Investigating the Network Characteristics of Two Popular Web-Based Video Streaming Sites
European Scientific Journal November 2017 edition Vol.13, No.33 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 Investigating the Network Characteristics of Two Popular Web-Based Video Streaming Sites Dr. Feras Mohammed Almatarneh University of Tabuk Department of Computer Science, College Duba Saudi Arabia Doi: 10.19044/esj.2017.v13n33p305 URL:http://dx.doi.org/10.19044/esj.2017.v13n33p305 Abstract The determinants of the strategies to be employed by video streaming sites are application (mobile devices or web browsers) and container of the video application. They affect video streaming network characteristics, which is often the traffic flow, and its quality. It is against this background that studies on streaming strategies suggested the need to investigate and identify the relationship between buffer time, video stream protocol, packet speed and size, upload time, and waiting period, specifically to aid network administrative support in case of network traffic bottlenecks. In view of this, this study investigates the network characteristics of YouTube and Vimeo, using experimental methodology, and involving WireShark as network analyzer. Google Chrome and Firefox are the web browsers employed, while packet size, protocols, packet interval, TCP window size and accumulation ratio are the metrics. Short ON-OFF, Long ON-OFF, and No ON-OFF cycles are the three streaming strategies identified. It is further shown that both Vimeo and YouTube employ these strategies but the choice depends on the container of the video streamed. Keywords: Network characteristics, streaming strategies, video streaming sites, traffic flow Introduction Video streaming is one of the techniques for video distribution over the internet. It helps in lecture and news broadcast, and allows users’ access, without any geographical constraints (Karki, Seenivasan, Claypool, & Kinicki, 2010; Tan & Zakhor, 1999). -

YOUTUBE Phong Dinh' In the high-bandwidth Internet age, video sharing websites such as YouTube and Yahoo! Video are growing in popularity. The ease with which such sharing is accomplished has aided users in illegally uploading copyrighted movies, TV shows, and music. In a recent lawsuit, Viacom and its copyright-owning affiliates sought one billion dollars in damages against YouTube, one of the Web's most popular video-sharing websites, for copyright infringement. In response, YouTube invoked the affirmative defense of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's safe harbor provisions, codified at § 512. The Act states that a service provider is not liable for hosting copyrighted information on its own system for a prolonged period of time as long the service provider has met the threshold requirementsfor these provisions and the specific requirements for at least one of the four safe harbors. -

The Making of Hollywood Production: Televising and Visualizing Global Filmmaking in 1960S Promotional Featurettes
The Making of Hollywood Production: Televising and Visualizing Global Filmmaking in 1960s Promotional Featurettes by DANIEL STEINHART Abstract: Before making-of documentaries became a regular part of home-video special features, 1960s promotional featurettes brought the public a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood’s production process. Based on historical evidence, this article explores the changes in Hollywood promotions when studios broadcasted these featurettes on television to market theatrical films and contracted out promotional campaigns to boutique advertising agencies. The making-of form matured in the 1960s as featurettes helped solidify some enduring conventions about the portrayal of filmmaking. Ultimately, featurettes serve as important paratexts for understanding how Hollywood’s global production work was promoted during a time of industry transition. aking-of documentaries have long made Hollywood’s flm production pro- cess visible to the public. Before becoming a staple of DVD and Blu-ray spe- M cial features, early forms of making-ofs gave audiences a view of the inner workings of Hollywood flmmaking and movie companies. Shortly after its formation, 20th Century-Fox produced in 1936 a flmed studio tour that exhibited the company’s diferent departments on the studio lot, a key feature of Hollywood’s detailed division of labor. Even as studio-tour short subjects became less common because of the restructuring of studio operations after the 1948 antitrust Paramount Case, long-form trailers still conveyed behind-the-scenes information. In a trailer for The Ten Commandments (1956), director Cecil B. DeMille speaks from a library set and discusses the importance of foreign location shooting, recounting how he shot the flm in the actual Egyptian locales where Moses once walked (see Figure 1). -

Especially in 2019, it is viewed as a highly polarized sector of society sometimes hostile to those on the right side of the aisle. But just because the majority of those who work in Hollywood are liberal, that doesn’t necessarily mean our entertainment follows suit. I argue in my thesis that entertainment in Hollywood is far less partisan than people think it is and moreover, that our entertainment represents plenty of conservative themes and ideas. In doing so, I look at a combination of markets and artistic demands that restrain the politics of those in the entertainment industry and even create space for more conservative productions. Although normally art and markets are thought to be in tension with one another, in this case, they conspire to make our entertainment less one-sided politically. -

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY LARIAT was among the first, if it was not the very first, of the world’s terrestrial, wireless high speed Internet service providers (WISPs), which now number between 4,000 and 8,000 in the United States alone. With more than 17 years of experience in the deployment of wireless broadband and an Electrical Engineer (MSEE Stanford 1985) at the helm, LARIAT provides high quality broadband Internet to a large and growing service area in southeastern Wyoming, less than 5% of which has access to “wired” broadband options (e.g. DSL or cable modem service). It also competes gamely with much larger providers – including cable and telephone incumbents Bresnan Communications and Qwest – in the few more densely populated areas where these companies have deployed high speed Internet service. As a pioneer in the deployment of Internet service to unserved and underserved areas, LARIAT is 1 In re a National Broadband Plan for Our Future, Notice of Inquiry, GN Docket No. 09-51, FCC 09-31 (Apr. 8, 2009) (“Notice”). uniquely -
