second-largest freshwater lake, Tanganyika is an important resource for the countries that border it: Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. As well fish from the lake providing up to 60% of the animal protein consumed in the region, it is also an important biodiversity hotspot. But there have been growing concerns about the impact of overfishing, land use change and changes in climate on this key ecosystem. In an attempt to understand what's happening, researchers have examined samples of sediment from the bottom of the lake. The chemical analysis of the cores and the fossils found there indicate that fish numbers have been dropping in parallel with a rise in global temperatures. The scientists say that in tropical lakes a warming of the waters reduce the mixing between the oxygenated top layer and the nutrient-rich layer at the bottom. This increasing stratification of the waters means fewer nutrients get to top, meaning less algae which means less food for fish. The authors conclude that sustained warming is associated with reduction in mixing in the lake, stagnation of algal production, and significant shrinking of the habitat of the lake's key bottom dwellers, such as molluscs and crustaceans. "Our idea was to look at the fish fossil record and to see when that decline actually started," said Prof Andrew Cohen from the University of Arizona, "If it happened before the start of the industrial fishing in the 1950s, you'd have strong evidence that the decline is not simply driven by this fishing activity and that's exactly what we found. " The scientists don't discount the impact of fishing over the past six decades. They recognise that there has been a significant increase in the 1990s as refugees from numerous regional conflicts poured into the areas around the lake. "Fishing in the lake is a Wild West activity, there are nominal controls but no teeth," said Prof Cohen. "Given the current trends of warming, the lake stratification will get stronger and the productivity will continue to be affected by that. The people in charge of these decisions need to be thinking about alternative livelihoods for people in the region. " Other researchers are alarmed about the future of the lake. One said: "We are sleepwalking into a disaster. " Others point to the fact that the in Europe and North America, a warming climate is increasing production in lakes. But the tropics are very different. "In tropical regions, the increased stratification is doing the reverse, at least in some lakes," said Prof John Smol from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. "Decreasing algal production means that the base of the food chain is being affected - and this can cascade though the food chain up to fish and organisms - like humans - who depend on these resources. " Besides the threat to food supplies and jobs, the impact of warming on the biodiversity of Lake Tanganyika is of great scientific concern as well. Prof Cohen argues that we should think of the lake as being as significant as some of the world's key hotspots. "Think about the Galapagos, and how iconic they are, Lake Tanganyika has probably 50 times more endemic species and nobody knows about it," he said. "It's coming to bite us in terms of really impacting livelihoods for people around the lake, and the fact they have so many unsettled people in the region. "These social and environmental trends are converging and I would say it's a really urgent issue to be aware of and start doing something about. " The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. Follow Matt on Twitter @mattmcgrathBBC and on Facebook .

Nearly 20 years after its founding, The Venetian rolls out its first TV spot The Venetian, one of Las Vegas’s premier resorts, has rolled out a quirky TV spot called ‘Come As You Are’ that plays up the anticipation of travelers before they embark on a vacation. According to The Venetian, this is the first time the hotel has aired a commercial since it was founded 17 years ago. The spot is part of a larger campaign that includes social media & print elements and aims to differentiate the hotel from other Vegas resorts by showing off the unique attributes of its guests rather than its amenities. The campaign was created by LA-based agency Zambezi and was directed by Autumn De Wilde, who has worked with brands including Prada and Keds. It was led by The Venetian’s chief marketing officer Lisa Marchese, who joined the resort earlier this year after spending five years in the top marketing role at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. According to the brand, the campaign was designed “not only celebrate the character of The Venetian Las Vegas’ guests and the excitement of travel, but also to tap into the changing definition of luxury.” Of the campaign, Marchese said: “Today’s luxury is defined by interesting and story worthy versus important and exclusive. The campaign embraces this trend of being likeable, inclusive and most importantly, interesting rather than self-important.” The spot, which features the song ‘Tintarella di Luna’ by Italian singer Mina, debuted during the opening ceremony of the Olympics last week in markets including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas and LA. It will continue to run throughout late October. Print ads will run in publications including Vanity Fair , Condé Nast Traveler and Food & Wine throughout the rest of the year.

Acer Aspire E 15 (2016) Laptop Review Michael Desjardin August 05, 2016 Premium notebooks have it easy—sleek, attractive- looking design, top-of-the- line hardware, and in most cases, extreme portability to boot. But, even though models like Apple's MacBooks are popular, the top shelf isn't within most folks' reach. The 2016 version of the Acer Aspire E 15 (also known as the Acer Aspire E5-575G-53VG, MSRP $549.99) doesn't have the sleek design, top-of-the- line construction, or portability of a luxury notebook, that's for sure. What it lacks in flashy engineering and classy materials, it makes up for in bang-for- your-buck performance. Related For around $550 (or $700 for a Core i7-powered model), you'll be treated to substantially better-than-average performance, a boatload of onboard memory, a flash-based solid state drive standard, stellar battery life, and a host of upgrade opportunities ensure a positive return on investment. Unfortunately, a couple of its flaws are hard to ignore; a washed-out display stares you in the face and a plasticky, think build nags you every time you transport it. But if you're strong-willed—and just strong enough to carry a nearly-5.3-pound laptop—the Aspire E 15 will serve you well. Acer may have cut some corners with the Aspire E 15, but it was sure to bolster areas that typical mid-range computers neglect. I'll touch on the E 15's sheer amount of value shortly, but for now, let's take a look at what we're working with. • Intel Core i5-6200U dual-core processor • 8GB DDR4 SDRAM • 15.6-inch 1920x1080 LED display • Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics processor with 2 GB GDDR5 RAM • 256GB M.2 SATA SSD • WiFi AC/Bluetooth • CD/DVD Multidrive (Reads/Burns DVDs and CDs) • 2,500mAh lithium-ion battery with up to 64W of power Our review unit is the $550 model with the above specsheet, but Acer also offers a version of the E 15 with a Core i7 processor. Given that every single version is equipped with an SSD, 8 GB RAM, discrete graphics, and even an optical drive, it's no wonder that this model frequently tops the Amazon charts. For its price, its performance is stellar. You won't be peeling out and burning rubber (so to speak) with the Acer Aspire E 15, but given its asking price, the performance it's capable of is nothing short of impressive. The E 15 is powered by Intel's Core i5 processor, this Acer will offer you plenty of performance. This particular i5 processor is the standard across the industry for mid-range laptops, found in everything from Dell's Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 lineup to Samsung's Notebook 13 series. You could conceivably spring for the Core i7-powered model of the E 15, but for $150 more, I personally deem the money to be better spent elsewhere. Your mileage, as the saying goes, may vary. For day-to-day multitasking, video streaming, and even memory-hogging app-usage (your Adobe Premieres and Photoshops, for instance), the Acer E 15 is a surprisingly capable contender. And if gaming is a priority for you, I've got good news and bad news. The good news is the E 15 is well- equipped to handle middle-of-the-road gaming, or even very demanding games (though you'll have to tick down the graphics a few notches). The laptop's GeForce 940MX card—which is backed up by 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory—can handle a fair amount of stress, meaning even newer games like Overwatch. It's not unheard of to find a laptop of this class with a decent graphics card, but it's not particularly common, either, especially when you're in as low of a price range as the E 15. You needn't worry about paltry battery life. What good would a huge laptop be if it didn't at least have huge battery life to back up its heft? The E 15's 2,500mAh-sized battery may seem small, but thanks to a good amount of wattage, the it put up huge numbers in our intensive PCMark8 Home battery test, averaging just under five hours of test time. Since PC Mark 8's battery test drains the battery faster than usual, everyday tasks, this doesn't mean you can expect only five hours of actual use per charge, but if you compare it to the three-hour result put forth by the 13-inch Samsung Notebook 9 (a laptop with a much higher price tag with the same basic Intel chip inside), you'll start to see how ahead-of-the-curve the E 15 actually resides. A spacious keyboard with feel-good keys I'm a sucker for a good keyboard, so my time clacking away on the E 15 has been a pleasant one. The keys themselves are adequately spaced (not a surprise for such a wide laptop) and there's a number pad on the right- hand side, which is always a welcome addition. The E 15's keyboard also passes my day-long test; its keys respond with the right amount of pressure for hours of comfortable typing. Backlighting—another feature that, across the marketplace, is missing in action more than it ought to be—is accounted for, too, so there's no need to worry about fumbling around in the dark for the right key. Flexibility in ports, flexibility in upgrades There's plenty of real estate on the outside of the E 15 for connectivity options, and Acer didn't waste any of it. Between three standard USB ports, a USB Type-C port, an HDMI port, you're good to go for pretty much everything. There's even an Ethernet port for wired 'net access, should you feel so inclined. Along front there's even a SD slot, which is great if you want to easily get photos from your DSLR. The real standout, obviously, is the inclusion of USB Type-C, which'll make for a nice cushion as the standard slowly becomes ubiquitous in the next few years. Speaking of future-proofing... Let's talk about RAM. The E 15 has two DDR4 memory slots, meaning its already-competitive 8GB of RAM can be upgraded all the way up to 32GB. Loosen three simple Philips-head screws, and you get access to those RAM slots, the standard M.2 SSD, and you'll even find a spot for a second SATA hard drive to live. It's this kind of upgradeability that has fallen out of favor in the era of seamless, uniform design and razer-thin build, and it's exactly what gives the E 15 a leg-up on some of the more expensive, higher-end laptops out there. Graceful, it is not. While I dig the look and feel of the E 15 (the plastic along the outside of the laptop features a crosshatched, woven-linen-type finish), the E 15 is an absolute beast of a computer. I know, I know—when it comes to 15-inch displays, anything is a beast. But at 1.2 inches tall, the E 15 is particularly chunky, and at 5.3 pounds, your shoulder will definitely be getting to know the strap on your messenger bag a little better in the coming years. If you see yourself traveling to-and-from work with your computer and you're even a little worried about the toll it might take on your back, you might want to get your hands on the E 15 in person before committing to it. The truth is, the E 15 is better suited to live on your desk most of the time—if you were hoping to tote this with you to and from Starbucks to work on your next great screenplay, there are other, better options. A lackluster display Perhaps it's because I spend my days staring at glowing rectangles, but one of the first observations I made about the Aspire E 15 is its dim, washed-out display, which has a habit of sucking the life out of photos, streaming video, and games. I might be better-equipped at picking up on these issues with my naked eye than everyday consumers, but the numbers don't lie—in our lab, the E 15's full-HD LED display maxed out at around 210 nits, which is below-average, even for its class. The colors, too, lack the saturation needed for a sharp, vivid viewing experience. As a result, streaming Netflix, for example, is best left for dimly- lit rooms; another reason to leave the E 15 on a desk at home. Ask yourself two questions: Can you find it in your heart to tolerate a relatively dim, washed-out display and a laptop whose size and weight are downright cumbersome at times? If you think you can put up with these two admittedly irksome drawbacks, the Aspire E 15 is ready to surpass your expectations without lightening your wallet too much. It'd be one thing if the E 15 was just a solid performer. More importantly, it's a solid performer for a phenomenal price, and one that'll even prove reliable for some gamers (or at least the ones who aren't looking to run current- generation titles at silky-smooth framerates). And we haven't even begun to factor in its impressive upgradeability, plentiful ports, and stellar battery life, which tip the scales even further. Honestly, I know I've already advised against splurging on the $150 Core i7 model, but the truth is you could go for it and still wind up on the winning end of the deal. For a little dose of perspective, consider the bestselling 13-inch MacBook Air , which also uses Intel's dual-core mobile Core-i chips. If you opt for the Core i7 MacBook Air (which also comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage), you can expect to pay around $1,349. That's a little less than double the cost of the Core i7 Aspire E 15, which can also be upgraded to 32GB of RAM, unlike the Mac. So, by my math, you're looking nearly $700 in Apple Design Tax left on the table. On top of that, the Acer gets a boost from the juiced-up performance of the Nvidia 940MX graphics chip. Still worried about the Acer E 15's size? It's big, bulky, and a real pain-in-the-neck to lug around, but lets face it— bargains like this are few and far between. If you're looking for some peace of mind to go with a $550 credit card transaction, look no further than the Acer Aspire E 15. 31 Federal Trade Commission setting stricter guildelines on paid celebrity posts that aren’t clear ads The Federal Trade Commission has cracked down on celebrities and Internet personalities who may be posting or promoting a brand or product but omitting the fact that they are being paid to endorse the content or product. According to a Bloomberg news article , the FTC is putting more pressure on advertisers to comply with its Ad Practices Division rather than allowing the practice of endorsing a product without saying so. Influential celebrities posting brand messages on their personal accounts may not be as authentic as it appears, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by the U. S. government. According to the article, the Federal Trade Commission is planning to get tougher on users who need to be clear when they're getting paid to promote something, and hashtags like #ad, #sp, #sponsored --common forms of identification-- are not always enough. The FTC is reportedly putting the onus on advertisers to make sure they comply, according to Michael Ostheimer , a deputy in the FTC’s Ad Practices Division who was quoted in the article. It's a move that could make the posts seem less authentic, reducing their impact. “We’ve been interested in deceptive endorsements for decades and this is a new way in which they are appearing,” said Ostheimer. “We believe consumers put stock in endorsements and we want to make sure they are not being deceived. " The article notes that companies have been spending marketing dollars on social media endorsements, and part of the motivation to do so is that reaching consumers, especially milllennials, is increasingly difficult because of television’s waning marketing power. Social media is where marketing dollars are headed with brands already spending more than $255m on influencer marketing every month just on Instagram according to the article. Some advertisers say influencer posts don’t deserve such careful disclosure, according to the article and some Instagram stars and YouTubers often only work with the brands that they genuinely like and use. Yet, the FTC states that in this case, a consumer should be informed in some way if the endorser is compensated at some level for promoting a brand. The FTC has already changed some practices in the industry by bringing recent lawsuits. “For a lot of years it was really really loose, and you could get away with a lot more,” Nick Cicero, the CEO of influencer marketing agency Delmondo, said. "Now he’s telling all of his clients to use the hashtag #ad. " The FTC has been speaking out with online webinars and guides, speeches and engaging trade associations according to the Bloomberg story. “We’re not calling up each individual ad agency,” Ostheimer said. It will also continue to go after the advertisers with legal action. While it hasn’t charged an influencer for deceptive advertising, it hasn’t ruled that out, the article notes.

Honda celebrates International Cat Day with bizarre cat choir spot While a number of brands have sent out a tweet or two to celebrate International Cat Day, Honda is going all out for the holiday this year with a “catvertising” campaign complete with a short video, GIFs and memes. Created by RPA, the campaign includes a 30-second video called ‘Meow is the Moment’ that features a number of cats who begin to sing a rendition of The Go-Go’s 1984 hit ‘Head over Heels’ when they lay eyes on the 2016 Honda CR-V. The social campaign is an extension of Honda’s summer clearance campaign, which is called ‘ Now is the Moment ,’ and will live on Honda’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr channels. According to the agency, “every kitten that came to set was a rescue, director Jared Eberhardt is a cat whisperer, our cat vocalists include a human voice actor, and we ironically couldn’t play the track on set or the cats would lose focus.” The campaign comes as cats continue to take the internet by storm. Last year, Pew found that 45 percent of people who post videos online are posting footage of a cat or other animal, while a separate study found that people who watch cat videos feel more energetic and positive afterwards. 33 Free Hulu now only available via newly launched Yahoo View In a quick and surprising turn of events, Hulu is no longer offering a free, ad-supported version of its platform. Rather, there will be a $7.99- per-month version with limited commercials and a no-ads version for $11.999 per month. For those still not willing to make a paid commitment to Hulu, the streaming service is partnering with Yahoo View, which launched today and will offer for free the last five episodes of ABC, NBC, FOX shows (eight days after original broadcast), shows from other networks, day-after clips, and full seasons of anime and Korean drama. Hulu choosing to discontinue a native version of its ad-free service, and the fact that even on Yahoo View the free episodes will be made available only eight days after the original broadcast, can partly be attributed to how unpredictable TV monetization has become. That, and the group of broadcasters who own Hulu – The Walt Disney Company, Comcast, 21st Century Fox, and Time Warner among them – have likely become tired of giving content away. The Yahoo View component of the announcement is interesting in that just as Twitter has entered into agreements with major sports leagues to livestream games and complement those games with the surrounding conversation on the platform, Yahoo will look to surface the Tumblr conversation about the show that’s playing. “As a TV junkie and Tumblr fan myself, I’m personally excited to have one place that brings together the best of free TV and Tumblr fandom,” said Jess Lee, Vice President of Lifestyles Product at Yahoo, “Yahoo View is our first step towards creating a powerful community TV-watching experience, but it’s really only the beginning.”

Hulu shuts down free streaming service as it expands distribution deal with Yahoo Hulu fans will have to say goodbye to free streaming, as the company switches over to a subscription only model. The platform says that it will phase out its free ad- supported offering over the next few weeks, which until now has allowed people to watch the most recent five episodes of several Fox, ABC, and NBC show for free. The news comes as the streaming service has inked a partnership with Yahoo around the launch of a new online video gateway dubbed Yahoo View. The portal will feature Hulu’s free content, as well as short video extras and posts from Tumblr. The deal cements the pair’s longstanding relationship which has seen Yahoo act as a distributor of Hulu content in the past. Hulu and Yahoo will split any ad revenue generated from the deal, with ads being sold by Hulu. While Yahoo will now have the status of ‘preferred partner,’ the deal isn’t exclusive and Hulu will still stream content on other platforms like Comcast, New York Magazine and People.com. The move comes less than a week after Time Warner announced that it is paying $583m to take a 10 per cent stake in Hulu , joining existing owners like Comcast, Disney and 21st Century Fox. Hulu now offers two subscription packages, one at $7.99 per-month with commercials and one at $11.99 per month without any ads.

Agencies need to shake up the creative process if they want to compete with their 'frenemies' The pressures on the modern day marketeer are exponentially greater than they were 15 years ago. Consumers are more questioning and demanding of brands, have less attention to give and seemingly more places to spend it. Most crucially at the same time as blocking overt marketing messages on the open web they are seemingly happy to give more and more attention, power and data to fewer and fewer closed platforms who control ever greater swathes of unblockable, native inventory. The response of brands has been to try and do more marketing, across more channels with less or the same amount of budget, desiring to do brave things but balanced with what they know- for the moment- works. But what have we as agencies done to respond to the massive increase in complexity and seeming status quo in budgets? We’ve rolled ourselves up into big networks that promise the best of everything, but are seemingly not very easy for our clients to work with, or we’ve run off and splintered ourselves into tiny fragments of specialism that add complexity to agency relationships and put added pressure on budgets. More broadly while we have become obsessed with giving each other awards for making 'products' or 'content' that rarely reach scale, we’re being broadsided by consultancies who sell pre-packaged efficiency models dressed up as innovation and digital transformation and media owners making their own content to distribute to their audiences with our client’s budgets. We are being slowly pushed from the centre of client relationships by all of the above and more and if we want to get that centre ground back we need to change some of our behaviours. I sound really pessimistic about the current state of the agency world, but actually the skills that can be found in abundance in great agencies and great agency people – razor sharp consumer understanding, transformative creative thinking and a bloody-minded tenacity to get things done – have never been more in demand. Refocusing ourselves around these crucial, core skills and acting like the nimble, quick witted businesses changers we know we can be, will help us co-exist and compete with our 'frenemies', aka the platforms, the consultancies and the media owners. Here are three things we could think about changing to regain the centre ground: Breaking the creative brief If it’s true that creativity can come from anywhere and that we can produce anything we want to – then we need, for the right briefs – to break our addiction to solving problems by expecting our creatives to do everything by themselves, armed only with a brief and lots of coffee and their great but very particular types of talent. The dreaded brainstorm might not be the answer but creative sessions that can help collide gut feel creativity with the tools of data and APIs – as well as the partners that can help us capitalize on them- need to become commonplace. It’s no surprise that the tech platforms and consultancies are hovering up agencies and individual talent to try and combine creativity and technology. We need to get there first, not just as one-offs that win Lions but as sustained ideas that generate new campaigns, products and even businesses. We need to own ideas not execution To get any form of cut through and effect we need to be as single-minded as ever about our creativity, at the same time though we need to be much more open and distributed in the ways we make our creativity real. Our true secret weapon against people with only one thing to sell should be our ability to put forward the right idea for the right client; regardless of it’s channel and form. Lots of agencies have this belief- we at Karmarama distilled this into our Good Works mantra- but we should shout louder about our role as the client’s trusted and neutral advisor. However we can only use that secret weapon if we truly embrace the power of partnerships and celebrate these partnerships as part of our agency DNA. Harnessing creativity for good If we can work out ways to harness the wisdom of our partners and collide the seeming oil and water of creativity and technology at scale, we can join the growing band of clients who believe that making money and doing good aren’t mutually exclusive. Whether it is devising campaigns that reward or promote progressive behavior, helping design products and services that can give back or just promoting the ways our clients want to give back, we as creative partners are ideally placed to make the pieces fit together. After all we are the only ones that really believe that creativity above all else will win. We just need to stay, or get back into, the driving seat- to prove it. Lawrence Weber is managing partner innovation at Karmarama, a member of the BIMA executive and chair of the IPA brand tech group.

How Shazam is approaching the challenge of advertising to such a rapid user flow It takes a user just a few seconds to identify a song in Shazam, then leave, making monetisation of user flow tricky. To offer a more attractive buy to advertisers, the music recognition service is looking at new ways to retain user attention. As an app which serves a very quick consumer need, Shazam faces a unique challenge in monetising its users. Now that AOL’s research has found video is going to be the biggest driver of revenue in 2016 , Shazam’s head of programmatic Shane Keane discusses which video formats resonate with a rapid user flow. Most of Shazam’s traffic comes from spontaneous usage, Keane said. The music discovery app has an average user flow of 45 seconds. This means getting advertisers on board, and consumers to watch video advertising, is “tricky”, Keane said. The app has historically held back on an overload of advertising. Looking at the app now, it runs banner ads and an occasional ad while users wait for results. Yet since its business model relies on digital sales and advertising to keep it afloat, the company is exploring new ways to monetise its users. The service is currently experimenting with short form video ad spots, similar in length to six-second Vines, that are created for mobile. Keane said advertisers have requested 60-second spots but “that is insane” with such a rapid user flow. What’s more, while roughly 90 per cent of publishers say they get 25 per cent of their traffic from social referrals , Keane admitted Shazam is “not very advanced” on pushing users to its app or unique content via social means. The app serves a specific user need that doesn’t necessarily require social marketing. It’s call-to-action is music over a campaign. In light of this, the company is playing to its expertise; putting brand placements on TV ads that have Shazamable songs, as well as launching ‘Visual Shazam’; scannable tags on in-store packaging, print and outdoor ads. In March, Shazam teamed up with Coca Cola to give consumers the chance to scan the brand’s ‘Share a Coke and a Song’ cans and record a short ‘lip- sync’ video that could be shared on social. The service has also been using beacon technology to allow users to examine nearby areas and get content based on what is surrounding them. These can be distributed at events to provide sponsors with a second screen, or even on transport (Shazam offered London commuters the chance to Shazam the trailer for Kung Fu Panda 3 via beacons on 200-plus buses in March ). To bring all of its offerings under one umbrella, Shazam launched an initiative called ‘Shazam for Brands’ in April , that formalises its ad opportunities and gives advertisers new ways to work with the service. For example, Shazam can offer brands the chance to align themselves with potential up-and-coming artists by using its predictive analytics to determine which songs are likely to become popular in the near future. It can also measure “the effectiveness of a brand’s message through analysis of behavioral patterns,” the company said.

What the latest listening figures tell us about the fortunes of commercial radio's recent arrivals These are the first Rajars we’ve had since stations were launched on the second national multiplex back in March, making them a very interesting set of figures. Whilst none are yet matching the likes of the now- established digital stations such as Absolute 80s, Kisstory and BBC 6 Music for reach and hours, the increased level of choice has helped to push the weekly reach of commercial radio back above that of the BBC. The national commercial stations clearly outperformed local and BBC radio over the last 12 months, with a 9 per cent increase in listening hours. Interest in news coverage surrounding the referendum has almost certainly had an influence on the news-focused stations with LBC, BBC Radio 4 and BBC 5 Live all achieving increased levels of reach year-on-year and the three stations gaining more listening hours (if you include BBC 4 Extra in Radio 4’s figures) than any other station over the course of the last year. Of those stations producing their first set of results, Bauer will be pleased with the additional 388,000 listeners that the Magic portfolio now reaches thanks to the introduction of Magic Chilled and Mellow Magic; although it would no doubt be preferable if these weren’t announced together with a 367,000 loss of reach over the last 12 months on its London station. For The Wireless Group, the major success story is clearly that of Virgin Radio with an initial weekly reach figure of 409,000 following its seven-and- a-half-year absence from the UK airwaves. Meanwhile, TalkSport 2 reached 285k listeners per week while talkRADIO reached 224,000. Success for these two is slightly tricky to judge; TalkSport 2 seems to be an overspill station for content that doesn’t fit on TalkSport (similar to BBC’s 5 Live Sports Extra). Indeed, in the last year-and-a-half, 5 Live Sports Extra’s listening hours have been as low as 1.4m per week and as high as 6.9m. For talkRADIO, on the other hand, the challenge is getting listeners to discover the station. Their wide range of subjects and characters may mean it’s not something that the average listener would easily stick with all day, as opposed to a station where the music takes centre stage and doesn’t vary heavily. However, it’s likely that once people begin to find presenters that they like, they could accrue more of a following. There’s definitely a gap in the market for more speech-based radio content in the UK as evidenced from the increased popularity of podcasts. Indeed, in the US, the top five most listened to shows are all speech-based. It’s also the format which is least likely to be affected by streaming services. However, the commitment and costs involved in running and producing 24/7 speech content may be what holds it back in the UK market. Ultimately, it’s important to remember that these are just the first set of figures for many of the stations. Even now, some of the first digital stations to launch are continuing to grow in reach, listening and hours. With the potential increased investment that will come with Newscorp’s purchase of The Wireless Group, it will be interesting to see what the future holds. Mike Wood is AV account manager at Carat

Watch The Last Test Of NASA's Mars Rocket In Slow Motion NASA has published incredible slow motion footage showing the final test of the rocket intended to take American astronauts to Mars in 2030. The footage shows the final test of the Space Launch System (SLS), and offers a spectacular view of the test- firing of a full-scale version of the solid rocket booster. NASA engineers and scientists used a special camera called the High Dynamic Range Stereo X (HiDyRS-X) to film the test. The SLS booster rocket in the footage was developed by the private space firm Orbital ATK. The actual test lasted for two minutes. America is currently better prepared to visit Mars than it was to visit the Moon in the 1960s, according to a study by NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The total costs of current plans to send Americans to Mars come out to roughly $35 billion spent by 2025 to arrive in 2030. Previous plans for a Mars mission proposed by former President George H. W. Bush in 1989 were projected to cost $400 billion in 1989 over 20 to 30 years. In comparison, the Apollo program which landed astronauts on the Moon would have cost roughly $170 billion , making cost estimates for current plans appear inexpensive in comparison. Despite the relatively cheap price, plans for SLS to carry astronauts to Mars have been repeatedly sabotaged by the Obama administration, which was accused of leaking information to the press about missions and has threatened to veto the projects. Funds intended to develop the SLS were diverted by Obama into global warming research . The space agency’s budget includes more than $2 billion for its Earth Science Mission Directorate for global warming science, which is specifically allocated to improve climate modeling, weather prediction and natural hazard mitigation. In comparison, NASA’s other functions, such as astrophysics and space technology, are only getting $781.5 and $826.7 million, respectively, in the budget proposal. 40 China Signaling It Can ‘Throw A Punch’ At Any Time China has been strengthening its presence in disputed waters on two separate fronts in order to demonstrate it will not be pushed aside. Since the ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague poked holes in China’s claims last month, China has taken a stubborn stance and has been using show-of-force tactics to reinforce its position. Chinese naval aviation forces, submarines, ships, and coast guard units took part in a live-fire drill in the East China Sea last Monday. This massive training exercise was designed to prepare troops for “an information technology-based war at sea.” The next day, Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan encouraged the military, police, and people to make “ substantial preparations for a war at sea ” to combat offshore security threats and safeguard national sovereignty. On Saturday, spokesman for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force Senior Colonel Shen Jinke revealed that during a recent series of aerial combat drills in the South China Sea, Chinese H-6K long-range bombers and Su-30 fighter jets, as well as airborne early warning aircraft, reconnaissance planes, and tankers, passed over the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal. In a related incident , China sent six coast guard vessels and 230 fishing ships into waters near the disputed Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Islands), triggering a protest from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. According to Japanese reports , a total of 14 Chinese coast guard ships, several of which were armed, have sailed through Japan’s contiguous zone since last Wednesday. Other reports indicated that 12 Chinese vessels were still there this morning. Japan also lodged a complaint with China over military surface radar and monitoring cameras spotted on China’s gas-drilling platforms in the East China Sea. This discovery further points to Chinese militarization at sea. Retired PLA Colonel Yue Gang said that while the majority of China’s forces are concentrating on the East China Sea, there is a need for China “to maintain a certain level of air power in the South China Sea,” reported the South China Morning Post. Yue argued that China needs to maintain a strong military presence in the region in order to show the world that China will defend its interests and has the ability to “throw a punch at any time.” Military commentator Ni Leixiong remarked that the naval and air operations demonstrate that China is prepared to handle conflicts on two separate fronts. He added that these moves were “also a message to Japan that China has the initiative to choose a battlefield at will.” Jin Canrong, an international relations professor at Renmin University, said, “The new move near the Diaoyus was a protest against Japan’s recent words and deeds.” Send tips to ryan@ dailycallernewsfoundation.org . 41 What makes a festival 'superfan'? Festivals in the UK are being bolstered by a band of dedicated superfans, according to new research. They attend more than four events a year, spending more money than the average fan. Due to the cost of tickets and camping, they're usually in their 30s, with an average income of £45,000. The survey , commissioned by ticketing website Eventbrite, had a small sample size (just 504 respondents), meaning its results may not be 100% accurate - but those hardcore fans definitely exist. "I've never thought of myself as a superfan, but me, my family and friends can attend four or more festivals a year," says Rob Henderson. "I thought this was quite normal. " He was immersed in music from a young age, attending local folk festivals with his dad. "But that wasn't camping out," he says. "It was just in pubs and things like that. Everyone had to be quiet and you weren't allowed to leave the room until the music finished - so I didn't really count that as a festival. "It was probably about 1995 in Reading when I was let off on my own to find out what I liked. " These days, that means smaller, boutique events, with a focus on drum and bass music. "I like nice little chilled-out festivals, where all the people get on and there's no trouble whatsoever. You don't seem to get that at the big festivals like V and Reading. " Fellow superfan David Burton says he spends more than £2,000 per year on tickets. He, too, prefers to avoid the bigger festivals, which "can seem too money-driven". He says some promoters "over-sell" their VIP tickets, to the point where the "premium VIP areas are still jammed solid with queues for the toilets". "Ramblin' Man seem to have the right idea, though, with a VIP area you can see the main stage from, staff wandering around buying drinks for you, and a size that means the acts aren't just ants in the distance. " Both Rob and David highlight the social aspects of attending festivals, with the opportunity to "catch up with mates you haven't seen for ages" almost as important as the music itself. Again, that's easier in a smaller venue. "At Download unless you've arranged to meet someone, randomly spotting them in such huge crowds is a challenge," says David. While these recurring visitors are the bedrock of the festival scene, this summer's economic uncertainty has unexpectedly bred a new generation of festival fan. "We're a family with two daughters, aged 12 and seven, who normally enjoy holidays in Egypt or Turkey," Justin Browning-Smith tells the BBC. "We've decided to stay in UK this year, principally because of recent terror attacks, and festivals will form a big part of our breaks. So far, we've been to Newark Festival, British Summer Time [in Hyde Park] and have hired a motor home for Lakefest next weekend. " The family have been so enamoured with the experience that they're considering buying a motorhome and "trying to get to Glastonbury next year". Meanwhile, Rob has achieved superfan nirvana: Setting up his own festival. The Old Sawmill Garden Party takes place next month in a "secret location" between Leeds and Middleborough. Featuring dance music from the likes of Mini Da' Minx and The Asbo Disco, it grew out of a garden party he used to hold at his mum's house. "It started out with 20 people, and a couple of years down the line there's, like, three or four hundred people turning up. "My mum said: 'Look, we can't have 300 people in the back garden - so we got our own area at a few local festivals, and it's escalated from there. 43 Doug Meacham Unfair Johnny Manziel Criticism TCU offensive coordinator Doug Meacham apparently thinks that Johnny Manziel is responsible for the failures of his quarterback Kenny Hill. “It’s kind of unfair. You’re a young kid, you roll into a school where the Heisman Trophy winner is a guy that misses meetings and does whatever he wants to, and in your mind, you think, ‘Well, that’s just how you’re supposed to do it.’ So, I don’t think that helped him a whole lot,” Meacham told Sports On Earth. Hill previously played at Texas A&M before transferring to TCU. You can see it in the Trump rallies, where people I just know, in their living rooms, would be better people, are driven to the worst possibilities by the bloodlust in a crowd.” “It just gets ginned up and they’re outside of themselves,” she added. “They’re behaving as a larger unit, not just themselves.”

Punk Rock And An AK-47: How One American Died Fighting ISIS Jordan MacTaggart was once a frustrated 21-year-old rebel seeking purpose in his life, but after traveling to Syria to fight the Islamic State, he found a purpose worth dying for. MacTaggart was killed fighting with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) near the ISIS-held city of Manbij. The ongoing campaign is considered one of the most important ongoing battles in Syria, but it was not MacTaggart’s first firefight. Last year, a wounded MacTaggart was desperately taking cover behind a pile of rocks as ISIS fighters were firing on his position. With a bullet in his right thigh, running back to the YPG line was not an option. As a convoy of YPG vehicles came to pick up the wounded, it appeared that MacTaggart was saved. When they failed to see him, he recognized his fate. After the sun set on the Syrian desert, he began to record a cell phone video of his final goodbye to his friends, family and and fellow Kurdish fighters. “If I’m about to die, I just want to say… I don’t know,” said a bloodied MacTaggart in the recording. “If this is it, I don’t regret it. I did what I had to do. I believe in this… Don’t let it be in vain… It’s probably past 8 o’clock… One moment at a time. Don’t let the revolution die.” Despite his wounds and desperate position, MacTaggart would survive the night, eventually he was able to get to his feet and drag his wounded leg back to the YPG line. After spending months fighting with ISIS, MacTaggart would return to his native in October 2015. He returned to normal civilian life, but admitted in an article for Boulder Weekly that he pined for the battlefield. “I could live like that (war) forever,” MacTaggart told Boulder Weekly’s Nicole McNulty in December. “If you provide me housing, food and water and all I have to do is not get shot and kill those guys, I’ll do that for the rest of my life. I’m totally OK with this. It’s so much better. I’ll shit in a hole and throw up on myself.” The path of a warrior was a far cry from MacTaggart’s former life as a radical leftist kid from Castle Rock, Colorado. As a teenager, he once sported a 14-inch mohawk, combat boots, and a bandana tied around his neck. After dropping out of high school and going through a self-destructive period of “insanity” riddled with drug use, MacTaggart realized he needed direction. He had never shown a particular interest in war or the military, but after researching the YPG and its mission, he decided to to join the fight against ISIS. American YPG volunteer Jordan MacTaggart killed in Manbij campaign against ISIS few days ago pic.twitter.com/x0SWyT69Ny https://t.co/tWcjj3UYF4 — journal (@ese_journalist) August 7, 2016 MacTaggart was a far cry from the typical soldier. When he first arrived for training in northern Iraq, he still wore his gauged earrings. YPG comrades would call him “jin,” Kurdish for “woman,” as it is unusual for men to wear earrings in Kurdish culture. “Every other day I woke up and I had to go to work, but it wasn’t a purpose. I woke up and didn’t want to get out of bed,” MacTaggart told McNulty. “[In Syria] I woke up and was like, ‘I can’t wait to be bored and suffer because at least I’m doing something.’ Even though it was as bad as it was, it felt right. I liked it. I being out there. It’s such a break from all this.” An eager MacTaggart would eventually make his way back to Syria in January 2016 for his second combat tour with the YPG. He took to Facebook just days before leaving asking friends for a good place to buy parts for his AK-47 assault rifle, the standard weapon for Kurdish militia groups. “This time when I go back, I don’t know how long I’ll be there,” he told Boulder Weekly. “Like, six months was nothing. I could be there for years. I don’t give a shit.” Mitchell Scott, one of MacTaggart’s fellow volunteers from Australia, took to Facebook to eulogize his fallen comrade. “He’s the greatest bloke you’ll ever meet,” said Scott in a video posted to MacTaggart’s Facebook profile. He described MacTaggart as a selfless, no-nonsense soldier who never complained about the depressing conditions in Syria, unlike many of his fellow volunteers. MacTaggart was a bold and complicated young man who passed away well before his time, but there is little doubt that he died with the purpose he sought in his life. 46 Venezuela Is The Worst Place In The World For Pets Don’t travel with a pet to Venezuela, because if something happens to it, you won’t be able to see a vet in the collapsing country. Venezuelan veterinarians are running low on sextuple vaccines, which are critical for dogs. The Venezuelan healthcare system is collapsing for human, too, according to Agencia EFE. Many pet owners are dependent upon the government for veterinary care through the Nevado Mission healthcare program. The government program is geared towards ensuring that pets owned by poor families as well as street dogs and cats get the proper level of care they need, regardless of their owners’ means. Maigualida Vargas, president of the Nevado Mission, told Agencia EFE, “Vaccines are imported into the country at costs probably affordable for private-sector veterinarians and for certain individuals, but not for buying in bulk, nor for animal shelters, nor for giving free shots.” Bartolome Marin, president of the Venezuelan College of Veterinarians, added that the overall illness rate for pets as well as the number of cases of pets giving people diseases has “undoubtedly” shot up as resources are running low nationwide. The government-run healthcare system is falling apart. Women are being forced to resort to sterilization surgery for family-planning since they are unable to purchase condoms or other forms of birth control. Oil-rich Venezuela has been forced to barter oil for pharmaceutical products with India due to low cash reserves while trying to have some medicine available for people in an increasingly dysfunctional and desperate medical system. 47 Grassley: Why Do Fugitives Live In Public Housing? Sen. Chuck Grassley wants to know why fugitives are living in federally-funded housing, which the Iowa Republican points out is a violation of the law. “It is essential that the federal government ensures the safety and security of public housing residents against fugitive felons and other such predators,” Grassley wrote to Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro Friday. More than 1,300 felony fugitives were found living in public housing in one HUD region in 2012, but local authorities refused to kick them out, The Daily Caller News Foundation exclusively reported July 26, 2016. Those residents were wanted for crimes ranging from felony theft to rape and murder. Grassley cited TheDCNF story in his letter to Castro. The HUD Inspector General (IG) report that unveiled the fugitives was unreleased because of “questions about the validity of the data,” IG spokesman Darryl Madden told TheDCNF, though he declined to provide specific details. Local public housing authorities (PHA) told IG investigators that “HUD had informed them that it was a PHA’s [sic] discretion as to whether or not to terminate the fugitive felons from the HUD funded program,” the report said. Grassley noted: “However, that is not necessarily true.” The senator and the IG both pointed to a federal law bars fugitives from living in tax-funded housing. Grassley said “Congress included a provision in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-193), which requires the immediate termination of any fugitive felons, as well as probation and parole violators in federally subsidized housing.” Local housing authorities were relying on a less-stringent federal regulation, rather than law to support their claim that they may allow fugitives to continue residing in publicly-funded homes, according to Grassley. “It is disconcerting that the regulation appears to ignore the mandate in the statute and that the IG’s office failed to release a copy of report to either the department or the general public,” Grassley wrote. Grassley asked Castro to provide the total number of fugitive felons living in public housing throughout the country, the justification for the lenient language in the federal regulation, how HUD will enforce the law, and what steps the department has taken to ensure tenants safety while felons occupy public housing. 50 Denver Police Study Racial Bias After calls from various minority groups, the Denver Police Department will now begin to collect race-based information about people when stopped, according to reports. The Denver Police Department will now collect information on the races of people that police stop in an effort to be more accountable, reports the Denver Post. Though the idea for racial accountability came years ago for Denver, the decision to postpone was justified on the basis of budgetary cost. “Officers need to know and citizens need to know how everyone’s actions are going to be held accountable. Without it, we can’t prove anything one way or the other. That does not benefit the transparency or the credibility of the department,” Police Chief Robert White told the Denver Post last week. Minority groups like Black Lives Matter, The Denver Justice Project, and the Colorado affiliates of the NAACP and the ACLU, called for Denver police to study racial bias. The groups said that African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans are stopped at higher rates than whites. “It’s important to take some steps toward transparency and keeping police officers accountable for their actions when engaging the community,” Sasha McGee, a co-leader with Black Lives Matter 5280, said . The Denver Police Department previously avoided calls from minority groups to study the races of people that police officers stop. The new policy change will be the first time in about 14 years that the department has attempted to study racial bias within itself. Stephanie O’Malley, the executive director of the Denver Department of Safety, previously did not agree with the idea of collecting racial data on people. Before, she said that asking people about their race would make the situation more tense. Now, she has changed her mind about the issue. “We will explore ways to meet expectations while considering the impact of acquiring personal information from residents during their interactions with police officers,” O’Malley said in a statement. 51 Taliban's New Commando Unit Is Freaking Out Afghanistan The Taliban’s new special forces unit is wreaking havoc against the U. S.-backed Afghan National Security Forces, The Associated Press reports. The unit’s name reportedly translates to “Danger Group” and demonstrates the Taliban’s adaptation to full-scale ground war against the Afghan Defense Forces. The Taliban is a traditionally insurgent force that relied heavily on indirect attacks on U. S. and Afghan forces during the U. S. combat mission that ended in 2014. The group is reportedly heading the offensive for Helmand’s capital city, Lashkar Gah. Helmand province is strategic heartland for the Taliban, and the U. S. heavily prioritized its pacification until 2014. Hundreds of U. S. marines and British forces died in Helmand province, and Lashkar Gah is one of the major commercial capitals of Afghanistan. The head of Helmand’s Provincial Council told AP, “The Taliban are now controlling 80 percent of Helmand.” The Deputy head of Helmand Provincial Council elaborated that the group is “very dangerous and very successful.” The head of Afghan army efforts in neighboring Kandahar province echoed this position, saying, “We can’t deny that the Taliban are now changing their techniques and this new group is part of their new approach and new tactics. They are well equipped and highly armed.” Reports further indicate the group is using night vision technology, erasing a significant competitive advantage U. S. and Afghan forces enjoyed over the primitive enemy. The night vision technology is used to mount sniper attacks on unsuspecting supply convoys, and has forced the Afghan forces to guard their already vulnerable supply lines. If the Taliban is able to capture Lashkar Gah, it will mark the second time since 2001 the Taliban have been able to seize a major Afghan city. In late September, 2015, the Taliban seized the Afghan city of Kunduz, marking one of its biggest battlefield achievements since the war began in 2001. Beyond Helmand province, the Taliban have made unprecedented gains against the Afghan government in 2015. President Barack Obama reversed his decision to withdraw most U. S. troops in Afghanistan, and has pledged to keep at least 8,400 troops in Afghanistan by the end of his presidency. The Afghan defense forces have been doing so poorly against the Taliban, Obama authorized more offensive rules of engagement in June, 2016. Since 2014, the U. S. has relied on training and advising Afghan defense forces against the Taliban. The Taliban has used this time to develop conventional ground capabilities. The Afghan Defense Forces have proven inept in combating structural problems like corruption and mass desertions. 52 Obama's Budget Director Considering New York Mayoral Bid Office of Management and Budget Director Shaun Donovan is reportedly considering challenging New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in the 2017 primary. An adviser to former Mayor Michael Bloomberg is leading the effort to get Donovan into office in the wake of de Blasio’s criticism of President Barrack Obama for being late on concentrating on income inequality , Politico first reported . Donovan, who also served as Obama’s Housing and Urban Development secretary and commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development under Bloomberg, could pose a major threat to de Blasio’s chances of retaining his position – especially with those two key endorsements, should he choose to run. De Blasio’s approval rating has slipped dramatically since he took office. The latest Quinnipiac poll shows just four out of 10 New Yorkers approve of his job performance. The survey shows while the mayor may not be popular among those residing in his city, he is still polling ahead of potential Democratic primary challengers, former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and City Comptroller Scott Stringer. De Blasio’s contentious relationship with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo could also pose a problem, as Donovan has worked closely with the governor in the past. As noted by Politico, the race would not be a shoo-in for Donovan as he has never held public office and, while he is a native New Yorker, hasn’t resided in the city for eight years. 55 Fairfax Mayor Resigns, Busted With Meth After an Aug. 4 drug bust allegedly invoving methamphetamines and sex workers, mayor of the City of Fairfax, Va. Richard Silverthorne said he will resign, effective Thursday. Silverthorne faces charges of felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor charges for possession of drug paraphernalia. The former charge could put the three term mayor in prison for years, but it will rest on the classification of Silverthorne’s actions, reports NBC Washington. “My faith in God and myself will get me through the biggest challenge of my life,” Silverthorne said in a statement to NBC4. “I ask that people keep me in their prayers.” Revelations about Silverthorne’s possible crimes are mirrored by a similar event when he served on city council, was caught abusing substances, and resigned after 18 years reportedly to enter drug rehab. Silverthorne’s future will hinge on whether or not the mayor participated in a drug deal. If he brought the meth with intent to trade it for sex, then the crime will be classified as a drug deal and Silverthorne will face considerable time in prison. If Silverthorne simply arranged for a sexual encounter and brought the meth without the expectation of receiving anything in return, the action is classified as an “accommodation” by the party supplying the drugs, reports The Washington Post. Silverthorne’s alleged suppliers Juan Jose Fernandez, 34, and Caustin Lee McLaughlin, 21, were also arrested during the sting operation. The City of Fairfax appointed Council Member Jeff Greenfield to serve as acting mayor until further notice. 56 Southern rail strike: Your rights Hundreds of thousands of Southern rail passengers face even more disruption this week, with five days of industrial action. It is thought to be the longest rail strike since the 1960s. The cause of the strike is relatively straightforward: Southern wants all its drivers - rather than the conductors - to operate the carriage doors. It believes that drivers can close the doors themselves by watching video cameras - as they already do in many cases. However the Rail Maritime and Transport union (RMT) believes there is a hidden agenda to cut jobs, which could endanger passengers' lives. So what are your rights as a passenger if you are caught up in the chaos? Southern says that 60% of its trains are operating as normal. You will only qualify for strike compensation if the service you need is on an affected route. Southern has provided a map of which routes are affected. However, all passengers can still claim compensation if their train arrives at its destination more than 30 minutes late. If your route is affected, you can make a claim if you decide not to travel, or if you are delayed by more than 30 minutes. You will be paid in vouchers, which are exchangeable for cash. This can be done at your local station, or by filling in the online claim form. Day ticket holders can get a full refund if they decide not to travel. Or, if they decide to go ahead with their journey, they can get compensation if their train is delayed by more than 30 minutes. Anyone who has bought a one-day travelcard can have it re-issued for a different day for free. Tickets issued for any day this week will also be valid on Saturday 13 August. Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express will all accept each other's tickets during the week. Passengers who are forced to make a longer journey can call the Oystercard helpline on 0343 222 1234, to apply for a refund. Any compensation will be subject to the daily Oystercard cap. Many companies have a stated policy on strike action. Some will expect workers to use other means to get to work. Others may require staff to work from home, or take a day's leave. Some policies state that workers need to contact a line manager by a specific time of day. If it is genuinely impossible for an employee to get to work, employers may find it difficult to dock pay. "If they suspect that an employee is taking a 'sickie', employers should avoid taking any knee-jerk action," says Aye Limbin-Glassey, employment law partner at Shakespeare Martineau. "Making accusations of this type without evidence could lead to claims of unfair or even constructive dismissal, particularly if the employee has been at the business for more than two years. Withholding pay in such circumstances could also lead to claims for unlawful deduction from wages. "

Brexit Watch: At-a-glance day-by-day summer briefing The UK voted to leave the European Union in a referendum on 23 June. Here's your daily summer briefing of the latest Brexit-related news... The UK public voted 52% to 48% to leave the European Union in June's referendum. During the campaign there were warnings from the Remain side about the economic impact of leaving, while the Leave side suggested the UK would be able to take back control of immigration and the £350m a week they said the UK sent to the EU. New Prime Minister Theresa May has said "Brexit means Brexit" - but no-one yet seems too sure what Brexit means. Will the UK stay as a member of the EU single market? Will EU nationals retain the right to live and work in the UK? What economic impact has the Brexit vote had? The main event: Scottish Secretary David Mundell has announced talks with key sectors in Scotland - including farming, oil and gas - on the impact of leaving the European Union. Mr Mundell said he wants to ensure Scottish interests are "at the heart" of Brexit negotiations. Last month First Minister Nicola Sturgeon detailed a number of areas she wants to protect as the process gets started, emphasising that a second referendum remains "highly likely". Mr Mundell has promised to work closely with her government. Also in the news: Flight bookings to the UK have jumped since June , driven by a sharp fall in the pound. The think tank Policy Exchange has recommended that every British citizen should be given a unique "person number" in a register of the national population to help ease fears over immigration in the wake of the referendum - but the Lib Dems have criticised the idea as "ID cards by the back door". And the TUC has issued a call for zero tolerance on racism in the workplace, saying firms should set up systems so workers could report discrimination or abuse. Financial news : UK consumer spending picked up in July, according to a survey from credit card company Visa UK which contrasts with other signs that Britons have become more cautious since the referendum. The latest business confidence survey from BDO showed optimism at a three-year low , but that the fall in sentiment after the Brexit vote was less than expected. Peter Hemington, of BDO LLP, said: "Brexit has compounded the continuing slowdown of the UK economy, but there is opportunity as well as challenge ahead for UK businesses. From the papers: The Times carries some comments by Iain Duncan Smith , who warns that Leave voters will not support a "Brexit-lite" option, and rubbishes the idea that the House of Lords could block activation of Article 50, the formal mechanism that will take Britain out of the EU. In the same paper, there's a report that Brexit Secretary David Davis is fighting to prevent his department being relocated from Downing Street to Whitehall, apparently believing it to be "too far from the centre of power". The Sun observes that the Queen's former communications secretary, James Roscoe, has been appointed an adviser to Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, and the Daily Mail features former minister Anna Soubry's opinion that the Remain campaign made a "terrible mistake" in not taking immigration concerns seriously enough. The Financial Times has a post- mortem of most pollsters' failure to accurately predict the outcome of the EU referendum, with several commentators of the view that polling companies may have got "caught up in the political zeitgeist". More reading: And finally... The Guardian has some fun with the meaning of Brexit, in a sketch by the creators of BBC sitcom Yes, Prime Minister, Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay, who imagine what their legendary civil servant Sir Humphrey would make of it all. "Just move all the paperwork from your in-tray to your out- tray," the wily Mandarin tells his boss. Problem solved. The main event: The Bank of England deputy governor, Ben Broadbent, told the BBC's Today programme there could be a further interest rate cut this year if the economy worsens, following Thursday's cut from 0.5% to 0.25%. Mr Broadbent said the Bank had acted after a series of surveys since the referendum on most aspects of the economy, including employment, the housing market and business confidence, which had turned down markedly. Also in the news: The referendum was also a point of conflict in last night's Labour leadership hustings , with challenger Owen Smith sticking to his promise of a second referendum and Jeremy Corbyn saying he accepted that the "majority of people, sadly, did vote to leave" the EU and the party "has to win those people back". IHS Markit's monthly jobs report suggests the number of people in the UK securing a permanent job has fallen for two months in a row , with participants citing uncertainty caused by Brexit, although the group which sponsors the survey predicted confidence could return to employers as the political situation stabilises. The chief executive of Renault-Nissan has told the BBC he is "reasonably optimistic" that the UK will be an important partner with the EU, despite its vote to leave. Financial news: The FTSE 100 has erased earlier gains to be flat at 6,741 - not helped by a 6% slide in RBS shares. That was after an earlier jump to its highest level in a year this morning as investors welcomed the Bank of England's new stimulus package. From the papers: The Financial Times is considering the consequences of yesterday's rate cut, saying that business is "split" over the decision - some industry representatives welcoming it and others predicting it won't have much impact. The Times looks at a poll by Ipsos MORI suggesting the French will be the "least sad" to see the UK leave the EU and that many Italians are planning to stop buying British goods. In the Guardian, there's a feature on the impact of the referendum on the Edinburgh festival , reporting some comedians have had to rewrite their acts as it would be "odd not to talk about Brexit". More reading: And finally... As part of The Sun's campaign to bring back the blue passport it has taken to the streets of London with a giant model of how it might look, reporting that it found "Brits only too happy to give the plan their stamp of approval". Should the British passport be blue? The main event: The Bank of England has cut UK interest rates for the first time since March 2009 from 0.5% to 0.25% - an historic low. It also launched two new schemes: one to buy £10bn of high-grade corporate bonds and another - potentially worth up to £100bn - to ensure banks keep lending even after the cut in interest rates. The Bank faced increasing pressure to act after recent poor economic data. The rate cut is intended to boost the UK economy in the wake of the country's vote to leave the EU - but some analysts see it as a "wasted gesture", saying the main shock from the Brexit vote is "political" and difficult to address through monetary policy. Also in the news: The National Trust is calling for an overhaul of agricultural subsidies after Brexit, saying farmers should only be paid public subsidies for managing the countryside in a wildlife-friendly way - an idea which has been given short shrift by the National Farmers' Union. Financial news: All eyes are on the Bank of England's decision to cut interest rates - which saw the value of the pound fall more than 1% against the dollar. The Bank has left its forecast for growth this year steady at 2% but 2017 brings a sharp downgrade to growth of just 0.8%, from a previous estimate of 2.3%. The Bank says the outlook has "weakened markedly" following the referendum vote. From the papers: The Guardian carries a warning that leaving the EU could "kill off" fruit and vegetable production if foreign workers are prevented from coming to the UK. The Financial Times reports pension funds are worried by a new round of quantitative easing, which is part of the steps announced by Bank of England to offset a slowdown in growth following the Brexit vote. An editorial in the Telegraph argues that UKIP needs to "face up to its responsibilities" and ensure the party is in a position to play an active role in the process by which the UK leaves the EU. And The Times' science correspondent sees tough decisions ahead for Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom, as the powers the UK will regain over farming could "make or break" agriculture. More reading: And finally... The Telegraph's energy editor Emily Gosden reported last month that officials are divided over how to pronounce the abbreviation of the new Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, with staff from what used to be BIS saying "bays" and those from DECC saying "bees". Now Matt Foster of Civil Service World has an update: the FDA union is pronouncing BEIS as "bays". Next task: how to pronounce the shorthand DfEEU (Department for Exiting the EU), or DExEU, as some are calling it. The main event: UKIP, which is looking for a new leader to succeed Nigel Farage, published a list of the candidates that are eligible to stand in the contest. There was immediate controversy after MEP Steven Woolfe, regarded as the frontrunner, was disqualified after he missed the deadline for submitting his application by 17 minutes. Contenders who are going forward after being vetted by UKIP's NEC are: MEPs Diane James, Jonathan Arnott and Bill Etheridge, councillor Lisa Duffy and former parliamentary candidates Elizabeth Jones and Phillip Broughton. Also in the news: Experts at the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford have been looking at the existing system for EU migrants applying for permanent residence in the UK to examine possible issues that could arise if it was altered following the Brexit vote. They suggest if all the three million European Economic Area (EEA) citizens living in the UK at the beginning of 2016 applied for permanent residence in the same year, this would amount to the equivalent of about 140 years of work at recent rates of processing. Financial news: Activity in the services sector saw its sharpest fall in seven years in July, according to the Markit/CIPS purchasing managers' index. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research is arguing the UK has a 50/50 chance of falling into recession within the next 18 months. The think tank says the country will go through a "marked economic slowdown" this year and next as a "short-term consequence" of the decision to leave the EU. However, its forecasts still suggest the UK will avoid recession, the economy growing by 1.7% in 2016 and 1% in 2017. The FTSE 100 opened at 6630.13 - down slightly on the previous day, but still close to its year high. Meanwhile, the pound was at 1.19 euros (its 52 week high is 1.43 euros, its post Brexit low was 1.16 euros). From the papers: The Guardian says charities fear Brexit will increase demand for their services but imperil their funding. According to the Daily Telegraph , as many as 2,000 farmers have been left in limbo after a string of multi-million grant schemes for the countryside were frozen after the Brexit vote. The Times reports that investors used fears over Brexit to withdraw £3.5bn from UK managed investment funds in June, dwarfing the worst month in the 2008 financial crisis. The Sun says Tory MPs and MEPs are rallying behind its campaign to axe the UK's burgundy passports and reinstate the previous British navy passport design. More reading: And finally... Brexit spelled the end of David Cameron's leadership but now the ex-prime minister appears to have suffered a further indignity - his waxwork image has been removed from display by Madame Tussauds in London. The figure will be kept in storage and will not be immediately replaced by Theresa May in front of its Downing Street display. A spokeswoman told the Mirror its policy was not to display figures of leaders that have not been elected by the public - although it may review this in future. The main event: The UK has a new European Commissioner following the resignation of Lord Hill of Oareford, who quit as financial services commissioner after the Brexit vote. Sir Julian King, a career civil servant and former ambassador to France, will spearhead EU co-operation on terrorism, organised crime and cyber-security. It's being seen as a higher- profile role than that which was expected to be conferred on the UK following the decision to leave the EU, and could give an indication of how the Commission sees the future of the UK's cooperation with EU member states. Also in the news: Theresa May's new cabinet subcommittee met to hold its first talks on how to strengthen the economy in light of the UK's vote to leave the EU. The prime minister has billed it as underlining the importance of "building on the strong fundamentals of the British economy and ensuring that everyone who works hard is able to enjoy wage growth, job security and opportunities to progress". The UK's net contribution to the EU rose last year to almost £200m a week, according to the Office for National Statistics. Financial news: The UK's construction industry suffered its sharpest downturn in seven years last month, according to a business survey that suggests the economy is at risk of recession after the Brexit vote. The Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) inched down to 45.9 in July from 46.0 in June - the lowest reading since June 2009 and some way below the 50 mark that divides growth from contraction. While better than all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists that pointed to a reading of 43.8, the figures - compiled after the referendum - show commercial construction dwindled and confidence flagged. From the papers: The Financial Times is predicting that pensions for British officials working in Brussels "are set to be one of the most poisonous parts of Brexit talks", pointing out the typical employee of the EU institutions is entitled to a pension of up to 70% of their basic salary. The Daily Mail has more on Monday's story about peers considering moves to delay Brexit, saying No 10 has "slapped down" the idea and the peer who made the suggestion "thinks she knows better than voters". Writing in the Telegraph , former Labour MP Alan Milburn describes the Brexit vote as "a demand from voters for more social mobility". The Guardian has a feature on the impact of the referendum on academic research , which includes the claim from one scientist that EU colleagues are "worried" about collaborating with their British counterparts. More reading: And finally... It was what some might have regarded as a side-issue in the referendum: the colour of passports. But The Sun has launched a campaign for the UK's official travel documents to revert from maroon to dark blue and lose the words "European Union". The Home Office has already said there are "no immediate plans" to make changes, but if the cause gathers momentum, ministers may have to nail their colours to the mast. The main event: The Sunday Times has published details of what it claims is David Cameron's resignation honours list - including prominent Remain campaigners such as Will Straw, head of Stronger In, Tory and Remain campaign donors Ian Taylor and Andrew Cook, and Cabinet ministers Philip Hammond, Michael Fallon, Patrick McLoughlin, and David Lidington. Outgoing UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the list amounted to "rewards for failure", but recently knighted Conservative MP Sir Desmond Swayne said it was right to recognise those who "deserve a little bit more of a thank you than their salary". Also in the news: A Conservative peer, Baroness Wheatcroft, has raised the idea that a cross-party coalition of Lords could delay or block Article 50 , the mechanism for leaving the EU, if Parliament is asked to approve it. And the BBC caught up with fishermen who were part of a pro-Brexit flotilla during the referendum campaign. Financial news: The UK's manufacturing sector activity fell in July , a survey by Markit/CIPS suggests. The measure of output and new orders fell below the 50 mark that denotes growth for the first time since early 2013. Some analysts have interpreted as evidence that the vote to leave the EU "has added to pressures on the sector", with others advising "it will take time to really understand" the true implications of the decision. Those manufacturing figures sent the pound down 0.2% to $1.32. It had been up 0.1% until the release of the index, and the measure is now at its lowest level since February 2013. From the papers: Several papers are looking ahead to the meeting of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee on 4 August, with The Guardian talking about a cut in interest rates to 0.25% in an attempt to offset uncertainty associated with the vote to leave the EU and The Financial Times predicting the Bank will downgrade its growth forecast. But The Daily Mail accuses experts of being "doom-mongers" who have "forgotten all the good news". More reading: And finally... European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker keeps a little black book of grudges , according to an article (in French) in Le Soir - and it even has a name, Little Maurice. But a spokesman for Mr Juncker today refused to divulge details to BBC political reporter Adam Fleming, saying: "You will have to ask him if the BBC is in it. " The main event: All eyes are on the surprise delay in the Hinkley Point C agreement, which is only Brexit-related insofar as the referendum ushered in a change of prime minister. Also in the news: Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways owner IAG, has played down the impact of the UK's vote to leave the EU, saying he firmly believed "business will settle down" in the wake of the referendum. That's despite BA and IAG reporting that currency movements cost it €148m (£124m) in the latest quarter of trading, mainly due to the weak pound. High-profile London estate agency Foxtons has announced a 42% fall in profits, blaming uncertainty around the EU referendum for the fall. Earlier this week the UK's biggest building society, the Nationwide, said that the Brexit effect on the property market and house prices could take months to become clear. Following a written question from Conservative Lord Blencathra asking if UK passports will be changed from maroon to blue and remove the words "European Union" from the cover, the Home Office has said "there are no immediate plans" to alter its appearance. Financial news: The FTSE 100 closed at 6,724 - up just 3 points, helped by strong trade in shares in financial companies. Growth in the eurozone slowed in the second quarter to 0.3%, official EU data showed on Friday, with analysts warning that the consequences of Brexit could harm the economy later in the year. From the papers: The Guardian reports Ford is considering closing factories and raising prices in the UK. The Financial Times gives top billing to its analysis that the referendum is creating a stark divide between "winners and losers", with exporters and producers of essentials seeing a lift, and importers and discretionary spending hit. The Daily Mail is critical of Lloyds' chief executive Antonio Horta Osario's warning that Brexit could slow growth - saying it was "entirely unconnected" to the job losses announced on Thursday. In the Telegraph, Allister Heath writes of the need to "energise our economy", recommending the halving of stamp duty, a green light to airport expansion and tax cuts for entrepreneurs. And in The Times , Ed Conway foresees a "Brexit lobbying boom", warning that it will take a "superhuman effort" not to let big business rule the roost. More reading: And finally... The Treasury has got a new cat - named Gladstone - to rival Larry, of No 10 Downing Street, and Palmerston, who is on mouse patrol at the Foreign Office. BuzzFeed News reports that the announcement of the latest feline enforcer was scheduled for immediately after the referendum but was pushed back after voters decided the UK should leave the EU. The main event: Theresa May embarked on the next leg of her European tour, taking in Bratislava and Warsaw. Her discussions with Slovakian counterpart Robert Fico and Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo are among the toughest she has had yet, given the priority attached by the two countries to maintaining free movement of labour between the EU and the UK. Since Poland joined the EU in 2004, hundred of thousands have moved to Britain, either temporarily or permanently, and Poles in the UK send back several billion pounds a year to their home country. Mrs May maintained any future deal would have to take into account "a clear message" from the Brexit vote over immigration control. Lloyds axes 3,000 jobs: Lloyds has announced it will cut 3,000 jobs and 200 branches - partly due to changes in the way people carry out their banking, but also in expectation of a "deceleration of growth" following the UK's decision to leave the EU. That sounds like it might be what some are calling a #Brexcuse - blaming bad news on the EU referendum result. Also in the news: Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is in Paris meeting French foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault. Relations between the two have not been exactly cordial so far, with Mr Ayrault criticising the appointment of his opposite number on the grounds he "lied" during the referendum campaign. Although the technicalities of the Brexit process are not officially part of Mr Johnson's portfolio - he said he hopes the UK will "be as close as possible to" France after the vote to leave the EU and that the two would work together "as friends and allies". Financial news: The FTSE 100 closed 0.4% lower at 6,721, hurt by a 4% fall in shares in Lloyds Banking Group. Lloyds' shares dipped with the news it is cutting jobs, partly in anticipation of slower growth after the Brexit vote, while Sky's shares were up 6%, with group chief executive Jeremy Darroch saying the Brexit vote "doesn't really change our thinking on any of our markets". The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says UK car production jumped more than 10% year-on-year in June, but warns future growth may be hit if the government does not maintain unrestricted access to the single market. One index of consumer confidence measured by YouGov for the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) sank nearly five points to 106.6 in July - matching its biggest fall in six years. YouGov said the "public is still absorbing" the EU referendum result but it is "clear that consumer confidence has taken a significant dive". From the papers: The Times warns against "self-fulfilling prophecies of doom" on the economy, pointing out that the picture going into Brexit was one of "unusually good health". Writing in the Telegraph , Ambrose Evans- Pritchard says the age of fiscal restraint is over, and governments in Europe and beyond are using Brexit as an "excuse" to let rip with stimulus measures. The Financial Times reports that European executives in the UK and EU-based British businesspeople are being offered "Brexit insurance" by the firm AIG. And the Daily Mail takes a dim view of the new lead Brexit negotiator for the European Commission Michel Barnier, calling him an "inflexible, anti-British, arch-federalist" whose appointment was "calculated to poison talks" with the UK. More reading: And finally... Boris Johnson addressed the French foreign ministry En Francais, and made a decent fist of it. That may stand him in good stead later on, since the Times reports that Michel Barnier "insists on conducting all his negotiations in French". Still, it could be worse. Paul Cambon, French ambassador in London 1898-1920, is described in Christopher Clark's book The Sleepwalkers: "[He] spoke not a word of English. During his meetings with [Foreign Secretary] Edward Grey (who spoke no French), he insisted every utterance be translated into French, including easily recognized words such as 'yes'. He firmly believed - like many members of the French elite - that French was the only language capable of articulating rational thought. " The main event: Prime Minister Theresa May has continued her series of meetings with other EU leaders, heading to Italy for talks with PM Matteo Renzi. There, she said she retained an "open mind" about the UK's trading relationships after Brexit amid reports some cabinet colleagues want the UK to pull out of the EU's customs union. Mr Renzi said the UK's vote to leave the EU was sad, but he hoped "some good would come of it". Mrs May's visit follows Downing Street talks on Tuesday with Enda Kenny and last week's meetings with Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande. EC names Brexit negotiator: Michel Barnier, a former French minister and ex-European Commission vice president, has been appointed as the commission's chief Brexit negotiator, by Jean-Claude Juncker. Mr Juncker said he wanted "an experienced politician for this difficult job". Mr Barnier will take up his position on 1 October. He will not necessarily be the European Union's chief negotiator as the European Council looks set to head-up negotiations, with Belgian diplomat Didier Seeuws leading their preparations, while the European Parliament will also seek to take the lead at some stages. Also in the news: MPs on the Home Affairs committee warn in a report that there could be a spike in migration ahead of Brexit. They call for the government to give an "effective cut-off date" after which EU citizens moving to the UK do not have the automatic right to stay. The "most obvious" cut-off dates they suggest include the referendum day itself - June 23 - the date when the UK triggers the two year Article 50 process of leaving the EU, which will be early 2017 at the earliest, or the date when the UK actually leaves the EU. Financial news: Lots today. The Office for National Statistics released economic growth figures for the second quarter of the year. They show that growth was 0.6% , higher than 0.4% in the first quarter, and higher than expected. The figures appear to show uncertainty ahead of the referendum had "limited", if any, impact on growth. Meanwhile GlaxoSmithKline is to invest £275m to expand its UK manufacturing sites, saying the country remains "an attractive location" despite Brexit. The news is particularly interesting given the firm had warned ahead of the referendum of the impact a Brexit vote would have. The FTSE 100 index was up slightly on the GDP news, to 6749.12 at 16:00 BST, so once again nudging its high point of the last year. The pound was at 1.19 euros (its 52 week high is 1.43 euros, its post Brexit low was 1.16 euros). The Financial Times leads on International Trade Secretary Liam Fox wanting the UK to quit the EU customs union so that he has maximum freedom to negotiate new trade deals around the world - the FT quotes him as saying he was "scoping out about a dozen free trade deals outside the EU to be ready for when we leave". The Daily Telegraph says that Brexit could lead to BT being broken up because regulator Ofcom would have more powers. We already know that there are going to be plenty of Brexit-related jobs created - for example trade negotiators - but one that caught our eye today was from NHS England for someone to be Head of its EU Transition Team "a new unit to manage the impact of the NHS of leaving the European Union". The main event: There are no answers yet on what will happen to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland when the UK leaves the EU, but diplomatic overtures continue with Theresa May hosting Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny at Downing Street. She said they were in agreement that Ireland and the UK "want to maintain the closest possible economic relationship". Mr Kenny said Brexit "was not the outcome we in Ireland wanted" but expressed hope the UK would remain "outward- looking". Also in the news: There were widespread calls for action in June after figures showed a rise in reported racist incidents following the referendum - and now Home Secretary Amber Rudd has announced a review of how the police handle hate crime. Another consequence of the Brexit vote was Nigel Farage's decision to step down as UKIP leader. The contest to succeed him showed signs of livening up, with Suzanne Evans ruling herself out with a pledge to back councillor Lisa Duffy - and MEP Steven Woolfe heading to Manchester for his first big speech. Financial news: No relevant financial data released. London's FTSE 100 index ended almost 14 points higher at 6,724.7 - well up on its immediate post-referendum level and approaching its highest of the past year. The FTSE 250 was up to 17,108, about 13% above its June low and back to average levels for the past year. Most papers carry the news that Ryanair plans to "pivot" investment away from the UK by cutting frequency of flights on some routes. From the papers Martin Weale from the Bank of England's interest rate-setting committee, the MPC, has spoken out in favour of a stimulus package - which, according to the Financial Times , "all but guarantees" the bank will announce one at its meeting on 4 August. Forget any "emergency Budget" - the new chancellor is unlikely to make a significant announcement until November, as it will be difficult to read the economic runes cast by the referendum before then, advises Paul Johnson of the Institute for Fiscal Studies in The Times. The Daily Telegraph and others report on the views of the president of the Royal Society, Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, who says he has seen no evidence UK researchers are being overlooked for EU funding in the wake of the referendum, and the UK's attractiveness to international academics is "not going to change". Reuters reports Liam Fox, the new international trade minister, got a lukewarm reception in Washington DC, where US counterpart Michael Froman warned of no "meaningful advance" US-UK trade negotiations until "basic issues around the future EU-UK relationship have been worked out". More reading: And finally... The Times' Red Box caught up with Brexit backer Conservative Tim Loughton today, and snapped (sorry) this excellent picture. The main event: Theresa May paid her first visit to Northern Ireland as prime minister, where she met First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness to discuss issues facing the country following the referendum result. She said their talks were "positive and constructive". The key issue was what happens to the border between Northern Ireland the Republic of Ireland after Brexit. Mrs May said: "No-one wants to return to borders of the past. " Also making the news: Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon spoke about the future of the UK and the EU, saying it was in the UK government's interest to help find a solution short of a second independence poll - "or we can consider again the option of independence". Financial news: London's main share index was lower on Monday morning, while other major European markets saw gains. Shares had been in positive territory until publication of the CBI's latest industrial trends survey, which suggested Brexit was hitting business confidence. The Financial Times reported that billions of euros have been pulled out of investment funds since the UK voted to leave the EU, although some analysts say this could just be an initial knee-jerk response. From the papers: What the commentators say: Roger Bootle of Capital Economics, writing in the Telegraph , is bullish about the UK's financial outlook, saying "alarmist views have proved unjustified" - with the equity market "stabilised" and the fall of sterling "of net benefit to the economy overall". Ian King in the Times asks whether Philip Hammond's courtship of Chinese investment could create the potential for clashes at Downing Street , saying Theresa May has been far more "sceptical" about inviting Chinese involvement in UK projects. The Guardian's Larry Elliott assesses some options for an "economic reboot", including quantitative easing or loosening credit controls - "something governments need to have up their sleeves when time gets tough". And finally... EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker on Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who once compared the EU to Nazis: "I haven't met him, but I would love to, so that I can persuade him that there is more separating myself and Hitler than just a nuance. 58 Reality Check: Is doping a problem in Paralympic sport? The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) gives details of anti-doping activities in its annual reports. The report for 2015 is due out in the next few weeks, so the most recent report we have is the 2014 one . In the year covered by that report, 1,013 tests were conducted for IPC sports (which include athletics, swimming, powerlifting and skiing) in which prohibited substances were found nine times. During the year, sanctions were taken against 11 athletes. If you break that down into the sports involved it is clear that most of the IPC's anti-doping problems come from the sport of powerlifting, which was the source of seven of the positive tests and eight of the sanctions. The IPC announced in 2014 that it had suspended 13 powerlifters in the previous 14 months. The sport has been targeted with a "Raise the Bar - Say No! to Doping" campaign. Since then, the IPC has also adopted a new anti-doping code , which came into effect on 1 January 2015. Paralympic athletes have the same list of banned substances as Olympic athletes and, like them, anyone who requires additional medication for pain or treatment must apply for an exemption. "It's a common misconception that a lot of Paralympians will be on prescription drugs. That's not the case at all," Nicole Sapstead, UK Anti- Doping chief executive, told the BBC ahead of London 2012. "Obviously there are athletes with spinal injuries and they need pain relief. But mostly it is the same as the Olympics - things like asthma and diabetes. " Only one athlete was given a doping sanction at the Sochi Paralympic Games in 2014, but since then the McLaren Report for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) found that Russia's sports ministry manipulated urine samples provided by its athletes between 2011 and 2015. The report identified 27 samples relating to eight Para-sports, five of which are summer sports, including some governed by the IPC. The IPC also found evidence that samples were swapped during the Sochi Winter Paralympics, adding that it planned to reanalyse every Russian sample given at the event. So now the Russian team has been banned from this year's Paralympic Games in Rio, and the IPC is wondering if it has more of a doping problem than it previously thought.

Tesco customer finds a worm in his cucumber and his complaint goes viral When Wes Metcalfe bought a cucumber from a Tesco shop in Dinnington, Sheffield, he did not expect it to come with a dead worm. So put off was he by the creature wedged inside the packaging, that he turned to Facebook to let Tesco know why it would be a while before he tucked into another cucumber sandwich again. Tesco's comical comeback and Mr Metcalfe's response to it have gone viral. It started on Saturday, when he posted : "Dear Tesco, yesterday I purchased one of your fine cucumbers to make my favourite dish - a cucumber sandwich. "Upon opening my cucumber, I discovered a worm inside the wrapping. "I thought - at last, finally Tesco have come up with something to beat Aldi's free-spider-with-bananas offer. "I excitedly shouted the kids downstairs to come and meet our new pet. "We decided to name him William. "Our new pet appeared to be very unresponsive, we just put it down to him being sleepy and decided to give him some time to come round. "Twenty-four hours later and William still hasn't moved - on closer inspection he seems quite flat (again, see picture) and I think he may be dead. "Well... I'm no vet, but I think the tight shrink wrap on the cucumber may have squashed and killed William. "I know Aldi's banana spiders were deadly, but at least they had some life in them. "I now have three very upset children, a worm funeral to plan and to top it all off I've totally lost my taste for cucumber sandwiches, which as everyone knows are a favourite at any wake. "So come on Tesco, wiggle your way out of this one. " Tesco's equally tongue-in-cheek response began: "I'll be heading to a muddy festival shortly, trawling through the fields of damp grass and dirt much like William would've during his happier times. "This means I wont be able to make it on the day unfortunately, though I've decided to compose a poem, which I hope you can read out on the day. "Would that be OK? "Here goes: 'An ode to William. "'Although life takes funny turns, we can all learn from William the worm. "'Let us gather, light a candle to burn, and celebrate the life of William the worm. "'Lights shine bright, let's eat sponge cake through the night! Because there's many a lesson to learn. "'He wriggles many miles; he gave us many smiles, so we stand confident and firm... "'William will be back, very much like Arnie, though now we will all check before we make a sarnie!' "#PoemsforWilliam. "Wishing you the best, Rob - customer care. " So moved was Mr Metcalfe by Tesco's tribute, he shared a picture of William the worm's grave, with the post : "Funeral update: well what can I say? It's been an emotional day, but the funeral went without a hitch. "Tesco Rob, we read out your poem, and there wasn't a dry eye amongst us. "Keeping on with the poem theme, here's another, which I think sums up today quite nicely. "#RIPWilliam #justiceforwilliam #poemsforwilliam. "'As we gather here today for William the worm, "'It's time to reflect on the lessons we can learn. "'Now, this poor worm's life was cut far too short, "'After he was crushed to death in a cucumber I bought. "'Tesco, please don't let this happen again. "'Don't let William's life be lost in vain. "'But let's not focus on who's to blame. "'Tesco have apologised admitting their shame. "'As we resume William's body into the mud, "'Please don't shed a tear. Instead, think of the good, "'For William's death has brought us all here, "'Sharing jokes and spreading cheer. "'Before his death, William was completely unknown, "'Spending his days in the mud on his own. "'But now his name has travelled wide and far, "'William the worm - the viral superstar!'" The conversation did not end there. Tesco replied with their interpretation of Wonderwall by Oasis , and Mr Metcalfe responded with a version of Blur's Parklife, which he renamed Worm life. The Facebook conversation has been shared more than 30,000 times and has had more than 10,000 comments since being posted on Saturday. Mr Metcalfe, a trainee electrician from Sheffield, told BBC News: "I enjoy making people laugh, but you just can't tell what will go viral. "I think it went crazy because Tesco's responses were so good. "If they hadn't replied in such a fun way, then it probably wouldn't have gone so big on the internet. "I've had a mostly positive response, but one lady didn't get the joke and told me off for making a fuss about the worm. " Mr Metcalfe said Tesco had offered him a £10 gift voucher to cover the cost of William the worm's funeral. "I think Tesco have more than made up for it," he said. "If people can laugh about it all, then that is great, "There is enough seriousness in the world. " Mr Metcalfe also confirmed he would start eating cucumber sandwiches again.

Russian kills man who saved his wife from drowning A Russian has been detained after drunkenly stabbing to death a man who had just helped save his wife from drowning, investigators said Monday. The crime took place on Saturday evening when the 51- year-old culprit and his wife were drinking on the shore of Siberia's Lake Baikal, the world's deepest freshwater lake around 4,400 kilometres (2,730 miles) east of Moscow. The couple went swimming and the woman got into difficulties, but a group of young men nearby heard her screams and helped her husband pull her out, investigators for the eastern Siberian Buryatia region said in a statement. But "despite the fact that the men had rushed over and practically saved the life of his wife," the man started drunkenly shouting at the rescuers and pushing one of them, investigators said. As the group of young men revived the woman and took her over to a campsite, the husband ran off and fetched a knife, investigators said, based on witness testimony. He then ran up and "threatened them with reprisals". As the rescuers tried to disarm him, he stabbed two of them, one in the hip and one in the neck. The 27-year-old man who was stabbed in the hip died in hospital after suffering massive blood loss, while the other survived. Investigators said the attacker's actions were "not only criminal but also quite immoral," which "could significantly increase the sentence". The detained man is claiming self-defence. He is charged with severe bodily harm leading to death and could serve up to 15 years in jail. Investigators said he had used drugs as well as alcohol. In the first half of this year, 35 percent of all crimes in Russia were committed by people who were drunk, according to the interior ministry.

Behind the hype of the 'Brazilian butt lift' and its founder On Saturday Ivo Pitanguy, the world-renowned Brazilian plastic surgeon and pioneer of the "Brazilian butt lift" died at the age of 90 - just a day after carrying the Olympic flame through Rio. His legacy has inspired plastic surgeons around the world. And techniques like the "butt lift" have become increasingly popular with patients. The American Society of Plastic Surgery dubbed 2015 another "year of the rear" as, it says, "procedures focusing on the derriere dominated surgical growth". So what is behind this phenomenon? And does it hurt? There are several types of procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons a buttock augmentation changes the size and shape of the patient's buttocks by transferring and injecting fat, or by surgically placing silicon implants into the buttock. The "Brazilian butt lift" specifically involves fat grafting or injection. The patient undergoes liposuction to remove fat from their abdomen, hips and thighs which is then processed and re-implanted into the buttocks. Conversely a regular buttock lift reduces the volume of the buttocks by removing excess skin and fat from the region. The procedure is commonly performed on people who have lost a significant amount of weight. According to Dr Marc Pacifico, British plastic surgeon and spokesperson for the British Association for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons , Dr Pitanguy's contribution to the field was immense. "I think just to mention that he was the creator of the butt lift trivialises his contribution to plastic surgery. "His contribution is so wide reaching. He singularly advanced techniques in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery like breast reconstructions and rhinoplasty. He helped us understand how we tailor face lifts, or how we do body contour surgery and tummy tucks. "It is very unusual in the modern world that he managed to a have a profound impact in so many areas because doctors usually specialise in one thing. " Dr Pitanguy is also renowned for making plastic surgery available to the poor to fix deformities or bodily abnormalities. On the website of his clinic he wrote : "An individual's suffering is not proportional to his deformity, but to the perturbation caused to his harmony by living with his image. " Nearly 320,000 buttock augmentation or buttock lift procedures were performed globally in 2015, according to the International Society of Aesthetic and Cosmetic Surgery , a 30% increase in the number of procedures since 2014. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons also reported a marked increase in the amount of "Brazilian butt lift" procedures performed over the past several years. Dr Pacifico says media coverage of the generous behinds of celebrities like Kim Kardashian or Nicki Minaj may partially explain the procedure's rise in popularity, as admirers seek to emulate such figures by artificial means. He also says people who live in hot climates where more of the body is exposed are more likely to get butt lifts. The backside holds a special place in Brazilian culture and since the 1970s some celebrities have traded on having the perfect derriere. Bottoms have featured in Brazilian music and poetry throughout the 20th Century. In 2011, the country started the "Miss Bumbum" competition which judges women's bottoms and annually crowns a "Miss Butt". Dr Pacifico says butt lifts using fat-grafting, where fat taken from other areas of the body is injected into the buttock, are generally safe. "The worst case is fat necrosis where the [re-injected] fat dies and can be become lumpy and infected. I don't perform butt lifts with implants because I think this procedure can cause more problems. There is a greater risk of the implants flipping or moving which can put pressure on nerves which run into the legs and thighs. " Although there are risks associated with all surgery, Dr Pacifico emphasised the importance of using a reputable and qualified surgeon. The most dangerous procedure associated with butt lifts is the injection of silicone (silicone shots) into the buttocks. This practice was outlawed in most countries as the procedure can cause severe infection or blockage, which may lead to death. The procedure involves injecting liquid or gel silicone into the buttocks without a protective membrane, allowing the substance to travel throughout the body. The US Food and Drug Administration says that silicone is not approved to augment tissue anywhere in the body. The Miami Herald has reported on several injuries and deaths after women were illegally injected with silicone or were treated by disreputable surgeons and clinics. "If you have injected fat into your buttocks, I advise my patients not to sit down for up to six weeks. The fat must 'survive' in its new home. When you sit you put pressure on your buttocks which reduces the blood flow to the area. "Without a constant blood supply, the new fat might not survive. " Patients must sleep on their stomachs or side while recovering. For those who can't sleep on their stomachs, inflatable mattresses and chairs with cleverly placed holes are available so patients can sit and lie on their backs without putting pressure on the their bottoms. Buttock augmentation procedures vary in price, depending on the country and the surgeon - but costs run into the thousands of pounds. An alternative to surgery is butt padding, like a push-up bra for your buttocks, or bum lifting jeans, popularised in Colombia as "levanta cola jeans". Both types of items can be purchased for less than £100 ($130). That sounds a lot less painful.

Error puts Chinese tourist in German migrant hostel A Chinese tourist spent nearly two weeks in a German migrant hostel after mistakenly applying for asylum when he actually wanted to report a theft. German media say the 31-year-old backpacker, who spoke neither German nor English, underwent a medical check and his fingerprints were taken. A Red Cross worker later found out that the man's wallet had been stolen in Stuttgart. But instead of going to the police the man registered as a migrant. A Mandarin speaker solved the puzzle. The translator was found at a Chinese restaurant near the migrant hostel where the tourist was staying, in Duelmen, near the west German city of Dortmund. In early July the tourist arrived at the hostel on a bus with migrants, from Dortmund. "He was so different from the others. Very, very helpless," said Red Cross worker Christoph Schluetermann. A translation app confirmed Mr Schluetermann's suspicions that the tourist had got entangled in the asylum system by mistake. "It came up with phrases like 'I want to go on a trip abroad'," he said. It emerged that the tourist had plans to visit Italy and France. The man, from northern China, had calmly allowed the authorities to take away his passport and visa, and take his fingerprints. He then had a medical check and was given the standard papers that migrants get on arrival in Germany. He had meals at the migrant hostel and received some spending money. Mr Schluetermann said hostel staff made futile calls to various consulates, hoping to identify the tourist. An error over the man's visa caused further delay. Finally his asylum application was stopped and he was able to continue his European tour. According to German broadcaster WDR, the man did not get angry but left Germany saying simply that he had imagined Europe to be quite different.

Ethiopia protests: 'Nearly 100 killed' in Oromia and Amhara Nearly 100 people were killed in the weekend's protests in Ethiopia as demonstrators clashed with security forces in different parts of the country, Amnesty International says. The rights group says the most deadly incident happened in Bahir Dar, where at least 30 people died on Sunday. The authorities have said seven died in Bahir Dar and that security forces were reacting to violence from protesters. There has been an unprecedented wave of protests in Ethiopia in recent months. People in the Oromo and Amhara regions have been complaining about political and economic marginalisation. Amnesty says that 67 people died when "security forces fired live bullets at peaceful protesters" in different towns and cities in the Oromo region over the weekend. There were clashes between security forces and protesters on Sunday in Bahir Dar, the Amhara regional capital. Opposition activists have given similar figures for the number of people killed. The government has blamed "nearby and distant foreign enemies and social media activists" for defying warnings about holding unauthorised protests, the government-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reports. The authorities have said that the demonstrators were destroying government and private property and "inflicting deaths on innocent citizens" and arrests were made as people were trying to spread the violence, FBC adds. The United States, a close ally of the government, said it was "deeply concerned" by the violence and said the people's rights to demonstrate should be respected. The unrest was sparked last November by a plan to expand the capital into Oromia. This led to fears farmers from the Oromo ethnic group, the largest in Ethiopia, would be displaced. The plan was later dropped but protests continued, highlighting issues such as marginalisation and human rights. New York-based Human Rights Watch says that more than 400 people have been killed in clashes with the security forces since protests began. The government has disputed this figure. The Amharas are Ethiopia's second biggest ethnic group and used to form the country's elite.

Taiwan protests at 'forced deportation' from Kenya to China Taiwan has protested against the "forced" deportation of five Taiwanese citizens who were acquitted of charges of organised crime from Kenya to China. Taiwanese officials said the five were flown to China despite a Kenyan court order for them to return to Taiwan. Chinese authorities said they were suspected of telecoms fraud which targeted people in mainland China, and should be tried in China. Taiwan does not have formal diplomatic relations with Kenya. Africa Live: BBC news updates On Friday the five, along with 35 Chinese nationals, were acquitted of allegedly running an unlicensed telecommunication system on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to prove their involvement, AFP news agency reports. This is the latest incident in which Chinese authorities have managed to get Taiwanese fraud suspects deported to Beijing. Taipei has also protested against deportations from Malaysia and Cambodia to China. In April, Kenyan authorities handed over 45 other Taiwanese people, suspected of conducting telephone scams, to Beijing. Taiwan labelled the incident "extrajudicial abduction", saying they had been forced on board a plane by Kenyan police wielding rifles and tear gas. At the time, Chinese authorities praised Kenya for supporting its "one- China policy". Beijing views Taiwan - self-ruling since 1950 - as a breakaway region that must be reunited with the mainland. It insists that other countries cannot recognise both China and Taiwan, with the result that Taiwan has formal diplomatic ties with only a few countries.

China police tell man he was executed 10 years ago Chinese officials have confused a man with a similarly named criminal who's been dead for 10 years, despite a government campaign to crack down on "repeat identities". The 45-year-old, identified in Chinese media as Mr Chen, applied for a certificate to show he had no criminal convictions for his new job in Guangzhou. But the police refused his application as they said records showed he was convicted and executed in 2006 for kidnapping. Reporters from the Guangdong Radio and Television Network later found that the conviction belonged to another man with the same name and identity card number. Despite such a record, Mr Chen says he's been living a normal life since his "execution" a decade ago and hasn't experienced any difficulties before. "I was even allowed to apply for a travel permit to Hong Kong and Macau from the government," he told the broadcaster, adding: "All these things are just puzzling. " Guangzhou police said there had been a mistake and issued him with the certificate. The mix-up over the two Chens is one of the more extreme cases of "repeat identity" in China, caused when an administrative error gives citizens an identity card number that's already been issued. The Ministry of Public Security has been eradicating such cases as part of a campaign which ended in June, and Xinhua News Agency says there are now fewer than 10 repeat identity card numbers, down from some 1.1 million in 2009. 80 CPL 2016: Brilliant Wasim and Gayle ensure Jamaica Tallawahs lift trophy a 2nd time A brilliant bowling performance from the Jamaica Tallawahs saw them dismiss the Amazon Warriors for 93 in the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final to secure their second title, the first team to do so. The Amazon Warriors lost their with alarming regularity as they fluffed their lines on the tournament’s biggest night. The Tallawahs finished behind the Amazon Warriors in the group stage and lost to them in the first play-off game, but in the final the Tallawahs did not give them a sniff in a fantastic all-round display that saw them win by nine wickets with 43 balls to spare. They did so thanks to a career best bowling performance from Imad Wasim and yet another Chris Gayle half century – his 78th score of fifty or more in T20 cricket. Jamaica Tallawahs team with the Caribbean Premier League trophy at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. Pic/CPL/Sportsfile Chasing 94 to win the Tallawahs did not need to rush, but that did not stop Chris Gayle getting off the mark with a towering six off Steven Jacobs. That was an impressive beginning from Gayle, but he and his team were selective in their shot making at first. Even going at just over a run a ball inside the batting PowerPlay kept them well ahead of the rate. As the innings progressed Gayle was happier to go for the big shots as he hit back-to-back sixes off Jacobs in the final over of the PowerPlay which brought 17 runs. During the sixth over Gayle became the fourth batsman to pass 400 runs in this edition of the Hero CPL. That acceleration from Gayle continued after the fielding restrictions were relaxed as he took 18 runs off an over as the Tallawahs got two thirds of the way to their target with just seven overs gone. Gayle brought up his fifty after 22 balls as he made a mockery of the target his team had been set. That patient start was quickly forgotten once he was well set as he struck 3 fours and 6 sixes on his way to 54 (27). This was the perfect performance from Gayle and his team as they became worthy Hero CPL champions, although Gayle was not there when the winning runs were struck having fallen to the bowling of as he went for another six. Instead it was Kumar Sangakkara who hit the winning runs as the Tallawahs ran on to the pitch to celebrate a superb win. It was a disastrous start from the Amazon Warriors with the bat and things didn’t really improve throughout their innings. First Nic Maddinson was out edging behind to for a golden duck. Then Guyana’s leading run scorer cut ’s first ball into the hands of at point. Those two early wickets and some excellent Tallawahs bowling saw the Amazon Warriors creep to 34-2 off their PowerPlay overs. There was huge pressure on Dwayne Smith with the two Australian overseas players gone, and he knocked the ball around for five overs before the need to accelerate brought a big shot. Unfortunately for the Amazon Warriors that injection of attacking intent from Smith also brought about his dismissal when he was caught in the deep for 17 (22) to give his first in professional cricket. When Jason Mohammad was given out to an lbw that looked to be sneaking down the Amazon Warriors were 53-4. That became 70-5 when followed up a big Hero Maximum by smashing a ball from Imad Wasim into the hands of Chris Gayle at short midwicket and it didn’t end there as the wickets kept tumbling. The only man who stood firm was Pakistani all-rounder who made 42 from 37 balls having been promoted to four in the order. But for him things could have been far worse for the Amazon Warriors, but when he went his side were 91-8. That soon became 91-9 the very next ball when Kesrick Williams bowled Steven Jacobs. The final wicket fell in the very next over when Adam Zampa was run out – the Amazon Warriors were 93 all out after 16.1 overs, their lowest ever total. It was never enough to secure victory as they lost in the final of the Hero CPL for the third time.

Majhi just could not raise her level of marksmanship and lost the contest 1- 7, losing three sets and drawing another. Bindra the only individual Olympic gold medalist in 2008 at Beijing in the same men's 10m air rifle event, lost a tension-filled shoot-off against Ukrainian marksman S Kulish after the two were tied third at 163.8 in the race to reach the medal round. The Indian did not show any emotion after the heart-breaking moment as he walked off after losing the one-shot elimination against Kulish who went on to win the silver medal with 204.6 behind gold medalist Niccolo Campriani (206.1) of Italy. In fact, the Indian ace, in his fifth and last appearance in Olympics, was at one stage standing second in the eight-man final in which one shooter gets eliminated gradually leading to the final two men standing in the face-off for the gold after the 20th shot. The Zirakpur-based shooter had finished seventh in the qualifying round to make the cut for the finals while his compatriot and London Olympics bronze medallist Gagan Narang was way off the mark and missed out of the finals after finishing at a lowly 23rd position. Bindra scored 625.7 to book a berth in the finals. This is the only event Bindra is competing in the ongoing Games. Bindra, who crashed to a 16th place finish in London four years ago, scored 104.3, 104.4, 105.9, 103.8, 102.1 and 105.2 in the qualifying round. For another seasoned campaigner Narang, after picking up 73.7 points from his first seven shots, he fired a 10.8 to jump to the pole position with 105.3 points. But he lost the plot in subsequent rounds. After scoring 105.3 in his first round, Narang's performance went downhill as he shot 104.5, 102.1, 103.4, 101.6, 104.8 in the next five to finish with 621.7 points in the field of 50 shooters. In men's hockey, India's perennial habit of conceding late goals continued to haunt them as reigning double Olympic champions Germany scored seconds from the final hooter to steal a 2-1 win in a thrilling Pool B match. It was heart-break for the Indian fans as despite playing near perfect hockey for the major part of the match the Germans stole the win with just three seconds from full time. India's Rupinder Pal Singh celebrates scoring a goal during the men's field hockey Germany vs India match of the Rio 2016 Olympics Games at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Rio de Janeiro on August, 8 2016. Pic/AFP After weathering India's attacking onslaught for the majority of the game, the Germans exerted tremendous pressure on the Indian defence in the final two minutes. The Indian defence, which had a good match and stood firm all throughout, fumbled in the final seconds as Christopher Ruhr scored the winner for Germany with a deflection from close range to dash the PR Sreejesh-led side's hopes. Earlier, Germany took the lead against the run of play through a field goal from Niklas Wellen (18th minute) before Rupinder Pal Singh (23rd) drew parity for India by converting his third penalty corner of the Games. The win helped Germany keep their successful run intact against India since 1996. India last defeated Germany in Olympics way back in the Atlanta Games when they secured a 3-0 victory. But despite the loss, the Indians can take heart from the fact that they dished out a much better display against Germany today than what they managed in the recent past, which includes a 3-3 draw against a depleted German side in the Champions Trophy in London and 0-4 thrashing in Valencia just prior to the Olympics.

Finishing career in Jerusalem ‘means the world’ to Stoudemire The old Hapoel Jerusalem Malha Arena was filled with magnetic energy on Monday morning, as former six-time NBA all-star, Amar’e Stoudemire’s basketball “peace camp” was taking place. The arena was packed with a diverse group of Israeli children from all ethnicities and religions. Amare’s wife, Alexis, told The Jerusalem Post it was important for them to have a diverse group of kids participating in the camp. Religious and non-religious Jews, as well as Israeli-Arabs, were in sight. Stoudemire was on the court coaching hands-on, and the children’s excitement was contagious. Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. Israeli NBA player Omri Casspi and his Sacramento King’s teammate, Rudy Gay, along with NBA player Chris Copeland, also took part in the clinic. The peace camp uses basketball as a bridge between people, in an effort to promote peace among the different ethnic and religious groups in Israel. “My brand has always been about peace and education and I am now extending my brand internationally,” said Stoudemire to the Post. Stoudemire and his wife will return to the US shortly to pack their bags before they move to Jerusalem with their four children in late August, after announcing last week that he will be playing for Hapoel Jerusalem for the next two seasons. Stoudemire has been a part owner of the team since 2013, and is now strengthening his relationship with Israel, and Jerusalem specifically. About the upcoming move, Stoudemire said: “It means the world to me to end my career in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is probably my favorite city in the world, because of its history. So it’s a pleasure of mine to play here.” The former NBA star has been to Israel several times as part of his spiritual journey to connect with his Jewish roots and bring the message of peace. “It is a great honor and privilege for me to be able to give back to the fans,” he said while being bombarded with countless requests for photos and autographs, to which he calmly and patiently responded. Stoudemire has previously said that he is a Hebrew on his mother’s side and feels very connected to the Holy Land. “Basketball is a passion of mine. It is a love I have had since I was a little boy and now to continue to play basketball in Jerusalem is an opportunity that can only happen once in someone’s lifetime,” Stoudemire said in a press conference. 83 Oops! When IOA Goodwill Ambassador Salman Khan forgot Dipa Karmakar's name A huge controversy had erupted over the appointment of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan being appointed as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian team to Rio Olympics 2016. The 50-year-old superstar being chosen as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Goodwill Ambassador saw several people expressing their displeasure on Khan's appointment. Salman gave fresh fodder to his detractors on Sunday after he goof-up again. Salman Khan at the trailer launch of 'Freaky Ali' At the trailer launch of his brother Sohail Khan's film 'Freaky Ali', Salman committed a faux pas twice when he forgot the name of India's star gymnast Dipa Karmakar. The star called her Deepika and then Dipti, but not her actual name -- Dipa. Even more tragic is the fact that Salman made the blunder on a day when Dipa made history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the individual vault finals in her debut Olympics after finishing eighth in the qualifying round. She will compete in the finals on August 14. Salman first addressed the Olympian as Deepika. What followed was hilarious and tragic at the same time. A journalist in his effort to correct the Khan said that the gymnast's name was Dipti. Salman nodded and said, "Yes, Dipti". 85 SA Olympic rowers cruise into lightweight double scull semi finals South Africa’s two lightweight double scull crews — Grobler and McCann and James Thompson and John Smith — and the women’s pair of Kate Christowitz and Lee- Ann Persse advanced to the semifinals. But the men’s four were unable to finish in the top three, being diverted into the repechage by the French crew they beat at the Olympic qualifying regatta in May. That means four SA boats, including the men’s pair from Saturday, are in the semifinals of this wind-swept rowing competition. “I thought we handled the conditions well, but we always knew what we were coming here for,” said Smith. “We’re going to get the cross wind. Rowers don’t always enjoy the cross wind, but we knew what we were getting into and we’ve been practising a lot in it.” A strong wind forced the cancellation of Sunday’s rowing, but Thompson believed that it was unusual. “The wind we’ve seen today is the predominant wind, from the right-hand side through the middle. “I think what we had yesterday and the day before was more of an anomaly, I think we’ll see this wind more during the week.” Smith and Thompson, the only survivors of the lightweight four boat that won gold at London 2012, had a rudder installed in their boat to help them cope with the Rio wind. Being used to sweep oar — using a single — they aren’t as proficient at sculling — using two blades — where the boat is usually steered by pulling harder on one side. “I think we’re the only crew with a rudder in our boat,” said Smith. “It’s not generally had but we thought we’re going to get great benefit from it and it pays dividends — we don’t have to pull harder on one side. “We just have to pull the same on both sides. But it’s still not easy out there.” Added Thompson: “I haven’t had to think about the steering once … but coming from a sweep oar background where rudders are used, we’re a little more accustomed to using it [the rudder].” McCann and Grobler, without a rudder because they are more experienced scullers, said they were unfazed by the cross wind. “One of our pre-Olympic camps was in pretty rough water,” said McCann. “We’re just going to roll with it,” added Grobler. “We’ve had incredible training in all conditions. Just bring it on, whatever it is.” The duo were in control throughout their heat, and they weren’t pushed to the limits, but even so, it was still a grind, said Grobler. “I’ve always said rowing looks like Beethoven’s fifth symphony, but inside our heads it’s like Metallica.” And it was going to get tougher, added McCann. “We went out the start pretty hard and then we can assess through the race and obviously we’re not having to wind it for the line when we are in the lead like we were. “But we know that it’s very seldom that we have race like that and we’re preparing for a pretty ruthless semi on Wednesday.”

Airstrikes destroy MSF hospital in Syria and leave 13 people dead A hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders and specializing in pediatrics in a rebel-held northern Syria province has been destroyed in a series of airstrikes over the weekend that killed 13 people, including four staff and five children, the international medical charity said on Monday. The group, known by its French acronym MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières), said that two of four airstrikes directly hit the hospital in Millis, in the northern province of Idlib, and put it out of service. Six other hospital staff members were wounded in the airstrikes in broad daylight on Saturday. The bombing of the hospital that serves as a reference center specializing in pediatrics also destroyed the operating theatre, intensive care unit, pediatric department, ambulances and a generator, the charity said. It was not clear which government had conducted the airstrikes and the MSF statement did not specify. MSF said the hospital attack deprives 70,000 people in Millis and surrounding areas of essential medical care. The hospital, supported by MSF since 2014, used to receive 250 patients a day, many of them women and children “The direct bombing of another hospital in Syria is an outrage,” says Silvia Dallatomasina, medical manager of MSF operations in north-western Syria. She called for an immediate end to attacks on hospitals, pointing that four out of five UN security council members are participants in the war in Syria. Hospitals, mostly in rebel-held areas, are regularly attacked. In July alone, the UN said it had recorded 44 attacks on health facilities in Syria. Syria’s government and Russia, a major ally that has been carrying out airstrikes in Syria since last September, deny targeting health facilities. In recent days, a number of attacks were reported on medical facilities amid increased violence, and ultimately increased pressure on the health facilities, in northern Syria. MSF said two facilities it supports in Idlib, controlled by insurgents, have reported nine mass influxes of wounded in July that left 466 wounded and 37 dead. In the first six months of 2016, the same facilities reported only seven mass influxes of wounded, with a total 294 wounded and 33 dead.

Census privacy fears: Nick Xenophon to withhold name in push for 'test case' The independent senator Nick Xenophon says he will refuse to include his name on his census form , knowing he could be prosecuted for it, because he is not convinced the national census does not present a huge privacy risk. As millions of Australians prepare to enter their household details on Tuesday, Xenophon said he was willing to make himself a test case to challenge the government’s ability to prosecute Australians for withholding their name from the census. Speaking to the chief statistician of the Bureau of Statistics had not changed his mind. “I understand that, by refusing to provide my name, I will be given a notice under the act to comply and the $180-a-day fine starts from then,” Xenophon said on Monday. “I will contest any such notice and, by doing so, I will in effect turn it into a test case for the ability of this request. “In the meantime, I will be seeking amendments to section 14 of the act so that a person cannot be prosecuted if they fail to provide their name. In other words, it will ensure such information is unambiguously non-compulsory. “I will write to both the prime minister and opposition leader by tomorrow, as well as my crossbench colleagues, seeking their support for this amendment, which of course will need to be made retrospective to census night.” However, Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm said he would put his name on the form. The self-declared libertarian told ABC radio he was “broadly sympathetic” to the idea of withholding names but added that “it is the law to provide your name and I wouldn’t endorse breaking the law,. The minister for small business, Michael McCormack, and the ABS chief statistician, David Kalisch, held a joint press conference in response to Xenophon’s announcement on Monday. Kalisch said he had spoken to Xenophon and had explained to him how the ABS would protect and use the census data it collects. McCormack said he hoped the briefing had encouraged Xenophon to change his mind, and he urged Australians not to follow Xenophon’s lead. “I think we’re making far too much of this, names and addresses and privacy breaches,” McCormack said. “Anybody with a supermarket loyalty card, anybody who does tap-and-go, anybody who buys things online, they provide more information indeed probably to what is available to ABS staff. “I note with some humour really that many people are going on Twitter and Facebook and making various comments about the ABS, about the census, and about me as well, when in fact wherever they go it tracks you on your Facebook account, so I can’t really see what the big deal is.” Concerns about the 2016 census have been gathering steam after Anna Johnston, a former deputy privacy commissioner of NSW, warned in March that the ABS’s plan to collect and keep the name and address of every person in Australia, and to link census answers to other sets of data, like health and educational records, would allow the agency to “ build up, over time, a rich and deep picture of every Australian’s life, in an identifiable form ”. “This proposal represents the most significant and intrusive collection of identifiable data about you, me and every other Australian that has ever been attempted,” Johnston said. She wrote in Fairfax Media on Monday that she would be boycotting the census this year, because the ABS had failed to listen to her concerns. Bill McLennan, a former head of the ABS, has also warned that the ABS’s plan to collect and keep the name and address of every person in Australia would destroy people’s trust in the ABS, because it was trying to do so furtively. “This is a direct and deliberate breach of the Australia’s privacy principles, which, to say the least, is a surprising action for the ABS to be taking,” McLennan has written . He also says the ABS does not have the authority to collect peoples’ names in the 2016 census on a compulsory basis, despite what it has been telling the public.

Defense Ministry backs down from Iran deal comparison to Nazi era Munich agreement The Defense Ministry issued a clarification on Monday to a statement released on Friday that slammed the the Iran nuclear deal and made reference to the failed 1938 Munich pact with Nazi Germany. In its clarification statement, the Ministry blamed “the media” of attributing a “mistaken significance” to last week’s statement, saying, “We wish to clarify that the State of Israel and Israeli defense establishment will continue to work in close and full cooperation with the US, out of a deep appreciation and mutual respect.” Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. Israel, it added, remains “deeply concerned that even after the nuclear deal with Iran, the Iranian leadership continues to declare that its central goal is the destruction of the State of Israel, and continues to threaten the existence in words and deeds.” The Ministry listed recent Iranian actions, like fast-tracking its ballistic missile program, which produces projectiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons, holding official military parades with missiles that have the words “erase Israel” written on them, and holding Holocaust denial cartoon competitions. It also accused Tehran of “continuously promoting terrorism against Jewish and Israeli targets around the world, directly and through Iran’s proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah.” “As a result, even if Iran keeps to the nuclear agreement, its open and official policy of striving to destroy Israel robs it [Iran] of its legitimacy in the international community,” the statement said. Nevertheless, the Defense Ministry said, since the agreement was signed, a “long list of political and economic leaders from around the world are conducting business in Tehran, when a significant portion of the billions of dollars earned by Iran is invested in military force-building and promoting an illegal ballistic missile program.” Differences of opinion between Israel and the US does not “in any way” harm “our deep appreciation to the US and to the US President for their enormous contribution to Israel’s national security, and to the great importance with which we view the strong alliance between the two states,” the Ministry said. It denied that Friday’s statement was aimed at comparing the Iran agreement to the Munich pact. “We apologize if it was interpreted differently,” the Ministry said. On Friday, the Defense Ministry released a highly unusual and strongly worded statement following remarks by President Obama, who said Israel recognized that Iran was upholding the Iran nuclear deal . “The Israeli defense establishment believes that agreements have value only if they are based on an existing reality, and that they have no value if the facts on the ground are completely the opposite of [the concepts] on which an agreement is based on,” the ministry said. “The Munich agreement did not prevent the Second World War and the Holocaust, precisely because their basic assumption, that Nazi Germany could be a partner to any kind of agreement, was wrong, and because the leaders of the world at that time ignored the explicit statements by Hitler and the rest of the leaders of Nazi Germany,” the ministry added. 89 Teen asylum seeker convicted of killing Swedish refugee centre worker Stockholm – A Swedish court on Monday sentenced a teenaged Ethiopian asylum seeker to psychiatric care for fatally stabbing a young woman working at a youth refugee housing centre in January. The teen, identified in court documents as Youssaf Khaliif Nuur, had been charged with murder but the district court in the southwestern town of Gothenburg found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. "Youssaf Nuur, through his heedless behaviour, caused Alexandra Mezher's death. He is therefore guilty of involuntary manslaughter," the court wrote. A court-ordered examination found Nuur was mentally unstable, and this may have meant that he did not know that the stabs to Mezher's thigh would cause her to bleed to death, the court said. Mezher, a 22-year-old of Lebanese origin, was stabbed as she tried to break up a fight in the centre for unaccompanied minors. Nuur also attacked another person who tried to help Mezher, resulting in the conviction for aggravated assault. Nuur neither denied nor admitted the events, telling the court he had no memory of what had happened. After undergoing psychiatric care, Nuur was ordered deported from Sweden and banned from returning before 2026. Nuur's exact age has not been determined. He told the court he was 15, but the prosecution argued that he was at least 18. After examining bone x-rays and dental records, the court sided with the prosecution. Migrant crisis A lawyer for Mezher's family, Hans Gaestadius, told news agency TT they were "disappointed" by the verdict as they had hoped for a murder conviction, and they planned to appeal. The January 25 killing sparked outrage in Sweden amid a flare in violence linked to the migrant crisis, especially at overcrowded reception centres. According to the Swedish Migration Agency, the number of threats and violent incidents at asylum facilities more than doubled from 2014 to 2015 as Sweden witnessed a record number of migrant arrivals. A country of 9.8 million, Sweden took in more than 160 000 asylum seekers in 2015, putting it among the EU states with the highest proportion of refugees per capita. It has since tightened its asylum rules, which has curbed the migrant flow drastically. After the killing, questions were raised about safety at the reception centre, where Mezher had been working alone at the time of her death. But a study by the Health and Social Care Inspectorate – a government agency responsible for supervising healthcare and social services – found no shortcomings in routines. However, the company that runs the centre no longer allows employees to work alone.

British quadruple amputee claims Matterhorn first A British mountaineer who climbed Switzerland's Matterhorn has claimed to be the first quadruple amputee to reach the famous peak. The claim of Jamie Andrew has not yet been verified with certainty, but he was backed by the warden of the Hoernli Hut base camp, who said he knew of nobody else who had achieved the feat. Mr Andrew lost his hands and feet to frostbite after becoming trapped in a snowstorm while mountaineering in France 17 years ago. The Scotsman spent five years training before attempting to reach the 14,692ft Alpine summit last Thursday with two seasoned guides from the International School of Mountaineering. "In the end, climbing the mountain was the easy bit. It was all the graft and preparation, and trial and error (that was hardest)," he said. After losing his limbs, Mr Andrew had to learn to walk again and eventually took up skiing and long-distance running before returning to his first passion - mountaineering. With the help of robust prostheses and specially adapted poles, he was able to ascend much of the way towards the peak. When he needed to climb, Mr Andrew said he used what remains of his arms to hold on to the rope. The 47-year-old took almost 13 hours to reach the summit and return to base camp - about five hours longer than most climbers. Kurt Lauber, a Swiss mountain guide and warden of the Hoernli Hut, confirmed the ascent: "I don't know of any other such case. " He applauded the , but cautioned against underestimating the Matterhorn, noting that Mr Andrew's team narrowly missed a bout of bad weather in which two other Britons climbing on the Italian side of the mountain were killed. "It would be wrong for people who aren't disabled to now get the impression it's easy," he said. AP

Alleged navy depot thieves denied bail Cape Town - Three men accused of stealing military equipment from the SA Navy arms depot in Simon's Town were denied bail on Monday. The Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court postponed the matter to Thursday, Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said. Both the accused’s and investigating officer’s affidavits were read into the record on Monday. Two of the men, who were arrested in Steenberg on July 28, faced charges of housebreaking, theft, and the unlawful possession of explosives, prohibited firearms, and ammunition. Several guns, grenades, and ammunition were stolen in July. After their arrest, they allegedly led Military Police and the Hawks to where they had stored it. Everything was recovered. The third accused, who was arrested at the navy barracks on July 30, is facing a charge of being in possession of a prohibited firearm.

Trumpism: A political tendency to bully, bluster, exaggerate and demonize, in an often bigoted way For months now, enlightened Americans have been walking around shellshocked, wondering: “where did this Trump phenomenon come from? How could a man who speaks like that become so popular?” Progressives have been particularly contemptuous, calling Trump a “racist,” a “boob,” a “maniac” whose supporters are equally reprehensible. Yet, as Trump likes to say, “believe me,” he didn’t come from nowhere. Look at the Israel debate, especially on campus. See how anti-Zionists bully and bluster, see how they exaggerate and demonize, how even academics who consider themselves above all this lose all reason and reasonableness, speaking in a particularly simplistic, polarizing and bigoted way when it comes to Israel. Last week produced yet another example of the idiocy that passes for informed debate on campus, demonstrating Progressive Trumpism in action. Two blame-Israel- firsters, flaunting their credentials as academics, pretending that bashing Israel as academics takes bravery rather than knavery, published two disconnected statements in Haaretz under the headline “We’re American Jewish Historians. This is Why We’ve Left Zionism Behind.” Beyond other misfires, little in either rant based the repudiation on any major insight gleaned as American Jewish historians. Editors, not writers, usually write the headlines. So the first question goes to Haaretz’s editors: beyond being Trumpificacious, meaning randomly trying to apply expertise in one realm to another unrelated one to generate attention, what did these writers’ status as American Jewish historians have to do with their newly-expressed hatred for Zionism? Going deeper, if one can use that word when attacking such superficial analyses, historian Hasia Diner, amid her cliché-ridden, derivative, poorly reasoned, assertion- filled, I-was-“naïve”-but-now-I-see-Israel’s-true-ugliness confessional wrote: “The death of vast numbers of Jewish communities as a result of Zionist activity has impoverished the Jewish people, robbing us of these many cultures that have fallen into the maw of Israeli homogenization.” Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. What Jewish communities died as a result of “Zionist activity”? Israel saved Holocaust survivors from European Jew-hatred, absorbed 850,000 Jewish refugees driven out by and Muslim violence and helped liberate Soviet Jewry – along with millions of others – by pressuring that evil regime. And how many Jewish communities, including the ones Diner studies, have withered “as a result of” assimilation, not Zionism, having fallen into the “maw” of American “homogenization?” Diner’s claim that “The ideal of a religiously neutral state worked amazingly well for the millions of Jews who came to America” is half-true. Millions of Jews have thrived, but many of “the millions of Jews who came to America” committed “Jewicide,” Jewish suicide, disappearing, abandoning their Jewish selves in ways Israel’s Jewish immigrants haven’t. Moreover, any honest Jewish historian knows that the aliya from America and other free Jewish communities has been negligible – while Israel has enlivened Diaspora Jewish culture and identity in many different ways. This statement about Israel, not anti-Semites, killing Jewish communities and culture would be spectacularly stupid under normal circumstances, but in today’s inflamed campus atmosphere it’s also criminally negligent. Given her prominence, Diner’s statement will encourage anti-Zionist bullies who have repeatedly used their Israel-hatred to promote Jew-hatred. A professor dodging responsibility for the way anti-Zionism stokes anti- Semitism on campus today is as convincing as Trump supporters ducking responsibility for the intolerance Trump stokes. Last week, the usually level-headed journalist Jeffrey Goldberg jumped into the fray. Responding to the headline “This is Why We’ve Left Zionism Behind,” he tweeted: “I think I’m getting ready to leave Ha’aretz behind, actually.” I thought, “touché.” I also agreed with Goldberg’s response, when so many Haaretz writers demonstrated that they love criticizing but can’t take criticism: “Amazing how a newspaper published in the rough, tough Middle East can become hysterical over a tweet.” But he lost me when he tweeted: “in English, I find the @ TimesofIsrael to be very reliable. Ha’aretz has some good reporters. JPost is nuts.” I will follow Goldberg’s advice and not take his 140-character assault on the character of this proud newspaper too seriously. But Goldberg’s unnecessary stab at The Jerusalem Post, while being barraged by Haaretz’s thinskinned radicals, struck me as a case of Sandersitis. During the Democratic primary fight, when a questioner started ranting about how “the Zionist Jews...run the Federal Reserve” Bernie Sanders cut him off – but then hastily, randomly, defensively – affirmed “the needs of the Palestinian people.” Similarly, it seemed that Goldberg was trying to his left-wing credentials while bashing Haaretz by randomly, defensively, unnecessarily bashing the Post, which leftists caricature as right wing. I will not succumb to Sandersitis by ending with the obvious, that the Right’s obstructionism and yahooism spawned Trump and is enabling him. The point here is that the doctrinaire Left, including fanatic anti-Zionists, have co-parented the Trumpian monster. And one takeaway from this age of Trump should be that we must call out the bigots and the haters, challenge the academics who foment sloppy thought and rigid intolerance, wherever they are. And so we should criticize Progressive Trumpism freely, without exhibiting any Sandersitis. The author is professor of history at McGill University and the author of The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, published by St. Martin’s Press. His next book will update Arthur Hertzberg’s The Zionist Idea. Follow on Twitter @GilTroy Think other should know about that? Please share | |

Michael Phelps' purple blotches spotlight 'cupping' trend Phelps, who won the 19th Olympic gold medal of his career on Sunday and helped the US men's team to victory in the 4x100 meters freestyle relay, is one of a number of Olympic athletes practicing "cupping," an ancient Chinese healing practice. During the therapy cups are placed on the section of the body in need of repair to create suction. The method is said to draw out any toxins, mobilize blood flow, soothe sore muscles and even help cure insomnia. "I have done it for awhile but I haven't had bad ones (marks) like this awhile though," Phelps, who in 2015 posted an Instagram photo of himself receiving the therapy, told reporters on Monday. "That's where I hurt the most," he said of the marks on his shoulder. "I have done it before pretty much every meet I go to. I just asked for a little cupping yesterday because I was sore. " The 31-year-old, raising a roar from the crowd on his first competitive appearance at his fifth Games after sitting out the heats, now has an unprecedented 23 medals with two silvers and two bronzes filling out his tally. On Monday, there were nearly 300 posts per minute mentioning Phelps on Twitter, according to social media analytics firm Zoomph. US gymnast Alex Naddour, 25, and Belarusian swimmer Pavel Sankovich are also fans of the procedure. Naddour posted a selfie with a big cupping mark on his shoulder last week, while Sankovich, 26, posted a photo on Instagram in June saying, "This kinda Saturday morning. Cupping is a great recovery tool. " Actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and pop star Justin Bieber have also been photographed with the distinctive large circles on their backs and chest. However, while the therapy dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures, it has been less popular among more skeptical Western medical societies. "Because of the nature of this treatment, a substantial placebo effect is possible. It is also likely that consensus is biased because studies reporting some benefit are more likely to be published than those that did not," the American Cancer Society said in a statement on Monday. 95 Zuma will not step down for coalitions - MK vets Johannesburg – The ANC’s military veterans on Monday rejected the EFF’s demand that President Jacob Zuma first had to step down before Julius Malema’s party entered into coalition talks. “This thing that is trending, that there are parties saying in order to be in a coalition with you the president of the ANC must step down, that one will never arise,” Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe said. His was reacting to the EFF’s demand that it would only form a coalition with the ANC in some of the country’s metros if Zuma was axed. ANC Youth League treasurer Reggie Nkabinde earlier echoed these sentiments, saying “Zuma is not going anywhere”. Maphatsoe said Zuma had nothing to do with the outcome of Wednesday’s local government elections. “President Zuma never contested the elections. He was not even a candidate of these elections. It's the ANC that contested.” He did not say how the MKMVA hoped coalition talks would go, but said it would respect whatever decision the ANC made. The EFF was in a position to help either the DA or ANC gain clear majorities in several metros. In Gauteng, Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, and Nelson Mandela Bay, in the Eastern Cape, all had hung councils.

French girl, 16, charged with allegedly supporting Islamic State A judge has handed a 16- year-old French girl preliminary terrorism charges for allegedly supporting the Islamic State group and trying to perpetrate an attack, prosecutors have said. The girl was using a social media app to spread calls by Isis to commit violent acts, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Monday. The judge charged the teenager with taking part in a “criminal terrorist association” and “inciting to commit terrorist acts through an online communication medium”. She has been placed in custody. The investigators said the girl was “extremely radicalised” and was the administrator of a chat group dedicated to Isis propaganda on the Telegram app, which has been used by suspected jihadis to communicate, deputy prosecutor Laure Vermeersch said. Vermeersch said no specific targets had been mentioned by the teenager, who had no prior criminal history. Her name wasn’t released. Investigators are now trying to trace other participants of the chat group and know whether the girl had possible accomplices in her alleged attack plot or in spreading Isis propaganda. The girl was arrested on Thursday in the Melun region, a southern Paris suburb, during a police operation. It is not the first time a girl has been detained in France under suspicion of trying to commit an attack. In March, two girls aged 15 and 17 were charged with taking part in a criminal terrorist association for allegedly plotting to attack a target – possibly a Paris concert hall – in a copycat action of November’s Bataclan attack in the capital. But investigators acknowledged the plot was not in an advanced stage. France has lived under a state of emergency for nearly nine months, since the deadly attacks in November in Paris that killed 130 people. Parliament has extended the measure for six more months after a truck attack in the southern city of Nice on Bastille Day (14 July) that killed 85 people and was claimed by Isis.

JPost Editorial: Palestinian elections Finally, after many delays, Palestinians are preparing for elections. No, the rift between the Hamas- controlled Gaza Strip and the Fatah-controlled West Bank has not been healed. No, the Palestinian Authority has not ceased to be a corrupt, dysfunctional governing body, nor has Hamas given up on its plan to reestablish a Medieval-style caliphate where the State of Israel presently exists. And these are only municipal elections, not national elections, which were last held in 2006. Nevertheless, some cautious optimism is in order. Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. In the run-up to elections, Palestinians will be focusing on the democratic process of educating themselves about the issues and choosing candidates that are thought to best represent popular public opinion on issues related to local government. Palestinians will be focusing on self- government and the policies that will best help improve their lives on the municipal level. The elections will also provide a rare opportunity to test the electoral strength of both Fatah and Hamas. Unlike the 2012 municipal elections, which were boycotted by Hamas, this time Hamas will participate. A number of pollsters have published public opinion surveys of the Palestinians living on the West Bank and Gaza that have shown Hamas and Fatah enjoying practically equal support. For instance, a poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in early June found that 31 percent would vote for Hamas, 34% would vote for Fatah, 9% would vote for all three other parties combined and 26% said they were undecided. But a real election, albeit on the municipal level, would give a better indication of trends within Palestinian society. As stated by Jihad Harb, a researcher and analyst of Palestinian society at the PSR, in an interview with Adam Rasgon, The Jerusalem Post ’s Palestinian affairs correspondent, “These elections will be the window that the Israeli government, society look through to take the pulse of Palestinian society.” Election results will give Israel’s politicians an opportunity to assess the efficacy of decades of cooperation with the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority. Still, one mustn’t pin too much hope on Palestinian municipal elections. While holding a popular vote is undoubtedly a necessary element in any democracy, it is hardly sufficient to transform the PA or Hamas-controlled Gaza into a democracy. Beyond holding regular elections on both the local and national levels, Palestinians need to put in place other essential components of every democracy. Presently, Palestinians lack a free press. Official PA news media publish propaganda praising Fatah. Journalists who are critical of the PA and attempt to reveal its corruption are regularly intimidated. In May, for instance, PA security officers raided the home of Tareq Abu Zeid of the Al- Aqsa TV channel, which is affiliated with Hamas, and held him in detention for 37 days. Family members say Abu Zeid was tortured. Other journalists who have been arrested include Amer Abu Arafeh, Yusef Al-Shayeb, Tareq Khamis, Amir Abu Aram, Muhanad Salahat, Muhammad Awad, Adeeb Al- Atrash, Musa Al-Shaer and George Kanawati. The PA justice system uncritically supports Fatah’s autocratic rule. In the same Abu Zeid case, a PA-affiliated court in Nablus turned down seven petitions for his release. The situation in Gaza is even worse. Therefore, it is unlikely that elections held in either Gaza or the West Bank will be particularly free or fair. The 2006 Palestinian elections taught the world that democratic elections can be exploited by Islamists who are utterly opposed to the democratic process. A similar process unfolded in Egypt, which brought to power the Muslim Brotherhood for a short time. In Turkey, democratic elections have led to the rise to power of an increasingly Islamist government that has stifled basic liberties, such as freedom of the press. The holding of elections is a positive first step toward the building of democratic rule for Palestinians. But elections alone are not enough. Freedom of expression and a judicial system that enforces human rights are no less important. Until the Palestinian political leadership ceases to be a choice between corrupt functionaries and religious extremists, true democracy will be elusive, no matter how many elections are held. 99 99 St. Lucia Test: India look to bag series against West Indies St. Lucia : After a remarkable fightback by the West Indies on the fifth and final day of the rain-hit second Test, India will aim to re-group and win the third and penultimate cricket Test match starting here on Tuesday. After a comprehensive victory in the first Test by an innings and 92 runs, India looked favourites to win the second one as well, but an outstanding batting display on the final day by (137 off 269 balls) helped the home side manage a draw and stay alive in the four- match series. But despite the draw in the second Test, the visitors look a better side on paper to grab the series in the third match at the Darren Sammy Stadium here. India have previously played a Test in this ground in 2006 and the game ended in a draw. With the batting line-up faring well and posting big totals on both the matches, India's head coach Anil Kumble will have to sort few things in the bowling department and come up with answers why they could not pick six wickets on the final day of second Test. Lokesh Rahul, skipper Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane have been in fine touch and striking big runs, there is not much to worry in batting. With pace trio Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav contributing in both the matches, except the final day of the second Test, it is most likely that the combination will not be changed. However a change can be expected in the spin department with left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja getting a chance in place of leg-spinner Amit Mishra. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has already cemented his spot with a match-winning show in the first Test. The hosts will aim to make a mark with the bat after failing to do so in the first two Tests. Senior batsmen Marlon Samuels and Darren Bravo will have to take the responsibility and score big o entyertain any hopes of staying alive in the series. Besides the experienced duo, the young batsmen in the side will have to step up and prove a point. They have included 22-year-old Shai Hope, the opening batsman from Barbados, in their squad for the third Test. Hope replaced opener Rajendra Chandrika, who scored 16, 31, 5 and 1 in the first two Tests. In the bowling department, the major headache for the hosts will be their weakened pace bowling department after Jerome Taylor retired from Tests and not considered for selection. In their absence, skipper Jason Holder will have to take the responsibility to lead the attack again along with , Shannon Gabriel and Miguel Cummins while leg-spinner is the lone specialist spinner in the team. The squads: India: Virat Kohli (captain), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, , Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper), R Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Stuart Binny, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma. West Indies: Jason Holder (capttain), Kraigg Brathwaite (vice-captain), Devendra Bishoo, , Carlos Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope, , Alzarri Joseph, Marlon Samuels.

Showers installed for tourists near Auschwitz criticised for being 'insensitive' Sprinklers have been installed near the Auschwitz- Birkenau State Museum, leading to criticisms of insensitivity because of their perceived similarity to the Nazi gas chambers. “I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel comfortable going into a shower at the entrance to an extermination camp," Rabbi Rafi Ostroff wrote on Facebook, alongside pictures of the mist sprinklers. "They apparently had good intentions in the face of the extreme heat, but [what about] a little sensitivity", he said, according to a translation by Haaretz. "Am I exaggerating? Or am I again imagining the lack of sensitivity to the Jewish story by the heads of the museum.” The museum distanced itself from the sprinklers, posting on Twitter to say they had not been installed by the museum and were not located on its premises. The sprinklers were installed in a nearby car park run by the local municipality, the museum added. Visitors to the museum complained about similar sprinklers last year, which were installed at the entrance to the memorial. The memorial said the mist sprinklers had been installed to cool visitors to the museum and rejected the comparison between the sprinklers and the gas chambers. "It is really hard for us to comment on some suggested historical references since the mist sprinkles do not look like showers and the fake showers installed by Germans inside some of the gas chambers were not used to deliver gas into them," the museum wrote on their Facebook page in August 2015. "Zyklon B was dropped inside the gas chambers in a completely different way - through holes in the ceiling or airtight drops in walls. " More than six million people, mostly Jews, were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust – their "Final Solution to the Jewish Question". Other victims included gypsies, homosexuals, the disabled and those considered to be political opponents.
