7 Mitigation Measures ______143 SFG1795 V8 Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized EG-GIZA North Power Project–Natural The Egyptian Natural Gas Company Gas Lines to Additional Power Plants in Egypt Suez Power Station Natural Gas Line ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL Public Disclosure Authorized Prepared By: IMPACT ASSESSMENT October 2016 Final Report ESIA study for EG-GIZA North Power Project – Suez Power Station Natural Gas Line Executive Summary Introduction The proposed project is considered as part of Egypt’s strategy which aims to expand the use of natural gas as a clean source of energy, a goal that will be achieved through delivering natural gas to houses, industrial facilities and power plants. In this regard, the EG-Giza North Power Project was undertaken by the Egyptian Government. The project consists of three main components: Component 1: The Power Plant Component, which is the construction of 2250 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plant; Component 2: The Construction of transmission lines to connect the power plant to the national grid Component 3: The construction of gas pipeline to strengthen the gas supply network to ensure supply gas to power plant. Component 3 of the project, which involves gas pipeline construction to provide natural gas to North Giza power station, is implemented by the Egyptian Company for Natural Gas (GASCO) with the assistance of the World Bank. This component and was 96% concluded by the end of 2015. After conclusion of the procurement of the Bank financed packages, there were still financial savings from the project that can be utilized by the Government of Egypt. In this regard, the World Bank received formal request from the government of Egypt to utilize these savings to procure pipelines required for upgrading the natural gas network and connecting to new and existing power plants. As the objective of the new gas pipelines connections to the existing and new power stations is to improve the security and efficiency of electricity supply, the additional proposed scope by the Egyptian government is considered to be fully in-line with the original project objectives. The proposed pipelines will also be implemented by GASCO and are composed of 9 pipelines, namely: 1. New Capital - Dahshour gas pipeline (70 km) 2. Dahshour – El Wasta gas pipeline (65 km) 3. El Wasta – Beni Suef gas pipeline (65 km) + gas decompression station (in Beni Suef Power Station) 4. Sixth of October Power Station (400 meters) + gas decompression station (in 6th of October power station) 5. El Gamel – Damietta gas pipeline (50 km) Page 2 of 234 ESIA study for EG-GIZA North Power Project – Suez Power Station Natural Gas Line 6. El Suez Power Station (3 km) + gas decomposition station (in Suez Thermal Power Station) 7. Soumid import gas pipeline (4 km) 8. El Mahmoudiya Power Station (27 km + 17 km + 7 km) + gas decompression station (in Mahmoudiya Power Station) 9. Damanhour Power Station (2.5 km) + gas decompression station (in Damanhour Power Station) Approach to Study The preparation of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment is done according to the following approach: Review of the available information and documents regarding the project; Reviewing national and international legislations and regulations relevant to the project, including the required governmental permits; Conducting site visits to the project site, to collect the baseline data regarding the current environmental and social situation; Holding a Scoping Session (first public consultation) to engage the community and different stakeholders in the process of identifying the expected impacts; Assessing the potential environmental and social impacts associated with proposed project activities; Developing an outline for the environmental and social management plan for the mitigation of the expected negative impacts and the monitoring activities to ensure compliance with the relevant environmental laws; Holding a Public Consultation Session based on the updated ESIA and RAP studies; Finalizing and submitting the ESIA and RAP studies. Project Description Pipeline Route The pipeline which is the focus of the study is El Suez Thermal Power Station pipeline in addition to the pressure reduction station inside the power station. The pipeline aims at supplying Natural Gas to Suez Thermal Power Station. The planned pipeline is located at the western zone of El Suez governorate. The pipeline route will start at the valves room at Raas Bakr 16” pipeline and it extends 500 meters to the east to cross with a railway. After that, it extends 1.2 Km to the south parallel to a storm water drain to cross Salah Nessim road, and then it extends 700 meters to the east again along the gulf and the residential colony of El Suez Petroleum Company. The pipeline continues this path till it reaches the pressure reduction station inside Suez thermal power station with a total length of 3 Km. Page 3 of 234 ESIA study for EG-GIZA North Power Project – Suez Power Station Natural Gas Line In total, there are two main crossings; one with the railway and the other with Salah Nessim road. Along the whole route, the pipeline will be located underground. Construction Phase The project will be carried out by a contractor under GASCO’s supervision and control. It is expected that the engineering, procurement and construction phase will collectively take about 24 months. The following activities will be conducted in the construction phase: • Right of Way activities. • Pipe transportation and storage. • Trenching. • Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) or boring for the road crossings • Welding and inspection. • Coating and inspection • Wrapping of joints. • Ditching. • Installation of valves. • Tie-ins • Laying fiber-optic cables • Backfilling. • Pigging. • Hydrostatic test. • Dewatering. • Purging & commissioning. • Manufacturing and fittings for valves rooms (including civil, mechanical, and electric components). Operation Phase The operation phase is normally functioned through the central control unit through the SCADA system. Normal maintenance and monitoring work will be performed including patrolling to leakages and potential hazards detection. In case of leak detection, or damage in parts of the pipeline, the damaged part will be isolated and the necessary action will be taken according to the emergency response plan of GASCO. Page 4 of 234 ESIA study for EG-GIZA North Power Project – Suez Power Station Natural Gas Line Project Alternatives The main target of the proposed project is to increase the natural gas supply to Suez Thermal Power Plant, in order to help meet the growing national demand. In case of having “No Action”, Mazout (heavy fuel oil) or Diesel can be used to compensate this shortage despite that there will be more polluting air emissions in case of transporting it through vehicles, and even during its burning. In addition, since there is a local shortage in supplying Mazout and Diesel, it will be mainly imported, and accordingly increase the load on the national budget especially regarding the current foreign currency problems. Hence, the “No Action” alternative is not accepted. Several alternatives were considered for the route of the line, with the aim of avoiding as much as possible, any residential areas with sensitive receptors, and major crossings of both roads and waterways. Accordingly, the prioritization of certain pipeline route from the environmental and social perspectives focus on shortening the pipeline length and minimizing the associated expected social and environmental impacts. The choice of the pipeline route put into consideration some technical aspects set by GASCO including facilitating the accessibility of equipment, vehicles and personnel to the pipeline site during the construction and maintenance activities by placing the path as much as possible near to paved roads. The pipeline has a specified start point and end point, and due to the small length of this particular pipeline, there are no much routing alternatives available. The path was chosen for the purpose of facilitating the implementation of pipelines’ welding during the construction activities as the welding process needs additional clearness space of 500 m. In addition, the chosen path does not intersect with any existing residential buildings. Thus, the chosen pipeline route achieves the environmental and social targets, and at the same time aligns with GASCO’s strategy which aims at choosing routes already containing existing infrastructure and minimizing intersection with residential areas. The vegetation along the roads was disturbed and the erosion started immediately after the disturbance caused by the road construction. Our assumption is that biotechnical measurements should prevent the problems caused by erosion and improve stabilization of road edges. The knowledge of plant species which are able to grow in unfavourable conditions along the roads is important for correct selection of plants used for outplanting. The vegetation succession was observed using phytosociological relevés as a tool of recording and mapping assambblages of plants species along the roads as new linear structures in the landscape. Data from phytosociological relevés were analysed and the succession was characterised in different altitudes. The results can help us to select group of plants (especially shrubs and trees), which are suitable to be used as stabilizing green mantle in various site conditions and for different purposes (anti-erosional, ornamental, protection against noise or dust, etc.).

HE present study aims to study the floristic characteristics of the native trees and shrubs T(with height ≥50cm) in the Egyptian flora. The floristic characteristics include taxonomic diversity, life and sex forms, flowering activity, dispersal types,economic potential, threats and national and global floristic distributions. Nine field visits were conducted to many locations all over Egypt for collecting trees and shrubs. From each location, plant and seed specimens were collected from different habitats. In present study 228 taxa belonged to 126 genera and 45 families were recorded, including 2 endemics (Rosa arabica and Origanum syriacum subsp. sinaicum) and 5 near-endemics. They inhabit 14 habitats (8 natural and 6 anthropogenic). Phanerophytes (120 plants) are the most represented life form, followed by chamaephytes (100 plants). Bisexuals are the most represented. Sarcochores (74 taxa) are the most represented dispersal type, followed by ballochores (40 taxa). April (151 taxa) and March (149 taxa) have the maximum flowering plants. Small geographic range - narrow habitat - non abundant plants are the most represented rarity form (180 plants). Deserts are the most rich regions with trees and shrubs (127 taxa), while Sudano-Zambezian (107 taxa) and Saharo-Arabian (98 taxa) was the most. Medicinal plants (154 taxa) are the most represented good, while salinity tolerance (105 taxa) was the most represented service and over-collecting and over-cutting was the most represented threat.

The aim of this investigation is dealing with determination of pollen micro- and macro-morphological characters of Egyptian taxa of subclass Archichlamydeae to provide palynological information and an identification key adapted for use with archeobotanical materials. The pollen of 41 Egyptian taxa belongs to 18 families representing the current vegetation of Faiyum area described and illustrated with both LM and SEM micrographs. On the basis of pollen units, number and type of apertures, exine patterns were great diagnostic significance among the examined taxa. Seven major pollen types and 18 subtypes included in two groups (complex and single pollen groups) were recognized. Pollen types: Polyads, triporate, tetra- hexaporate and pantobrevicolpate are characterized to Mimosoideae, Urticaceae, Fumariaceae and Portulacaceae respectively; while pantoporate, tricolpate and tricolporate pollen types show highly diversity in pollen characters, comprising 16 pollen subtypes distributed among 14 families. Rashed, Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company ABSTRACT Since the onshore discovery of oil in the Eastern Desert in 1886, the petroleum industry in Egypt has accumulated reserves of more than 15.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent. An understanding of the tectono-stratigraphic history of each major basin, combined with drilling history and field-size distributions, justifies the realization of the complete replacement of these reserves in the coming decades. Most of the increase in reserves will be the result of offshore exploration. In addition to the 25 trillion cubic feet already discovered, the offshore Mediterranean may hold 64 to 84 trillion cubic feet and the onshore Western Desert may contribute 15 to 30 trillion cubic feet in new gas resources. Many of the new fields are expected to be in the giant-field class that contains greater than 100 million barrels of oil equivalent. Challenges include sub-salt imaging, market constraints for predominantly gas resources and economic constraints imposed by the high cost of development of the current deep- water gas discoveries that are probably unique worldwide. The offshore Gulf of Suez may yield an additional 1.5 to 3.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent, but it continues to be technologically constrained by poor-quality seismic data. Advances in multiple suppression and development of new ‘off-structure’ play concepts with higher quality seismic data should result in continual new pool discoveries.

Yet existing research on income inequality in developing economies has scarcely looked at the regional dimension. This is important, as progress in reducing income inequality at national level can only be partially successful if a country presents large regional variations, where very unequal regions coexist alongside relatively equal ones. Using newly assembled Luxemburg Income Study (LIS) data and a range of inequality measures, the analysis offers three findings. First, the distribution of income within Egyptian regions has become more unequal during 1999–2015. Second, there has been convergence: differences in income inequality within Egyptian regions tended to reduce, but less unequal regions are converging to similar levels of inequality with more unequal regions.

    Eldib Pandi| Update on Suez Canal Blockage re MV EVER GIVEN We have had several queries rolling in since the grounding incident related to the impalement of M/V “EVER GIVEN” at the banks of the Suez Canal. Therefore, we have put together some brief advice on the latest update and all relevant information: Currently, all attempts made to refloat the vessel have not been successful, as the bulbous bow of the vessel has been impaled in the Canal’s bank and the vessel is grounded on the southern entrance of the canal (KM153) blocking the channel, and thus, the northern and southern convoys have been suspended accordingly. For the time being, dredgers have been mobilized to dredge around the vessel to give her buoyancy. Unfortunately, nobody will be able to give any information on when the vessel will be refloated and the canal’s activity to return to normal. All we can say is that at least 10 tugs assisting the vessel. As for liabilities and even though Egypt is contracting party of LLMC Convention 76, we wish to advise that the only applicable rules will be the Suez Canal Rules of Navigations where article No.4 provided for that: “Art. 4 – Responsibilities: 1. When on Canal or at its Ports or Roads, any vessel or floating units of any description is responsible for any damage and consequential loss it may cause either directly or indirectly to herself or to Canal Authority (CA) properties or personnel or to third party. 2. The vessels or floating units’ owners and/or operators are responsible without option to release themselves from responsibility by limited liability.

Kamel: [email protected]). Abstract Background: Breastfeeding and proper weaning contribute to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In Egypt, by age 4–5 months, only 13% of infants are exclusively breastfed. A survey conducted in Egyptian hospitals concluded that many of the 10 steps to support successful breastfeeding were not executed correctly and other steps were not executed at all. Aims: To explore the patterns of feeding and weaning among infants in Egypt, and identify their determinants, to improve practice and promote children’s nutritional status. Methods: A cross‐sectional analytical study of 333 mother–infant pairs attending two primary healthcare (PHC) centres for vaccination sessions between April 2017 and June 2018. Mothers were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Results: Almost all infants were born in hospitals. Exclusive breastfeeding was not widely practiced. Prelacteal feeding was a common malpractice. The majority of mothers initiated artificial feeding during the first month of life. Rural mothers tended to introduce different foods earlier than urban mothers did. Minimum dietary diversity was achieved by 50.9% of urban infants aged ≥ 6 months (≥ 4 food groups), compared with 25.9% of rural infants. Minimum recommended meal frequency for age was fulfilled for 51.9% of urban and 29.6% of rural infants. More than 85% of mothers expressed their need for additional knowledge, and more than half identified the PHC centre as the appropriate source for information.

It has a cultural significant in Ancient Egypt. Fruits were discovered in Pharaonic tombs before the palm was discovered in a living state in the Nubian Desert of Sudan in 1837. It was presumed globally extinct until one female and a small number of juveniles were discovered in Dungul Oasis in 1963.
